I never saw Bagpuss as a child. I first saw it at the age of 21 - an adult watching a children's show, with no nostalgia from my own childhood. I still thought it was awesome! Just goes to show that, well, Bagpuss is awesome!
@LolitaLollyLips your lucky I only have Bagpuss & the clangers series 1, still looking to get Ivor the engine, Clangers Series 2 and the rest of the work of Oliver Postgate :(
sigh - wish they were repeart on TV :( thank god for youtube :)
... so this is a shop that dosent sell anything, and a little girl lives there with her toys.. if im wrong please correct me but... is that not a house
After many years of trying to uncover the secret of bagpuss mouse language...I can finally reveal what they were saying in this song...
Squeak, squeak, squeak
Squeak, squeak, squeak
Squeak, squeak, squeak
Unfortunately when I went to interview the mice I had restricted access due to biscuit fraud, which is 5 years solitary imprisonment. As mice live far shorter lives than 5 years I was unable to conduct the interview I wanted to due to the fact that none were alive any longer.
See, Oliver Postgate could have told us something about re-using and recycling today - never throw anything away if it can be washed or mended. Oliver Postgate, eco-warrior!
nowadays Bagpuss would be killed off in focus groups. Same goes for all Oliver Postgates fabulous little films. He never ever talked down to children. A genius.
I don't know if I ever watches Bagpuss as a child. I heard this song, on some show on tv about the 100 greatest kids tv shows or something, for the first time a few weeks ago. I don't know why but it really struck a cord with me and I've listened to it nearly everday since. It's just such a wonderful melody.
brilliant....what was the song about fixing it with glue?
i love bagpuss - bagpuss is the new dylan, velvets and cohen...are you american? i hope so - cos i like the thought of english genius appreciated around the liberal world....
YES! We love the mice and poor Professor YAffle - always derided by spinster for sure Madeleine and that frog who really thought he was something special - all because he played a banjo.
for the old and miserable at heart who diss this clip....shame on you. I LOVE IT!

well the tune they're singing is a medveil tune called "summer is i coming in loudy sing cuckoo cuckoo" and yes it's a round song for 4 voices.
FinalFreek 2 years ago 2
I believe it was called the Sumer Canon...
"Sumer is Icumin in..."
It actually was the earliest discovered written piece of music that included the word "fart," or "uerteþ" in middle English.
