The discussion is on whether or not the CO2 we release is causing a blanketing effect over the Earth which traps a very minute amount of the sun's energy here on Earth. This minute amount, albeit relatively small when considering the already present amount of naturally occurring CO2, may be responsible for a small increase in the planetary average temperature overtime. The observed warming is simply NATURAL VARIATION in Earth climate. If you look back through history(yes that would require you to open a BOOK) you would realize that Earth temperature, along with other parameters, have waxed and waned throughout geological history. The real question is as follows:

No natural phenomenon can explain the recent warming, in fact if you take the natural effects only - they predict a slight cooling trend over that time.
