  • I give him credit for confessing to Oprah about his exaggerations. Oprah should at least admit to being a prostitute.

  • simply put, an incredibly smart man in an incredible horrible situation

  • pissing of oprah apparently = pissing off god. Not the same thing,he's an addict, and it's great that he even let her eyes touch on TRYING to see what he went through.

  • The book was fantastic. Living in a world where dishonesty for personal gain is accepted isn't so fantastic.

  • I read the first 60 pages on the first day, this book is awesome.

  • James Frey, you are straight up awesome. :)

  • Fuck Oprah. She made all this drama.

  • so he lied...thats kinds obvious no one members detox that vividly. or treatment for that matter, nothing really happens no one would have read the real story

  • bright shiny morning was great as was a million little pieces and my friend leonard.

  • listen, if the book helps people through their problems, why get so upset? He's a writer, so what if he "lied"? It's a work of fiction. Just because Oprah is dumb enough to believe everything she reads doesn't mean people should get into a big stink about it. Does Oprah dictate your lives? God you people are f.uckin' dumb. It's like that South Park episode where Randy joins AA. Just because the miracle isn't true, doesn't mean it didn't help you through tough times.

  • EXACTLY. I read the book before all the controversy, I watched that Oprah show and I didn't care one bit. I thought she was totally off her rocker creating such drama and dictating once again the morals, principals and spirituality of life!! And yes !! people do blindly follow her every word. OY VEY. Tis sad.

I really like his style of writing and especially LUV his attitude. Check out his interview on QTV.

  • Get over it... LOOSERS!

  • I especially loved Stephen King's quote regarding James Frey: "He's an addict and all addicts lie."

  • a million little lessons.

  • If it's a work of fiction, call it that, not a memoir. And if you're going to lie, don't make it so obvious.

  • I read a million little pieces

and watched Oprah rake him over the coals and she had ever right to because i believed what was in the book.

Then, I thought of the addicts I have met and the lies they have told and realized.

  • Do you realize how many other authors have wrote memoires and stretched the truth?

  • If you read AMLP and had no idea that at least part of it was invented, life must be very hard for you.

  • im 13 and i say a million littlle pices is a great book

  • Yes he was a drug addict, that part of the book was very true.

  • He supposedly lied to her about the events in the book being true. But not every book is true books are supposed to make the readers see things in a whole different perspective and that book did so it doesn't really matter if its not entirely true. He was an addict though.

  • was he really an addict

  • memoirs are retelling from memory and emotions while an autobiography must all be fact in chronological order so no, it's not an untrue memoir.

  • I read "A million little pieces" and the second one.. I loved both books no matter how much of either were true! :) Both very good for anyone who has ever had drug problems... Go James!

  • I'm finally reading A Million Little Pieces right now after a friend lent me the book. I'm approaching it as a work of fiction and nothing more. Who cares if it's accurate or not if it's well written and entertaining that's really all that matters.

  • hell yeah. ppl pay attention to the un important bullshit. like i dont care if the dude jacks off every day to freddy cruger. aslong as his book makes me glad to be reading it. im fucking good.

  • i really like this book!!! is awesome... both my parents used to be addicts and now they're not this book has helped me see how hard is to get sober..... i don't care what opera thinks... so what he lied to her? she is just another human bein is not like he lied to God...!!!

  • i really like this book!!! is awesome... both my parents used to be addicts and now they're not this book has helped me see how hard is to get sober..... i don't care what operah thinks... so what he lied to her? she is just another human bein is not like he lied to God...!!!

  • whatd he lie to her about

  • bright shiny morning had a hhorrible ending

  • James Frey is such an incredible author. I adore his books. George had some great points on the "controversy", a "memoir" does not equal pure facts, there's always so much changed and added. Good interview, James seems like a good guy.

  • As in the entire thing was completely full of shit? Yeah good guys write phony memoirs (smoking gun pwn't his sorry ass).

Isn't a memoir supposed to be a recollection of events or the life of the author as factual and not "made up horseshit"?

  • I have to admit Im slightly dissapointed, I began develop a crush on the character....now that he doesn't exist kind of sucks. But overall, amazing book...people are just upset because the once inspirational truth is no longer truth.

Thats why it's important to read books because you enjoy literature, not because you're looking for help from a book.

  • James Frey is hott

  • I enjoyed this interview

  • bright shiny morning and a million little pieces are two of the best books ive ever read. im outraged that people are so mad about some of amlp being fiction. its a GREAT book. i could care less if its lies. he never looked me in the face and said "i promise you what youre about to read is my experience in complete honesty" this guy is right. a lot of memoirs are bullshit. get OVER it.

  • you all also have to recognize that if he was as drugged up as he said, he wouldn't have remembered day to day, second to second. especially that in depth. now, his book was truly inspirational, and he nails the details. and yes i agree with all of you that he shouldn't be called a fraud.

  • I don't see what's the big deal. It was one of the best books I have ever read. Who cares if it was fact or fiction, it was a great book. "HE LIED TO OPERA". Ok whatever, who hasn't lied. Although I am slightly disappointed, It really does not matter to me.

  • I think the book was interesting had It been real, but you can kind of get that it is a work of fiction after a few pages..The thing was it was marketed as a biography....I

  • anyone who says this man is a fraud is stupid. NO memoir is 100% true, nothing that ANYONE says about themselves is 100% true. what matters is that the important things in the book are true, about a man struggling with addiction and his time in rehab. does it really matter that not every single thing he wrote is exactly true? because it's impossible; memory is never exactly true, it's how we remember it and the rest is what we assume happened.

  • I remember starting reading little Pieces and it opens with him getting on a plane all bloodied up and I was like - do you expect me to believe that?

  • I really don't get what the whole fuss is about. True or not, it was still a great book.

  • thank you!

    finally,someone with common sense.

  • Has he every said what was true or false in the book, or why the book was marketed as a memoir when it's not?

    Great author, regardless

  • Does anyone have the link of the Oprah interview with James Frey? I'm re-reading A Million Little Pieces (just read the dentist scene!!) and would love to see the interview again

  • Plain and Simple He's a Fraud

  • i agree entirely

  • i feel the same way about this book that i do about ghost hunters: if it's not real, it's good enough to make me, the audience, think it's real. and i started reading the book for that purpose. so i think that james frey did a damn good job. and also ghost hunters :)

  • James Frey is great. It's wonderful and so refreshing to see a person getting up and confronting reality rather than escaping or even killing himself.

  • Is there a video of Oprah's interview with James? I can't find it on youtube

  • im looking for the one where she rips on him.

  • FUCK YOU OPRAH

  • Oprah had every right to descecrate him on air since there were inaccuracies. I thought what I read from him was real.

I guess anything can be justified....

  • Thats not how i pictured him

sounding, in the book i thought

he was going to be all "huu"

    if that makes since, ha.

  • no one defends his public fucking speaking because he isnt a fucking public speaker. he is a fucking writer.

true, embelished, lie, whatever it is. its a book, its a good book none the less!

    to: ZeBrTy

  • james frey is amazing, he is an author, he is true, he knows who he is. He made millions of people give up drugs and booze, and that right there is much more then anyone else could do.

  • ya "millions", give me a break

  • seriously, A Million Little Pieces was amazing, fuck the media, fuck oprahs book club shit, the book changed my view and way of thinking and him changin things only did great things, look how many people are even alive or even sober right now because he did it, so whatever, i can't wait to read My Friend Leanord and every other book he has and ever will have written. Team JamesFrey ( :

  • I read the book before all this BS and loved it....who friggin cares if it was true or not? He made it very true, and I believed it. That's what writers do, just like artists make their paintings real. It's a skill that he has mastered and I love it.

  • I could write a completely true story better than Frey, but I am not a writer and honestly would not enjoy that process very much...Either way the book was decent and true to the lives of many drug addicts, but it was not James' story, and for that I can not respect him

  • Are you saying you're a drug addict who cant write? Have you tried sports? Badminton's nice.

  • hahahaha....im looking into a curling league right now...but yes...i am an ex junkie that can write but does not want or like to...maybe if i go to jail again i can get started...but for the time being, i am chillin

  • To me it seems like he was a drug addict and all that, but sort of exaggerated some of the details and made up some of them. I don't really see it as a problem and the fact that he altered some of the details, that's just what you do in order to protect peoples identities.

  • He did not alter some of the details. He portrayed himself as a hard-core criminal w/ considerable jail time wanted in 3 states. He lied & got caught. He's a terrible writer & worse public speaker.

  • hey may have embellished the facts...but one thing....james frey is a phenomenal writer.....

  • He embraces every cliche' in the ever written. He overuses 'and.' He is a horrible, laughably bad writer. Then he portrays himself like the ultimate badass & when you see him, he's this lisping soft-shoulder sissy with a voice that hurts my ears to listen. Also, check out a lesser-known writer named Eddie Little. There's been serious allegations that he stole from the lesser-known writer. I like the fact you defend his writing but not his public speaking.

  • Goddamn this is the worst most softball interview I've ever seen. James Frey takes absolutely no responsibility for what he did and keeps saying in the passive voice that "it happened to him". Bullshit. He did it, he lied, and he should take responsibility.

  • i don't get what the big deal is.. if i had to write about my life, i'd alter some things to make it more interesting..

  • lol me too

  • yeah seriously, fabrication aside, his writing, things he said, theories, and thoughts on everything in life in general was just so good.

  • a million little pieces was amazingly disturbing. it was beautifully written and it tastfully forced you to recognize how extreme hardcore drug usage is. even if you've never done drugs, you can't deny that it changed your outlook on a lot of different things. one of my favorites.

  • im reading a million little pieces...and i dont care that is not completly true..his writting is amazing!

  • Thats not the point, he lied and said it was true. I heard the book went on sale after Oprah found out.

  • i know, but i still dont care, like i dont read it for the fact he said it was true, i read it for the fact that its a novel

  • so I'm part way through the book and without giving anything away, can someone explain to me as how "true" this story is? I've heard that he completely mad it up and I've heard that he altered many small details and everything inbetween, now I haven't finished the bok and am enjoying it regardless so please try not give anything away

  • It's semi-fictional. It's an exaggeration of his life -- basically.

  • He did not exaggerate. He lied.

  • CBC tv, i disagree. i think that clearly james frey hasnt learnt a single "lesson" from that whole million little pieces controversy. he explains in the video that he approached his new book with the same thoughts as he did with MLP. He also has no regrets for how he wrote and presented a million little pieces

  • Man opera says it aint true...even if frey say it aint true it still gots sum meanin to it man...sumone cant make shit up like that...this book as inspired me n my dad is fucked up almost the same way james was and it opens my eyes...shows me shit...yeah my dad is 50 but it makes me understand sum shitt...so fuck opera...true er not it means sumin so frey ur dope homie...keep on keepin on

  • People forget that the best works of fiction are always based in reality, no matter how fantastical. Take Harry Potter for example, it was influenced by the tragedy that JK Rowling had in her life.

  • you know what, i began to read his first book n i teared up man, n now i found out his book wasnt real, but fuck it. that book was beast n real, n how detailed dat book was isjust absurd. Great book.

  • FUCK OPRAH!! THIS IS A GREAT ASS BOOK!!

  • One of my fave authors!

  • jeeezz! it's a greatt book, he's a writer and he can do whatever he wants to with his ideas and a paper!

great job! and a great writter!!

  • word, vanilla0r

  • Fuckin ace author man & fuck the cynics :-)

  • A Million Little Pieces is a great read. I like James Frey and his style and I will buy his next book.

  • me too

  • Augusten Burroughs and Mitch Albom are the most outstanding as far as memoirists go.

  • I don't know why people believed in the first place that Frey, or JT Leroy, were ever being authentic. Tacky, forced, gallery-of-suffering emotional button-pushing with really clumsy and inaccurate language, especially when "raging." I guess it's DANGEROUS LITERATURE for most cornballs. And Strombo is the X-Games of journalism.

  • Oprah called Frey out for a GOOD reason. The next book she was promoting (after his) was Night, by Elie Wiesel, which is a TRUE memoir about the Holocaust, and Wiesel's survival of a Nazi concentration camp. Since Frey's memoir contained untrue details, people could then easily argue that Night, also a memoir, may contain embellishments or untrue details, as well. And there are people out there who would LOVE to dispute true facts about the Holocaust.

  • Actually, Wiesel's book has "facts" in it that have been proven to be inaccurate. I'm pretty sure his book has more "untrue details" in it than Frey's does. I'm also pretty sure that it's more offensive to make shit up about something as extreme and already brutal enough as the holocaust than to make shit up about Rehab.

But you keep talking out of your ass about things you obviously don't know shit about.

  • What? Which details are untrue? I was really disturbed by that book though merely because of the history.

  • Oprah only turned on him because she was afraid to loose her viewers, she didnt care if the story was entirely true or not , what she cares more about are the opinions of the viewers that build her empire. On lary King she was very self-righteous in thinking that her viewers were going to agree with her in supporting James Frey, but when they didn't she whent on a tirade against Oprah. It just came of as disingenuous on her part.

  • She did it because she doesn't like being lied to. A Million Little Pieces is a great book regardless.

  • If so why did she called in on the Lary king show to support him, and only after her fans turned against her she had a change of heart.

  • They should put the intro on.
