  • make a new form of transmission that does an exelent job ,build in problems, dont supply dipsticks and make it hard as possible for people to work on it them selfs,

any reference to gearbox at all will include [ dealer only ] make it expensive very expensive ,worth more than the car make it a mortgauge job then call it a DSG:

  • Don't be too excited about the DSG. 7 speed DSG has a range of problems. And will break down more easily ... I have been driving a Scirocco for the past year. The box is not mature yet. VW has now quietly reverted back to using a wet DSG7 for its GOLF MK6. Dry clutch 7 speed DSG is crap. Read up the forums and see how many new GOLF and Sciroccos stalled on the highway ...

  • VW AG and its development and design partners (Luk, etc etc) should be congratulated on delivering the new standard in automotive transmissions. The patent on "nested levers" is a masterstroke.Efficient and satisfying. This is state of the art in automotive transmissions. Especially when integrated with automatic handbrakes to reduce the thermal demand of the clutch. Once again, Germany through VW sets the standard. "Das Auto" indeed.

  • Looks like it would work wonderfully for a few years, but its shifting is at least as complicated as a normal automatic transmission's, and having at least one clutch disengaged all the time would be hard on the throwout bearings. Also, how would you pushstart the car if you needed to? On the whole, I would still own a manual transmission. Still, I must say, what a marvelous feat of engineering.

  • I SEE THE MUCH LOVED ,..dual mass flywheel ,included , surprise ,surprise :)

  • oh id hate to replace these, i hear their shit. all ways breaking down in skoda taxis.

  • @bdeithrick maybe the problem is you use skoda as taxis :P

  • BMW forever :p

  • So, to ensure I understood correctly: with the new DSG transmission, the blue thing will glow thus eliminating the brake pedal resulting in a flat tire, then the yellow thing will ultimately cause the car to explode. Right?

  • I have the dsg in my 2011 vw gti and it rapes. It will make you pass out from the g's it's pulling. No complaints here.

  • golfs are fucking shit

  • more to go wrong

  • There are 6 person who didn't like this video? Go and buy a DSG-powered car!! You'll never come back to manual gearboxes!

  • @moddingpark they cannot afford it

  • @moddingpark yes your right about that, i knew that dsg is a good transmission, i test drove it and now i have one, its the best transmission ever, will never go back to manual

  • DAS AUTO!

  • wifes 1.4 seat has dsg ,problems start with no fluid dip stick so no idear of fluid level ,great for the dealership £130 to change fluid. got round that by buying a mtr of 3/4 tubeing and a funell drained the gearbox pan of excess fluid and took the pan off

cleaned it rplaced it run engine in park and filled with dextron untill it runs out of the drainplug .

  • @oobuc5 wifes 1.4 auto locks the drive for 1 second at 50mph [ scary ] did not dare do 80mph ,changed fluid cleaned the fiter ,still does it ,have heard they suffer a solinoid fault =£500 to put right ,the whole thing is designed to fail bigtime why does it have a pipe from the radiator keeping it hot? it also has a separate computer :

  • Wow, now I can understand why I sadly can't afford a Golf, the technology!

What a great idea to make 2 gear boxes in one.

Now lets hope it is reliable because some comments aren't that great.

  • dsg have alot of problems and this fucken company dont do any about that i have passat 2009 and i have problem when car move from d1 to d2 and the dsg cost 15000 dollar what i should do about this car

  • @dodo1702005 this is the same problem that early dsg,s have on warm up it hangs onto first then bangs into second its something to do the software in the ecu:

  • @oobuc5

correct, this is happening on my VW Scirocco now. Too complex ...

  • dsg have alot of problems and this fucken company dont do any about that i have passat 2009 and i have problem when car move from d1 to d2

  • @dodo1702005

if i could take that dsg [dog shit gearbox ] out and stick a c3 in i would:

  • My cousin just got a new Golf with DSG. He imports cars for a living, and has driven everything from Ferrari's, and Porsches, to BMW's. He absolutely loves his Golf, and he constantly goes on about how good the Golf is, partly due to DSG. He normally hates his cars as time goes on, but with the Golf, he loves it more every day. Im keen on test driving one myself now.

  • asdg

  • Awesome gearbox, much better than even CVTs since DSGs can handle more lot more torque. It seems Nissan and Mitsubishi agree to fit dual clutch gearboxes to certain models as they have trouble matting CVTs with grunty engines and even tiny diesel engines.

  • do you guys know the price of the replacement DSG transmission?

    12000 Euro

If you are out of warranty, be very careful!

  • @olimpicsa a 4000 pounds option costs 12000 euros for replacing ??? what is this world coming to?......for that kind of money you can buy a brand new car

  • @sharkdogeg

Exactly my friend, be very gentle to this DSG.

It is very fragile, and if you screw it buy a new car instead of replacing ;)

It has lots of problems like noise.

Check my video I uploaded the noise it does...

  • dsg is shit

  • @olimpicsa you forgot "THE"

  • go tell that to Ferrari, all their future cars will come with it, no manual for the california and 458 and why?? because it is FASTER, not as much fun, but faster still

  • you dont know anything about transmissions.

DSG is not designed for cars have more than 160 HP

  • do your research, the Ferrari California (which has about 450hp) and the 458 (which has 562hp) both come with DSG transmissions EXCLUSIVELY...

  • closed mind

  • @olimpicsa

    closed mind

  • closed mind?

I have audi A3, and DSG has problem.

My friend has the same as well.

Go and reseach on forums, all DSG7 transmissions making rattle noise on bad roads..

    and come and comment here!!!

  • @olimpicsa

    i have a vw DSG6 transmissions 140hp for 2 years:

    noiseless

    impeccable

  • DSG 6 works fine but high maintenance cost.

DSG 7 has problems with rattle noise

DSG 6 works in oil, DSG 7 is dry!

    I am expert on those!

  • @olimpicsa

yes y must change the oil to each 60.000 km

    7.2 literl oil!!!!!

  • true, in addition to that in case of a breakdown replacement will cost you more than 16000 euro

good luck with that if you are out of warranty!!

  • @olimpicsa

    Thank you so much

    so to you

  • @olimpicsa

CVTs have lower production and maintenance cost but have terrible endurance against high torque engines.

All transmissions have drawbacks especially for manuals, clutch can go lose, burn and slip (yes I know if one's stupid to let that happen) and for conventional autos, fins in torque converter can snap eventually which makes an annoying rattling noise.

  • @olimpicsa

I'm not saying that I disagree with you but if your car have a CVT then you'll probably grind to a halt since they can't handle such torque.... well in general. Conventional autos always have shift shocks no matter which road you're on.

  • I own a dsg and they it is the dogs bollocks. Mind blowing gear changing with the paddle shift and so smooth.

  • MAN, the brains it takes to make stuff like this just amazes me.

  • wow loooks nice

  • Sounds real expensive in years to come, 7 year old car with fail DSG = FAIL!

  • rtf

  • I own a '10 VW Sportwagen with the DSG, it's definitely different, but it works beautifully, the more you step on it, the smoother the acceleration is. This X-Missoin will shit gears in 8 milliseconds and I'm still getting 45 -51 mpg due to the TDI engine.

German engineering is awesome...couple this with a new "clean Deisel" that has basically NO particulate or greenhouse emissions and you've got an extremely environmentally responsible package that is still a rush to drive...

  • Sounds like an extremely complex component. I was lost in the words the narrator was trying to say in order to explain it. ???

  • guyz could someone give me info for gearboxes. i need info for my colegue project.any info, links.

  • dsg is not a automatic but it is a semi-auto instead since the gear arrangement are similar to manual, automatic on the other hand use planetary gear system

  • This is all good except when it fails on a Golf with 60,000 Km and then VW asks you for 8,500 USD to replace it. Then it really pisses you off!

  • I'm a great fan of manual gearbox, and for me it's still the funnier way to drive a car. But I must admit this is the only alternative I would take. Looking at pure speed, you just can't beat it, no matter how good you are, you're not better than Keiichi Tsuchiya, and he couldn't. And it's far cooler than CVT, which is like driving a scooter

  • man i have the same opinion like you :D i like manual but if i need to change it i would buy DSG :P

  • @dsito2 i just bought the Ibiza Cupra TSI 1.4 180hp DSG7 oh my GOD what a car what an engie and a gearbox system! semi automatic and padels for changes from the stearing while makes you feel like an F1 Driver!

i used to love japanise cars bu German cars are imho the BEST in total!

  • @dsito2 /test

  • @dsito2 if you ever drove dsg you won't like manual anymore ;) I'm driving it and it rocks!

  • Think shav4life has a chip on his shoulder!!

  • that dsg are best gearbox fastest shift ever,,..i want buy golf gti soon..please someone tell me..

  • im amazed something like this hasnt been developed years ago! Way better than an automatic transmission, as there is no tourqe converter to take away engine power, instead its all computer controlled

  • It does cost, but to me it's a knee jerk reaction as to the amount failing. Mechatronics is the most common of DSG failures. That can cost £1600. It's very rare for a complete DSG failure. My local Audi dealer has replaced only two mechatronics since DSG became GA. I can understand fold liking a stick but DSG it so much fun!!

  • Sav4life has no idea and suspect never even tried it. When I get in the TT, put in sport mode and change gear with paddles, Im really longing for a gear stick!!! hahahhaha I don't think!

  • He'a kinda got a point though...when a DSG goes wrong it can cost £4k at least

  • hahaahaha that just shows much of lesser man you are than every one else.

  • Now wheres the one that is light weight, easy to understand and would take less than 4653576237 + hours to fix.

  • would love to see the face on someone's face when their DSG fails. Manual will always be the best

  • If you like ancient driving styles then yeah manuals will be best, while the rest of the world moves on with faster shifting less fuel consuming gearboxes like dsg.

  • hahahaahah go save the world from global warming with your DSG gearbox which the factory probably produces 10 times as much pollution when producing these instead of manual. now back to proper discussion, DSG IS FOR GIRLS. if your a man then you need to get a manual. i guess you can't handle it.

i bet your the kind of person who has some super computer at home, an iphone, apple mac and a fucking toy that plays music in the morning instead of an alarm.

  • That dsg will shift faster than you could ever with a manual sir. Technology wins buddy.

  • i guess f1 drivers are not men, right??? since they use a dsg-like trans?

  • f1 drivers are nothng but rich kids with rich parents who paid for their £20000 f1 driving course. i know guys who could have being much better driver than most of those f1 drivers if they had the chance. and who said they are men anyway? they aint shit to me.

  • £20k for a driving course? LOL mate. £20k wouldn't even touch the sides.

When Montoya was racing in CART, his parents were paying $4m a year for their little boy to race. How can anybody take F1 seriously knowing that? It's not really a sport as there is no level playing field. That's why it sucks. Look at the mess it's got itself into at the moment. It's just embarrasing.

Oh and BTW suprrman818, F1 cars don't use DSG gearboxes, they use electronically controlled sequential gearboxes.

  • yeah, F1 is out of everyone's reach (btw, im Colombian, lol Montoya is Colombian. although he's a fag, not a nice person at all). but that's not why i'm replying... it's very common for people to assume that F1's use DSG, they are indeed sequential, good call.

  • way too confusing to shift by yourself. ill stick to my manual

  • Yeah putting the shifter to s and tapping it up or down to go up or down gears is most definately rocket science.

  • exactly, i wouldnt know how to do that :P, nah just saying that manual is better than automatic, or semi-auto

  • its just a manual gear box ... with a robot i.e. mechatronic unit controls it rather than the person ... the only thing a prson cant domin a manual or probably can in some gearboxes but usualy dont is readying the next needed gear and than engage it through a secound clutch ... other than that its a manual gear with alot of robot which if goes wrong all u can do is cry or pay the high dealership bills ... so i rather go for a plain simple old manual ...yyyyyeeeeaah

  • You appear to have no idea of what you're talking about.

  • What happens if it crashes. Sounds like a lot more technology also means a lot more money to fix. Are you supposed to buy a new tranny if it fails or just go to the dealer who will overcharge you? Am waiting to see what happens in the next couple of years with this new technology. I ll stick to my stick shift waiting to see if this gear box is a success.

  • Comment removed

  • You talk about the Bugatti Veyron, Lambo, Ferrari, well how many of them on the road, I am in Australia If I drive for 10 years and have not seen a Lambo yet, most cars on the road are Toyota, Holden, Ford and Japanese cars.

If you think in future the CVT, Auto and manual will be replace by DSG think again. You can have your opinion but you can not change people's opinion or interests. I think cars in future will have no transmission.

  • Nurbsenvi

CVT will disappear soon, are you sure? may be you like the DSG but not all people has the same interests, Just like people in Asia like to eat rice and people in EU like bread. USA and EU like fast food but Asia like restaurant foods. Not all cars have high torque, CVT is smooth and I love it.

  • this gearbox is not new at all. It was invented by a French military engineer Adolphe Kégresse in 1935. This is not a VW ideas or BW ideas as many people thought or mislead by the news. Believe or not the manual transmission we use today was invented by another Frenchman.

  • We have one of these in our new '09 Jetta TDI SW. The shifts are ridiculously smooth and responsive. I used to prefer a manual because of how laggy most automatics are, but this thing is the best of both worlds. CVTs might be more efficient, but they can't offer that immediate downshift response when you want to pass someone on the freeway.

  • I drove it in the TDI last night and it was terrible Its very jerky and has less power than the manual. Maybe the model I was driving was sitting on the lot too long, but there seem to be a lot of these comments on message boards.

  • the more electronic has a car the more expensive is... if u have decided buy some dsg´s car be sure have a proper driving technique or u gonna blow out your wallets.

  • Dsg, in my opinion is the worst gearbox ever made, i have a WV Golf GTI whit DSG and the mechatronik unit dosent work at 23.000KM, i have to change it now and it cost around 3000 euro. PS: Like me are many others how bought WAG cars!!

  • what is the name of the song at the begining of the video

  • infinetly variable gearboxs will be here soon, no shitty belts, pure mechanical genius - i have seen it.

  • Transmissions without a doubt are the most confusing part about a car. It always amazes me when watching these types of videos. I always go "How does anybody even think of something like this." 5 stars

  • Germans always think of genius designs XD

  • Just think of all the smart, white men who worked on this.

  • White power!!

  • word, homie

  • We gotta kill all the asians Hail Hitler!! Holocaust 2.0 FTW!!

  • i do respect the german engineers but

i personally think CVTs aslo good chiose when they compared to DSG

    just like your video

you make me understood DSG better

    keep going body^^

  • CVT is only good in theory... just like communism... best transmission is no transmission in my opinion.

  • yes,Er,i see your opinion better when we develop elec. only vehicles, yes, no need for trans anymore, but i aslo think CVTs are not only good at the theory, but aslo make our drive better,as it could help those who are not qiute interested in driving the car better, like famle populations(no offence to them as all,but somtims, you cant force lady to know the stuff more, but supply them with the right stuff)

  • CVT is more expensive to produce than DSG and can't be fitted to high torque cars the belt will just get ripped apart.

  • Er,based on my work experience, yes,i am a kidd, but the German car maker have bulit a belt could be used for 400Nm cars, maybe you mean more torque?right,

  • Er, based on my Wikipedia experience I know that 2008 Nissan GTR has 580Nm with DSG.

Maybe you should shut the fuck up because you have lost the arguement.

Learn to accept your defeat like samurai and commit harakiri now.

  • wiki could write by everyone, right,

please try to control your temp, gentleman,

  • CTVs are aslo developed by german enigneers by the 1930s,and the belt problem have been fixed by recently years,do you see a CTV transmission before,do you know how hard for the enigneers develop the CTVs,so why you want to delete the CTV on this world?

  • DSG is also developed by Germans in WW2 era.

Yeah, Wikipedia is inaccurate and the earth is square. Burrow your head in the send as you might

    But guess what?

Bugatti Veyron uses DSG with 1,250 N·m of torque.

Try 1250Nm on CVT it will snap in 12ms.

Stop acting like nihonjin and accept the defeat.

  • CTVs could supply a many gear ratios as you want(for the limited range),

    how can a DSG provide for us?6,or 7,even 8,

that is why you will lost when we want to save more fuel, mate!

  • I know what CVT is for god sake.

CVT IS GOOD but it will disappear before it reaches broader audience DSG will dominate the future because it's cheaper and it is as good in terms of performance/fuel economy.

Just like VHS and Beta max.

  • which was designed by VAG idiot

  • Fendt tractors put as much as 1500ft-lb or torque through their CVTs.

And if you wanna talk about stress on parts, you wont find much more than you will in one of those.

Their CVTs have been very reliable and hold up well to the power while using much less fuel.

However they use a mechanical/hydraulic approach.

  • And how big is this transmission in the tractors? can you fit it in one of those front wheel drive Golf GTI?

  • About the size of a golf.

But the technology can be transferred to smaller scales.

However since it uses hydraulics im not sure if it would be suitable for the automobile

  • Not good enough for performance though. Watch some of the Nissan 3.5 V6 cars with the CVT. I can accelerate faster in my GTI from 80-100 than they can and I have to shift at 85... They work well but not for high speed systems... Too much loss is the problem... If it was better they would use it in formula cars instead of DSG type systems...

  • Car Fan TWY, thanks for the great video..anyway can i have the clip?? Where can I download the clip? TQ

  • I drove an 09 jetta tdi with the DSG 6 spd and it was amazing, crisp shifting like a formula 1 car. The big question is how durable will it be?? Brilliant engineering though, basically adapting a manual transmission with a 2nd clutch and using computer solenoid controls for the clutch & shifting work.

  • Amazing. Have to say though, I'm still happy I got the manual transmission - only because it's fun to drive. Fortunately, it seems users who choose an auto transmissions don't miss out on the fun either. Yay :D

  • I love the motor in my 07 Si sedan. Just got a GTI with DSG is it is rad. Great companies with real world tech.

  • i still perfer sticker car......like my mazdaspeed 6

  • Always German tech.

  • Nobaody can touch German technology and engineering. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford... SCREW that they are only going to copy this benchmark technology, thats why I only buy German... VW, Audi, BMW, Benz, Porsche for Life. :)

  • Chink

  • im 1/2 german buddy, and none chinese, or asian for that matter, you're just dumb

  • How the hell am I supposed to know what u are??? and why go assuming I am nazi because I speak the truth??? Just because I say German cars are the best that makes me a Nazi??? Ur the dumb one here.
