@brunobb1 Layne gave the band the rare....the different..........the unique. HE came up with jerry cantrell's guitar and jerry played.....the wierd rythm, beat, the wierd good unique music was all layne.
he made the band stick out from EVERYONE else with his xtremely unique voice, xtremely random, funky styles and unique personallity. this afro bullshit makes alice in chains look like EVERY OTHER modern rock and grunge band.

All of that No Layne, No Chains is BULLSHIT. Bands aren't simply the frontman. They're composed of members. I love Layne, but hating on Duvall is ridiculous. If you hate the new AIC, you're just an ignorant prick to not realize that the new album is AMAZING. The old stuff was amazing too. They're a talented band. They were in the 90s and they are now. And I gotta say, I don't get all the ripping on DuVall, I mean yeah, you can't beat Layne Staley, but DuVall is GOOD. I refused to listen to any new stuff because I thought it'd suck witthout Layne, but I got Black Gives Way to Blue for Christmas and it's amazing, DuVall has a great voice. To all the Alice in Chains "fans" that are hating on DuVall, I am gonna take the Eddie Vedder method and give you guys the "fucking FINGER".

Cantrell wrote 99 % of the old AIC stuff? Ha! Do your homework kids, that's not true. And if Cantrell was so talented as a songwriter, why did his solo stuff suck ass? It doesn't matter who wrote what, Staley, Cantrell, Kinney, Starr & Inez made the band popular and they created the songs and the sound TOGETHER.

@jalkkis His solo stuff didn't really suck. He did write a majority of the band's songs. Nutshell and Angry Chair are the only songs by Staley that I can think of off the top of my head. But you're right about them together making the band what it was, and what it somewhat is today. R.I.P Layne.

Goddamn, this whole "Old AIC vs. New AIC" smackfest is so fucking stale. It's been going on since people found out that the rest of the band didn't die the same night Layne did. They have already won "Best Comeback Artist of 2009", and sell out every show they play. I'd say the opinions of a bunch of "Laynefans" don't mean jack shit. And Cantrell is a very influential heavy guitarist, with quite a singing voice as well. He copies no one; however, many copy him.
