  • Watts is my Homie.

  • How does he do this - so amazing - I'm breathless......

  • Fantastico concerto. Mendelsshon è il più sottovalutato dei compositori assolutamente al pari di Mozart, Bach o Beethoven!

  • What a different sound from the russian and asian virtuosi!

  • @ThePaulinoContreras

These works always need to be interpreted passiontately not mechanically. Musicians who "feel" the music, offer their own version with emotion, rather than the robots (whilst great technically) who don't contribute their own feelings. JIMO.

  • love the way he mouths the melody!!

  • @ballisticman2

As a pianist myself, I was shocked when videoed how I made strange faces. and was open mouthed often. It was something I thought pretentious or theatre. Truth is, when playing these more difficult works, it's actually quite physical as well as emotional, hence gasps for breath and some odd faces in an expressive segment..

That said, it can be cute too.

  • The orchestra's dresscode is just ridiculous! Great playing though

  • amazing!

  • I play the clarinet part on this.. its great.. soooooo many rests.. :p

  • he's not reading music either

  • He is so animated! Awesome.

  • absolutely adore this recording. this concerto reminds me of a mixture of beethoven and chopin

  • Sounds Mozart Influenced at some parts ;)

  • I found out about Andre Watts after watching a good rerun of Mr Rogers believe it or not.

  • mendelssohn pudo ser aun mejor que beethoven, el caso fue que tuvo una vida mas simple que el.

  • the 9 people that dislike this video also liked baby by justin bieber

  • @gabson12 I like Justin Bieber. I listen to classical all the time but if Justin Bieber happened to be on the radio I wouldn't hate it or anything. Jus' sayin'.

  • WHERE THE BLUE BLODDY FUCK IS THE REST?!?!!?

  • increadible

  • Phyoomz! Awesome. No one messes with Watts. He gets paid hundreds of thousands for merely showing up. He probably cancelled because of a sub-grade piano and kept his appearance fees LOL. He is the only real American prodigy in the history of music as far I'm aware. He and Van Cliburn.

  • @priceeqn You forgot John Williams, Itzahk Perlman and Yo Yo Ma...

  • I wonder how much Mendelssohn usually got when he was showing up. What a twisted world.

  • Lol. Wasn't he in Tropic Thunder? But on a serious note, I just read about this guy in one of my law classes. He tried to jip a booking company out of its fees/commissions.

  • Rudolf Serkin was tops in this piece.

  • André Watts feels every measure, every note when he performs. The coordination between him and John Williams is just about perfect. Watt's affectations make him very effective. I've always found Mendelssohn"s music to lure me into a peaceful albeit melancholy phase. These 2 apparently conflicing emotions are what makes music like Mendelssonh's so effective in pinning our emotions AGAINST each other and strangely, rendering them compatible WITH each other. The performers aid & abet the composer.

  • I am 12 and ı play this piece for a competition.İts so nice =) And this piano is awesome.=)

  • @Piyanistcan5 and no one gives a fuck....

  • sooo sick

  • @brandonkerry11 - I assume you're joking, right? Or you're insane. Mendelssohn died in 1847.

  • I think he plays it well, but his presentation of the second theme is very mannered. When i was very young, I heard Mendelssohn himself play this, and i was in the company of Moscheles and Spohr. I would have to say that Mendelssohn played this a little better, but of course, he wrote it.

  • This guy makes the piano his bitch

  • Wonderful orchestra.

    Wonderful conductor !

I wish I could see more videos with John Williams who conducts.

  • It good to listern the 3rd part right after the 1st part!...

  • Damn, what Watts does in the transition to the recapitulation is sooo cool!

  • I really dislike his mouth action. It distracts from the music and takes away from the performance. It's like tapping your foot in baroque/classical/romantic/early twentieth century music. You just don't do it.

The playing itself though, is quite extrordinary.

  • @genmaestro1 And that is exactly the problem with people who want to hear with their eyes.....you wouldn't have even noticed his "mouth action" if you were using the only sense, that makes sense....

    Close your eyes next time.

  • ahhh, classical is so calming. i'm right now looking for inspiration to compose myself. so i thought i'd turn to something like this

  • @iluvKH4eva well that i think is where you are wrong sorry but classical radio always have ads saying calming classics etc, but the whole scope of classic music brings me every type of emotion not just hackneyed performances of moonlight sonata first movement etc, they almost say you have to be a geriatric to enjoy it!

  • perfect! i love this pianoconcert!

  • Whoo, made it to 4:55 in the piece in 2-3 weeks without lessons and my teacher and my teacher goes, " Oh just sight read through the rest that should be easy right? " It's too bad that the arpegios have to change keys every stinkin time. Do you think that is slow progress? be ohnest. I only had 2-3 hours to practice a couple of weeks, but the cromatics when you first start learning are different and difficult for your brain. It's weird because I can't determine if it's very difficult or not.

  • @pianosfun I know the feeling... Damn those arpeggios!! .... Practice Chopin's 0ß 10#1 and 0p 25#12 and then the arpeggios will feel easy.. !

  • Is he chewing gum?

  • @hilocomtoot he is singing

  • @linceed87 Still think he's chewing gum b/c the motion is not with the melody to be singing, probably Double Mint or Juicy Fruit. Wonder where he's sticking it when finished under the piano's keyboard. Whatever it is it damn sure is good! I'll ask him when he comes to Austin this fall.

  • @hilocomtoot god....

  • @hilocomtoot LMFAOOO

  • @trueviolinist When he's here 9/25 in Austin playing the Beethoven 4th I'll present him ,in the green room, a mixed 10 pack of Juicy Fruit /Double Mint. Also, will check under the keyboard for fresh stuck gum, he's got to be sneaking it under there somehow and reloading. if I find fresh gum will keep half and place the other on eBay. That's a good $1000!!! Of course photos will be taken. Hey, what the hell is LMFAOOO, a foreign gum? That might be his brand! Must be good the way he's chewing!

  • I'm pretty sure his mouth's moving cuz he's a tad crazy

  • Im pretty sure his mouths moving cuz hes counting the beat

  • i wish he would stop moving him mouth.. it makes him look a tad crazy...

  • 1:08 the guy in the back looks like Uncle Vernon :)

  • this guy came to my town and played :0

  • I love everything in this piece, besides the very end. What is that? Instead continuing the energy let's give it all away to a couple notes played by a trumpet! Anyway, Andre Watts really knows how to get expression out in "both" hands. This will be the first concerto I'll learn, and even I, who likes to play only big pieces, am nervous.

  • @pianosfun All three movements of this piece are sort of joined together, making one big concerto. The trumpet notes were the lead in to the 2nd movement. Also, part of the ending to the first movement was cut off. Anyways, listen to the entire piece, and it will make more sense.

  • wonderful music, wonderful performance.

  • wow

  • Can somebody load the 3rd part of this concert by Andre Watts, please?

  • what is he chewing at?

  • @mees04101993 I've seen him in concert - he's a bit of a talker.

  • andre watts always seem to faze me ... simply amazing, simply in love.

  • Whoa!!!! Talk about "tickling the ivory" :-+). i haven't listened to any of Andre Watts' performances for many years now, but i'm VERY glad that i stumbled across this one.... YouTube is a wonderful resource for people who love good music but don't have the time or money to put together a good library of their own. So many people are ready willing and able to share their recordings with the world - it is heart-warming!!

  • I wish i played piano............Andre Watts makes this look and sound like sooooooooo much fun!!!! *stuck with a flute for now*

  • When can I found the next part !! please let me know

  • I love Andre Watts. I've seen him LIVE many times, and he is just awesome! I also watched him rehearse Beethoven's Emperor.

  • Mendelssohn was a genius, no doubt about it.

  • there are millions...or billions of compositions made. no one is going to know what you're talking about...

and i'm only one minute in but this orchestra AND pianist have sooo much energy!!! i love it!

  • Although I'm not sure...but perhaps you're referring to "Fur Elise" by Beethoven.

  • If I had to guess I'd say it was "Clair De Lune" by Claude Debussy.

  • @everythingistken1291

    sorry but totally different ;)

  • Everytime I watch this video. It always feels like I got my Xmas present early.

Wonderful piece, played by my favorite pianist.

    Andre Watts

  • I rather straight performance, nothing particularly spectacular in Watts nor Williams' interpretation of this beast, but it is pleasant b/c all the right pieces are there

  • voglio diventare così...ci riuscirò??:(

  • I can only dream of playing this as free from tension as he can!

  • Songs or pieces what a stupid discussion

  • all i have to freaking do is play the goddamned thing for a recital jesus christ why do u all have to care so much

  • lol thx yg

  • does anyone know where to get the other movements?

anyone knows if Watts has recorded this concerto on CD?

  • Anyone who calls classical themes as "songs" is ignorant.

  • However, despite cilias being politically correct, we know what you mean when you say song. I've been correcting people for a while, and just didn't bother anymore since we all knew what they were talking about.

  • another good thing about classical music is that even when you see an orchestra playing is beautiful!the violins playing all together etc...ofc this doesn't even touch the perfection of the music but i thought to mention it

  • I might believe you if you didn't just call it a SONG

  • er piece sorry critic

  • I'm sorry, I just get really compulsive about these things...

  • videofreakmanic123, you don't owe any of these snob freaks any apology; especially that ciliaspippi moron have a seizure over a word, and it wasn't even profanity! lol You are too kind.

  • yo thanks i no this guy is like some kinda whackjob

  • YGYG...: Just so you know, Songs are song, pieces are played. The Songs without words are a group of piano pieces, not songs. When a composer writes songs, he will most likely label the opus Songs. If a composer writes pieces, he may label them pieces, but not songs. Songs without words is a way of saying that the pieces are very lyrical, however they are still pieces.

  • YG x10, would you kindly stop slandering me for using the correct term? I really do not understand what your argument is, seeing as strictly speaking I was correct in my usage of the term, and you simply showed you DO use the wrong term, just that you didn't care for the fact that you are using the wrong word.

  • many idiots call SONGS all classic masterpieces...

  • I don't think it's exclusive to classical music. I think it's this habit with modern music where everything is a song in Pop, Rock etc. On the iPod, they say it can hold 360 SONGS. And they don't realise that not only are not all of those songs, but most classical music lovers like to discern between them. That's why I got pissed off at the guy that called this piece a song

  • Simply, they r not songs! I d never call them like that.

  • cciliaspippi, well no one gives a crap that you are "pissed" off because someone didn't know to call this a "PIECE." You are such a nasty, SNOB to insult someone just because they weren't aware of that trivial matter on a YouTube clip. You sound like a mean-spirited moron. There are ways to correct someone with insulting them. See how it feels?

  • .... what are you trying to prove? I did not insult him. I simply stated the fact that I might have believed he had played this, let's face it, quite difficult PIECE if he had shown more of a knowledge of the style by naming it correctly. In my position, where I am surrounded by contemporary AND historical music generally the players of historic show more attention to details like not calling a piece that isn't sung a song therefore him playing a romantic piece is more believeable if he shows it

  • Dont waste your time on him...I highly doubt he knows whereof he speaks

  • TK2008BEST, never heard of the classical "piece" A SONG WITHOUT WORDS, snob?

  • What does this mean, bobo?

Whats "snoob"? r u trying to describe yourself?

  • ....... Grieg's lyric PIECES are a group of piano pieces that are to be "sung" with you fingers. But they are still lyric PIECES. Mendelssohn's songs without words are just another pretty name like Grieg's lyric pieces. It's not A song without words, since there's a lot of them. but even labled as songs without words, they are not sung with a voice and still categorized as piano PIECES

  • His hands are enormous.

  • I dunno the actual fingers look pretty small to me but I think the thing is that he has a pretty phenomenal strech. =-D

  • Written by the Great 21 year old Mendelssohn , the famous Jewish composer.

    The Best composer ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yo toko el piano y es mui bueno lo mejor de la clasica

  • he's half black and half german actually

  • not German but Hungarian !!

And he can play the piano. Have you heard his Brahms second with Bernstein?

  • i actually saw him in concert in bloomington, indiana...he played brahms 1st and 2nd concertos. one thing i saw that i'd never seen before, he brain-farted halfway through, stopped, and refered to the conductor's score...but it didn't take anything away from the performance...he's awesome!

  • lol

  • Love your insightful comment.

  • Ever heard of Thelonious Monk? John Hicks? Maybe Leon Bates?

Jeez, really what century are you from?

  • the opening theme is SOOO typical mendelsohnn! i could have said it's him without reading the title...an enchanting piece. well done Andre Watts and Boston Pops orchestra!

  • Brilliant

  • it's amazing!!!

  • check out the oboe player

    hahaha

  • I woud like to listen the therd part. Who has it?

  • how long does it take to have this ppiece in your head :D?

  • I saw him in concert and he played Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. I was able to talk to him, too :D Such a nice guy and a very talented individual...

  • I played this as second clarinet and OH MY GOD its amazing when the pianos so close to you and you can hear every amazing thing the guy's doing...

    it still amazes me.

    love it

  • omg mendellshon is the best composer ive ever heard

  • Briilliant.

  • My friend love this concerto and i too.

  • Why does he open and close his mouth to his piano playing?

  • Some people mouth the words they're seeing when they read something. This is the same. It's probably a habit developed from singing along with your own playing (Can help with certain rhythm/pitch problems ..)

  • omfg. amazing.

you have to admit though, there are parts that really look like he's having a seizure./tourettes.

:28, for example. lol. so awesome though. amazing. i stand in awe.

  • I think you just mistake touretts for passion

  • Couldn't have said it any better Tubztele

  • My God.. this is Amazing! I'm jelous, ^^ ;

Congratulations for him... he plays veeeeeeery well

  • He's a talker. But that was phenomenal, so I forgive him.

I saw him doing Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. That was quite good as well.

  • I love opera 23!! !!!

    Opera54

  • What year was this?

  • Magnificiente Bravo

  • John Williams is a good conductor, I like his style.

  • can someone tell me where are the other two movements of this concert? this boston pops' rendering of Mendhelson's piano concerto no 1 with andre watts is one of the best . however i cannot find the other two movements? any help?

  • I see the Influence of Bach Mozart and Beethoven in this concerto.

  • i love the way andre plays this.. this is HIS piece and always will be his trademark

  • I'm going to play this with orchestra soon too :) I love it!

  • Thanks! Is that "mr star wars" Williams?

  • Mendelssohn the greatest musical genius ever!

  • Man. Brings back memories of my sophomore year in high school. Had a visiting pianist, my orchestra played the accompaniment. (violaaaa)

I wish my college had an orchestra :c

  • I'm learning this for piano, any advice?

  • There is only ONE SINGLE way how to learn this:

On an academy of music and nowhere else!

Whish all the best to you.

    Martin /Chemnitz.

  • @libyaTVfriend

I respectfully have to disagree. The academy of music, conservatory levels, really all are a great show that forget music and focus on 'technique.'

academy of music... i guess that would help though :)

  • good luck !!!!!

    lol !!!

    i never made it........

  • im playing this at the moment (1st violin) soooo jealous of soloist. she makes it look so easy!so does this guy! i tried like the first bar and it was impossible!!!

  • Er, whoops, the Ab major. Sorry. The part at 2:50 is particularly brilliant, but unfortunately, Watts plays it like a scherzo, which I dislike.

  • I agree !!!

Serkin is way ahead in the interpretation !!!!

  • The Bb-major modulation in the middle is simply ethereal.

  • You sorta get higher video qaulity if you type down; &fmt18 . at the end of this videos url.

  • rhytmically and musically perfect. very good interpretation

  • NICE!

  • PLZ! upload this video In high-quality. I would love to view this performance in high-quality. Nothing interests me more in viewing this in a higher quality. If your going to do this to any video, please start with this one :).

  • This is one of my favorite concertos! It has such constant energy and 'fuco'! Mendelssohn is too often overlooked by pianists. He has some great repritore out there. His piano duets are amazing too! Thanks for this video!

  • Beautifull, thanks a lot for the vid.

  • I saw and heard him in a live performance; He is really amazing!

  • awsome thanks for the upload andre watts needs more videos out he's to good for mic alone.

  • thanks! its hard enough to find a recording of this piece, let alone a video. more andre watts!

  • Thanks
