There have been two OUTSTANDING exponents of Olin Blitch: Norman Treigle and Samuel Ramey. Thank you for posting this wonderful example of Ramey's way with this role, especially with the best ever conductor of the opera, Julius Rudel, conducting.
Saw him in Susannah at Lyric of Chicago and it was the best performance of this opera I have heard/seen -- He and Fleming were absolutely riveting -- you became lost in the performance and forget it was an opera. I like Ramey best -- he's from the south, so it sounds realistic. This seems to have been written for him and his acting talents. Note how he bends the notes.
Sam Ramey is indeed one of the voices of the century, but he is not from the South. He is a Midwesterner, a native of the state of Kansas. However, he does a good southern preacher accent in the inflections of speach and use of dipthongs.
I stand corrected -- in the back of my mind I knew that. He is an honorary member of my professional fraternity & lives in Chicago now.. we've spoken on several occasions. He's on the Northwestern faculty [my alma mater] Once spoke with him just down the street from La Scala a few weeks after seeing him in "Faust" at Lyric - had just seen him in La Scala's production. We chatted for a few minutes. The tech aspects of the La Scala production were better. He's Boris at SF Opera this year.
I saw him sing this at the Lyric...gave me chills

He's just so wonderful in this role. He might actually have made a good revival preacher! :-)

I had to speak at some conference in LA. I took my wife who went to see Susannah instead of listening to me. Smart girl.
She was blown away by this new guy - Sam Ramey.

@Agorante What year was this? I didn't know he had sung this role in L.A. I know he sang it in San Diego in 1981.

Best basso of my generation. Saw him on the same role at the Met years ago with the late Jerry Hadley and Renee Fleming. Top Ten performance.

I love Ramey's interpretation. Can this aria be done better?
