@undergroundFail No, chainmail doesn't get into knots, simply because it is linked in such a way, that when you twist it or bend it, it stays in its same form because it is linked entirely to each and every ring.
thats pretty cool. i made a jap. cube simmilar thto that one. with 10 by 10 rows w/ quarter inch id rings with three rings instead of two like you have. nearly shot myself before its completion though
Thank you for the videos regarding chainmail you've posted. They have been extremely helpful in my learning process. I'm currently working on a chainmail skirt as my rookie project and like seeing how others make their rings.
hey this comment isnt nescisarily about this vid but your chainmail vids in general they are amaizing ,really really good videos and you should allow comments you would get a lot of good ones
I do the hole for neck nicely rounded (like it is on real shirt). It needs a little diffrent approach, because then you dont make stright lines, but you must stright the lines by adding some extra rings during the whole process to have them stright on the body part again. But Im just on beginning of the process and have no idea how it is going to look like as a whole. Have you tryied this way also? To make the neck hole rounded?
I'm not really sure what you mean. As in patching pieces of chain together with fabric? cause unless your using REALLY heavy duty fabric its just going to rip apart.
Ahh byzantine yes I did forget to show that one. As far as persian patterns go I never figured out the 4 in 1. The only one I do know is the 6 in 1 and my web cam suxs so the video quality would be crap. Most of the other patterns you mentioned anyone can figure out by simply looking at a picture, there is no need to make a video. That elf weave pattern does look interesting though, but also really heavy I MIGHT make a video about that.
how bout byzantine or reverse byzantine or japanese 8 in 4 or kings maille or dragonscale weave or persian, grizzly, scale, elf weave, birdnest, lobster the list goes on dont say there isnt anything left till youve done everything...
There is no 5 in 1 pattern to my knowledge, however there is a 6 in 1 sometimes times called "king's mail" i believe and no I wont be showing it. Because its the exact same concept as 4 in 1 just with two additional rings to every center ring.
Hey man, kinda a bummer you arnt making anymore videos, but I understand that there isent much elts to it outside of exploring. Just wanted you to know that you did a great job with your explanations, and if you have any other "How-to" capable hobbies, I would love to see more from you. Please grab my atentin if you do.
Hey thx for the comment, it is very much appreciated. I was thinking of maybe putting up some videos on cleaning some firearms or some information on kendo. But other than that I don't know.
That's very interesting. I can imagine how that cube would behave in a gravity free environment, absorbing collisions: sort of like a chain mail "particle system". One to consider for the computer! Great videos and very unique.
I dont know how to say this w/o sounding rude but ill try not to.what ppl conceive as "plate mail" is actually just plain and simple plate armor. The thought of pieces of plate armor held together by lengths of chainmail is a result of RPGs and fantasy games :)
IF you ever had to chance to wear plate armor, the idea of also wearing chain underneath it, or as a means to hold it together will make you cringe, it would be like gluing sandpaper on the inside of a really tight sweater and jogging with it on. Also, a chainmail suit was extremely expensive to have built, and plate was even more expensive! If a noble could afford plate armor, theres no point in patching it together with chain which wouldn't offer as much protection.
Moron. Of course this existed. I have no sources here for a brigantin-like plate armour with mail as understuff, but this is very likely to have existed. It may existed in a scale-way, but it has existed in a way where just some parts were covered, like elbows or knees.
Anyway. That you wore your plateing together with a chainmail wasn't even a exeption, it was normal. chainmail was more expensive than plate mail, by the way.
And it does offer a protection, as you know, plate armour, even in late times, still offered uncovered space. This space was protected, and, not to underestimate, the psychological value of such a chainmail in addition is big. You may don't realize this, but just look at this plate armour with mail-application, it flatters around and doesn't give you the same feeling as the whole or partial chain armour would give you.
If ever, I have some nice literature on this topic, just PM me.
And I don't like to say this, but: Damn, you're American! This is nothing else than European history. Worst of all is medieval history (and everything before that), please, you've got no clue. The best source you have is Hollywood. Which is not as bad, by the way :P
NO, actually i do have a clue, and thank you so much for your adult-like response. My info comes from not only studying war and medieval history in college, but also from the history majors i hung around with, and
from the medieval reenactment group i was involved with for four years. BRIGANTINE armor (which I have also made) did not use chainmail. The reason it was so popular was because it was cheaper than chain, it was just pieces of metal plates sandwiched between two pieces of leather and riveted together.
And as far as your "well educated opinion goes" perhaps you could offer some sources for this armor you describe as and I quote "I have NO sources here for a brigantin-like plate armour with mail as understuff, but this is very LIKELY to have existed," end quote. And if you read my response above carefully, which you probably didn't, I said that plate mail with chain patches would offer LESS protection.
Chain would save you from getting cut, but your still taking the force of a metal weapon, sword, mace etc. and its most likely going to break whatever bone it strikes. Oh, and quit w/ the whole "damn you Americans" crap, i am so sick and tired of hearing that noise. I don't insult people and draw on ethic or racial stereotypes. Now quiet down, go drink some tea, and get your teeth fixed. Have a nice day :D
