  • He's just so wonderful in this role. He might actually have made a good revival preacher! :-)

  • I had to speak at some conference in LA. I took my wife who went to see Susannah instead of listening to me. Smart girl.

She was blown away by this new guy - Sam Ramey.

  • @Agorante What year was this? I didn't know he had sung this role in L.A. I know he sang it in San Diego in 1981.

  • @arpeggio1358 Please accept my apology's for the juvenile delinquents on my page, (now deleted) also thank you for your most kind letter!

  • @cathytreks All is well. Thank you again for the Lena Horne video!

  • @arpeggio1358

Beats me. I can remember the wife (some) but not much more.

  • @Agorante LOL!

  • sam ramey is a god in this role!!! Bravo

  • Great hair!

  • huh, didn't know that juan diego florez played the cello ^^

1:25 down in the right corner

  • Fabulous! I wonder if he studied Billy Sunday (see especially the move at 4:43) ... Thanks so much for posting!

  • Best basso of my generation. Saw him on the same role at the Met years ago with the late Jerry Hadley and Renee Fleming. Top Ten performance.

  • I love Ramey's interpretation. Can this aria be done better?

  • Haven't seen it yet...The role either. Ramey is the best on this, hands down.

  • NO, that was perfect. It gave me amazing chills!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bravo!! What a dynamic stage presence!

  • I was there, it was even better in person.

  • Wow, I am envious.

  • Estoy seriamente impresionado!

seriamente lo digo pero esto fue IMPONENTE.

    Bravíssimo Maestro Ramey.

  • I go to Indiana University and am voice major. We're performing this and it's amazing to see Sam Ramey singing it. Hah. Very cool. Thank you!

  • Does anyone know when this was recorded?

  • There is more to this scene....could you please post the ending? it seems incomplete without it.

  • There have been two OUTSTANDING exponents of Olin Blitch: Norman Treigle and Samuel Ramey. Thank you for posting this wonderful example of Ramey's way with this role, especially with the best ever conductor of the opera, Julius Rudel, conducting.

  • Oh, yes! Julius Rudel! Wonderful!

  • Saw him in Susannah at Lyric of Chicago and it was the best performance of this opera I have heard/seen -- He and Fleming were absolutely riveting -- you became lost in the performance and forget it was an opera. I like Ramey best -- he's from the south, so it sounds realistic. This seems to have been written for him and his acting talents. Note how he bends the notes.

  • Sam Ramey is indeed one of the voices of the century, but he is not from the South. He is a Midwesterner, a native of the state of Kansas. However, he does a good southern preacher accent in the inflections of speach and use of dipthongs.

  • I stand corrected -- in the back of my mind I knew that. He is an honorary member of my professional fraternity & lives in Chicago now.. we've spoken on several occasions. He's on the Northwestern faculty [my alma mater] Once spoke with him just down the street from La Scala a few weeks after seeing him in "Faust" at Lyric - had just seen him in La Scala's production. We chatted for a few minutes. The tech aspects of the La Scala production were better. He's Boris at SF Opera this year.

  • sam ramey is from Kansas

  • Thank you for the video.cp

  • Thanks so much for this ! I need to see this opera ! It must be great !!!

  • a great bass. keep up the good work. regards,
