I'm teaching in Japan and I just taught my 5th graders about "bless you". Even the teacher's couldn't grasp the concept that there's no real meaning to the words it's just the polite thing to say. haha Nice cultural note.
@strokerman01 Actually the meaning came from the thought that when you sneeze, your heart stops for a moment. So saying "God bless you" was pretty much the way of saying "Lord please let this person survive this sneeze."
@animemusicgal23 Actually the meaning predates that as people thought that your soul was trying to escape. However, that's the origin of the word, not the meaning. No one believes that anymore so it would be inaccurate to tell someone that's the meaning of the word. Currently, the words hold no meaning. It's simply something you say to be polite to someone else. There are many words in English with no meaning currently although they used to have a specific meaning.
@strokerman01 I guess everyone has a different view on things. I've certainly never heard of it "losing meaning" until now. I have heard of the soul thing, but I more commonly hear of the heart theory. I mean... just because the original belief is lost... is it really just so easy to say it's lost meaning? I guess to me, as long as something has an origin, it still has meaning... even if not believed.
@animemusicgal23 So if someone asked you "what does bless you mean? How do you say that in Japanese" you'd explain to them you say it because your heart stops for a second and then give them the Japanese translation (since none actually exists to my knowledge) of "thank goodness you're alright because your heart just stopped for a second"? or "Get well soon. You almost just died"? Also, according to that words like "fiddlesticks" have actual meaning. Which they don't.
@strokerman01 Unless if someone asked you what "fiddlesticks" means you would say it means a bow for a violin. At which point you'd have to explain why you just said it when you just made a mistake or someone said something stupid. Every word on earth has some origin. Not every word in English has an actual meaning. There's a difference between "you say it when...." and "it means ____". You say "ouch" when you stub your toe, but it doesn't actually MEAN anything.
@strokerman01, Actually, people used to believe that your soul could be thrown from your body or that sneezing opened your body to invasion by the Devil or evil spirits or that it was your body's effort to force out an invading evil spirit. So "bless you" or "God bless you" was used as a sort of shield against evil. And like most customs of old, the expression stayed but the meaning did not. :)
Not bad at all...even your pronunciation of culture is pretty good...and that has to be one of the hardest English words to pronounce for a native Japanese speaker.
One bad habit you have picked up is the insipid use of the word "like". In the context you use it, it is used by generally vapid Americans as a verbal tick or crutch and has no place in intelligent conversation. Use "like" only when you are trying to say you enjoy something or someone or in direct comparisons of one thing to another; never as a quotative preface or as a vacuous filler.
Don't listen to the people leaving bad comments on this video, you are doing good, and it's good you take interest in learning English, I am trying to learn Japanese, I just started today, ugh I keep watching the same lesson video over AND over. I need to find someone to interact with xD

hahaha bless you~ thats cute as hell. U have a cute ... accent? well u don't really have an accent really. But whatever it is your voice sounds really cute. But yeah hahah sometimes in my classes 10 girls will say bless you to one person who sneezes. America deshoo ne?
As an American learning Japanese, I started to wonder about the things I would say that I take for granted... When somebody sneezed in my Japanese class, several students turned around to say "Bless you" to him and it struck me how strange that must seem to my Japanese teacher.
It's funny to think that the custom of saying "bless you" to somebody who has sneezed originated from the days of the plague. Back then a sneeze was considered to be an early symptom of the plague.
