  • I wish they'd take the Irish symbol out of the flag we're not British they may have stolen a bit of our country but hopefully there will be freedom for us one day.

  • This is one of those things you see and slap yourself for not noticing it before.

  • Why is there no Welsh?

  • There's been debates about adding a welsh dragon to the flag for years. Wonder why they've not done it. Guess the Welsh just aren't bothering enough about it.

  • You may be smart but you made a huge mistake you that bit you said was england was wrong the bit that is sticking out to the west is the country of Wales and is not part of england

  • @hellomom1231 At the time, Wales was part of England.

  • @hellomom1231 KINGDOM ON ENGLAND!!! not england...

  • @hellomom1231 also it syas to 1707

  • SHEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When Ireland and Scotland are freed from england a little bit of flag updating will be in order.

    : )

  • @MrIrishBilly Scottish independence ftw!

  • @MrIrishBilly They are "freed" from england. Has Scotland ever been ruled by England?

  • @unrealeck

Where does england store it's nuclear waste and where is englands nuclear arsenal stored. In who's coastal waters does england take it's domestic oil supply from. Who does Scotland pay it's taxes to. Who's currency does Scotland use. Doesn't sound like freedom to me.

  • HAHA!! Looking at the top 2 comments its fair to say that no one can compete with the vast knowledge of CGPGrey..

  • @PowerTheQwerty Apparently not. It seems that only CGPGrey is the only one capable of utilizing Wikipedia before he posts a comment on Youtube.

How much awful argument on the internet could be solved with a quick google? Idiots argue about facts readily available. Actual intellectuals argue about subjective things like politics and sexual positions.

  • @BollocksUtwat Aww come on be fair! You have to admit that he does post really good vids!

  • @BollocksUtwat best comment i've read on youtube in months, makes a good point, finishes with a laugh

  • I've seen the English flag and Scottish flag a multitude of times. 0:06 just blew my mind away and Im Australian.

  • What is the music for this?

  • I hate the asymmetry. It would look so much better if the Irish cross were in the middle.

  • @Drag0nfoxx it's still pretty symmetric you know, it has atleast i and C2 symmetry.

  • Dude, you are awesome. Your videos are quite interesting. Could you make more about America and it's history (esp. with GB)?

  • An excellent fashion reality show in the U.S. had a stupid challenge to their competing fashion designers to create garments inspired by the choice of five flags from around the world. The Union Jack, nor the Stars and Stripes were among them, but it got a group of friends talking about the most interesting/beautiful flags on the planet. The Union Jack was the popular choice.

  • @sheasf Well, unlike the US flag the UK flag is roughly symmetrical...a designer's wet dream.

  • @thunderhayes Symmetry IS pleasing, but I was surprised to see that the flag has a top and bottom. That has to be one of the elementary lessons in school, along with telling time. Hanging Old Glory confuses people because it actually has a front, and the front is different if it's hung vertically as opposed to horizontally. People get it wrong all the time (hint: the field of stars on blue always favor the heart...upper right).

  • They need to put a red dragon on it somewhere!

  • @Froggy711 Wales.....the runt of the United Kingdom ;)

  • i'm so proud that i kmew this already!

  • Press 3 for the state flag of Alabama disappear.

  • You know what, its seems like your the kind of person with whom I would get in a argument with and then later want to kill myself.

  • Prodan Mister Grey but what's the music used?

  • @CGPGrey Why don't the arms of the Saint Patrick's Cross match? I've always had this doubt.

  • It should be the Union Flag not the Union Jack - it's only a Union Jack if it's flying on a ship /pedant

  • @arn0lf1n1 That is a misconception about a misconception: according to the Admiralty both the term 'Union Jack' and 'Union Flag' are acceptable to use for a non-naval flag.

  • @CGPGrey That told me! I'll bow to your superior knowledge on just about everything. PS loving the videos (I'm working my way through them all right now)!

  • @CGPGrey It's more like just an acceptance of a misconception, rather than a misconception of a misconception.

  • @CGPGrey a misconception inside a misconception?!?! *gasp* misconceptionception...?

  • @TheCrasher92

Actually it's a misconception that a misconception within a misconception is called a misconceptionception. Now where did I put my pills?

  • @CGPGrey

Union Jack flew from the jack staff.. how many forts castles and houses have a jack staff. Jacks are smaller thus describing them as such. I don't buy your Admiralty .... they needed to appease a whack of sailors who mutinied ...they a;ll called it the jack as that was seen first when encountering a ship usually. Don't worry Canada will help the Throne beat some sense into ya. Colony style.

  • British and their lame kingdom.. bunch of enslaved subjects to the fucking monarchy!!! Smarten up idiots..

  • @SuperAmericanloser Oh and By The Way Britain is A. Not Lame B. The Monarchy is only got to do with some old kingdom stuff with the queen and such and C. I admit slavery is bad but its not here anymore. Do you think the whole Britain Slaves Just because you read that in some wikipedia? Ass hole

  • @SuperAmericanloser well that's telling us ay .....back to MacDonald s for you old chap

  • to impose their will, "") ..

  • his will and banishing the native of the region ... 2065 resolution .. kelpers not entitled to self-determination and non-native ... are settlers (sons of thieves pirates implemented

  • the most serious is not only the colonization of the people .. but the English denial ..... not only colonized america and africa and oceania .. colonized but also their neighbors, imposing his will

  • Way to forget about Wales and say its part of England...

  • @jamiesonstation At the time, Wales was part of England.

  • @CGPGrey Well~~ Wales was annexed in the middle ages, but it's always been a distinct principality of its own really.

  • Comment removed

  • @CGPGrey Which is the very reason I will never fly the Union flag.

  • @jamiesonstation I think we should stick a big red dragon on the front

  • @radioactivecakeX we really need to

it will be so much cooler

  • I like the song what is it?

  • @Tomasz0216 It says at the end. I think it was called Thatched Villagers, by Kevin Macleod.

  • I don't like how eglish people speak english.. I can't understand half of what they say!!!

  • @SuperAmericanloser Maybe Because your an no brained redneck idiot

  • @TheDashima The u.s hates the British!!! You fools are a bunch of idiots that will kneewl and kiss that bitch queen's ass even thoug she doesn't give one fuck about the her subjects!! Thats how lame the british are lol..

  • @SuperAmericanloser Number 1. The whole United States Does not Hate UK. Sure some Hill Billy's Red Neck's. But it turns out the More civilec'd American understand's What England is and what the earth is. But its Fat Prick Red Neck's that just think The US wins everything. Most of your countrys people dont even know where europe IS!

  • @SuperAmericanloser Ooops! jealousy is a terrible emotion and the US do not hate the British tell that to the thousands of tourists outside Buckingham Palace all summer, stop telling lies if YOU hate the British just say so, you can't speak for a whole country jeez comments are getting worse on here.

  • @SuperAmericanloser Nor can we understand you, my good chap.

  • @ThePianoNotes What the hell is a 'chap'??? Did you mean to write ChapSTICK???

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperAmericanloser

And stupid cunts like yourself wonder why the world hates Americans. Incredible that some of you can really be as stupid as your own stereotype portrays.

It's called English for a reason, idiot. (And it's spelt with an N as well).

  • @IAmCaptainMarvel Does it look like I care?? English is lame!!! I rather learn Spanish or French.. It makes more sence!!

  • CGPGrey = more then 90% of the reason i'm passing "World History".

  • Flags are flown upside-down on ships to indicate on board distress. Unfortunately, the difference between the upside-down/right side up British flag is quite subtle; it's not immediately obvious to the unfamiliar casual observer. For some flags, even if you've never seen them before, it'd be pretty easy to tell if it's upside down (designs might look upside-down). If you aren't specifically aware of the difference between the upside-down/right side up British flag, there's no way you could tell.

  • @MadeofAwesome4ever the scandinavian flags makes it impossible though =P There literally is no difference at all.

  • @RectumPilum It's even worse for the flag of Libya. Just a green rectangle. Nothing else.

  • @MadeofAwesome4ever Not any more. That was the flag under Gaddafi, but as he was over thrown, and he is also dead, he is no longer the leader, hence the rebels gave the country a new flag - and technically a new name. The name of Libya before the revolution was the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, but now it is simply Libya.

  • @RectumPilum It depends on how you turn it upside-down. "upside-down" could mean "rotated 180 degrees" or "flipped across a horizontal axis of reflection". In some instances, rotating the flag 180 degrees does nothing (English flag, for example). In some instances, flipping it across a horizontal axis does nothing (Scandinavian flags, in your example). However, the Scandinavian flags do exhibit differences when rotated 180 degrees, so I think that's how they'd turn it upside-down.

  • cool story bro but the kingdom of Wales isn't a part of the kingdom of England and although Wales isnt apart of the Union flag its considered a state of the UK just like Scotland and Ireland so yea ur diagrams are in accurate

  • @micheal89edwards It is now. When the flag was created Wales was part of the Kingdom of England. So this is accurate. Wales was part of the Kingdom of England, it isn't any more, so that is why its not represented.

  • An Episode on how the true collapse on the roman empire

  • most horrible flag in the world

  • @lapsiquisarcaica1

    fuck off prick

  • @01Ipsum chupame la pija otario de mierda

  • where did the irish flag come from what happened to the green and the harp or tricolour

  • @KevCahir That flag was from Ireland, and was one of the flags that was used for Ireland, until England barged into Ireland.

  • lol poor wales!!! they were just called england there

  • resolution 2065 onu

  • Countries and Peoples to find a peaceful solution to the problem, with due regard to the provisions and objectives of the UN Charter and Resolution 1514 (XV) of the General Assembly, and the interests of the population Malvinas Islands (Falkland Islands);

Invites the Governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to pursue without delay the negotiations recommended by the Ad Hoc Committee on the Situation with regard to the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to colonial

  • That's not upside down; that flag has 180 degree rotation symmetry. If anything, it's turned sideways.

  • I resent this, Wales isn't represented on the flag at all and as anyone born and raised in Wales will tell you we are NOT a part of England.

  • @SmokinAce1013 It was part of the Kingdom of England during the years he showed.

  • @adamcel6 Wales has had its own distinct identity since the 5th century and was annexed by England under the Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542...

  • @SmokinAce1013 Once again, Wales was "part" of England in the date he showed, since it had been annexed like you said. At the end of the video, there are links to 2 more videos. Watch the one on the bottom and he will say that Wales is it's own thing.

  • @SmokinAce1013 Wales is now a country but it used to be a principality and part of England, and the flag wasn't made until 1959, long after the Union Jack was made. I see no point in adding a dragon to the flag because it would just spoil it. The red cross on the flag represents England AND Wales, and always will. End of story.

  • @mrjumphouse the union jack is used at sea the union flag is on land

  • So Wales is part of England now?

  • @JazzMan5000 Wales was part of the Kingdom of England in 1707. It wasn't really recognised as a country in its own right despite the differences in culture, ethnicity and language between the two nations.

  • Slight correction but, it's only the Union Jack when flown at sea.

  • MIND. BLOWN.

  • this is the union flag. slight difference

  • @williefleete And LOADS of other islands

  • @pottergirl18 The union jack is used at sea (on a boat). The union flag is used on land (on top of Buckingham palace).

  • mind=blown

  • it's like 80% england and 20% scotland/n. ireland

  • Looks so weird upside down.

  • Union Jack is the name used for the flag when it's at sea i.e On a navy vessel

Union flag is the name for the flag when it's land based i.e Outside Buckingham Palace etc

  • the new zealand and aussie flag has the union jack on it too. cause the UK is awesome

  • Good video, can you also do one explaining why ireland separate in 1922??

  • WOW THAT'S HOW TOU TEACH HISTORY DOCTOR ! !

  • do you know the difference between the union jack and the union flag? (don't wiki it first)

  • @mrjumphouse it's only the union jack at sea (doctor who)

  • @mrjumphouse Different words for the same flag as far as I know.

  • @Wildifepro its the union jack when flown at sea and the union flag on land

  • @mrjumphouse What is it? I can't find any good explanations online

  • @pottergirl18 Union flag is the flag. Union Jack is the name for when it is flown at sea, or on a boat

  • @mrjumphouse Oh I knew that lol!

  • @mrjumphouse Of course ! A Doctor Who Episode told me about it ! :)

  • @Chiquicheeta To put it out, a Jack is a term for flags that are used for Ships transporting Goods, or maybe a vacation ship. A flag is a flag, or some item that identified a person, place, or thing. (There wasn't millions of fabric flags before the Roman Empire and the Medieval Times.)

  • @Chiquicheeta Thank god I'm not the only one who thought of that!

  • @mrjumphouse ...isn't the flag used in the sea? (at least that's what I remember from Doctor Who, could be wrong)

  • @mrjumphouse i don't even know what either of those are

    im an american :'(

  • @flowiepanda

theyre the same thing. and did you even watch this video!?

  • @HateRegime people are saying it's not the same thing, or at least that the two items have different uses.

and yes, i did watch the video

  • @mrjumphouse It's only called a union jack when its on a boat.

  • @mrjumphouse The union flag is the name of the flag, whilst the union jack is the name given to the flag when it is tied to the bowstring on a boat.

  • @XgEn9 *bowsprit

  • Always wondered why they made those red diagonals asymmetric.

  • Good, simple video. :) But I never really understood the flag behind the Commonwealth of England. Ireland isn't represented on the flag, even though it is on the coat of arms...

  • Most beautiful flag in the world

  • @Flamesofthunder no, but the one I'm thinking of doesn't exist any-more :(

    take your pick

  • Poor Wales lol they need to find a way to put thier flag in there somehow

  • I ask you to England to more than 14,000 km ....?? tourist trip?? fun? no no 1806 as invaded Buenos Aires could not be left with the Falkland Islands ... to try it then ...

  • Conquistadors my ass. America left Iraq with its tail between its legs, and still can't win the war in Afghanistan (after 12 years), and now they're thinking of invading Iran...talk about being delusional.

  • God damn dude you must have given the best power points in school.

  • Wales was not seen as a kingdom in its own right when the flag was constructed and was annexed with England. Therefore it does not appear on the Union flag. It was deemed not necessary at the time. If Scotland were to leave the Union, the black background of St Davids flag (wales) could be added to replace the blue saltire.

  • fuck the union jack we want our county's back!

  • @yiprajosie085 wow u must be a sad sad boy

  • UNION FLAG NOT JACK NURRRRRR

  • I had never noticed the corner stripes thing before o__o

  • Haha i knew that without ever being told, was this made for americans?

  • Without the Scots, there aint a Union, therefore to keep the union flag would be some sort of sad joke. Plus during war time, who the fucks going in first?

  • This must be a British channel. Hello from Canada! Thanks for the knowledgeable videos.

  • @05candyman except it's American. Suck it good and long,Canada!

  • @laputadetumadre11 OH. Well either way hello from Canada and you Americans know we are the better country. from legal prostitutes, free health care (have fun paying 100,000 for heart surgery) gay marriage and soon to be legalized marijuana. Yeh, your the better country, enjoy ur 7.50 an hour to our 11 and have fun with those religious zealots you guys call politicians, not to mention cleaner air, nicer people, less crime. we are like Holland north American version.

  • @05candyman "better" is highly subjective,we view you guys as a total joke and don't consider you guys a real county. You live at our mercy. Every day you go to sleep is because we decided not to butt rape you in the asshole at night and take over.

Greetings, and BTW, I love Canadian Bacon!

  • @laputadetumadre11 You didn't say anything to make your country even worth looking at. your economy is shit, your dollar sux, your country is full of racist conservatives, your government has started more wars than any country in the past 50 years. everybody in the world hates you, everybody loves Canada, your politics and laws are a joke, the only thing worth noting about ur corporate country are the amazing people that live in it, the intelligent ones that the cough* Aholes

  • @05candyman there there little girl, let it all out. Its ok to be scared and intimidated by the world's only superpower,a nation decades ahead of most of the world. But why so mad thoug? u mad bro? lol.

Say what you will about the States,we don't even take you guys as a real nation and are the butt of all of our jokes. You insulting us is like getting insulted by a whiny 5 year old. I can't take you seriously by the mere fact you are Canadian.

  • @laputadetumadre11 what is ur arguement, seriosely, i have stated the facts yet u act like a troll and pretend like i didn't say any of this. we are a much younger country yet we are sooo much better . dont take us seriosely, we dont take u guys seriously. the US is a joke. everybody hates you guys. i am done here cause you ignorant Americans are as dumb as toddlers, and all the shit head republicans prove that. enjoy ur last 10-15 years, before u collapse like a jenga set.

  • @05candyman I don't need to say anything to make my country sound great,it's the most powerful nation in the world and the world's only super power, what else can I say? It trumps anything the frigid piece of ice shit you live in.

You make 11 bucks an hour? I make 23. It goes up to 32 when i work over 3 days.

You legalized marijuana? big shit,I'm not a fucking drug addicted loser.

Legalized prostituion? I know you guys are fags that can't get pussy with out paying for it.

    good day sir.

  • @laputadetumadre11 What did i just read? Are you 12?! Oh, shit i didn't know, c ya...

  • @05candyman c ya pole smoker.

  • @laputadetumadre11 The most powerful country in the world? You have a great grasp of the English language for a Chinese person, well done!

  • @McAttack233 There are more english speakers in China than in America. Also,China has numbers. That's it. They are no where near good old U s of A.

  • @laputadetumadre11 have a look and see were 90% of the stuff in your house is made, even American companies eg apple & microsoft amoung many others outsource all jobs to Asia mainly in China. America also owe's China about 4 trillion dollars. If ye had spent less money trying to rape the middle east then ye might not be were ye are now,.

  • @McAttack233 I don't see the problem here. We are conquistadors and we control everything and everyone bows to our whims. Problem sir? don't piss off America or we will bring "democracy" up your ass.

  • finally an English pirate who admit they are

  • @dario2015 if you are good,be good. If you are bad,be bad.

  • @laputadetumadre11 and the only war that canada and the us got into was the war of 1812 and we won that one so suck it you bitch, oh and by the way we are much better. our country is much better than yours

  • @05candyman Actually i think its from the US as from the incredible poor view of the differences between the United Kingdom and great britain

  • @MrMudkipKing Oh, i just thought he has so many British based videos so i just assumed

  • very nice

  • While it may be acceptable to some to interchange the terms, a jack is a small flag on the stern of a boat or ship, so I will continue to call this the Flag of the Union or the Union Flag unless it is on the stern of a ship (or is that the back end of the boat?)

  • Now I feel stupid for not seeing that earlier.

  • Do you think you'll ever do a video explaining the giant mess that is Holland, Dutch, and Netherlands?

  • @originalglitch Well, Holland is another word for the Netherlands and Dutch refers to both the language and the people there.

  • @Wildifepro Wrong. Holland is the most populous of the 7 provinces of the Netherlands. Holland is 2 parts, north and south where Rotterdam, the Hague and Amsterdam are located (there are others such as freisland). The Netherlands is the political and geographical term for all the united 7 provinces and that is the official name. Dutch is the name for the language, culture and the people who live in the Netherlands

  • @eddieoxford Partly wrong. The Netherlands has 12 provinces (Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel, Flevoland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Zeeland, Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland).

Holland used to be one region a long time ago, but is nowadays divided into 2 provinces. Most of its inhabitants refer to the country as Nederland, but sometimes also use Holland, especially when alliteration is involved ("Ik hou van Holland", "Hup, Holland, hup!"), when it sounds better.

  • @originalglitch really, do yo know how the rest fo the Europe looks like ??

  • @originalglitch Explained for you: Dutch = The language we speak. Holland = is the not proffesional version of The Netherlands and often used during sport. Also people living in The Netherlands are called Dutch people.

Netherlands comes from Neder(land) what means Land onder zee niveau = Land under sea level. And the word Land in (Neder)land is becouse its a country. Your questions awsered? Hopefully, if not feel free to ask.

  • I'm also interested in the background music... strangely hypnotising.

  • It's the Union FLAG not the Union Jack.

  • @ajuk1 no

  • Where have I heard this song?? Top Gear?

  • I love that flag. Literally the best out of all the flags, personally.
