  • anybody who thinks bluegrass is hick music needs to get a load of these guys

  • banjoriff sounds like the halotheme. have bungie stolen it?

  • And on the seventh day ... Bela Fleck rested.

  • It's like a prog rock band got trapped in the country. "FFFFFFFF, OUR INSTRUMENTS ARE GONE... ALL WE HAVE IS A MANDOLIN, ACOUSTIC GUITAR, BASS AND BANJO... WAT DO?" "We rock..."

  • @ReaperX3ro sounds like this can be a great movie... i can see it right now. 4 guys playing a rockband, getting nowhere because their sound like everyone else.... then ONE DAY, a stranger let them hitch a ride but instead, robs them and leave them out on the country road, no money, no music! they found an abandoned house with...

    and so on!

  • these guys have all been to the crossroads!

  • i worked so har to learn this song as a mallet ensemble

  • I believe this is the highest it will ever go.

  • The first two and last 1 1/4 minutes would fit right in on Flight of the Cosmic Hippo.

  • ...and of course Pat Flynn is surely one of the finest flat-pickers ever...

  • Bela Fleck, the Zen Master of the banjo...

  • Does anyone have any idea where i could find an alto sax quartet form of metric lips

  • Some percussionists and I are going to play this for our mallet ensemble. I wish it sounded as cool as this, but most of it is in the music.

  • check out the bassist's bouncy hair. 80's at it's finest.

  • Im killing the replay button

  • Old NGR RUUUUUULES!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to think of the last time I heard anything close to this, and the only thing that comes to mind is a set I heard outdoors at the Paolo Soleri Amphitheatre near Santa Fe, New Mexico on a warm summer night back in 1990 . The band was Strength in Numbers. Not coincidentally, two of these guys were on stage.

  • The Rush of bluegrass!

  • @civilengsi

    Cool!!

Sounds to me more like the YES of Bluegrass to me, at least the intro and intermezzo part... Doesn´t matter though, both would be just as "right" or "wrong" because NGR is something totally unique and awesome. As is the case with most innovators, they invoke diverse sources for inspiration: Bluegrass, Jazz, Psychedelic Rock, Country, etc and create great new genres to plant he seed for future generations.

  • I almost got caught speeding many times listening to this :)

  • go sam GO! :D

  • Ok, Bluegrass isn't my thing but WOW! I heard Sail to Australia this morning on Pig Radio and these guys immediately caught my attention. WOW! Of course, now I'm into Bluegrass since I found these guys.

  • best music i ever heard

  • Gotta love the hair on the middle two

  • whose the acoustic guitarist?

  • @44eelz Pat Flynn

  • @44eelz Pat Flynn.

  • this is so awesome. im playing the keyboard version of this for a concert tomorrow and i wish it sounded half as awesome as this. it just sounds better on strings.

  • our Percussionist this on the Mallets! And it was awesome!

  • my god 2:06 thru 2:09.

    pat flynn is so sick.

  • I instantly fell in love with this band and then I find out that thats Bela Fleck! Holy shit I love them even more now!

  • I LOVE IT!

  • whos the guitar player?

  • pat flynn

  • Ahh, man. Nashville Now. Talk about great memories. I wish I could get

copies of the classic shows from TNN.

  • I'll never forget the first time heard Bela Fleck play. I was driving and I tuned into our local jazz station for a bit. I heard ..... a banjo? playing jazz? What? I've very much enjoyed listening to what ever genre he's played in ever since be it bluegrass, newgrass, jazz, classical, or some hybrid thereof. Extraordinary!

  • I'm playing a percussion arrangement of this for Solo and Ensemble. It's really fun!

  • Ya i totally played that at my solo Ensemble contest last year. I played the xylophone part: unfortunately, both Marimba parts messed up their solos =/

  • me too!! its so awesome were going to state with it

  • has anyone ever came across tabs for metric lips? thats just about the only song i cant find any for

  • Yes I found the banjo tab at Banjohangout[dot]org. Its not 100% accurate but its errors are minor and pretty easy to correct, esp. since you can watch Bela do it the right way on this vid. Plus it comes with a standard notation version, so you can transfer it to another instrument if you need too. Hope that helps! :)

  • Ive been looking for it as well. :(

  • Oh wow...

    This makes me happy.

  • Thanks for all the Bela Fleck/New Grass Revival tunes! They're great!

  • i used to play harmonica in a band called the Newgrass Experience before now i thought we were the only ppl with New Grass in our name guess not

  • stupendo!!!!

  • Heh, I never knew Chuck Norris could play the mandolin! That guy really can do anything.

  • Dont mess with him or he'll roundhouse pick you in the face!

  • this is very tight. they are awesome musicians this made me like bluegrass a lot.

  • dayum datz tight, it beats da hell outta da percussion ensemble. Whats da second instrument from da left?

i kno dey hav a banjo, and elctric bass, and guitar, but i dont kno wut dat other one is.

  • That is Sam Bush on the Mandolin

  • Oh ok thanx bro

  • mandolin

  • a musical "masterpiece"

  • i am playin the marimba 1 part for this song in percussion ensemble. It's awesome! my part has most of the banjo solos. so much fun.

  • best melodyin the world :)

  • Way better than percussion quartet

  • awesome

  • So many of the tunes Bela has written switch timing throughout the song and he's so good at it you'd hardly notice. All the listener knows is it sounds cool. Awesome composer.

  • OH MY GOSH. i JUST figured out that this was written by Bela Fleck. for years, i've heard the mallet ensemble.. woooow.

wow a lot of hat he plays is turned into percussion ensemble.

just today i took Sinister Minister to competition... and last year i played the Stomping Grounds arrangement.

  • i am playing this for percussion ensemble... its soooooo fun. i have the xylophone part

  • Yeah the xylo part kicks ass i love it =)

  • This is truly gifted

  • did these guys write this or was it bela flek?

  • it was Bela

  • That was amazing!!!!!!!!

  • This song is simply the best. I love the switch between 6/8 and 3/4 timing in the beginning. It's such an amazing peace.

  • incredible! this is why i play mando

  • Wow. They are INSANELY talented. I've only heard the mallet versions of this, but this one is freakin amazing. they make it look effortless too!

    I'm truly inspired.

  • Incredible musicians! this is just as revolutionary as the Flecktones!

  • dang all ive heard was percussion transcriptions for this song but the original version here is pretty dam clean

  • of course it's clean... they wrote the song....

  • Too many notes for you? Go listen to Creedence, these guys are amazing!

  • The melody is quite clear. Perhaps your comment says more about your ear than their playing.

It OK if you don't like though. I think that Pink Floyd is quite brilliant, but I can't stand listening to them.

  • How can you not like listening to pink floyd????

  • I don't know, really. As a musician, I can tell that everything about Pink Floyd's music is excellent, but there is something about it that makes me uncomfortable. It just doesn't connect with me on an emotional level.

  • I can understand that, their music does strike me on a personal level.

  • my god ive just stumbled across this band, theyre great!

  • Holy shit! they make it look so easy too.

  • Viva la Mullet!!!! I played this song for percussion ensemble YEARS ago! Awesome!

  • I played this song for a percussion ensemble in high school, but I did not know the song had this origin til now. sweet!

  • This song is cool.

  • thanks Chris for tellin me about this band

  • Incredible song.

  • Acoustic guitar is great in this, I love this tune.

  • I've always loved this tune.

  • One of my favorite new grass revival tunes. It like 12 tunes in one. Thanks for the memories. Ditto to what musicians WOW!!!!

  • Incredible musicians. Looks like John Cowan was the first to introduce lots of hairspray to the bluegrass world. :)

  • One of THE BEST BANDS OF ALL TIME!!!!

  • wow.

  • Lovin the bass's hair

  • great chemistry ,just pure acoustic, besides the bass, incredible musicanship, and normal people could relate too it cause it was also commercial in away, just like steely dan does ,sneaks in the sophistication without bothering the average listener, great stuff

  • well said

  • amazing song! nice solos!!

  • I hear country, rock, bluegrass, jazz, all in one song. Excellent!!!

  • Such a good song

  • Incredible musicians and incredible band. I saw them live at the Smoot Theater in Parkersburg, and it was filled to capacity. People were crawling out of the woodwork. These guys made some great music together ... check out their greatest hits CD. You'll love it!

  • they did gave this song into a pit percussions quartet right...i prefer this more XD XD XD XD!!!!

  • his banjo sounds weird. Weird tone. What show is this?

  • The show is "Nashville Now" hosted by Ralph Emery. Saw this performance when aired, went out bought 3 cd's they had out, can't find anymore.

  • I think he uses some stereo chorus

  • I wish I were this awesome.

  • banjo is the shit! =P its so awesome!
