You need a base color, that's always something you put on you nail first. This way the colors will show up better. And the people that tell you tape is something you HAVE to put around your finger, that's not true. You can simply take of the excess nail polish with nail polish remover, or let it dry completely and peel it off your fingers later on. :)

OP: You should make more of a bullseye, and put your fingernail flat in. You also should probably do more than one take next time. Also, Vaseline or tape around your fingernails is recommended.
