These works always need to be interpreted passiontately not mechanically. Musicians who "feel" the music, offer their own version with emotion, rather than the robots (whilst great technically) who don't contribute their own feelings. JIMO.
As a pianist myself, I was shocked when videoed how I made strange faces. and was open mouthed often. It was something I thought pretentious or theatre. Truth is, when playing these more difficult works, it's actually quite physical as well as emotional, hence gasps for breath and some odd faces in an expressive segment..
@gabson12 I like Justin Bieber. I listen to classical all the time but if Justin Bieber happened to be on the radio I wouldn't hate it or anything. Jus' sayin'.
Phyoomz! Awesome. No one messes with Watts. He gets paid hundreds of thousands for merely showing up. He probably cancelled because of a sub-grade piano and kept his appearance fees LOL. He is the only real American prodigy in the history of music as far I'm aware. He and Van Cliburn.
Lol. Wasn't he in Tropic Thunder? But on a serious note, I just read about this guy in one of my law classes. He tried to jip a booking company out of its fees/commissions.
André Watts feels every measure, every note when he performs. The coordination between him and John Williams is just about perfect. Watt's affectations make him very effective. I've always found Mendelssohn"s music to lure me into a peaceful albeit melancholy phase. These 2 apparently conflicing emotions are what makes music like Mendelssonh's so effective in pinning our emotions AGAINST each other and strangely, rendering them compatible WITH each other. The performers aid & abet the composer.
I think he plays it well, but his presentation of the second theme is very mannered. When i was very young, I heard Mendelssohn himself play this, and i was in the company of Moscheles and Spohr. I would have to say that Mendelssohn played this a little better, but of course, he wrote it.
I really dislike his mouth action. It distracts from the music and takes away from the performance. It's like tapping your foot in baroque/classical/romantic/early twentieth century music. You just don't do it.
@genmaestro1 And that is exactly the problem with people who want to hear with their eyes.....you wouldn't have even noticed his "mouth action" if you were using the only sense, that makes sense....
@iluvKH4eva well that i think is where you are wrong sorry but classical radio always have ads saying calming classics etc, but the whole scope of classic music brings me every type of emotion not just hackneyed performances of moonlight sonata first movement etc, they almost say you have to be a geriatric to enjoy it!
Whoo, made it to 4:55 in the piece in 2-3 weeks without lessons and my teacher and my teacher goes, " Oh just sight read through the rest that should be easy right? " It's too bad that the arpegios have to change keys every stinkin time. Do you think that is slow progress? be ohnest. I only had 2-3 hours to practice a couple of weeks, but the cromatics when you first start learning are different and difficult for your brain. It's weird because I can't determine if it's very difficult or not.
@linceed87 Still think he's chewing gum b/c the motion is not with the melody to be singing, probably Double Mint or Juicy Fruit. Wonder where he's sticking it when finished under the piano's keyboard. Whatever it is it damn sure is good! I'll ask him when he comes to Austin this fall.
@trueviolinist When he's here 9/25 in Austin playing the Beethoven 4th I'll present him ,in the green room, a mixed 10 pack of Juicy Fruit /Double Mint. Also, will check under the keyboard for fresh stuck gum, he's got to be sneaking it under there somehow and reloading. if I find fresh gum will keep half and place the other on eBay. That's a good $1000!!! Of course photos will be taken. Hey, what the hell is LMFAOOO, a foreign gum? That might be his brand! Must be good the way he's chewing!
I love everything in this piece, besides the very end. What is that? Instead continuing the energy let's give it all away to a couple notes played by a trumpet! Anyway, Andre Watts really knows how to get expression out in "both" hands. This will be the first concerto I'll learn, and even I, who likes to play only big pieces, am nervous.
@pianosfun All three movements of this piece are sort of joined together, making one big concerto. The trumpet notes were the lead in to the 2nd movement. Also, part of the ending to the first movement was cut off. Anyways, listen to the entire piece, and it will make more sense.
Whoa!!!! Talk about "tickling the ivory" :-+). i haven't listened to any of Andre Watts' performances for many years now, but i'm VERY glad that i stumbled across this one.... YouTube is a wonderful resource for people who love good music but don't have the time or money to put together a good library of their own. So many people are ready willing and able to share their recordings with the world - it is heart-warming!!
I rather straight performance, nothing particularly spectacular in Watts nor Williams' interpretation of this beast, but it is pleasant b/c all the right pieces are there
However, despite cilias being politically correct, we know what you mean when you say song. I've been correcting people for a while, and just didn't bother anymore since we all knew what they were talking about.
another good thing about classical music is that even when you see an orchestra playing is beautiful!the violins playing all together etc...ofc this doesn't even touch the perfection of the music but i thought to mention it
videofreakmanic123, you don't owe any of these snob freaks any apology; especially that ciliaspippi moron have a seizure over a word, and it wasn't even profanity! lol You are too kind.
YGYG...: Just so you know, Songs are song, pieces are played. The Songs without words are a group of piano pieces, not songs. When a composer writes songs, he will most likely label the opus Songs. If a composer writes pieces, he may label them pieces, but not songs. Songs without words is a way of saying that the pieces are very lyrical, however they are still pieces.
YG x10, would you kindly stop slandering me for using the correct term? I really do not understand what your argument is, seeing as strictly speaking I was correct in my usage of the term, and you simply showed you DO use the wrong term, just that you didn't care for the fact that you are using the wrong word.
I don't think it's exclusive to classical music. I think it's this habit with modern music where everything is a song in Pop, Rock etc. On the iPod, they say it can hold 360 SONGS. And they don't realise that not only are not all of those songs, but most classical music lovers like to discern between them. That's why I got pissed off at the guy that called this piece a song
cciliaspippi, well no one gives a crap that you are "pissed" off because someone didn't know to call this a "PIECE." You are such a nasty, SNOB to insult someone just because they weren't aware of that trivial matter on a YouTube clip. You sound like a mean-spirited moron. There are ways to correct someone with insulting them. See how it feels?
.... what are you trying to prove? I did not insult him. I simply stated the fact that I might have believed he had played this, let's face it, quite difficult PIECE if he had shown more of a knowledge of the style by naming it correctly. In my position, where I am surrounded by contemporary AND historical music generally the players of historic show more attention to details like not calling a piece that isn't sung a song therefore him playing a romantic piece is more believeable if he shows it
....... Grieg's lyric PIECES are a group of piano pieces that are to be "sung" with you fingers. But they are still lyric PIECES. Mendelssohn's songs without words are just another pretty name like Grieg's lyric pieces. It's not A song without words, since there's a lot of them. but even labled as songs without words, they are not sung with a voice and still categorized as piano PIECES
i actually saw him in concert in bloomington, indiana...he played brahms 1st and 2nd concertos. one thing i saw that i'd never seen before, he brain-farted halfway through, stopped, and refered to the conductor's score...but it didn't take anything away from the performance...he's awesome!

I played this movement my senior year in high school. Do lots and lots of slow work, rest often and be sure to take care - it's very easy to injure yourself with this one, especially if you have small hands - I can reach a 9th on a good day. Don't practice for long periods of time and ice your arms after you practice to help reduce inflammation.
im playing this at the moment (1st violin) soooo jealous of soloist. she makes it look so easy!so does this guy! i tried like the first bar and it was impossible!!!
PLZ! upload this video In high-quality. I would love to view this performance in high-quality. Nothing interests me more in viewing this in a higher quality. If your going to do this to any video, please start with this one :).
This is one of my favorite concertos! It has such constant energy and 'fuco'! Mendelssohn is too often overlooked by pianists. He has some great repritore out there. His piano duets are amazing too! Thanks for this video!

Man. Brings back memories of my sophomore year in high school. Had a visiting pianist, my orchestra played the accompaniment. (violaaaa)
I wish my college had an orchestra :c

I'm learning this for piano, any advice?

There is only ONE SINGLE way how to learn this:
On an academy of music and nowhere else!
Whish all the best to you.
Martin /Chemnitz.

I respectfully have to disagree. The academy of music, conservatory levels, really all are a great show that forget music and focus on 'technique.'
academy of music... i guess that would help though :)

Er, whoops, the Ab major. Sorry. The part at 2:50 is particularly brilliant, but unfortunately, Watts plays it like a scherzo, which I dislike.

I agree !!!
Serkin is way ahead in the interpretation !!!!

The Bb-major modulation in the middle is simply ethereal.

This is one of my favorite concertos! It has such constant energy and 'fuco'! Mendelssohn is too often overlooked by pianists. He has some great repritore out there. His piano duets are amazing too! Thanks for this video!
