There are already alot of American's playing in Europe. Last season, Fulham FC had Keller, McBride, Bocanegra, Johnson and Dempsey. Then you've Bradely at Herenveen, Demerrit at Watford, Cherundalo in the Bundesliga and may more. When the USA played England at Wmebley a couple of months ago, only 2 MLS players featured in that game. The rest of the USA team were all European based.

i agree with what you say, but obviously celtic are not near the quality of chelsea or real (or Man u the greatest!) so i wouldn't put them together, and also they were close of season so completely off form and out of shape. That's not a knock against MLS; it's no surprise that a young league w/ young clubs will have less prestige than leagues and clubs that have been around for close to a century or more. I live in the UK and the British media refer to MLS as a pub league. Therefore when MLS teams beat British or European clubs, of course MLS fans are going to gloat...even though these are friendlies. If you tell someone they are crap and then you loose to them, they are going to rub in in your face, which is what MLS fans have done and rightly so. I don't believe they mean any disrespect to Chelsea, Celtic etc and are not claiming to be better than these clubs.

There are already alot of American's playing in Europe. Last season, Fulham FC had Keller, McBride, Bocanegra, Johnson and Dempsey. Then you've Bradely at Herenveen, Demerrit at Watford, Cherundalo in the Bundesliga and may more. When the USA played England at Wmebley a couple of months ago, only 2 MLS players featured in that game. The rest of the USA team were all European based.

I disagree Edinburgh as I don't really care if Celtic loses a friendly, nor do most people. What we object to is that many MLS supporters think these are real matches so gloat over them, hence the problem. It's annoying to real football fans to have to hear friendlies made into real contests so it's really mostly about many MLS fans having a chip on their shoulder about the quality of the league. They have to point to these kind of games for self-esteem.

No, actually DC lost 2-1. We were up 1-0 in like the 44th minute, but then it was all downhill from there as Crespo scored a goal and then they capped it off with a goal in the 2nd half. But, you're right. We only lost by 1. We drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in 2006, though. Sorry, got off on a tangent. Wasn't trying to be a know-it-all.

They matter to me and other DC fans. I think that's the most important thing. Sure, you can push them off to the side and say that they don't matter. And, in the scheme of things, I guess they really don't. Every DC fan would rather win the MLS Cup or even the US Open Cup than beat Madrid or Chelsea in a friendly (including myself). But, it's still nice to know that you have the talent to play teams like Chelsea, Real Madrid, or Celtic close, even if are pre-season friendlies.

the MLS is not that far behind some of Europe. With the MLS's franchise expansion, the talent pool is going to drop a bit. It will probably be another decade before MLS starts to show serious improvement and can compete with the big dawgs (Premiership, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie, etc.)

European clubs have more tradition and, more importantly, generally more money available than the MLS sides. That's not a knock against MLS; it's no surprise that a young league w/ young clubs will have less prestige than leagues and clubs that have been around for close to a century or more. MLS is slowly but surely building its own tradition, and money is being invested increasingly into the game here in the States.

DC United has many players outside of the US. I was speaking on MLS teams not the US national team, but that you mentioned it. The Paraguay game we played our reserves and left our veterans at home.

Usasuckergol: To hell with you little prick. DC United can't even hold on to Adu wee man. Two of Celtic's players, Van Hesselink and Graveson cost more than all of DC's puny budget. This was a meaningless FRIENDLY, not the Champions league you fool. European teams play MLS sides for match fitness, to test formations, for exposure and money. Mediocre Celtic players like Kenny Miller were annoyed in this match as the DC United side treated this like the World Cup. Pathetic.

I play football, and any real athlete will tell you that there is no such thing as a friendly. Great players and especially pro players hate to lose if u think that Celtic loss on purpose or because they didn't take the game seriously...ur dreaming. If u don't believe me then what was the handball in the box and the red card tackle all about??? That kind of behavior doesn't say friendly at all!

Anacaona06: You must not know any real footballers then, as a friendly is a friendly which means nothing. Sorry you're ignorant about such things, but to put it into terms you may understand: if the Devil Rays beat the Yankees or Red Sox in Spring training does that mean anything? No. Get a clue pal. Man U lost to Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa in a friendly last year -- what does that mean? Foolish.

I'd like to see them have to travel to scotland to beat us, travelling takes a huge amount out of a team.
Miller?, sorry but does anyone actually think he's good enough for celtic? I know he was free and everything but c'mon! he was 6th favourite striker at rangers, thats where he should be at Celtic.
