What the fuck happened to visual effects in the last 30 years? Why does everything look more fake now than it did with less advanced technology?
Also, the audio effects for this scene are pathetic. The worm has no gravity in it's motions or any gravitas in it's actions. It doesn't look ponderous or slow, nor does it seem large and imposing. It really just fails to match up with how well Lynch did things with the film, even if he mutilated the source material. He at least made things seem big.
Dune 1984's characters were close as how I pictured them and the costumes were far better than this. This was like a remake from someone who hasn't completely read the book lol.
Oh maaan... it's something with my eyes or they just stayed for all this time on the fck!*$g stage? ( 0:07 - 0:52 ) Just look at this wallpaper of desert just behind the sandbox on which they stay. Pathetic... Who really wants to see Dune, should see it through eyes of the book. None version is perfect even that made by Lynch.
They wear their hoods too high, and no true Fremen would ever be out in the Dune with the face mask off and moreover a true Freman would reclaim the tribe's water from one so foolish as to act so.
@AmazingL4rry At least they stilsuits where closer in this version, and honestly, they walked around without their masks in the 80's dune as well, this version was MUCH closer.
For all its faults, the Lynch version at least gave the sandworms the sense and scale of power they deserved. The ones from the SciFi series feel so anemic compared to how they're described in the novel.
Actually those are instructions to the rest of the Fremen on the direction they ought to guide the sandworm; I believe what he is saying is either 'left' or 'go faster'.
doesn't it suck that the only really GOOD dune adaptation was made by the scy fy channel
serious when the station who brings us straight to t.v movies like highlander the source and savage planet beat everyone else, it's time to rethink your life
Imagine James Cameron directing Dune. It may not be such a good idea - he'll make all the Fremen blue! Then there's the screenplay, the actors, etc. So many elements to consider. The cost for a multi-part Dune film blows the mind. And the bottom line is this; all studio executives care about are profits and they decide everything. I have to take a sit and wait attitude on this one. Sorry for going on and on like that.
Nah Avatar is already Dune re-written since Cameron stated that when he did the treatment in 1993 he was influenced by Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Heavy Metal magazine and Frank Herbert's Dune books as he is a true fan of those things. You can tell how Avatar is similar to Dune. Do you think Children of Dune is the only good Dune movie ever and better than both the Lynch monstrosity and the dune-light mini-series? it knows how to be an improvement.
Neither the 1984 nor the 2000 version came anywhere close to living up to Herbert's novels. By neccessity whenever a book is turned into a movie the two are never the same. Budgetary and time restrictions make it nearly imposible. Add to that changes made by production company suits and it's amazing the film is made at all. But to choose between the lesser evil I'd go with Lynch because he had the balls to try something new.
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah like Lord of the the Rings. If they do it in 3 or 4 parts it has more of a chance of actually being good. I'm re-reading the series now and Herbert really packs a lot of detail into every page. Every one of those details translates into a lot of feet of film. Can they do that? Most important is who the director is going to be. Even if they choose a great director it doesn't garantee anything. (continued)
@spacecowboy5000 I'd even say Dune fits perfectly for a Trilogy. That's one thing the mini-series did right. It divided the story into three parts: The Atreides arrival on Arrakis and their downfall, Paul's integration into the Fremen society and finally Paul's campaign against the Harkonnen and the Corrinos. If that were to be made with a bigger budget and with a good director I think it could work. Of course you can never adapt a novel 1-1 to the screen but you can stay true to the essence.
@Wurzelknecht Ultimately, to get it as close to right as possible, they would have to do something similar to how Lord of the Rings was presented. One movie for each of the three first books. Obviously, it would take a director who is almost as familiar with the books as the fans and who does a lot of research into everything relating to Dune. There are many themes in this book, many threads weaving in and out of each other. Any director would have a difficult job making this work.
@spacecowboy5000 well essentially that's what Peter Jackson proofed with LotR: To make a decend Adaption from book to film a director needs to be two things: 1) a good director and 2) a diehard fan of the source material or even better a complete nerd for the whole mythology of the source material.
I say Alfonso Cauron or Del Toro should do it, besides Cameron already did his own Dune called Avatar which he stated that it was one of the influences for Avatar when he wrote in 1993. It's the same damn thing you know. Maybe it's time someone should do a Dune-Avatar spoof trailer of having Avatar's trailer dubbed into scenes from both Dune movies.
I remember when seeing this when the Space channel (Canada) did the whole mini-series as a marathon. It was impressive, but then again I was 12 or 13 when it came out. It definitely did not age well. Like the fake backgrounds are more easibly noticeable with older eyes (you can even see the light sort of reflecting of the matte/green screen where there should be multiple dunes) And the CGI is pretty iffy. The lighting is pretty terrible when they're on the worm.
David Lynch's movie was a massacre of a great book and one of the worst movies ever, it's just a 47 million dollar turkey that rapes the brilliance of the novel from Lynch who has never read the book before. I'm still waiting for the new 4-part big screen movie from a director who cares about the material. Afterall there are similar movies to Dune such as Avatar, The Matrix, Nausicaa, Stargate, The Fifth Element, Dark City, The Dark Crystal, Excalibur and Heavy Metal, who agrees?
@Johnlindsey289 Dude david lynch may have made a jumbeld mess, but look at this, horrible acting and horrible music with laughable costumes, this is one of the most laughably bad story remakes david lynch at least made a dignified stor, with good acting, seriously man read the book then watch david lynch's film then watch this film and you see which film does the movie justice
Do you think the new movies coming soon in theaters will do justice more than Lynch's monstrosity or this TV mini-series will ever be? both never do justice and Lynch was the wrong man for the original movie. You glad they are gonna do a new 4-part big screen Dune movie? it's the only way to get Dune in theaters and right.
It's really sad this movie has such crappy special effects, it'd be so cool if they'd remake it...! And no, I'm not hating on the movie, I know it's an old one, but I just think it could be an Oscar winner if it was remade with modern techniques!
Lol, the Fremen outfits totally remind me of Scorpion from MK. Never seen this version before, what's it from? (I mean specifically, I know it's from the Dune story.)
i enjoyed any and all versions of Dune. I really liked how they showed a different take on the Fremen. the Fremen were completely awesome. i always admired anyone skilled in guerilla warfare: alive or fictional.
this version it should look nicer than the 1984's , but I wanna cry like a baby everytime I see that fucking cloth backdrop!!!! aaaaaaghhhh!... goddammit!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the 80s movie for style and theme much more than this...if it's ever remade they should keep some of that dark look and stick closer to the book.
The TV looks silly to be honest - Dune is an epic book and TV does it no justice especially with the production design they went with.
The thing I like about Lynches version best is that almost every word is took right from the book, but there is still (series has it too, but not so much) gaps, what I seen the 80s one is more loyal to the book, still series has many better things too, but this one pissed me off, he is climbing Shai-Hulud, the worm is suppoused to spin so the exposed "meat" is on top most part of maker's body.
Well the '80s version had better production values (except the shields...ughh), this has far better acting (I mean, STING as Feyd?!) and is so much closer to the actual story.
Sting was PERFECT! Are you crazy? If you could take all the actors and design from the film and apply it to the tv series with all it's scenes intact, then you have possibly the best sci fi series ever.
My God, this looks so much worse than the 80's film version. At least that was shot in the desert and not on a badly lit soundstage with a giant picture of a desert in the background. This almost seems like a theater production.
..just watched the whole series again + Children of Dune...in spite of the flaws ,it's a good introduction to the great creation of Frank Herbert..the mesmerizing Dune universe..also loved David Lynch's 1984 Dune...let's hope the upcoming movie won't any worse than aforementioned...but one has to read the books ...
well, if i want to know the story of the book, i will read it.
Movie has other criteria of "being good" as the book. Ergo it cannot has the same plot. For me the 84 version is much better, acting better, costumes better, music far better, and some special efect better also :)
First of, It's Paul Atreidies, second of all, It's not Muad'Dib, it's Muad'Gib, Which paul is not. Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach, Mahdi, Mentat, and an Atreidies, but not a "Muad'Dib".
You are wrong. First of all, the correct spellings are "Atreides" (p. 6) and "Muad'Dib) (p.3). Secondly, Paul's name among the fremen is "Paul-Muad'Dib, who is Usul among us." (p. 327) The page numbers come from the Ace hardcover edition.
First of all, he is given a name and then allowed to choose a name for himself. He is Given Usil, was born Paul, and chose Muad'dib, the name of teh mouse shadow on the second moon, making him Usil, Paul Muad'dib. Noob.
For a miniseries that took place before the advent of the big budget miniseries' like HBO's Rome, and Battlestar Galactica, this one does surprisingly well. I can forgive it for being lower budget.
omfg, this is just a totaly awful scene, the worm looks like a bus and fremens as its passengers. Acting is horrible, and special efect are even worse than in dune from '84.
I always read that "it's closer to the book than lynch version"
well, kids, this is not a book, this is supossed to be a MOVIE, and lynch dune is much more worth to watch than this "more close to the book"
Interesting comments. But for many fans, accuracy to the source material is more important than visual appeal. It's not just Dune.
Here's food for thought: it is entirely possible for an adaptation to actually replace its source in popular consciousness. Planet of the Apes is a classic example. It departs from its source material quite a bit, but it's the movie that we know today. Not the book. And the Wizard of Oz. . .
Holy crap, that's retarted. You can clearly see the faulty sh*t layering in Lynch's so called "movie", it looks like he's in front of a f*cking green screen, and plus, the movie shouldn't be called "Dune" if it isn't true to the book, and this was so much more true than that piece of sh*t concoction that Lynch brewed up. Sad, just sad that you see Lynch's movie better than this. Sure, it sucks, but anything is better than Lynch's "Dune", Even Star Wars Episode 1 with Jar-Jar...
If you have no idea of moviemaking, don't blame others. You obviously don't even know that green screens are a product of the digital age, and previously, blue screens were the standard staple, and if anything is visibly chroma key, it is this clip here, because you can almost smell the studio air.
First of all I make movies all of the time with my friends and we utilize greenscreens as much as we can but I see your argument. watch the original again and see how obvious it is that Kyle McLachlan is in front of a greenscreen Now compared to the faulty/obvious animation in this Dune rendition I suppose that a greenscreen was Lynchs only option considering that highquality special effects were yet to be discovered I just like this version better. Dont get me wrong I liked Lynchs version too
And I also realize that they use the greenscreen poorly in this film as well, the worm looks horrible, but the other movie just doesn't do something for me that for some reason this one did.
The other movie at least used an actual desert instead of declaring a sandbox inside a studio makes a suitable substitute for a desert planet... That's like shooting "the Enemy Below" in a bathtub. It might have included a few more of the finer points of Herbert's story, but it was produced with a much more open audience much more used to this kind of stories. However its TV production status is painfully visible at the many seams it comes apart at, where Lynch's presentation revels in grandeur.
haha at "The Enemy Below" analogy. I do agree with you on that one mate, the background could hardly settle as even a background, it looks like a cardboard cutout or a clip from a Science magazine. For me, Lynch's concoction was a little painful for me to watch only because it wasnt so true to the story as it should have been I guess he felt so glorified after Eraserhead and Elephant Man that he got cocky and attempted Dune, but failed to deliver what I had expected of it but I still enjoyed it.
well, not exactly, but I like this one because it was still more true to the story, however, the original was more interesting and used "artistic licenses" for their own ideas.
Ugh, how can anyone remotely say this scene is as good or better than the David Lynch version. Even the effects from 20 years before were much more convincing and don't get me started on the acting, costumes, and photography.
Well, in all fairness, David Lynch had a much bigger pocketbook than these guys did. Complain all you like, and you may even be right, but the miniseries was very good, all things considered.
It's probably a painting. It's easier and cheaper to film in a studio with a backdrop rather than somewhere on location or with a blue/green screen.
If the Usul is the biggest complaint you have about the accuracy of the series over the movie, I would wonder at what you would think about reducing the Fremen's martial prowess to Atredies Sound Guns. David Lynch's movie, while good, brutally raped the book and just used a few scenes and characters that could be recognized.
Ick, I thought this miniseries was crap. The Lynch movie may not have been as close to the story, but it got the vibe and atmosphere down much better than this turd of a series...
true. and i'd have to say that this is even worse because of all of the new technology available (ever see LOTR?) to make a good Dune movie that was simply not used.
Besides, its just worse. Hell, look at the sandworm! or Leto. remember, the soundtrout COVERS him...not just his arm.
I like the 80s movie for style and theme much more than this...if it's ever remade they should keep some of that dark look and stick closer to the book.
The TV looks silly to be honest - Dune is an epic book and TV does it no justice especially with the production design they went with.

wtf is up w/ the fake dune bakround? and the shity cgi? the book is far supirior
SpartanPikachu117 2 years ago
i'm sorry
i agree with everybody the 84 version was better and darker this is just cheesy!!!!!!!!!!!
mnlkthms 2 years ago 3
The thing I like about Lynches version best is that almost every word is took right from the book, but there is still (series has it too, but not so much) gaps, what I seen the 80s one is more loyal to the book, still series has many better things too, but this one pissed me off, he is climbing Shai-Hulud, the worm is suppoused to spin so the exposed "meat" is on top most part of maker's body.
Toneai2007 2 years ago
I can't believe they actually used that backround. This looks laughably bad. The 80s version is a jillion times more cool than this.
TajMan55 2 years ago 3
Well the '80s version had better production values (except the shields...ughh), this has far better acting (I mean, STING as Feyd?!) and is so much closer to the actual story.
CursorWrathwind 2 years ago
Sting was PERFECT! Are you crazy? If you could take all the actors and design from the film and apply it to the tv series with all it's scenes intact, then you have possibly the best sci fi series ever.
leftovercowboy 2 years ago 3
C'mon, the actual Dune is the novel, this miniseries is like a play, that's why i like it.
cmsahe 2 years ago
My God, this looks so much worse than the 80's film version. At least that was shot in the desert and not on a badly lit soundstage with a giant picture of a desert in the background. This almost seems like a theater production.

.."..fear is the mind killer.."..always love this part of the story...

..just watched the whole series again + Children of Dune...in spite of the flaws ,it's a good introduction to the great creation of Frank Herbert..the mesmerizing Dune universe..also loved David Lynch's 1984 Dune...let's hope the upcoming movie won't any worse than aforementioned...but one has to read the books ...
ps3ud0nym8 3 years ago
what is this mini series called?
mousecat321 3 years ago
The mini series for the original is Frank Herbert's Dune. It's on 3 dvds
jdmitchell2 3 years ago
david lynch movie was dark and boring. and didnt fit the story.. you cant make a movie about a story but change everything..
the mini series is 1million times better.. than that 1984 crap
aoescool 3 years ago
Whilst I agree that the mini series is more true to Dune canon, the movie is far superior when it comes to actual acting etc IMO.
Gargantou 3 years ago
well, if i want to know the story of the book, i will read it.

BlackLink27 3 years ago
You are wrong. First of all, the correct spellings are "Atreides" (p. 6) and "Muad'Dib) (p.3). Secondly, Paul's name among the fremen is "Paul-Muad'Dib, who is Usul among us." (p. 327) The page numbers come from the Ace hardcover edition.

Paul is Muad'dib. Once, when asked what his freemen name should be, Paul oversaw a desert mice and asked what the name is.

One dune in the background looks like a vulva.
VitoPossilipo 3 years ago
Oh, my... does that look cheap!!! And the actor of Stilgar, totally not-Fremen like!
VitoPossilipo 3 years ago
Personally about this scene, i prefer the lynch version, it has something much more epic in it.
orbitalchiller 3 years ago
The Children of Dune Sci-Fi mini-series looked so much more realistic than this "adaptation"...
Hosea22 3 years ago
anyone know what Muad'Dib yells at the very end?
Kakerot4141 3 years ago
Ach Hai Yo, which in the book is explained as a worm steersman command.
Ultramar4817 3 years ago 8
omfg, this is just a totaly awful scene, the worm looks like a bus and fremens as its passengers. Acting is horrible, and special efect are even worse than in dune from '84.
I always read that "it's closer to the book than lynch version"
well, kids, this is not a book, this is supossed to be a MOVIE, and lynch dune is much more worth to watch than this "more close to the book"
RestorRestorRestor 3 years ago
Interesting comments. But for many fans, accuracy to the source material is more important than visual appeal. It's not just Dune.
Here's food for thought: it is entirely possible for an adaptation to actually replace its source in popular consciousness. Planet of the Apes is a classic example. It departs from its source material quite a bit, but it's the movie that we know today. Not the book. And the Wizard of Oz. . .
trueedge2097 3 years ago 3
Holy crap, that's retarted. You can clearly see the faulty sh*t layering in Lynch's so called "movie", it looks like he's in front of a f*cking green screen, and plus, the movie shouldn't be called "Dune" if it isn't true to the book, and this was so much more true than that piece of sh*t concoction that Lynch brewed up. Sad, just sad that you see Lynch's movie better than this. Sure, it sucks, but anything is better than Lynch's "Dune", Even Star Wars Episode 1 with Jar-Jar...
halostarwarsfreak13 3 years ago
If you have no idea of moviemaking, don't blame others. You obviously don't even know that green screens are a product of the digital age, and previously, blue screens were the standard staple, and if anything is visibly chroma key, it is this clip here, because you can almost smell the studio air.
ohauss 3 years ago
First of all I make movies all of the time with my friends and we utilize greenscreens as much as we can but I see your argument. watch the original again and see how obvious it is that Kyle McLachlan is in front of a greenscreen Now compared to the faulty/obvious animation in this Dune rendition I suppose that a greenscreen was Lynchs only option considering that highquality special effects were yet to be discovered I just like this version better. Dont get me wrong I liked Lynchs version too
halostarwarsfreak13 3 years ago
As far as I know, in 1984 they already used blue screens.
VitoPossilipo 3 years ago
And I also realize that they use the greenscreen poorly in this film as well, the worm looks horrible, but the other movie just doesn't do something for me that for some reason this one did.
halostarwarsfreak13 3 years ago
The other movie at least used an actual desert instead of declaring a sandbox inside a studio makes a suitable substitute for a desert planet... That's like shooting "the Enemy Below" in a bathtub. It might have included a few more of the finer points of Herbert's story, but it was produced with a much more open audience much more used to this kind of stories. However its TV production status is painfully visible at the many seams it comes apart at, where Lynch's presentation revels in grandeur.
ohauss 3 years ago
haha at "The Enemy Below" analogy. I do agree with you on that one mate, the background could hardly settle as even a background, it looks like a cardboard cutout or a clip from a Science magazine. For me, Lynch's concoction was a little painful for me to watch only because it wasnt so true to the story as it should have been I guess he felt so glorified after Eraserhead and Elephant Man that he got cocky and attempted Dune, but failed to deliver what I had expected of it but I still enjoyed it.
halostarwarsfreak13 3 years ago
I like this one better than Lynch's version. His version tried to cram the first 3 books into one movie.
jdmitchell2 3 years ago
well, not exactly, but I like this one because it was still more true to the story, however, the original was more interesting and used "artistic licenses" for their own ideas.

Uwe Ochsenknecht is funny as Stilgar. :-) But he was "a bit" miscast, when it comes to physical appearance... :-P Fremen should be more thin.

i personally find this miniseries quite entertaining, closer to the original story than David Lynch's movie.
Magosienne 3 years ago 3
This miniseries is, unfortunately, just an absolute pain to watch.
brand666 3 years ago
Ugh, how can anyone remotely say this scene is as good or better than the David Lynch version. Even the effects from 20 years before were much more convincing and don't get me started on the acting, costumes, and photography.
freakinmayhem 3 years ago
Well, in all fairness, David Lynch had a much bigger pocketbook than these guys did. Complain all you like, and you may even be right, but the miniseries was very good, all things considered.
trueedge2097 3 years ago
they didn't call him by his Seitch name... in 1984 film they did. and whats up with the backround, it looks like a poster or something.
pauld1429 3 years ago 3
It's probably a painting. It's easier and cheaper to film in a studio with a backdrop rather than somewhere on location or with a blue/green screen.
If the Usul is the biggest complaint you have about the accuracy of the series over the movie, I would wonder at what you would think about reducing the Fremen's martial prowess to Atredies Sound Guns. David Lynch's movie, while good, brutally raped the book and just used a few scenes and characters that could be recognized.
Ultramar4817 3 years ago
Ick, I thought this miniseries was crap. The Lynch movie may not have been as close to the story, but it got the vibe and atmosphere down much better than this turd of a series...
JosephK1980 3 years ago
true. and i'd have to say that this is even worse because of all of the new technology available (ever see LOTR?) to make a good Dune movie that was simply not used.
Besides, its just worse. Hell, look at the sandworm! or Leto. remember, the soundtrout COVERS him...not just his arm.
iPh0neN3rd 3 years ago
Which Dune is this? I like this version of the sandworm trial just as much as the 1984 movie version.
