I'm gay and I support gay marriage, but I understand what he's saying. He's saying that marriage has religious connotations and because different religions have different views on marriage, it should not be rewarded any rights under secular law. Instead, those laws should be tranferred to civil unions which would be available to everyone, and marriage would be out of the legal sphere and be solely the decision of different religions and individuals.
i totally support and believe in you! Ralph,Matt and team!-i think then that marriage and civil union should probably be considered to be the same term! hehe! voicing opinions is fun!
I'm amazed because this has been my stance for years. In France, due to separation of church and state, only civil unions are recognized by the state. After you get one, you can do whatever type of religious ceremony you wish.
my senator mitch mcconnell voted yes bailout and he has lost my VOTE here everyone else needs to do the same find out who your congressman and senators are and vote them out get a sign for who is running agianst them put it in your yard and lets vote these crooks out of office and dont forget OBAMA / MCCAIN WHO BOTH VOTED FOR IT ( VOTE THIRD PARTY)(VOTE NADER)a vote for nader is a vote NO for new world order
Nader tells it like it is, really. In the popular imagination, marriage is more a religious institution than it is a legal one. If we want the same benefits as those afforded in marriage, the easiest way for us to gain them is to allow them the word and then relegate the term to a civil, devoid of political weight. He isn't arguing against marriage, he's arguing against marriage as a state-sanctioned.
Why should it be illegal? How can any country call itself free (as in freedom) and saying it supports equal rights if it does not allow some groups of people to marry? It's absurd!

Ralph is a loser for saying yes to equal rights but then, inconsistently, insisting that gay couples not call it marriage. A different lable is merely a way to put the minority in its place. Gay marriage in California is mainly what I'm addressing, and here it's still controversial to the nuckledraggers.
Its not a cop out at all, its just that marriage was originally reserved for religious institutions and he understands the mindset of most people, he is right, it is hurting their cause. We should all work towards getting the state out of marriage, civil unions whatever you want to call it.
Gosh. Nothing seems to have prepared you for reality. Gays have existed as long as marriage, and integrating them into marriage can only serve us all, remove the nonsensical shame of loving adults, and get on with our lives. Nadir did cop out on this. Pathetic compromise.
It wasn't just the Corvair that he was attacking. It was the entire car industry designing cars that didn't have any sensible safety features like something as simple as having seatbelts, or not having dashboards and steering wheels made out of chrome, so you don't bash your skull in when you're in a collision. It used to be the car industry talking point that it was the crazy behind the wheel that was responsible for car accident deaths, and not the design of the car.
Like everything else, as we are learning, freedom of religion entails responsibilities, and unfortunately responsibilities need governing. Churches are not allowed to do anything they want, like fuk their kids, or discriminate against gays when the church takes money from government.
I have been saying the same thing for a long long time. There should be no marriages whatsoever in this country as they are used as an excuse by social conservatives to repress the rights of others. Abolish marriage and then we can move towards true equality.

I have held these same views for a while now but every time I try to explain it people accuse me of being homophobic.
I think that gay people should be able to form unions and get all the same benefits married people do.
But technically speaking marriage is defined as a union between a man and a women.
So gay people should be allowed to have their unions and they can call it whatever they want.

nothing but marriage under the law is equal.

This is why Nader is a loser. It's going to be marriage equality sooner rather than later.

Does that make him a loser?
In my country it is legal...

jerrydoubleu, he is saying that people will support gay marriage more if it isn't called marriage.
internetaccount122 3 years ago
But you see, it must be called marriage. Nothing less than equality will do, and a variant label will not be equal.
jerrydoubleu 3 years ago
It must be exactly the same.

What he is trying to say is that the State should have never even been involved in marriage. It should be up to the private sector.
