I weep for America(ns). I laugh at Fox News. I shudder at the fact that america is one of the most influential nations in the world, and can essentialy make or break it.

As a Canadian living in the USA, allow me to give my two cents:
Religious fanatics in the USA do exist. And they often spout a lot of nonsense at the pulpit. But the reality is, they actually do not influence decisions as much as people think. Whenever you see situations where they try to morph the system to their worldview, it almost always ends up backfiring. Whether its creationism or prayer in school, they talk a big game but the majority still keeps them at bay.
why is there a bunch of Canada vs. US arguing happening...both our countries are flawed...sometimes in different ways and sometimes in similar ways...if we truly love our countries then we shouldn't have this blind desire to defend them as the "greatest in the world" ...Bill is right neither Canada or the US is actually the greatest country in the world by a lot of measures... admitting this is the first step in taking action and working to make them great again, that's true patriotism !

Yes, we do laugh at those crazy people, but we're also worried because decisions made by american decision-makers influence the behavior of americans, and the behavior of americans has a strong impact on the environment, and we ALL share that environment, so the wellfare of the environment OUTSIDE of america is affected by crazy american decision-makers, and that's why we care what happens inside america.

Ehm dawg, we don`t have a national church. You must have us mixed up with the british. The protestants are quite a minority here. The largest group is secular ( around 45% ) followed by catholics ( less than 30% ).
And in no way is our queen the head of the state, it`s more or less ( although not completely ) ceremonial.
If anything, we are heading towards an islamic state, but thats a long way ahead. At the moment, most of our leaders ( parliament ) are non-religious.
Lets forget about the nonsence such as "in god we trust" on your money and "one nation under god" in the pledge. Forget about the political nitwits that proclaim their missions for god. Ehm dawg, we don`t have a national church. You must have us mixed up with the british. The protestants are quite a minority here. The largest group is secular ( around 45% ) followed by catholics ( less than 30% ).
And in no way is our queen the head of the state, it`s more or less ( although not completely ) ceremonial.
If anything, we are heading towards an islamic state, but thats a long way ahead. At the moment, most of our leaders ( parliament ) are non-religious.

i am from europe and i have the feeling, people like Bill Maher, who dare to open their mouth and tell how dumb and dangerous this religious fanatism in america is, are very small minority. And Maher is a comedian as far as i know. Are there no intellectuals in the USA?

Bill says he's embarressed when the rest of the world hears things like that? Not nearly as much as embarressed as the rest of the western world for allowing islam to take over their laws in the name of PC. Trust me- Europe through their own fault has bigger issues with religion than we do. Sweden recently changed their constitution, WITHOUT consulting the people, to allow immigrants from muslim nations to take government office. Every day Europe becomes less democracy & more like pakistan.

I personally wouldn't paint all Americans with the same brush. I reckon most are great people. But some of this creationist stuff sends shivers of horror down my spine, and Sarah Palin isn’t bright enough to be an office manager. What I find amazing is that some of the dumbest people are some of the richest and most powerful over there, how dose that work?
