suboreo, don't mistake skin color as a causal factor, it is just a result of the genes, just as personality traits can also be determined by one's genetic makeup. You just make the observations and record them truthfully if you're intellectually honest about it. There are many real, general biological differences between the races, physical, emotional, and mental, many determined by our genes. Skin color is just one. Groups who don't want those honest observations made try to confuse the issue.

You provided a quite convincing argument, yes, whether we would like to admit it or not, race does play a role in this election. People have come out in record numbers to vote because, as you pointed out, they see Barack Obama's potential (or alleged potential depending on where you stand) of bring people of a colors together like never before. That's not to say that one should vote for him simply because he's black, (if so Jesse Jackson should have won god help us) but it certainly helps.

More BS. Most African Americans are decendents of the Mende peoples. The Mende started the kingdom of Benin. A highly advanced and structured African kingdom, that even gained the respect of European explores. They had clothing, social classes, running water, argriculture, and domestication. Others also came from the kingdom of Kongo. Another African kingdom which was highly respected by Europeans. I concede that this particular kingdom wore loin clothes. Clothes were reserved for royalty.

This actually works against you. The area of Niger was claimed by the empires of Songhai, Mali, the Dendi Kingdom, Gao, and Kanem-Bornu, as well as a number of Hausa states. I can gaurentee that these people werent "savages". The British didnt conquer the ENTIRE continent. They met opposition from the Ashanti Empire. I promise, THIS kingdom was respected. I won't be accepting your guarantee. The tropical regional africans are animals. The British eventually defeated the ashantis and diplomatically colonized them by 1900. The ashantis were however, able to hold out for a long time w/ their Portugese guns and British guns gotten from gold and slave trading. Africans selling their own people. How vain is that? Kudos to them. It's a good thing africa has natural resources. Otherwise no one would ever go there.

You're right. Africans did sell their own people and its a damn shame. But slavery in Africa & slavery in Europe had two very different connotations. In Africa, slavery just meant you were just a servant. A job per se. You could own a home, get paid, and even marry into the masters house. The werent thought of as less human. Tribes to this day celebrate an apologize day for what they did to other tribes back then. I went to Nigera two years ago and saw it. How civilized do you think I am so far?

As far as affirmitive action goes, I dont that I got it. I graduated high school with a 3.0 and had a bright futures scholorship, so I dont think I applied. As far as the name changes goes, hey we went from do wop, swing, jazz & blues, rock n roll, hiphop(the good kind, not that MTV/BET Solja Boy bullshit), so I guess you're right on that. Im Haitian, and I dont know why, but we feel a closer connection to Africa than many Black Americans.

I respect Haiti. A country of all Africans. Haiti has it's own culture. African Americans are constantly pounded with American Patriotism. There is no mainstream encouragement of exploring and being proud of ones heritage. When we do we are labeled racist. I work with a Haitian. He is the nicest and most friendly African I've ever met.

You hit the nail right on the head with that one. Im not going to lie, I see that also. Someone asked me something one time that I couldnt answer. She asked, "Why is there an Ebony & Black Hair magazine, but an Ivory & White Hair magazine would be considered racist?" I was absolutely stumped. Anyone is free to explore their heritage. No one is saying black people can't be proud of who they are, it's when black people attack whites for doing the same thing thats the problem. Black people were brought over as slaves and incorporated into American society. What you are saying is that Black people don't like living in a country founded by British colonists? Slavery existed everywhere. most countries just accept that the world went through that period and move on. People here can't seem to. Partially because most Americans don't realize that nearly every current 1st world nation had slavery hundreds of years ago. Brazil didn't get rid of it until 1888 and there's no Brazil guilt over there.

Depends on what part of Africa, I believe you are refering to the west African/ivory coast version, whereas it would be much different in East or North Africa, which did not have as much of a chummy master/slave relationship as the cultural practice you are talking about. But yes you are right in that one was a pastoral/subsitance ag. type of slavery vs. industrial ag. slavery.

how do you know where you there? From the slaves own testimony seems they were treated really well over here. Read something called the slave narratives taken from 3000 of the survivors in the 30's. it's amazing nobody has access to these in school. Really puts things into perspective.

Brilliant.
He is simply but effectively pointing out that race (as well as other unchangeable attributes) does matter. It does play a role in shaping our perceptions, whether we want it too or not; like it or not. Only the fool would base their decision on race or another such attribute, however. But all of our attributes do help shape who we are, and therefore people's perceptions of us. This is too close to crossing the line of political correctness, but there is nothing negative about it.
