  • ANYONE who says this bunkai is far-fetched just doesn't have the acumen to do it, so what comes out of their mouth is, "it doesn't work". That's because they are too lazy to do it right.

  • Um salve para os praticantes brasileiros de Karate, principalmente do estilo Shotokan. sou faixa roxa do estilo shotokan. parabéns pelo vídeo.

  • Nice ideas, but in all my years I've never had anyone on the street attack me in a karate stance. Also I think look more of a head lock as opposed to trying to block with the elbow! OSU!!

Okinawa kara (kode) te was an art very similar to Chin Na or even Jujitsu

  • This is not bunkai! Bunkai sticks strictly to the desgnated moves. This is 'oyo', and unrealistic oyo at that....

  • great!

  • Exactly its not a literal way of fighting like a lot of people think it is, but if you never train in such a way you will never know of the techniques and throws, it also helps you to appreciate the complexity of martial art unless some others like tkd. If you go to any of these hight street cash making clubs you will never do bunkai in this manner, there is more to the arts than fighting.

  • hahahaha: i loved the video, very well done and the sound when the camera moved was amazing :D thousand thumbs up for you!

  • Respect the bunkai, but what you see is not to my liking as this developed. I wonder what does this tune that is at the end of the video. That makes it funny, but not serious.

  • These Bunkai look enjoyable to do and are certainly way better than most Japanese Sensei teach. However fun is one thing and realistic is another. That's why there are different levels of Bunkai, Oyo, Henka Oyo and so on. At least the Bunkai on this video manage to give the feel of what a move is capable of and should aid the kata practice. But as Self Defence I'd opt for running everytime ;)

  • @spector131 - morto-uke forces the opposite hip to engange, with a strong hook punch it may go through a single hand block, or (they didnt show) was it could be a single handed block and the backup hand is a punch to the bicep to deaden the arm. @eisbombenhagel- what??? Do you understand bunkai? It could be you have hands in your pockets, broken wrists or anything, karate believes in "always be ready to defend". The attackers lining up just is an easy way to practice, its not a real fight !!!

  • @weavercomputers Yeah, right. This is not a real fight and those are not real fighting techniques. If you believe that this makes you "always ready to defend" yourself then I really hope you don't get into a bad situation because you'd make a bad experience. Trust me. And yes, I know what bunkai and oyo are. Any kata analysis that leads into an attack by multiple attackers is "nonsense" – just to freely quote Mabuni Kenwa...

  • Street fighter mode at the 1:26 period. I love being a karateka

  • Do Shotokan practitioners compete to come up with "Bunkai" that would never really work. For example :21.The attacker must have the world's strongest hook punch, because it was nessecary to block it with 2 hands. It is also a good thing that he can't throw a hook with the other hand because then he might have swung for the head rather than throwing at the chest.I mean after all everyone punches people in the chest. I mean think of all the chest punch knockout videos here on youtube.

  • This is a great interpretaion of Bunkia..post some more...we need more lateral thinking when it comes to Bunkia

  • @DagenhamGilly Yeah! Great! From 0:53 on there is even an application if you are attacked by Shotokan practicioners that wait in queue to attack you for the case that you accidentionally glued your fists to your hips! That's real "lateral" thinking!

  • @eisbombenhagel or more credibly you're attacked whilst walking along with your hands in your jacket pockets and cant get them out in time to defend yourself ;)

  • @tbuksuperfly I'm sure the attackers could wait some more time for you to take your hands out of your pockets.

  • @tbuksuperfly Oh! And of course it's more credibly that a karate master from subtropic Okinawa works eight to fifteen years on five kata, just to take the very special case into account that someone is attacked while walking frustrated down the street with his ma-1 flight jacket on. Sure. Or did I miss some irony?

  • @eisbombenhagel you haven't missed the irony, but you have missed the point of bunkai. who knows why this particular move was performed in this way. but consider that bunkai is about finding applications to scenarios that come from your experience and thought process. then yes, in this day and age (especially this time of year) it would be very common to be walking down the street with your hands in your pockets, and thank god you know a technique that can incorporate that eventuality ;) heh

  • @tbuksuperfly [1] If it should be like that then I'd surely missed the point of bunkai. But in that case you missed the point of doable self defense. Bunkai is not more than a crutch to get long lost knowledge back –a fun one for people who like historic riddles, most certainly. It wasn't part of pre-Meiji karate because at that time you learned kata and then fought after the instructions your teacher gave you. But these instructions weren't passed along after 1900.

  • @tbuksuperfly [2] This is provable. Also, if you are searching for self defense applications then going to a kata and trying to get anything out of it but ignoring fighting principles (which also are in the pinan kata) is most certainly the wrong approach. This hands in the pockets thingie sounds like a cheap excuse for bad applications, because the hands are out of the jacket quite quickly and in an realistic situation you would actually use the movements and principles quite differently...

  • @tbuksuperfly [3] The funny thing now is that there are people that are able to reconstruct HEMA that are lost for ages just out of books and pictures but seemingly most karate practioners are not – even if the movements are similar. The way out of that trap would be to question "tradition", where that "tradition" comes from and who made it up. That would be the first step to bunkai. The second would be to question what the purpose of karate was and where the origins lay. But this is no bunkai!

  • i like that potencial weapon attack can be dodged by foot

  • Very nice, It amazes me how some instructors teach Kata and have no idea what it is they are doing,or teaching . Looks a bit like Asai Sensei's free form ,large fearless movements. Bravo

  • I need the bunkai of Heian Godan and Tekki Shodan >_<

  • Would it not be very dangerous to block punches using the legs ?

  • Клоуны!

  • Great atheleticism, but this was really too far fetched. Those high kicks are not in the kata, and that shoulder throw at the end makes no sense.

  • it totally makes sense. there are many throws and grappling techniques in shotokan. what doesn't make sense about it??

  • @rausterer

I specifically mentioned what does not make sense imho. Try to read before commenting.

  • @rausterer Does this look like working throws and grappling to you?

  • nice gym

  • love the end matrix style haha

  • Bunkai is not a translation. Trying to translate a kata is the wrong way of thinking. Personally I do not like the wassa or the principle he is using. First off the kicks are high...must protect the babies. second there are a lot of hidden wipes and strikes in this kata that most people don't train, although when done at full speed they are hard to tell they are even in the kata.

  • OSU! Solid bunkai. For those that are not clear of what a bunkai is, it is an individual's interpretation of the kata. One can add but should not take away from its basic or core form during its application. All katas have a base or "original" bunkai IF taught by their instructors, however it should be the interpritation of the individual itself.

  • the kata is not far fetched, this "display" is. try any of these bunkai in a real situation or with a non pre programmed adversary and you will be toast. this type of nonsense is what has given shotokan a bad name for self defence!!

  • @Legolasthefirst1 Try use yourself in real situation, bunkai is simple and use concept of kata very well, I dislike kaiten part and ushiro cuki part, but rest is very simple and proper. Guys showed lot of variations with fumikomi part, I am very curious what bunkai You consider as better to sandan ? It's simple to criticise when You don't have better solution. Guys finish enemy in every combination and don't do acrobatic stuff from WKF so what's Your problem with this bunkai ?

  • @Legolasthefirst1 what may be toast is just your brains, since this bunkai display is slow motioned to aid the learning audience. As well as aikido, in a 'real situation', the more probable outcome is that the oponent won't even know what has happened, til he's layed on the ground or dead. That's because karate in general, and shotokan in particular, is based on speed, precision, and control. None of them are in self defense philosophy, if any. And that's for the 8 thumbsup as well.

  • @X3zi The speed of this display is irrelevant. If this bunkai is for demonstartion purposes to help remember the Kata form, in the way it might be taught to children then I see your point, However straight off this is wrong, in the opening move he steps into backstance with his right foot, it should be the left that moves. Form and function are too entirely different things blocking and punching while the opposite empty hand comes to rest on the hip is form not function.Try it sometime for real!

  • @Legolasthefirst1 Well, if the bunkai has to be exactly the same form of kata, I really don't know. If it could be different, I believe you're right in prioritizing the function, which I allign with too. On the other hand, if bunkai needs to match the kata moves, then the sequence appears to be ok to me.

  • I think parts of this kata are far-fetched, like that shoulder through at the end. I can´t believe that was the original meaning.

  • since when was that apart of this Kata?

  • 2550 - The outside crescent kick is to disarm, block, or strike...would i use it to block with, probably not. seeing innovative bunki helps spur the imagination of others into using their own ideas for a bunkai as there is no 'set' bunkai for any one kata.

  • sure... at 0:57 probably u r going to block a direct punch with your foot... what else?

  • @25500 If you are 170 cm 60-70 kg guy and a 190 cm 140 kg guy wants tu power punch you how will you stop his punch ? One way is using your foot, of course these techniques can't work against everyone but it can work, I used similar technique to stop kicks and in the end the goy fighting me hat swollen feet for 2-3 days and I din't have as much as a broise.

  • If you are altering the Karate-do Kata Bunkai for merely entertainment purposes then my comment doesn't really apply, but if you were attempting to alter the Kata Bunkai for the sake of making them "practical" then you should very much rethink your last technique.

It seems that the one doing the "fireman's carry" is deliberately putting himself into a crucifix...

  • Very nice. Love your dojo!

  • u should show some real acion wit like some gear on and go all out wit someone that would be completely awesome no joke cuz u pretty good i took karate for about 3 and a half years and i got to 1 degree black belt so it would be nice to see someone else fighting for a change

  • No they didn't pull out the Matrix move LOL

  • all of your videos are awesome

  • good show ;-)
