Im black and i get told all the time that because i speak proper english that i'm speaking "like a white person" and that i have to speak poorly and curse alot to speak "African American English"
Good God, if these apes cannot speak English properly, what are we meant to do about it? Just because a black person fails at school, it doesn't mean the teacher or the school is racist, it means the kid is stupid; same with whites, same with Hispanics and same with Asians- no never mind, those fuckers know everything. XD
These kids had a hard time because they spoke improper English? I had the same thing happen to me! I failed math class because I used improper math, saying that 2+2=6!
This is the biggest joke I have ever heard. Blacks are forever making excuses for their deficiencies in basic intelligence and mental accuity. They try to be different. They wear their hats sideways, their pants hanging off their ass, they don't tie their tennis shoes as well as speaking improper English. Their main concern, first and foremost is to "be cool". That is all that is most important to them and why they will never rise to the level of whites.
@51rhm are you kidding me?! You are the least educated person I've ever seen on youtube so far man, linguistically speaking.
Man get your facts right before telling that black people are less intelligent or less capable than whites. Really. Man that's so close to racism I can't just not react to your comment.
@Clairevoyante You have no idea of my educational level. I do have the facts straight and stating the truth does not make one a racist. Every study done shows that blacks overall, have a lesser cognitive level than whites and orientals. The fact that the truth does not comport with what you wish was true is your problem, not mine. Do some reading & research, you will see what the truth is.
@rhm51 So name me studies, I really want to look at them. Because what you are saying is very shocking and not moral. Tell me how it's possible to have a corrolation between the skin colour and the linguistic and intellectual capacities. And also, tell me how linguistic capacities are realated to intelligence. Tell me. Because I know there is no corrolation between the 2. And Gosh tell me where you studied, because I plan never to go there.
@Clairevoyante You cant be that dimwitted. It is not their skin that makes them less intelligent, it is merely a characteristic of the their race, just like skin color, kinky hair, flat noses, higher rates of heart disease, Sickle cell anemia etc. I woulde love to know how my stating a fact is not "moral". Liberals are masters at trying to denigrate those with whom they disagree. When the facts arent on their side they personally impugn their opponents. You need to grow up.
@Clairevoyante Lastly, as for not wanting to go to school where I did, I dont think you need to worry, I seriously doubt you could pass the entrance exam.
@rhm51 You can still hide behind your ''facts'' but I still haven't heard from those studies you mentioned and the school you are in. And what is your major, neuroscience? I'm a linguistics major in the best Canadian university, so I could probably pass your entrance exam.
@Clairevoyante The studies while not at hand, were part of the masters program at The University of Virginia in anthropology from which I was graduated.
@rhm51 So an anthropology master's degree gives you the authority to say that Black people have less cognitive abilities? I don't think so. Try to go beyond the clichés that pollute your mind and learn about linguistic differences, and how they are unrelated to intelligence.
I think that you might have learned that Black Americans were socially disadventaged throughout History, and this may have led to lower level of education, but it's not related to their intelligence or linguistic capacity.
@Clairevoyante It is obviouos that your mind is made up and you do not want it confused with the truth. Continue to delude yourself into thinking what you want butit will never make it so.
@hannityforpres Sorry if I wrote a few mistakes, I'm not a native speaker of English (I'm a native speaker of French, and actually I translated the word from French too quickly, I should've checked :P ). But really, guys, read stuff from Labov, I'm sure it'll help you understand Ebonics better.
@hannityforpres Useless? Learning a language that is spoken in your country is useless? Anyway that's not what I meant, I mean learning to understand the ''phenomenon'' of ebonics, understanding the language itself as a distinct language.
@hannityforpres as long as people will still carry prejudice on this group of speakers, Ebonics will remain unaccepted, indeed! And that's very unfortunate.
@Clairevoyante Why is it unfortunate? Ebonics should die. And I'm sick of hearing about predjudice. Its not racism keeping blacks down, it's their lower IQ's and lack of interest in school. Those things keep them down, but they blame racism.
@hannityforpres Language diversity is important to maintain (anywhere). And YES this is called racism: pick up a white boy and a black boy in any elementary school, and you'll find a way to say that the white one will have more success in his life. And based on what? Lower IQ and lack of interest? Maybe if you told all the black people out there that they had the same chances of succeeding in life maybe they'd have a greater interest in school. It's not a biological thing. It's purely social.
and the social aspect of being a racist means thinking it is biological. Dunno. the US is split bvetween those with an authoritarian mindset, and those without. the ones that have this mindset are easy to manipulate and control, and also they get their voice heard more often than not.
@hannityforpres Out of the 53 dialects in this country and you say ebonics should die is why it's racist. You have picked 1 dialect out of the other 53 that you claim to be invalid only shows a predisposition towards racism and oppression. Lack of interest in schools is due to brainwashing. For example, it's like teach indian children that Columbus discovered America. It's simply wrong. All languages have dialects and since I speak 3 other languages I should know, that no dialect is wrong.
@Ryooken Yes, but some dialects are viewed as unacceptable in a business situation. I have a job where I hire people, and I know that in a sales situation, a person speaking ebonics will fail. As for teaching about Columbus, everyone knows that Indians and Vikings and probably a few other people were here before Columbus. The difference, of course, is that Columbus reported the new lands to the civilized world, and produced maps that others could follow.
@hannityforpres That's racist BS. We have elected presidents that speak all of the 53 dialects. Mostly southern white dialects and you are telling me that they are acceptable? Please it's utter nonsense. It's just racist propaganda that some dialects are acceptable and some are not. Oh BS Europe was not a civilized world. If they were actually civilized then they wouldn't have invaded north and south America. Let's be clear there is nothing wrong with African American English period.
@Ryooken Excuse me, but I didnt say that I had a problem with ebonics. Whether I do or not doesnt matter. What DOES matter is that a salesperson wont be successful speaking that way. Maybe its because too many customers are racist. And Europe whatever you think of it, WAS civilized. Civilization is DEFINED by shared knowledge. The various countries had books, maps, published and shared knowledge. The natives elsewhwere did not.
@hannityforpres Actually you did but be that as it may. If we can have presidents that speak using other dialects, people in sales are the problem racism is. To say that someone because of their dialect is black won't be successful when we have people in sales in America with Aussie dialects, Cockney dialects, Boston dialects, south dialects, he we even have a white guy on TV giving cooking instructions using the Creole dialect. It's racism plain and simple.
@hannityforpres Then those persons should not be in business period. If I go to Kentucky and listen to white people speak southern dialect, I don't suddenly refuse to shop there.
@hannityforpres It's that kind of bigotry that should not be catered to. It's the same basic bs that kept black people from shopping in stores but I will tell you what. Since you feel that way I will suggest to ALL black people that they not shop in any store that discriminates against people for the way they speak. You also realize that it's illegal to do this in the USA right? I hope so.
@hannityforpres Oh please they will do fine especially in black neighborhoods. Again that is not the point. You can argue that all day long but it's still discrimination period. This is just another way of saying that black language is illegitimate which is false.
@Ryooken If you say that learning standard midwest dialogue English is the most easy to understand and therefore everyone should use it. Yeah I agree but for you to say that every other Eurocentric is acceptable and African American isn't that's discrimination and illegal. It's that simple.
@hannityforpres Whether they are or not isn't the issue. The issue is that your opinion is false. I said that would be valued and particularly in the black community. I did not say that they would be valued only in the black community.
@Clairevoyante There are hundreds of studies on IQ test results around the world. There are 2 best selling books, you could look at, The Bell Curve, and Wealth of Nations by Richard Lynn. You asked. There is a place for you to start learning.
@51rhm I can see you are a racist. Actually its my skin that is black not my brain. You need to get your facts right before you comment. I forgive you for insulting my race.
@Ikechie Stating the truth does not make one a racist. I did not insult your race but merely stated what is. There is no animus in my feeling towards blacks or anyone else but to ignore facts in defference to political correctness accomplishes nothing.
@whitemanwaydownsouth Oh I totally agree and have been in that situation in the work force and I was amazed at that derogatory comments in general about Whites with no regard at all for the most part that I was sitting right there. And these were adults. With kids.. well I wouldn't want to think about it.
I'd say that American schools should ensure that students can understand and use Standard American English. If they use a different dialect and that makes SAE difficult for them, they might need some extra help in English classes but it is no sign that they are less intelligent or less teachable.
Really no different in principle than how a native German or native French or native whatever speaker would be handled. The specific help provided would differ, but the same principle holds.
Rich people are the ones who choose what type of English is to be taught in schools and that is Standard American English. I for one do not agree with their choice. Since when has English been a pure language? It continues to evolve and those elitists who cannot adapt to other dialects of the language are ignorant which makes them the morons.
Once again, you're attributing to me something I never said. I don't think you're mentally ill. How could I possibly know that? I merely said the tone of your posts to me is angry. One need only read them to discern that. The idea that a 26 year old boy feels with all sincerity that he can call a linguistic anthropologist on her "bullshit" with regards to a subject matter that is her forte is really the height of youthful hubris. Good luck with that.
most white people cant really understand ebonics but they are two type that can those that are receptive as in can understand but can speak and the others are those that can speak who are culturally no different from other ebonic speaker. white thats play at ebonics but can never really perfect and often speak english with ebonic slang which is not the same as a person who uses its grammar like my grandma but not the slang again my grandma.
the funny thing about ebonics is it is an american based language as its was born here in america. the other funny thing is that it is gaining speakers and spreading beyond the inner cities. two things seem to makes its identity hard to define & thats white exposure to it and it goes both way as in constant white english exposure is the only reason hasnt recreolized and ebonics influence on white english is making appear closer to english than it really is. white english is ebonicizing.
I don't speak French well enough to make the comparison, but the black Jamaicans speak a "deeze, dems, and doze" kind of English, despite the charming accent, and I would expect that the French speaking black islanders speak a similar patois of French.
French is quite linguistically diverse with many dialects in various regions across the world. Even in vietnam. Louisiana, Quebec, Haiti, etc etc Even in the francephone african countries. Its still French, but not exactly th sameas spoken in France, but still understandable. Like how English has many dialects. You think AAVE is tough my god you have never been to Singapore before to hear Singlish. a mixture of english, mandarin, tanim, and malay lah :P
its similar to southern american english actually. ITs never always been confined in the inner cities. Even middle class and upper middle class african americans speak it in one way or another. It may sound more proper, but they're just more willing to code switch. Since we are a minority we learn to adapt. We learn to be bicultural and bilingual. This isn't unique if you're talking about linguistics in many countries.
@lordblazer. as a native speaker f ebonics i know it wont confined to just inner city areas but that is where its having the biggest influence on non-natives. its actually was born in rural southern areas and the similarities to SAE are both superficial and real. but yeah the problem with it is the fact that its being absorb into english hence why SAE and Ebonics are similar and the fact that although it will never be a standard language even though it has its own rules that do and
speaking ebonics is just an excuse for ignorance, ebonics is an insulting word for blacks that actually can speak proper english. talk like you got some sense.
change yo ur language like you change your clothes . . it is as simple as that . . do you wear a bikini to a wedding ? Do you wear a tux to the beach ? DUH !!
Language marks how INTELLIGENT one is . . whether true or not it is the perception one emits . . . . and educating and trying to change these ghetto black kids is admitting that the world they come from someone needs fixing . . . and it is true . . correcting them is too risky for the weak-kneed politically correct in this country !
There are a lot of people posting here who know next to nothing about linguistics and the politics of language. It's a complicated subject and at the very root of all of the facile arguments being made here are the seeds of patently racist thought. Worse still is the fact that said racism is completely unconscious and therefore unacknowledged.
Dancing with a bag on your head doesn't guarantee that you will fall off the stage, but it significantly increases the likelihood. In case that doesn't make sense to you: Keep talking your bullshit and your excuses for why black failure rates are so high. Keep blaming white people and don't fix the institutional cultural malfunctions of black people. Demand more useless "help". And that way you get to keep on complaining and coming up with excuses.
@Gulfporter You seem inordinately angry, as if you have an emotional attachment to the subject matter that belies the calmer tone of a person who is approaching it with rational detachment. I'm not sure what experiences have spurred you to become so up-in-arms about the subject, but it seems fairly clear that you are reading a lot more into my words than what I actually said. Also, don't assume I'm African-American. I am not, in fact. But I do have a background in linguistic anthropology.
An equalizer for all black kids! Go to khanacademy org*. This man offers a world class education for free with over 1200+ videos. This guy is like Oprah and your kids can do well on any test.
id love to see a lawyer get up and speak ebonics in front of the judge....Ebonics speaking lawyer:"y'alls litta niggas was just sittin at schoon, mindin day own bidness whan days slaped in da retard class. Dat aint right y'all. Dis is racism." Oposition: "Your honor, what the fuck did he just say?" Judge: Case dismissed, get those kids some schoolin'! Me: Black, white, or whatever...i wouldnt understand that shit.....
is there anything wrong with putting a kid in ebonics in a spec ed class, or speech class for most of the day? You must speak proper english in America to suceed. There is no such thing as language discrimination....
Why didn't you want to send your black kids to MLK black school? Because those dumb fuckers can't cut it, and you know it. You don't want to go to a black school.
If you "refused to accept second best for your sons' You would teach the little bastards to speak English, not drooling, drug addled black Ebonics. Typical Negro Behavior! Thanks for admitting though, that you want to make a SEPARATE language to further distinquish blacks while decrying "segregation", and further insult white America.
@stopglobalswarming. black american english ans slang r not the same. black american gave siouthern ameriican english the drawl which came from african tonal languages thats why blwcks and southern white sound alike. go to a southern white church and hear the preacher talk he/she will sound too similar to a black preacher. now black american english is gaining speakers albeit in a watered down form some people mix english and black english. r some people only take black slang w/o grammar
@stopglobalswarming. u r an idiot. blacks & whites generally sound the same especially if they live in same regions. southern whites sound similar to blacks even the racist ones. black americans r genetically becoming whiter due to mixing but whites r becoming culturally blacker. i would say ebonics is the lingua franca in many areas. blacks should learn how the language they speak is different from standard english. right now we have a continuum instead of dividing line of ebonics vs english
@stopglobalswarming. sspeaking ebonics doesnt make u retarded. the whites that speak ebonics are not retarded. they do what anyone in contact with a dominate language does. they assimilate. thats why white southerners sound different from other whites and blacks in montana dont sound like blacks in black majority areas.
Southern English is clearly related to regional dialects in England and Scotland. It also has some French, Spanish, and African influences, but not much. The "drawl" is actually a small minority of speakers and is an affect generated by the chiefly British upper class habit of speaking very slowly and emphatically to the point at which the listener ceases to care what is being said.
There are two primary southern dialects, Tidewater and Mountain. Negro variation is vernacular.
@Gulfporter. mountain southern dialect is less african influenced as slaves where not big in those areas but in the deep south and coastal areas slaves where big and the african influence is definitly a lot bigger. i would say ebonics is watered down gullah. gullahs were isolated so they kept their language but other blacks begin to talk more white and blacks around blacks begin to talk more black. the same phenom is goin on now but i would say ebonics is gaining alot more white speakers.
I'd say that much of the infusion of black english to the mainstream usage originates in mockery, we should call it a habit rather than the growth of the sub-dialect. I know the Hip Hop folks would like to take credit for this, but it predates them to circa 1970. White people will play at the dialect, but revert to proper English later. The difference is that while blacks might switch to more formal English, you can usually still tell they are black on the phone.
@Gulfporter. of course it is but black english has been influencing white english since slavery. white people that speak ebonics natively and trust there are many dont switch to english later and sound as you say black on the phone. as i said the problem with ebonics is that white exposure is what decreolized and keeps it from recreolizing and also white exposure to ebonics also superficially makes the two appear more similar than they functionally are.
Now that you mention it, when I lived in California, there were people there who apparently thought my speech sounded somewhat black. I knew this because they would imitate me, but exaggerate to make southern sound black if that makes sense to you. I personally find that the deeper in the woods you go, the more difficult it is to understand the white people, and the easier it is to understand the black people.
yea, deeper voice. African Americans have a tendacy to have a deeper tone in their voice. Even black brits tend not to have this. You have a lot of factors playing into it. But its mostly a cultural thing, and nothing is wrong with"sounding black" we should stop associating black with the negative. the black is beautiful campaign happend not to say white is ugly, but simply to say black is jsut as good in light of society labeling it as ugly. we haven't advanced in dialogue yet
They are complaining because they are too stupid to learn proper English? lol!
the Cajuns recieved far worse treatment at the hands of the English, young Cajun children were forced to go to English schools and were punished physically for speaking French.
Before some of you jerkoffs comment on here, I'd suggest opening up your mind a bit and taking that pole out your ass, and then grabbing a drink, looking up "AAVE" on Wikipedia, and sitting down for an interesting, elucidating read. ;)
This is bullshit. Whatever your background you have to learn and demonstrate proper english skills. Most white students don't use proper english all the time either, yet they're expected to demonstrate competency on their assignments. Blacks are only holding themselves back with this. Be my guest, less competition for me.
@sheLovesG I don't think you have a grasp of what proper english means. Language is so closely related to how an individual is in the world, that it is insensitive to say that their way of being them is wrong.
if you have researched into linguistics you will see how different the language structures are between black and white children, at least at the time period that these people were talking about.
@soursourapples Sensitivity has nothing to do with what I said. All students have to demonstrate proper english skills regardless of their background. You ought to google what Bill Cosby says about this crap. I stand by my previous comment.
@sheLovesG again you don't seem to realize that there is no proper english, just recieved english, or official english. the type of english that not everyone grew up with. if you did some research or were a linguist you would realise the differences in the languages of the two, and the difficulties in assimilating to the other.
Why does Bill Cosby saying anything about the issue make it correct? Because he's black? I think I would rather lean toward what I learned from the UCLA lectures :)
@sheLovesG you've digged the dirt real hard there. I like hip hop. I looked at yours too, seems you are just figuring the CAGED system of playing guitar. Only idiots use the CAGED system.
Was can be used as the third-person plural past tense indicative of be, so no it doesn't say it all. It also wouldn't matter if it wasn't as it makes perfect sense in conversation.
@sheLovesG oh it has come to my attention that you are a follower of Jordan Maxwell, the man who believes the word Graduate comes from 'gradually indoctrinate'. My bad, i should have realized you have mental difficulties ;)
I don't think anyone is to be blamed for this. The only thing that we can point our finger to is the media and music (especially hiphop) that young people listen to. Its really sad when i hear people say, "Can you borrow me some money?" or "You was..." or "I speak good".
And its not just African Americans who speak that way, I can assure you that.
It's easy to forget that your language was once a dialect of another because it was so long ago. It's easy to hate a nonstandard form of speaking using arguments founded in YOUR standard way of speaking. Grammar rules of standard language...had to be standardized.
"My kids was tested and was tested and was put into special ed classes"...i believe the word you're looking for is WERE. i know we all mess up our grammer occasionaly, words like who and whom, past tense verbs like sink sank sunk,,,ect...but i've never heard a white person mistake was and were. maybe if your kids knew how to talk, they wouldn't be placed in special ed classes. if a white kid didn't pass the test, they would have gotton the same treatment. stop playing the racist card idiots
@creamyfilling Even as a non English speaker within a a few Scs of reading your comments i easily spotted numerous spelling and punctuation errors. So much for trying to sound smart.
By the way, it's GRAMMAR - Occasionally - and GOTTEN not GOTTON. Eh, you have nothing to do with your dyslexia. You can be Prez one day.
Have you ever been to the UK or heard a Scot, Welsh, Irish folks speaking. They say: " we was, they was". US Southerners are even worst, Even DR Phil. Pute d'imbécile
that's what i mean. simple words that everybody mistakes like gotten and gotton (which differs only in spelling. during casual conversation, the pronunciation is the same, thus going unnoticed). after reading other youtube comments, i think i'm pretty far ahead of the game.
i'm sorry but black english is just the most annoying accent ever. i know they're not all stupid, but ughh. it just makes me cringe when i hear certain blacks talk. if they wanna move into dominate white neighborhoods, that's the risk they take. if i moved into an all black neighborhood, i'd expect to encounter some hardships. that's why i'd avoid moving there. integration isn't always a good thing. just let us be seperate so we stop fighting and creating conflict.
@creamyfilling102 why would you experience hardships? most people around me are black, and I have no problems. You are using your fear to justify your prejudice.
@soursourapples using my fear to justify prejudice. did you get that off a television show or something? i'm not affraid of african americans. it just pisses me off that whenever they have problems with education or crime, it's society's fault because they're black and it's automaticly off limits to assume anybody has brought it upon themselves.
@creamyfilling102 then why did you say you would expect trouble if you moved to a black neighborhood? only someone with no experience or knowledge of the people they live amongst would say something like that. There is so much racism and priviledge wrapped in everything you are saying you don't even notice it..
@soursourapples well i don't mean i'm gonna get bung rapped or anything. it isn't really "trouble" i guess. but i don't expect i would get along as well with peope as in more of a white neighborhood. i would be the different one. as a trucker, i've been to different places around the country and sometimes everybody just stares at you as you walk by. it's a little unsettling when you stick out so much.
Why all the confusion? Look, blacks just arent as smart as whites. All the IQ tests prove it. School grades prove it. Just accept it and move on. Read the book "the bell curve". Ship blacks back to africa where they belong, let them chase zebras.
Did this take place in Ann Arbor or a suburb of Ann Arbor? It's not clear from the description, as Ann Arbor is not a suburb (of Detroit or anywhere) and there is no suburb of Ann Arbor listed.
Actually, yeah. I've read about how African American English works, and it does have intricate meaning behind things like, "He be sick" versus "He sick".
Also, there's a huge shift occuring around the words "were" and "was", so I wouldn't be so quick to judge.
BULLSHIT. NO SHIT your kids will be put in special ed. when this bitch is their mother "my kids was." Then they sue the school because they were not being SENSITIVE enough? Because their mother couldn't teach them their own language? We need to respect all sorts of insane arguments because we fear being called racist or prejudice?! PEOPLE NEED TO GROW SOME BALLS AND TELL PEOPLE LIKE THIS TO GET A REALITY CHECK.
@ManofManyPasswords what the fuck is their own language idiot? Obviously they have to be taught the lingua franca in order to be able to speak it. this makes it not their vernacular since it is not the language they speak naturally.
@ManofManyPasswords You are an idiot of humongous proportion. Your brain is as malnourished as an Ethiopian child in times of famine. So what if the standard America English dialect is on tv and in schools, that still is not the vernacular language of Blacks you twit. Your stupidity will not change that, please educate yourself and you will not appear to be a complete dunce.
Educate myself on what!? LOL I already know that blacks can't speak proper English if their lives depended on it, what else is there to know on this subject you dick. I don't care what they're used to, when I was 1 I was used to going goo goo ga ga, but then I learned how to communicate properly, as people who speak in Ebonics failed to do, haha.
@ManofManyPasswords On what language is you dunce. Study where English comes from and how it developed and then you will realize how dunce you were disrespecting African American language. You have pretty much established your idiocy.
On what language IS I? lol you're so dumb you can't even realize it. I know very well how the English language developed, what does that have to do with anything. The only difference between American English and British English is the accent and some jargon, but the rules of grammar are always kept. Come on dick, ebonics is a disgrace, and you're extremely stupid.
@ManofManyPasswords wow idiot stop lying you dont know shit about what a language is."Grammar is always kept" Dumb cunt you think language ends at grammar retentions. And you use American English vs British English as your example wtf are you that stupid? Ill give you some terms to research so you wouldn't be as dunce as you sound now ok little period pussy brain boy? Slang, dialect, vernacular, pidgin, creole, superstratum, substratum and add stratum. Use at least 5 scholarly sources.
@ManofManyPasswords lol little period pussy brain boy you are a dunce you have not yet reported back with your assignment. My GPA at a majority white college is 3.65 deans list every semester for 3 years and I don't even do my best. I speak and write English much better than most. I can write in English or standard American dialect. A fool like you is hopeless. Goodbye dunce period pussy brain boy.
hate africans? you should not have brought there here...im sure you could have grown your own rice sugar cane, indgo, cocao and coffee after all England could do it all...
I agree that Ebonics is trash, I would never give someone who spoke Ebonics a job, they would probably try to sue me for racial discrimination, but I'd just be like, they can't speak English that's all.
@isabelleac. i consider ebonics a semi-creole or a waterdown creole or a english dialect influence by some creole possibly gullah. ebonics and english are not the same but they are intelligible. ebonics probably would have recreolized if it wont for white exposure as in white learning ebonics mainly thru slang and even bein influenced by its grammar and thats y it seems so much like english but the truth is white english is becoming more ebonicized (mostly slang but also grammar).
I wonder, though, if you would be able to post the segment on Cliff Nass and Don Mesaro's Baldi computer and suspicion when it comes to "Mixed-matched" speech (i.e an African American speaking MAE (Mainstream American English) being met with suspicion and assumptions of a lack of intelligence because the voice does not fit into the listener's stereotype.
While in any other country speak you will need to speak their language. If I do not speak their language correctly I do not expect them to say I have created another language. When did ignorance become a right? Poor or not , parents have the responsibility to teach their children to speak properly. These people who helped these young men talk like field hands have done them, and our country a great disservice.
who defines what proper english is??? society? well after the alienation of an entire population of people through racism, and segregation it's kind of difficult to get them to assimilate back into your "correct" way of thinking right? I DIGRESS.
the african american vernacular is itself considered a language because it can function through logic to verbally express an idea.
The english language is a vernacular of older languages too and once was itself a "field hand's" language. So do you expect america to create laws to prohibit people from speaking a logical language? Sounds like a contradiction to "the home of the free" to me...
How can it express an idea of any value if the only people who can understand it are people who have no desire or understanding of how to function in our society? Our society is not africa. Go to africa and speak like that. Oh, By the way, africans have no use for American blacks. I guess it is because you do not desire or understand how to function in a society you claim as your own. Dayum yo sho is smart!!!
I'm sorry you feel that way but I already made my point. It's an african-AMERICAN vernacular. Society isn't a monster on a hill, it's created by the people within it. Everyone within a society defines and articulates it, changes and manipulates it. Clearly i'm not the only one that feels this way because modern linguistics accepts it as well.
So stop thinking you're better than other people with no backing.
And once again, you contradict the very premise your country was built upon. freedom
Ebonics is the most moronic concept ever invented. It has done a huge disservice to the black community. Why is it consider cool to sound like a fucking idiot when you speak? It's as if black youths feel reluctant to sound intelligent for fear of ridicule from their peers.
No dude, see, they don't CHOOSE to sound like that. They just do. Think about the south, or New Yorkers. They can sound pretty stupid sometimes too. It's just what you grow up hearing that makes you sound a certain way.
and let me say this I didn't watch the video so I can't argue with the video but I don't care if your black or white your not changing my position of beliving is pathetic school structure for blacks. If schools know it's a problem to speak a certain way then they should fix the shit. And it's more then talking it's writing to some people not only BLACK PEOPLE write in some crazy ass language you can't even read because they can't spell worth a shit. No child left behind my ass!
OK look man im black and let me say this EBONICS ISN'T A DAM DIALECT! It's a result of poor schools that blacks have to attend and the pathetic excuse for teachers who never correct us. 99% of kids don't know they don't speak this so called mainstream English! The job of schools is to teach and correct problems that will hinder you from being successful and the schools inner city blacks go to don't do it plain and simple. Fix the dam schools and help the kids!
To be honest, this is a topic covered in many culture and human geography classes in college... and the consensus is that it is. A dialect does not have to follow ''rules'' to be a dialect. In fact, many languages arose from the broken sentence structures and mixture of languages in other times. The western concept of "standardization" has brought a change to that. How are we to say that it isn't a language?
Whats strange about that, is that, its true. People in america (west) feel like, if its not accordinding to how it is for them, then there's something wrong with it or you...
Because the reality is white America won't allow it. WHich means teaching kids it's OK to say dat, wit and so on is right is setting them up for failure. Let's keep it real they still the ones handing out the jobs so fucked up as it may be they set up the rules. Schools need to play by the rules until it's enough of us with economical power to create rules for ourselves. I stand by what I said it's not a dialect quit allowing america to trick you into believing it is.
every group that has finaly "made it" in this country has had to learn "main stream english"...the Germans, the Italians, Asians, etc. It has nothing to do with racism. People have to be able to "understand you when you speak". Notice how the "black lawers" in this video ALL SPEAK MAIN STREAM English....and you want to know why??? Because they could not win ANY case in court speaking Ebonics. NO one would understand them.
What is african american english??
Im black and i get told all the time that because i speak proper english that i'm speaking "like a white person" and that i have to speak poorly and curse alot to speak "African American English"
Can someone please clear this up for me
mamasaidnotaz1 5 days ago
Good God, if these apes cannot speak English properly, what are we meant to do about it? Just because a black person fails at school, it doesn't mean the teacher or the school is racist, it means the kid is stupid; same with whites, same with Hispanics and same with Asians- no never mind, those fuckers know everything.

Clairevoyante 11 months ago
@Clairevoyante You have no idea of my educational level. I do have the facts straight and stating the truth does not make one a racist. Every study done shows that blacks overall, have a lesser cognitive level than whites and orientals. The fact that the truth does not comport with what you wish was true is your problem, not mine. Do some reading & research, you will see what the truth is.
rhm51 10 months ago
@rhm51 So name me studies, I really want to look at them. Because what you are saying is very shocking and not moral. Tell me how it's possible to have a corrolation between the skin colour and the linguistic and intellectual capacities. And also, tell me how linguistic capacities are realated to intelligence. Tell me. Because I know there is no corrolation between the 2. And Gosh tell me where you studied, because I plan never to go there.
Clairevoyante 10 months ago
@Clairevoyante You cant be that dimwitted. It is not their skin that makes them less intelligent, it is merely a characteristic of the their race, just like skin color, kinky hair, flat noses, higher rates of heart disease, Sickle cell anemia etc. I woulde love to know how my stating a fact is not "moral". Liberals are masters at trying to denigrate those with whom they disagree. When the facts arent on their side they personally impugn their opponents. You need to grow up.
rhm51 10 months ago 2
@Clairevoyante Lastly, as for not wanting to go to school where I did, I dont think you need to worry, I seriously doubt you could pass the entrance exam.
rhm51 10 months ago
@rhm51 You can still hide behind your ''facts'' but I still haven't heard from those studies you mentioned and the school you are in. And what is your major, neuroscience? I'm a linguistics major in the best Canadian university, so I could probably pass your entrance exam.
Clairevoyante 10 months ago
@Clairevoyante The studies while not at hand, were part of the masters program at The University of Virginia in anthropology from which I was graduated.
rhm51 10 months ago

Clairevoyante 10 months ago
@Clairevoyante I don't WANT to learn ebonics. It's useless.
hannityforpres 10 months ago
@hannityforpres Useless? Learning a language that is spoken in your country is useless? Anyway that's not what I meant, I mean learning to understand the ''phenomenon'' of ebonics, understanding the language itself as a distinct language.
Clairevoyante 10 months ago
@Clairevoyante It is a dialect spoken by an uneducated, criminal underclass, so it will never be accepted.
hannityforpres 10 months ago
@hannityforpres as long as people will still carry prejudice on this group of speakers, Ebonics will remain unaccepted, indeed! And that's very unfortunate.
Clairevoyante 10 months ago
@Clairevoyante Why is it unfortunate? Ebonics should die. And I'm sick of hearing about predjudice. Its not racism keeping blacks down, it's their lower IQ's and lack of interest in school. Those things keep them down, but they blame racism.
hannityforpres 10 months ago
@hannityforpres Language diversity is important to maintain (anywhere). And YES this is called racism: pick up a white boy and a black boy in any elementary school, and you'll find a way to say that the white one will have more success in his life. And based on what? Lower IQ and lack of interest? Maybe if you told all the black people out there that they had the same chances of succeeding in life maybe they'd have a greater interest in school. It's not a biological thing. It's purely social.
Clairevoyante 10 months ago
@Clairevoyante
and the social aspect of being a racist means thinking it is biological. Dunno. the US is split bvetween those with an authoritarian mindset, and those without. the ones that have this mindset are easy to manipulate and control, and also they get their voice heard more often than not.
lordblazer 9 months ago
@hannityforpres Out of the 53 dialects in this country and you say ebonics should die is why it's racist. You have picked 1 dialect out of the other 53 that you claim to be invalid only shows a predisposition towards racism and oppression. Lack of interest in schools is due to brainwashing. For example, it's like teach indian children that Columbus discovered America. It's simply wrong. All languages have dialects and since I speak 3 other languages I should know, that no dialect is wrong.
Ryooken 5 months ago
@Ryooken Yes, but some dialects are viewed as unacceptable in a business situation. I have a job where I hire people, and I know that in a sales situation, a person speaking ebonics will fail. As for teaching about Columbus, everyone knows that Indians and Vikings and probably a few other people were here before Columbus. The difference, of course, is that Columbus reported the new lands to the civilized world, and produced maps that others could follow.
hannityforpres 5 months ago
@hannityforpres That's racist BS. We have elected presidents that speak all of the 53 dialects. Mostly southern white dialects and you are telling me that they are acceptable? Please it's utter nonsense. It's just racist propaganda that some dialects are acceptable and some are not. Oh BS Europe was not a civilized world. If they were actually civilized then they wouldn't have invaded north and south America. Let's be clear there is nothing wrong with African American English period.
Ryooken 5 months ago
@Ryooken Excuse me, but I didnt say that I had a problem with ebonics. Whether I do or not doesnt matter. What DOES matter is that a salesperson wont be successful speaking that way. Maybe its because too many customers are racist. And Europe whatever you think of it, WAS civilized. Civilization is DEFINED by shared knowledge. The various countries had books, maps, published and shared knowledge. The natives elsewhwere did not.
hannityforpres 5 months ago
@hannityforpres Actually you did but be that as it may. If we can have presidents that speak using other dialects, people in sales are the problem racism is. To say that someone because of their dialect is black won't be successful when we have people in sales in America with Aussie dialects, Cockney dialects, Boston dialects, south dialects, he we even have a white guy on TV giving cooking instructions using the Creole dialect. It's racism plain and simple.
Ryooken 5 months ago
@Ryooken Racism by the customers, yes. As a person doing the hiring, you must find someone who will be successful.
hannityforpres 5 months ago
@hannityforpres Then those persons should not be in business period. If I go to Kentucky and listen to white people speak southern dialect, I don't suddenly refuse to shop there.
Ryooken 5 months ago
@Ryooken YOU don't , but many people do. Those people are customers. If they dont like the salesman, they dont buy.
hannityforpres 5 months ago
@hannityforpres It's that kind of bigotry that should not be catered to. It's the same basic bs that kept black people from shopping in stores but I will tell you what. Since you feel that way I will suggest to ALL black people that they not shop in any store that discriminates against people for the way they speak. You also realize that it's illegal to do this in the USA right? I hope so.
Ryooken 5 months ago
@Ryooken Ok, you take a job where you must hire salespeople, go ahead and hire young blacks who speak like that and see how they do.
hannityforpres 5 months ago
@hannityforpres Oh please they will do fine especially in black neighborhoods. Again that is not the point. You can argue that all day long but it's still discrimination period. This is just another way of saying that black language is illegitimate which is false.
Ryooken 5 months ago
@Ryooken If you say that learning standard midwest dialogue English is the most easy to understand and therefore everyone should use it. Yeah I agree but for you to say that every other Eurocentric is acceptable and African American isn't that's discrimination and illegal. It's that simple.
Ryooken 5 months ago
@Ryooken Ummm...our customers are not located in "black neighborhoods".
hannityforpres 5 months ago
@hannityforpres Whether they are or not isn't the issue. The issue is that your opinion is false. I said that would be valued and particularly in the black community. I did not say that they would be valued only in the black community.

@ctraver the difference, in america, the dialect of misuse of hte english language is intentional, big difference

most white people cant really understand ebonics but they are two type that can those that are receptive as in can understand but can speak and the others are those that can speak who are culturally no different from other ebonic speaker. white thats play at ebonics but can never really perfect and often speak english with ebonic slang which is not the same as a person who uses its grammar like my grandma but not the slang again my grandma.
mykole84 1 year ago
the funny thing about ebonics is it is an american based language as its was born here in america. the other funny thing is that it is gaining speakers and spreading beyond the inner cities. two things seem to makes its identity hard to define & thats white exposure to it and it goes both way as in constant white english exposure is the only reason hasnt recreolized and ebonics influence on white english is making appear closer to english than it really is. white english is ebonicizing.

its similar to southern american english actually. ITs never always been confined in the inner cities. Even middle class and upper middle class african americans speak it in one way or another. This isn't unique if you're talking about linguistics in many countries.
lordblazer 1 year ago
@lordblazer. as a native speaker f ebonics i know it wont confined to just inner city areas but that is where its having the biggest influence on non-natives. its actually was born in rural southern areas and the similarities to SAE are both superficial and real. but yeah the problem with it is the fact that its being absorb into english hence why SAE and Ebonics are similar and the fact that although it will never be a standard language even though it has its own rules that do and

mykole84 1 year ago
@stopglobalswarming. sspeaking ebonics doesnt make u retarded. the whites that speak ebonics are not retarded. they do what anyone in contact with a dominate language does. they assimilate. thats why white southerners sound different from other whites and blacks in montana dont sound like blacks in black majority areas.
mykole84 1 year ago
@mykole84
Gulfporter 1 year ago
@Gulfporter. mountain southern dialect is less african influenced as slaves where not big in those areas but in the deep south and coastal areas slaves where big and the african influence is definitly a lot bigger. i would say ebonics is watered down gullah. gullahs were isolated so they kept their language but other blacks begin to talk more white and blacks around blacks begin to talk more black. the same phenom is goin on now but i would say ebonics is gaining alot more white speakers.
mykole84 1 year ago
@mykole84
Gulfporter 1 year ago
@Gulfporter. of course it is but black english has been influencing white english since slavery. white people that speak ebonics natively and trust there are many dont switch to english later and sound as you say black on the phone. as i said the problem with ebonics is that white exposure is what decreolized and keeps it from recreolizing and also white exposure to ebonics also superficially makes the two appear more similar than they functionally are.
mykole84 1 year ago
@mykole84
Gulfporter 1 year ago
@Gulfporter
yea, deeper voice. African Americans have a tendacy to have a deeper tone in their voice. Even black brits tend not to have this. You have a lot of factors playing into it. But its mostly a cultural thing, and nothing is wrong with"sounding black" we should stop associating black with the negative. the black is beautiful campaign happend not to say white is ugly, but simply to say black is jsut as good in light of society labeling it as ugly. we haven't advanced in dialogue yet

sheLovesG 1 year ago
@sheLovesG I don't think you have a grasp of what proper english means. Language is so closely related to how an individual is in the world, that it is insensitive to say that their way of being them is wrong.
if you have researched into linguistics you will see how different the language structures are between black and white children, at least at the time period that these people were talking about.
soursourapples 1 year ago
@soursourapples Sensitivity has nothing to do with what I said. All students have to demonstrate proper english skills regardless of their background. You ought to google what Bill Cosby says about this crap. I stand by my previous comment.
sheLovesG 1 year ago
@sheLovesG again you don't seem to realize that there is no proper english, just recieved english, or official english. the type of english that not everyone grew up with. if you did some research or were a linguist you would realise the differences in the languages of the two, and the difficulties in assimilating to the other.

"My kids was tested and was tested and was put into special ed classes"...i believe the word you're looking for is WERE. i know we all mess up our grammer occasionaly, words like who and whom, past tense verbs like sink sank sunk,,,ect...but i've never heard a white person mistake was and were. maybe if your kids knew how to talk, they wouldn't be placed in special ed classes. if a white kid didn't pass the test, they would have gotton the same treatment. stop playing the racist card idiots
creamyfilling102 1 year ago
@creamyfilling Even as a non English speaker within a a few Scs of reading your comments i easily spotted numerous spelling and punctuation errors. So much for trying to sound smart.
By the way, it's GRAMMAR - Occasionally - and GOTTEN not GOTTON. Eh, you have nothing to do with your dyslexia. You can be Prez one day.
Have you ever been to the UK or heard a Scot, Welsh, Irish folks speaking. They say: " we was, they was". US Southerners are even worst, Even DR Phil. Pute d'imbécile
xiominiac 1 year ago
that's what i mean. simple words that everybody mistakes like gotten and gotton (which differs only in spelling. during casual conversation, the pronunciation is the same, thus going unnoticed). after reading other youtube comments, i think i'm pretty far ahead of the game.

i'm sorry but black english is just the most annoying accent ever. i know they're not all stupid, but ughh. it just makes me cringe when i hear certain blacks talk. if they wanna move into dominate white neighborhoods, that's the risk they take. if i moved into an all black neighborhood, i'd expect to encounter some hardships. that's why i'd avoid moving there. integration isn't always a good thing. just let us be seperate so we stop fighting and creating conflict.
creamyfilling102 1 year ago
@creamyfilling102 why would you experience hardships? most people around me are black, and I have no problems. You are using your fear to justify your prejudice.
soursourapples 1 year ago
@soursourapples using my fear to justify prejudice. did you get that off a television show or something? i'm not affraid of african americans. it just pisses me off that whenever they have problems with education or crime, it's society's fault because they're black and it's automaticly off limits to assume anybody has brought it upon themselves.
creamyfilling102 1 year ago
@creamyfilling102 then why did you say you would expect trouble if you moved to a black neighborhood? only someone with no experience or knowledge of the people they live amongst would say something like that. There is so much racism and priviledge wrapped in everything you are saying you don't even notice it..
soursourapples 1 year ago
@soursourapples well i don't mean i'm gonna get bung rapped or anything. it isn't really "trouble" i guess. but i don't expect i would get along as well with peope as in more of a white neighborhood. i would be the different one. as a trucker, i've been to different places around the country and sometimes everybody just stares at you as you walk by. it's a little unsettling when you stick out so much.
creamyfilling102 1 year ago
Why all the confusion? Look, blacks just arent as smart as whites. All the IQ tests prove it. School grades prove it. Just accept it and move on. Read the book "the bell curve". Ship blacks back to africa where they belong, let them chase zebras.

But it's not causation, more so a lurking variable of finanicial/social class.
Perhaps some genetics, but I doubt too much. Definately a small bit there though.

Did this take place in Ann Arbor or a suburb of Ann Arbor? It's not clear from the description, as Ann Arbor is not a suburb (of Detroit or anywhere) and there is no suburb of Ann Arbor listed.

"Mah kids was tested and was tested and put...". Is that "African-American English" too?
PompousFlea 2 years ago

ManofManyPasswords 2 years ago
@ManofManyPasswords what the fuck is their own language idiot? Obviously they have to be taught the lingua franca in order to be able to speak it. this makes it not their vernacular since it is not the language they speak naturally.

English you asshole, don't try to rationalize or make excuses. Proper English is everywhere; in school, on T.V., etc.
ManofManyPasswords 1 year ago
@ManofManyPasswords You are an idiot of humongous proportion. Your brain is as malnourished as an Ethiopian child in times of famine. So what if the standard America English dialect is on tv and in schools, that still is not the vernacular language of Blacks you twit. Your stupidity will not change that, please educate yourself and you will not appear to be a complete dunce.
allianceFiLifeDotCom 1 year ago
Educate myself on what!? LOL I already know that blacks can't speak proper English if their lives depended on it, what else is there to know on this subject you dick. I don't care what they're used to, when I was 1 I was used to going goo goo ga ga, but then I learned how to communicate properly, as people who speak in Ebonics failed to do, haha.
ManofManyPasswords 1 year ago
@ManofManyPasswords On what language is you dunce. Study where English comes from and how it developed and then you will realize how dunce you were disrespecting African American language. You have pretty much established your idiocy.
allianceFiLifeDotCom 1 year ago
On what language IS I? lol you're so dumb you can't even realize it. I know very well how the English language developed, what does that have to do with anything. The only difference between American English and British English is the accent and some jargon, but the rules of grammar are always kept. Come on dick, ebonics is a disgrace, and you're extremely stupid.
ManofManyPasswords 1 year ago
@ManofManyPasswords wow idiot stop lying you dont know shit about what a language is."Grammar is always kept" Dumb cunt you think language ends at grammar retentions. And you use American English vs British English as your example wtf are you that stupid? Ill give you some terms to research so you wouldn't be as dunce as you sound now ok little period pussy brain boy? Slang, dialect, vernacular, pidgin, creole, superstratum, substratum and add stratum. I can write in English or standard American dialect. A fool like you is hopeless. Goodbye dunce period pussy brain boy.

I agree that Ebonics is trash, I would never give someone who spoke Ebonics a job, they would probably try to sue me for racial discrimination, but I'd just be like, they can't speak English that's all.
ManofManyPasswords 1 year ago
dimeloloco: African American Vernacular English is a dialect within the English language, not a language within its own right.
It has its own grammatical rules, syntax, phonetics, etc. and is therefore not simply "poor" English either.
isabelleac 2 years ago
@isabelleac. i consider ebonics a semi-creole or a waterdown creole or a english dialect influence by some creole possibly gullah. ebonics and english are not the same but they are intelligible. ebonics probably would have recreolized if it wont for white exposure as in white learning ebonics mainly thru slang and even bein influenced by its grammar and thats y it seems so much like english but the truth is white english is becoming more ebonicized (mostly slang but also grammar).

Great posts! That was a great PBS program...
I can't find the video ANYWHERE on the INTERNET!

I haven't seen that video before, but, randomly, there was an Oprah show that talked about that - you may be able to find a clip of it somewhere.

The language is english in this country.
While in any other country speak you will need to speak their language. If I do not speak their language correctly I do not expect them to say I have created another language. When did ignorance become a right? Poor or not , parents have the responsibility to teach their children to speak properly. These people who helped these young men talk like field hands have done them, and our country a great disservice.
columbusification 2 years ago
who defines what proper english is??? society? well after the alienation of an entire population of people through racism, and segregation it's kind of difficult to get them to assimilate back into your "correct" way of thinking right? I DIGRESS.
the african american vernacular is itself considered a language because it can function through logic to verbally express an idea.
dimeloloco 2 years ago
The english language is a vernacular of older languages too and once was itself a "field hand's" language. So do you expect america to create laws to prohibit people from speaking a logical language? Sounds like a contradiction to "the home of the free" to me...
dimeloloco 2 years ago
How can it express an idea of any value if the only people who can understand it are people who have no desire or understanding of how to function in our society? Our society is not africa. Go to africa and speak like that. Oh, By the way, africans have no use for American blacks. I guess it is because you do not desire or understand how to function in a society you claim as your own. Dayum yo sho is smart!!!
columbusification 2 years ago

MojoPin83 2 years ago
@MojoPin83

No child left behind my ass!
liltr44 3 years ago
OK look man im black and let me say this EBONICS ISN'T A DAM DIALECT! It's a result of poor schools that blacks have to attend and the pathetic excuse for teachers who never correct us. 99% of kids don't know they don't speak this so called mainstream English! The job of schools is to teach and correct problems that will hinder you from being successful and the schools inner city blacks go to don't do it plain and simple. Fix the dam schools and help the kids!
liltr44 3 years ago 2
To be honest, this is a topic covered in many culture and human geography classes in college... and the consensus is that it is. A dialect does not have to follow ''rules'' to be a dialect. In fact, many languages arose from the broken sentence structures and mixture of languages in other times. The western concept of "standardization" has brought a change to that. How are we to say that it isn't a language?
x77uqabr6 3 years ago
Whats strange about that, is that, its true. People in america (west) feel like, if its not accordinding to how it is for them, then there's something wrong with it or you...
elderbrenen 3 years ago
