I used to love watching Wayne Walker's 49er show each Sunday morning on KPIX. Thank you for this post. It is fun to relive one of the great teams in 49er history and to see this show.
To all you Montana slurpers: Even the Genius himself, Bill Walsh, said that Montana was a product of the system, and Marino WAS the system. This explains why Steve Young was so good with the 49ers and crap with the Bucs. Hell even Jeff Garcia made 5 pro bowls with the 9ers.
i watched most of the games that sea son just about every first possession the 49ers scored. that tough loss to the redskins in the 1983-1984 Nfc championship game was the strongest motivation.
Marino threw 55 td.s leading into the superbowl that season and cam up short! no weapons is how i figure it! nobody around him! no one stepped up! yadda yadda yadda , and i like dan marino a class act all the way. He doesnt need the excuses his fans make for him!
i'm a hardcore NY Giants fan, but this 49er team was great....they were so versatile with Wendell Tyler and Roger Craig in the backfield and had a very very good defense, showcased when they shut the Bears out 23-0 in the NFC title game the previous week....I laugh at people who make it seem like Montana and Walsh needed Rice to be successful....they won 2 Super Bowls and went 18-1 (including winning this Super Bowl) before Rice even came into the league
Joe, jerry, Roger,Clark, Bill meet at a special place and time in history. That's the beauty of it. Every moment or time in history has it's heros and remarkable moments. I think we all need to just stop comparing, judging and just embrace the beauty of that era and time. The San Francisco 49ers made many people proud of the Bay Area and i'm so grateful for all the wonderful memories. I feel that all fans should be grateful for their team and there past champions. I will miss Bill Walsh.
@skeeternic Football is not an individual sport, in case you didn't notice. Montana had a number of key elements Marino never had.....1) A defense...2) A running game....3) A HC who knew how to tactically dismantle an opponent.
Given those differences, it's quite clear how and why Montana has 4 rings and Marino has none.
So what got them to the superbowl? a fucken lottery ticket? no weapons right? at least your half correct in realizing they were outplayed, 55 td leading into the game, who the fuck caught them?
@BIGRED224FOREVER I never said Marino didn't have talent of OFFENSE. That's the key word. They were like the Dan Fouts Chargers more or less. They could score on just about anyone and that in itself guaranteed a lot of wins and playoff appearances, and with Marino it guaranteed a lot of records. But in the NFL, if you have a glaring weakness someone is going to exploit it. The difference really was the HC. Bill Walsh built a TEAM while Shula was twiddling his thumbs. Marino's still the best.
P.Manning doesnt have great a great HC, but yet he is still an elite QB? Montana having B.Walsh as his HC didnt make a difference in his winning ways. Montana was winning since college which is why B.Walsh liked him. B.Walsh thought he had an all around skill set. The 49ers were crap before Montana came. B.walsh 1st year was 2-14. In Montana's 1st year as the starter, BAM...they won the SB. After B.walsh retired, BAM he wins the SB the again. Montana is the best QB ever period....
@YBRR88 You think all they did was outscore everyone? Montana was great, probably the best in that system but according to your logic neither Steve Young nor Seifert should've been able to win a SB. but the did. Marino's the best QB ever. No running game. No defense. A coach way past his prime. Give me Marino in ANY offense and he'll win more games than any other QB. Joe's great in that system though, no question, and if you want to learn how to be a QB watch Joe not Marino.
@YBRR88 You, like others, totally miss the point. Montana played under arguably the greatest HC in NFL history. Being a great coach means you shape a great TEAM. The 49ers had arguably the greatest string of teams in the history of the NFL. Joe was an important piece of that but he wasn't nearly as important as Walsh. All the skills Montana had, Marino had in spades. Put Marino in a 49ers uniform and he'd had five or six Rings, maybe even 7. That's why Seifert and Young have Rings....
@filthyswit Bill Walsh gets nowhere near the credit he deserves. To me he's the greatest NFL HC ever. He was just brilliant and loved the game so much. One of our Classics and all-time greats.
Seifert has a 2nd ring and Young has his only ring because Jerry Jones is the idiot who fired Jimmy Johnson. If Jerry does not fire Jimmy, Steve would still be looking for a ring as a starting QB.
Having an Engineer who designs and builds a great race car is fine. Without a world class driver you never know if the design is practical. Walsh is the greatest coach of all time, hands down. And Montana is the greatest QB of all time, contrary to what those in the MA area believe.
@drbayoms Those are very good points and I generally agree. JJ and Walsh were the two greatest HCs I'd say. Couldn't be more different in style and method but they were both masters of the art. Harbaugh seems to be the next great one. If he'd been at a college with serious talent no doubt he'd have won an NC. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for him to win a Ring. HOWEVER, Marino's the greatest. Any system, any team, any defense, no running game- he still wins. JM had great teams
We disagree on Marino being the Greatest. But it's not like Marino had a lot of help. He had a Top Ten defense only 4 of his 17 years. While the teams that won the Super Bowl 16 of the 17 years he was in Miami had Top 10 Defenses. 13 of the 17 teams to win a Super Bowl during Marino's career had 1,000 yard rushers. Marino had a 1,000 yard rusher 1 time.
No doubt Marino had less to work with. I think Marino is Top 5. Not having a ring does not diminish his Greatness in my eyes.
@drbayoms I look at it this way. If I could only have one QB knowing nothing else about my team or staff, I'd take Marino over any QB except maybe an Aaron Rogers or Peyton Manning. JM was brilliant for that system and as clutch as QB has ever or will ever be, but I'd take Marino in a blind bet. ;-) What's your take on this year's SB?
I believe the Giants are going to blow the Pats out. I think it will be close early. But it will end up the way Super Bowls used to be in the 80s & 90s.
@drbayoms Now that's a prediction!! haha What do you see that makes you think that? You think the Giants can pressure Brady out of the gun and cover the TEs??
I Agree I Looked Forward to Watching 49ers Preview on KPIX 5 With Wayne Walker and He Was a Very Good Color Commentator on 49ers Football With Either Lon Simmons or Joe Starkey It's Just Not the Same

Montana was good, but I wouldn't say he was unbelievable. If Marino had his weapons and defense, he could have won more Super Bowls. So could have Elway.
