  • I think Linux Torvalds is a very smart guy

  • To be fair, he didn't mention that the cheap hardware used in developing Linux by him and hundreds of thousands of other developers was made available by the popularity of Windows

Did anyone wonder how computers became so popular, and consequently, cheap?

  • happy bd linus@

  • the dislikes are the marketers of windows and apple....

  • Unix: Live Free or Die.

    LOL!

  • Consider how bleak computing would be today without the work of people like Linus Trovalds and Richard Stallman.

  • This Guy is Awesome. Nuff Said.

  • can some one post what he says for atleat 2 minutes im going to try but if you can can you tell me

  • love linux

  • linux has a great future.

  • Ahh, what a deliciously cheesy 30 second intro this has.

  • I have a simple guide on my page that shows you how to fix anything and everything with your PS3. Best of all, it shows you how to put Linux on your PS3 and turn it into a computer! Check it out if you doubt me (:

  • I like the story of linus and LINUX

  • @StrainPesteHotare Thanks for your comments in responce to my comment. All of them were interesting.

  • @StrainPesteHotare If you think about it, the Internet and Richard Stallman contributed towards making Linux to what it today is. I think without the Internet revolution and the GNU concept, Linux could never challenge Windows. What do you think?

  • recorded 8 days after the terrorists attacks? :

  • @BLUEEYESSEVEN Israel did 9/11. If you're so concerned, attack Israel.

  • Almost 10 full years since this talk..

His hopes, were fulfilled to an extent.

    Typed on 9/18/11 or 18/9/11.

  • Or also, you could call this "the birth of the entire internet"

  • HP with it's VAX were facing problems back in its time, a large company that couldn't create a kernel as good by one man, Linus.

  • @ShadowriverUB allows to make busniess, look at RedHat. And closed Software is not good for the Computer Revolution!

  • @ComputerHistory: be human, use a GPL license!

  • @ilikewebm world is driven by business and GPL don't allow to make business, there software that need to be closed source and it's even can be basis of it's functioning. Beside, everyone should have freedom of choose :)

  • @ShadowriverUB That soley depends one your business model. To say that GPL don't allow to make business is just silly, as company this minute do make money while using GPL software, it just takes a different busniess model. Wether not busniess drives the world is another question where not all agree :)

  • I am not artistic, at best replicate.

I am a mason. Brick, block, stone.

My daughter is older than this man.

I bow down to you for exposing your thoughts.

Thank you, your ideas spurred thousands of humans.

Looking forward to Linux kernel 22. +

  • Bill Gates and Linus should get together, alas governments would destroy 'em.

  • Linux needs best in class 3D for games - it will then dominate the world.

Linux Torvalds is one cool dude... his philosophy on evolution will bear fruit in the end.

I had a hard drive failure on a windows machine - windows recovery console could do nothing - I then booted ubunto, my first linux install, from a USB flash drive, and restored the partition drive, and saved the entire drive. I then played with it more, and simply fell in love with it...

Thanks a heap to the linux community...

  • i want to be a celebrated guy like him one day he is my programming idol

  • those who dislikes this video does nt know who he is. if u know him then you like him.

  • Spock and Bones together in a one person.

  • i love the warning @ the start ... classic.

  • this was absolutely adorable

  • can someone write what he said from 23:45 to 24? I didn't understand. :(

  • Linus Torvalds Meu idolo logo atras de Jesus!!!

  • help! we got a nerd fight down there

  • someone should edit together all the jokes he makes. Non-tech people will probably get a laugh out of it

  • Finland FTW

  • Excellent person he seems to be as smart and funny as well that the hour and 20 minutes were so fast and full of knowledge

  • @OmeCoatl323 So why not call some distributions something along the lines of GNU/X11/Apache/TeX/Perl/Python/Linux?

Give credit where credit is due.

  • here we have Linus Torvalds behind the walmart!

  • Correction: it's GNU/Linux.

Linus invented the kernel and combined it with parts of GNU operating system.

Let's give GNU some credit where it is due. Linus did NOT invent the operating system anymore than Al Gore invented the Internet.

  • A geek among geeks.

  • This dude is amazing he really is :)

  • I like how the start of this vid says the program can't be reproduced without permission... And there talking about FOSS

  • NERDS

  • lol my mom is goin to by us an abunta this week im so excited,

  • @heaheaheaa buy? and u :p

  • @heaheaheaa Epic troll.

  • Steve and Gates got together and made 10 accounts (since they were both using Vista, and Steve threatened to sue if Gates used a mac) and disliked the video.

  • @jamesschader, is it true that happened?

  • No problem!

  • TUX!

  • What was the third book he mentioned? K&R, Tanenbaums's OS book, and what's the third on Unix?

  • @HCHalst The Design of the Unix Operating System by Maurice J. Bach ISBN: 0-13-201799-7; it's one of my most prized books.

  • @demetrioussharpe thanks!

  • 19 people use Windows.

  • CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY MOST OF THE HACKERS PREFER LINUX OS?

WHY IS LINUX BETTER THAN WINDOWS?

  • @TheGprs69 try ubuntu in virtual box . no virus, evcerything free and compix xD

  • @SELG88 my question is that why are most of the people telling that linux is the best tool happened to hackers?

  • @TheGprs69 well linux cant get windows viruses..and it cant get spyed on by windows or mac viruses...and basicly there are alot of tools for hacking lol :]

  • @TheGprs69 There are a ton of reasons. It has to do with the sheer configurability GNU/Linux has, even compared to other Unixes. This leads typically to more security and flexibility. Also the fact that all the tools you need come with your typical distro.

  • @TheGprs69 because linux was born in the network while windows was created for the users. There is huge diference :)

  • Awesome talk and amazing OS. Thanks LT!!!

  • Gates and Jobs took their significant accomplishments in computing history, and tainted them forever with the base motivations of greed and power. That's why, in the history of computing, they will receive credit only for being the first, not the greatest; that honor will go to Torvalds.

In the history of capitalistic entrepreneurial accomplishment, Gates and Jobs will be revered as geniuses only for how to fill your own pockets at the expense of your customers.

  • @spongefreddie I'm a linux user, but I have to say that it was base greed that put your computer in your hands, and, I'll be honest, I couldn't say whether the cheap home computer or windows came first - but either way there was a profit incentive to advance the hardware and provide a point-and-click interface for the computer. There still is - until just recently the incentive to advance computer processing power has been driven by the gaming industry - more profit driven than hollywood.

  • 18:34 epic.

  • the holy trinity of computing gates, jobs, torvalds .. seems somekind of symbolic those different philosophies

  • "This video may not be distributed"

    oh man

  • I just hope the majority of viewers know the computer OS is GNU/Linux, because Linux is just a kernel. Give credit where credit is due. Linus Torvalds has done a great job, but he definitely hasn't done it alone. He had help from the Linux community and the Free Software community.

  • @youmakeitwhatitis also its not really 'gnu/linux' gnu is also just the toolchain. Maybe 'freedesktop' is the most appropriate name for what 'it' is.

  • @rhl6856 You have a point; GNU software can be replaced. And then there's also the fact that each distro has its own slight variation of linux. I would have to know more about software to even name it correctly. We can't really call them correctly anything other than Ubuntu, Gnewsense, Fedora, Red Hat, etc. without being slightly wrong, at least assuming you're right.

  • @rhl6856 Uhm, wrong. "Linux" is the kernel, GNU is the rest.

  • Thanks Linus Torvalds . I have been using Linux ever sense Red Hat 5.2. I have used Red Hat,Mandriva,Ubuntu and a few others. I avoid Microsoft as much as possible. My children use Linux as well. I have installed Linux for other people. People have often times told me that Linux is to hard to learn. Yet I have grade 9 at the most and I learned Linux.

  • @WilliamHBonney55 Linux is easier than Windows, that's a fact.

  • @WilliamHBonney55 Believe it or not, the first time I touched linux was when I was 8-9 I used VMware and fedora! I was so fascinated I tried to teach my parents and friends ever since, I got 2 people to install it since then and im 14 :(.

  • @739199 im 11 and i knew about linux at age 4

  • @74ryanwolf good for you, my parent's tried to keep me away from the computer but that didn't exactly work out now did it?

  • Or also, "Origins of Android".

  • @zedomax android i's just real small % of whole linux universe :p

  • @ShadowriverUB android is near 50% of mobile market, more than double iphones, i wouldn't call it exactly small % at this point.

  • @zedomax im not talking about mobile market, general linux kernel, android is just small point there, just look how linux is used on server and hosting services market, you can burly anything other then Linux, since for other systems you need to pay for. And why you even mention iPhone here that use Darwin kernel (fork of FreeBSD)? Android fanboy much? XD

  • @ShadowriverUB true, all my web servers run linux, but Android is getting bigger! Oh yeah, don't forget OSX is also pretty much linux-based.

  • @zedomax actully it also runs on Darwin, so it's FreeBSD-based, which FreeBSD is continuation of BSD which is clone of Unix same as Linux, this is main reason why it seems similar, is fact that they all unix-like

  • I wonder if that "one individual" he mentions at about 1:00 is Linus or Richard...

  • @TheStealth2727 Get a user-friendly distro. In my opinion, a distro like Ubuntu is more intuitive than Windows.

  • Linux is the best

  • Got to 0:33 and thought, "Holy crap, that's not Linus Torvalds!"

  • @ImTheBossTrapJesus Now now children. No need for name calling. He's obviously just uneducated on the subject. Try saying something constructive. Maybe point him to distrowatch or the websites of a couple user friendly distros.

  • Burn the witch!! I will reproduce this however I want, especially if it contains linux!

  • He's a KDE fan... !!

  • the part where he says the accident of deleting his minix partition is what actually made him start seriously using his own system is so gold.

  • Windows's bugged, Macs are worthless. Linux best OS but still not complete for the home user.

  • 34:30 face palm!

  • the only good thing about linux is that it's finnish :DDDDD

  • @TheBlacksabbathfan9

Linux is nearly the same as Mac...Mac OSX is FreeBSD, or a Unix-based operating system. Linux and unix are VERY closely matched.

  • @TheBlacksabbathfan9

Linux is nearly the same as Mac...Mac OSX is FreeBSD, or a Unix-based operating system. Linux and unix are VERY closely matched.

  • @TheBlacksabbathfan9 LOL mac is nearly the same as Linux....

    Think before you write something.

  • @TheBlacksabbathfan9 Macs have terrible file systems and are excruciating to program for.

  • 1xThumb Down. RMS For LIFE!

  • longest youtube video ive seen

  • @alind26 It is not the longest I've seen, but it is the longest I've seen for more than once and still I find it strangely sort!

  • Linus now works for Microsoft at their Portland campus...how ironic.

  • @douro20

No, he doesn't. He works at the Open Source Development Labs in Portland, Oregon. How moronic.

  • @douro20, it's not ironic, it's called selling out. (How pathetic by the way, I didn't know; or didn't pay much attention.)

I'm more of a *BSD and VMS (definitely the latter) person anyway.

  • Wow Ken Thompson was there, at 36:00. Unix creator, Plan9

  • yah. hahah.. :)) its opensource

  • The disclaimer at the beginning of this video ( 0:00 - 0:03 ) is very anti-Linux.

  • @mashiox

Computer history subcontract for Microsoft, hence you have to buy a licence before you view this video. :)

  • @mashiox ... indeed anti-GPL .... amusing irony, huh.

  • @mashiox

exactly what i think was going through everyines mind when they saw it

  • @mashiox

    No.

  • @mashiox: I wouldn't call it specifically, anti-linux. Its more anti-FOSS than anything else.

  • @LTS1287 We could go a step further and say that it's not anti-FOSS either. FOSS pertains to the software and mechanics that make the video play well. More accurately, the video is more anti-Creative Commons (Copyleft, et al.) than anything else. I used "anti-Linux" in my comment because the beginning disclaimer along doesn't parallel with one of the greatest things about the Linux kernel: free distribution.

  • @mashiox I think you're confusing Linux with GNU. RMS will strike you down!

  • @mashiox I found it rather humorous.

  • I did that, but on C64 when I programmed in MC. Never used a monitor for assembler, always hard code the MC with numbers in data lines with numbers...

  • everybody in the audience is so pale.. hahahaha

  • It is official: He does it strictly for the lulz!

The lulz brings great things, such as Linux!

  • He is better then Gates and Jobs!

  • @Darthvies he is right up there with the Woz, linus for software, Woz for hardware

  • @Darthvies

Who or what is "Gates and Jobs"?

    ^^

  • @Damatelon Gates = Founder of Microsoft

    Jobs = Founder of Mac

  • @itsJakeeeee

thanks, i know this already. But my comment should be sarcastic

    *soory for worse english*

  • @itsJakeeeee You mean founder of apple :D

  • @Darthvies He's atleast stronger than Chuck Norris.

  • @Darthvies absolutely

  • @Darthvies Probably not as good Gary Kildall, still. The designer of CP/M and the guy behind GEM. Rest in piece Gary...

  • @Darthvies It's stupid to compare them. Gates and Jobs are CEOs (well, Gates WAS one) and founded companies. They're businessmen. Linus wrote a kernel. He's not a business man in any sense of the word.

  • @j800r Gates is a programmer like Torvalds. Jobs is not a technical person.

  • @Darthvies if you referring to technical skills, then there's no doubt. But we can't forget Gates' Foundation

  • "...if you don't understand the problem on a source level, you shouln't try to fix it"

  • Without his glasses, don't you think he looks like the guy who played Arthur Dent in the BBC series of Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy? Well he does to me...

  • love ya........

  • Anyone remember the old disk sets (-: it got bigger and bigger.. but started quite small. long before 2001... early 90's it all first started.. now its really almost 20 years old.. where does the time go.. (-: Best wishes to all. Its a nice video, and worth watching.. I can remember snailing the floppies from the ftp in finland... now everyone has high speed internet.. I had internet in a community where people could not get good phone lines, those were the days... vic-20 and all...

  • @murraykj709 Oh yeah! I remember around 94 regularly travelling 2 hours by bus to the only computer shop in county that actually sold the CDs. Had to copy the images off the CD to floppies as my ISA card-controlled CD wasn't recognised! It was worth it though - 'a real operating system! On a PC!!'

  • nice

  • Very inspiring.

  • THANK YOU LINUS!

  • As an owner of 3 Sinclair QL's Linus makes me chuckle....! that black box got me into programming. As a linux user too, many thanks to Linus AND Sir Clive Sinclair. Great interview. 10/10 all round!

  • @Bealhorm 28th character, should be 73 not 78, you got his name wrong! But That's ok Karmari11694 should have had 01110011 instead of 01111000, basically the same error! But I agree it rocks!

  • @ShadyMan01 sorry, i sometime get the 0 and 1 confused :s

  • @Bealhorm No worries, just thought I would point it out!

  • 01001100011010010110111001110101011110000010000001110010011011110110001101101011011100110010000100100000010101000110100001100001011011100110101100100000011110010110111101110101001000000100110001101001011011100111010101111000001000000101010001101111011100100111011001100001011011000110010001110011

  • @kamari11694 Linux rocks! Thank you Linux Torvalds

  • Linux is better than windows.

  • ""Linus Torvalds, the creator of the operating system phenomenon Linux"" WHAT????

this men never develop an operative system, just the kernel. please try to put rught information and correct this mistake.

Another mistake, torvalds is not an icon of open source, in fact, he is against open source. The linux kernel has several lines of privative code, and he don't wanna publish that.

    bye!

  • @TheCadorna123 That's not entirely true. He wrote the kernel we now know as Linux, but he also implemented and ported many applications around it.

  • Gentoo is the best distribution out there !

You decide every thing ! - what kernel to install what packages you have on your system.

ALL the installation are specifically complied for YOUR specific chipset!

After the installation you will have the best/most compatible OS for your SPECIFIC system!

    Gentoo is all about performance.

The performance is unbelievable ...there is no other OS like it!

  • @aweinsto: Ahh gentoo and ArchLinux :) some great stuff those are.

  • I love Linux. I'm sad about the compatibility that makes me use Windows.

  • I want that shirt

  • @cobrachoppergirl Thank you for your comment but please don't include profanity in your statements. We welcome your thoughts and input but comments including profanity will be deleted.

  • he actually predicted the dual core pc, in 2001, if you noticehe sayed in 5 years (2005) there would be more cores in one CPU

    this guy is a visionary

  • @Zero86Sk wait!, how did they have operating systems if there was only one core?, that would mean you would have the os and nothing else, not even drivers!

  • @Zero86Sk He also talked about NUMA which current desktops are not (9 years later).

  • @Zero86Sk I had a dual processor PPro 150 and then a dual PPro 200 desktop in 1995 and 1996 respectively. I used the first SMP capable Linux kernels, as well as Windows NT which was SMP capable from day 1.

It was only a matter of time before multiple CPUs were merged into a single chip package and multi-CPU/core became mainstream, especially as clock speeds have stalled at around 3 GHz for mainstream parts for the last few years.

  • well seeing as you made many copy right infringement at the start, and that the fair use act would most likely apply i will disregard your reproduction warning: D

  • ti stimo linus

  • if im just starting righting code how where do i start?

  • @7Cz4Life read tutorials, books, etc.

  • the copyright message is ironic

  • Heś cute

  • Linux is so awesome! My desktop is totally Micrososft free.I have Linux,Ubuntu of course. Why would I ever want an inferior OS like Windows?

  • this guy is BOSS
