As a teacher I would suggest starting to work on sounds rather than whole words... recognising phonetics means that a child is then able to decode unfamiliar words. E.G: ch_i_m_p knowing the 4 phonetic sounds is more useful than knowing the actual word because they can use this information with other words (e.g. chat, limp, match). It is wonderful to see a mother working with her child before school though! It makes a huge difference.
