(con't..) ... Djing was a competitive thing and a physical thing. If you can't carry two crates worth of records; if your arms not right at that strong to do, you have not business be called yourself a selected. Now, if you got a couple of Ipods at the party...is that making you a dj!? Just cause you bought a macbook does not make you a DJ. If you have no love for getting your knuckles dusty then watch you are is a guy and enthusiast. YOU ARE NOT A DJ!
...Do you have any advice for the new kids on the block who trying to make a name for themselves? LEARN HOW TO SPIN! Learn how to spin...Turn the damn auto-mix function off of your laptops if you have to use laptop. But you have to understand this, watch some Kung Fu movies, go watch some Kung Fu movies. I am saying, why, why kung fu movies. I was some lonely traveler, going from town to town challenging people to battles. That's what was this was at one point.
Sure, part of what he's relating, in different terms... Let's say 'everyone' were to make the total conversion to digital, and those that had "issues" with it either got out of the game or got over them, or like many would prefer I'm sure that they'd just shut the f*#@k up... What's going to be left? Many would consider it a trifle, but like Theo, I'd argue that they, we, whomever is left are not going to be DJ's... Already it's become somewhat of a language artifact, and thus somewhat B.S.
I love Theo Parrish. But I disagree with his definition of what a DJ is. Yeah, ok, just having 2 iPods plugged into a system probably sucks, but if you the people moving, and you select the right tunes, who cares what the format is? It's like saying a movie on a DVD isn't a movie.
@ig249 No offense, but I think he means that many people who call themselves DJ's or producers today have allowed the technology to cheapen what was once a culture. It doesn't have to be this way, but people often let it be so. Deadmau5 is a perfect example of a young arrogant producer who openly hopes that DJ's go the way of the dinosaur, when the very physical act of acquiring records, studying them, and mixing them deepens one's cultural roots and makes one's music that much more relevant.
@ig249 It's why Deadmau5's tracks all sound the same, use the same synths, the same drums, and it's totally detached from any musical history. His ignorance of contemporary urban and jazz music is apparent in the music he makes. It is also his refusal to collect and study music that puts him in a bubble where he can think that he is the best and everything he does is the best, where if he took time to listen to something like Theo's tracks he would be humbled by the depth.
I remember sitting in this mans' bedroom back in his college days in K.C.Mo. and we'd all be sitting there mesmerized as he played some of the most incredible stuff any off us had ever heard, not that we had not necessarily heard the songs before, but we had never heard them the way HE presented them...A BORN LEGEND!!!THANKS THEO,Darrell
i remember the 1st time i heard a theo tune 'overyohead' it was like reading a book, head changing.. i remember the first i saw theo spin, on the north-east coast about a decade ago, it was something else...the way he was playing was so fresh that no- one knew how to dance to it... there are mavericks like theo in most musical genres like sun ra, photek etc... who go beyond the superficiality of their proffesion and seem to see it as a way to express a deeper reality... cool interview ta 4 uplo
Yeah, REAL RACIST. Great DJ, but being a racist in 2010 is really a bit fuckin dumb...
Another thing that's idiotic is using the world's best sounding rotary mixer (in my opinion) and then always playing it so loud that the sound is ALWAYS distorted which is making the audience deaf. When you consider that he's one of the very few DJs who have a degree in sound sculpture, not understanding that distortion does not sound good on the floor. is damn STUPID, sorry.
I knew Theo back in the day when he worked for Music and Melodies record store right outside of Detroit...I would spend hours in there with him...cool cat! And, yea, what he says of spinnin' is soooo right!
Yeah, I am sure you knew him so well considering that the name of the store you are referring to is actually called "Melodies and Memories".... douche. quit trying to hang on theo's balls. you had nothing to do with it.
Nothing to do with what Asswipe! Yea, that's where I met Theo...when he worked at Melodies and Memories on gratiot...nobody is hanging on his balls tapeworm!
Theo comes down to London's Plastic People every month. It's about the only regular DJ event I attend. I've been collecting records since I was in school and I probably only recognise 40% of the stuff he plays. I looove the way he can flow from Soul/Funk to Boogie to Techno House. The man is ALWAYS worth the entry fee!!!
yeah, great remix though it is, why put it under footage of theo playing where he's unlikely to have ever played it out himself?!
i've a good idea what confused were trying to do, illustrating the pictures but its a bit misleading - especially after what theo was saying about the "boom tish boom tish" - to underlay footage of the man in action with something only remotely connected to him.
It's the only link to what the scene may know him off. It would be stupid not to put it in. And it is C2. So no standard 'boom tish' but "boom tish, boom tis, tish, ish"
