  • Lieve Monique,

Waarom zong deze ongelooflijke, schitterende zangeres in een bioscoopzaal als Tuschinki ? Daar hebben we toch het concertgebouw voor !

  • Can't figure out whether or not I like this as much as Zeani...think Zeani just convinces me more. I know this is one of Renee's signatures...

  • sublime voix!!!! très belle femme

  • wooo, she looks sexy

  • I actually agree with robertdonkers...

If we didn't have pirated recordings, I would have never stumbled upon one of my favorite sopranos, Leyla Gencer. Nor would I have been introduced to 'Le postillon du Longjumeau' or ever heard of the Romanian tenor who sings the hell out of the 'The Daughter of the Regiment' aria.

Sure, maybe they are breaking the law. But, some of the greatest works of art happened because someone broke the law. Let's leave this at agree to disagree and enjoy Renee.

  • I love Renee Fleming... but her interpretation lacks oomph here...She's supposed to be a woman scared out of her wits at losing her beauty... but he fear and anger doesn't really show through.

  • I am very grateful that people make pirate recordings. Only a handful great artists are recorded by the recording companies If pirates did not happen then we would never have heard of the great like Olivero, Gencer and many many more

  • Clearly this is filmed at a screening, rather than live in the Met house...why else would she be cut off by the edge of the screen and have subtitles?

  • HALLLO !!! suppose you did not really watch this video did you? You might have notices it contains subtitles. In case you've not been to the Met either, there are no subtitles there ;)

  • @moniquetb LOL, surferchick85 PWNED! :3

  • @surferchick85

With all due respect, I can only bless those opera buffs who film during live performances. Is this such big deal in the crazy, rotten, poor world we're living in? Art and opera should be brought closer to those loving it. I would certainly have filmed too. It doesn't cause any harm. Best.

  • It is not live. You see the captions all throughout it. For instance :39

  • I really dislike these "pirate" videos and not just for the poor quality. Does no one sitting nearby see the damned video camera? It used to be that ushers were all over anyone if they even THOUGHT that they saw so much as the tiny red,"shooting" light. Wish they were still as diligent. See it in HD or wait until " Great Performances"..

  • That is still the way it is -- lucky this person didn't get caught, and I totally agree with you.

  • I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this song - and having had the opportunity to watch the HD performance in the local cinema, I am inspired by opera now. What a beautiful voice!

  • i love renee's notes above the C..they have a unique quality that is different from the rest of her voice

  • My notion is she's lacking culture and flair of movement on stage coherent with the music pulsations. She misses almost every opportunity that otherwise could contribute to the interpretation and lessen the relative weight of her vocal instability and dimness.

  • This comment makes absolutely no sense. It seems as if it was written without an understanding of flowery words used. Next time you want to critique something, know what you're talking about.

  • It's possible. I'm not a native speaker. Which one of my notes (not critiques) weren't clear for you: vocal instability or movements/stage presence out of tune with the musical fluid?

  • The thought occurred to me after I commented. My comment was a little harsh (sorry, I get really into opera), but I guess what I didn't understand was the "lack of culture and flair of movement...coherent with the music pulsations", as well as the "weight of her vocal instability and dimness". I didn't notice any missed opportunities myself, but I may not understand the viewpoint you are coming from.

  • For sure I didn't mean lack of common culture (this would be really a nonsense) but a flair to move the way the music itself suggests, to take advantage of "pulsations" in order to augment the artistic effect. This fits well to the term body language that an exqusite lady such as Thais should master even when she's upset and in the process of self searching. And I was speaking about the relative weight of artistic presence against the pure singing ability. In fact I felt this in her Tatiana.

  • I have often heard and will repeat for the sake of all the critics, you are all welcome to get up and show us how to do it better. Spend the years training, get hired, actually have people pay to enjoy hearing you, and do it well. I can't hit a high D as well as Renee, most sopranos out there don't sound, look, or act. Comparisons are dead, she's alive. I'm happy to buy a ticket to worship her. DIVA!

  • Well said! Well said! She's the main reason I even got into opera.

  • She is the absolute best soprano of our time! She has it ALL: VOICE, TECNIQUE, LOOKS - EVERYTHING! Bravissima!

  • It is a splendid interpretation -- but her high C at the end is not up to par. I heard her Violetta live at the Met last year, and the same thing happened -- the sustained high Cs simply did not match the richness and beauty of her voice beneath. But, oh, everything else is just to sumptuous and lovely!

  • It's a high D..

  • It's a High D, actually.

  • Could you spew your poison somewhere else, please? You're so utterly rude and disgusting, it's sickening!

  • Its like one of my favourite live in HD representation. It was fantastic ! I hope that it will go on DVD soon !

  • I think the Met will put it online soon.

  • You know I really cannot understand why Fleming comes in for so much carping. A beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice, and a fabulous technique. Sure, she has her mannerisms, but what great singer doesn't or didn't? - and Fleming is one of the greatest around today. Let's just be grateful.

  • I don't understand it either, but it seems to go with the territory when you've made it big in classical music. You can read all sorts of nonsense on youtube about every great conductor, instrumentalist or singer you care to mention.

  • l think the same.

  • Saw the performance last night at the met it was amazing..massenet music is so wonderful..no one writes like that..fleming was on-hampson was on--it was great..btw..angela gheorghiu voice is blah!!!small and somewhat pretty..nothing to write home about..if she gets up and sings "Thais" then she can be mention in the same breathe as fleming, untill then, she can continue her mission to get fired from every major opera house. I love Damrau(never does wrong)netrebko(future thais)

  • I cant stop watching this Monique. I didnt have the chance to watch this and I am so grateful u posted it. One lady mentioned that Fleming is too glamorously dressed by LaCroix. Well when at 1955 in La Scala, Callas was complaining to Visconti that he had dressed her like a princess while Amina was a village girl Visconti had replied: But Maria YOU are not! a village girl. You are Callas! Similarly, this is La Fleming and she deserves nothing less than GLAM-GLAM-GLAM :p

  • .. love your Callas remark, totally agree tnx!

  • Wonderful in every aspect. The singing is rock solid from top to bottom, the timbre is unique and the final high note and deep lows are of amazing quality. Her interpretation is somewhat less afflicted than in the video from Paris (concert performance), but she still interprets this aria with the ideal fear of the decadence of her youth and the narcistic response to her doubts. Oh, and I was forgetting: she's incredibly beautiful and sexy! ;-P

  • Baritone426:Have you HEARD angela gheorghiu? diana damrau? anna netrebko? people need to realize that if the Met didn't publicize this voice, people wouldn't like it. it's not enjoyable to listen to - in fact, you really wonder what her voice has to go through to make that sound. she needs to stop covering. listen to fleming's high notes, then listen to Gheorghiu's. gheorghiu's are beautiful, while fleming's are pushed and ugly. please, before you begin hero worship, get an education

  • Hello Baritone426. Sure I know Gheorghiu saw her live a few times and she has a beautiful voice, nice Italian way of singing(great way to move public too), but not the THE VOICE Renee has.Renee has the full-bodied lyricism and also the high pianissimo singing. This full range is rare for a soprano, as you baritone426, being educated, surely know.

Anne Netrebco you mention, is impressive, but like you (17y?), a bit young, she's promising thu but not whatso ever ready for something like thais...

  • I am so confused. Are you praising Gheorghiu or Fleming? Maybe I'm just reading it wrong but your comments seem to contradict one another. And where is the comment by Baritone426? Need a context to work with here. Thanks.

  • I Love Fleming and I also love Gheorghiu, both in theire way. Thais by Fleming is great. I do not agree with Baritone426 Fleming's high notes being UGLY of PUSHED. To me they sound just fine .. WONDERFUL even. As to Gheorghiu, I have heard her sing live wonderful notes too. I Haven't heard her in a complete opera for a while and I'm not very much a Roberto Alagna fan, they're voices are not that nice together. I haven' t heard anything anymore of Baritone 426?

  • too bad you haven't heard her in a complete opera - you're missing out. fleming is an overrated, overzealous soprano who just basically makes sounds. gheorghiu actually sings. and this mystical "voice" that you (moniquetb) describe - where is it? do you enjoy listening to something that is overcovered, over darkened, or in some instances just plain hard to listen to? why is there no clarity in fleming's tone? why can't the listener decipher what the text is that she sings half the time?

  • @baritone426 you are absolutly r i g h t. so less people with ears to hear.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow she is super svelte and gorgeous!

  • so do i see this production of the met at cinema.

Lovely production. Fleming fantastic. T.Hampson (athanael) also. The tenor M. Shade in a genious caracterisation of nicias, A.Vernhes completes the cas Lopez-cobos very good also.

In fact a splendid cast and production (in plus M.Fleming was dressed by andre lacroix. I hope the DVD will follow very soon.

  • Most likely they'll put it on Met Player in a few weeks...

  • He was great, sorry no recording

  • never mind, thank you.

  • this is from the Met, right?

  • I think you're right she sung this aria soo very well!

  • wonderful! and what about Athanael?

  • Thank you so much, saw it live but this is great to have a reminder of one of the best moments of Thais.

  • stunning.

  • I like that the tag is meth broadcasting

  • I like how you're trying to pass this off as something other than your video camera at the movie theater..lol

  • Well technically it is an in house recording, even though he wasn't there...! It's his In-Movie-Theatre recording though!
