  • Man. This is why we love great horses. The quality of the vision is extraordinary. As a kid growing up in Australia, I always had racehorse posters on my bedroom wall. Phar Lap of course and my favourite a grey called Gunsynd, who raced in Oz around the time of Secretariat. But the Sea Biscuit back story is so compelling that I can't watch this without a lump in my throat. What a grand, grand champion he was. Thanks for putting this up. Bless you Sea Biscuit, Red, George and youtube!

  • This is absolutely EPIC! I love the two horse match races! that way you really do find out who is the better horse. Less chance of accidents or being hemmed in.

War Admiral was a dam good horse, so how good was Sea Biscuit to pull 3-4 lengths clear at the wire! its astonishing what that horse did there beating War Admiral on a going day.

What a race!! we need more match races in races, there fun and very informative as well as exciting! great video!

  • I must say that Sea Buscuit is a wonderful film but this is the first time I have seen this match race for real......my goodness watching that was awesome. They just went hell for leather all the way and the way Sea Buscuit powered away at the end was mightily impressive.

Thanks so much for Uploading this racing gem

  • "You either go home packing, or keep fighting."

  • i never fail to get the shivers from this. Incredible horses

  • @barnbrunette15 I agree

  • My favorite part is at 0:55 when they are matching each other stride for stride...Amazing!!

  • they look so darn fast!

  • i love this race and one of my favorite movie of all time!!!.... thanks for uploading this video....very historical, epic!!! love to watch it over and over again!!!

  • And Pollard told the Iceman to let the Admiral come up--because "Pop" liked to "spit in their eye"--and then just ask the Biscuit to go. You can see it happen. Seabicuit simply switches to high gear and runs away from the Admiral.

  • @syrynus876

That's true, he so devastated his stable mate by constantly waiting and running away from him in the practice races that the poor horse refused to come out if "Pop" was anywhere in sight. They had to move them to the opposite sides of the stable and close the Pop's doors when the poor horse was passing by because a mare sight of Pop was enough to upset him.

  • thanks for uploading this... my fav movie of all time !!

  • Awesome....War Admiral got owned. Seabiscuit, you are what fairytales are made of!!!

  • is it just me, or do horses from years ago seem waaaaaay faster than today's horses?

  • Poor War Admiral. Must've crushed his spirit.

  • TY for this post.

  • i as the 1000000th viewer but i feel there should be much more

  • THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST STORIES IN SPOTS AND LIFE !

MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME HANDS DOWN AND THE DOCUMENTARY WAS AWESOME. JUST TURN HIM LOOSE!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this great piece of history!

  • I read this book and it is one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. Teaches you about life, that even when you are born WITH SUCCESS AGAINST THE ODDS YOU CAN MAKE IT IF YOU WANT TO. IT JUST TAKE A LOT OF HEART AND YOU TO KNOW HOW BAD YOU WANT IT!!!

  • @greytoppy Afleet Alex...one of the greatest modern horses. He was lucky to grow up, let alone romp the Belmont.

  • lol its funny everyone of the worlds greatest race horses had the head gear thing on like Secretariat and seabiscuit

  • my god i thought they have changed the story for the movie... it's the same. i love seabiscuit

  • it's sad that Red Pollard couldn't be there, but he must have been so proud of his boy!

  • so is seabiscuit to america like pharlap is to australia?

  • @grimo000 Secretariat is the king of horses here in the states.

  • Had no idea they used to go without gates!

  • @Animonstar95 No, not usually. It was a stipulation of this specific race that no gates were to be used.

  • Thank you for the original video. Love the horses and the movie a real part of history.

  • The announcer the great Clem McCarthy....

  • @msjumpingqueenful This was a match race - one of the conditions to the race was a walking start up so no gates. War Admiral was notorious for being impossible to load and he broke from a walk-up lightning fast.

  • I love Seabiscuit!! Awesome!!

  • The son and grandson of the great Man O War !!!

  • Wonder what the jockey was hollering at the end of the race? My bet would be a little trash talking.

  • seabiscuit is my fav racehorse.

  • awesome!

  • Just watched the film Seabiscuit, that horse must have really inspired the American nation after the depression. Great film, very touching

  • Love watching these old horse races. They have a "magic" to them.

At the beginning of this video, did you see the massive crowds in the grandstand? It would have been great to have been there. Seabiscuit, a true champion for over 70 years and counting ....

  • I wish I was there ;)

  • Seabiscuit was truly a great race horse and an american legend. Biscuit was amazing horse not everyone saw it at the beginning but he just needed a chance. When i first saw the newest movie of seabiscuit it made me cry. This race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral made me cry. That horse was magnificent.

  • as good as the movie was, this real documentary film is so much more exciting.. and shows just how amazing that little horse was !!!

  • I'm glad that they outlawed match races after Ruffian and that other horse (can't remember his name). Those things are just deadly speed duals that were put on just for people's entertainment.

  • Geese, that horse is FAST!

  • wow.. awesome finish!

  • I will argue till i am blue in the face that Seabiscuit and not Secretariat is the greatest American racehorse of all time.

  • @lckt13 I agree completely! :D

  • it gave me chills

  • @JesusFreak97Love

    I know right:)

    Super Quick!

  • Wow, I just read the chapter on this match race in the book, it was amazing :D

  • No contest.

  • Happy Birthday, Seabiscuit! Thanks for continuing to uplift our hearts.

  • who are those 10 people who doesn´t like that video ... it´s s0 awesome how seabiscuit beats war admiral ... very great race and he was a soo great and succesfull horse ! wish could see him in a race ... our horses are just "saisonal" powerfull racers ... not such great winnders like biscuit or admiral!

  • All those people ran ACROSS the infeild, and still didn't beat Seabiscuit to the other side of the track xD

  • @Bloo445 lolz I had to go back and watch it just to see that. XDD

  • all the greatest things horse racing, music, actors, everything was years before i was born Life is so unfair :(

  • This is more exciting than NASCAR.

  • you cant write something like that

  • Did any of you guys nitice that one of wolfies stirrups was longer than the other? i mean, way longer?

  • The amazing thing is, Biscuit kicked ass, Everyone thought it would be the admiral, I love sebiscuit, not saying i hate the admiral as my horse Comet , Admiral is his great grandfather, and he shows all the admirals features, but Keno, his granfather is the superhorse Secretariat

  • bloody hell, seabiscuit has some SPEED!!!

  • some of this is from the movie notice the last quater mile fans on the rail

  • The best part is, most people thought it would be War Admiral wire to wire. West Coast rules! :D

  • sorry to war admiral fans, but the stipulations were all dictated by riddle, war admiral's owner, including the walking start, which favors fast starters like war admiral. both horses carried 120 pounds. war admiral drew the rail, the fastest line, ran his fastest time for 1 3/16 and seabiscuit still blew his doors off.

  • I think that it's so cool how a little horse like seabuiscuit could beat a tripple crown winner like war admiral

  • @Bluemare40 little? They were about, what, a quarter hand apart in real life? The movie makes a lot of claims in favor of drama that aren't true.

  • Seabiscuit was my young childhood hero. Now Man O' War and Seabiscuit and Secretariat.

  • How funny. they're both related to Man O' War. War Admiral is man O' War's son right? And Seabiscuit is Man O' War's Grandson.

  • @123Hawkkfire Or to put it another way, War Admiral was Seabiscuit's half uncle but was younger than Seabiscuit.

  • I enjoyed this immensely. To have the chance to view this match race, 73 years later, and still see the underdog vanquish the champion, gives me chill bumps. Thanks so much for sharing. I am going to watch this again, with sound turned up real loud, and just enjoy the action. It is very exciting to see, as the movie shots never did do Seabiscuit justice.

  • Thanks for uploading this video

  • You have to know that I love Zenyatta, loved Secretariat, but I have a special place in my heart for this beautiful creature, even though he was small, he never gave up ever, even after defeat, and that is truly a wonderful story, Michele

  • Seabiscuit is my HERO.

    His story is immortal.

Incredible horse, thank for being existed.

  • My Dad always talked about Seabiscuit. He loved the horses and always watched the Derby.

  • 9 war admiral fans disliked

  • tks

  • YASSS MON THE BISCUIT

  • WOW ! That was neat ! I read the book and it was described perfectly ! However, seeing the actual race on film is just like being there in 1938. This gives us all that were not even born yet an open door to the past. A real nice piece of American History for all of us to see. Thank You so much for sharing with us. 70bonnie 2/13/11.

  • And to think that both horses had Man O' War bloodlines. War Admiral was a son of MOW, and Seabiscuit was a grandson of MOW. Just for the record, it was Sam Riddle, the owner of War Admiral, who had a laundry list of stipulations, including the walk up start. Riddle considered Seabiscuit to be vastly inferior to War Admiral. Surprise!

  • if you read the book, on the home stretch seabiscuit would slow down to the others near him and let them catch up to him then speed up again. he did this to break their racing spirits :) xx

  • Wow, I always heard about these two horses but never seen the real race, Tahnks for uploading this! ^_^

  • Well, Seabiscuit's owner and War Admiral's owner both agreed. The fact is, Mr. Riddle, War Admiral's owner, preferred to do a Walk Start. In many of Admiral's races, Mr. Riddle had Admiral do a walk start because he was tempermental in the gates.

  • Now THAT's history!

Thanks for making this available. :)

Who are the 9 people who "disliked" this??? What's wrong with them?

  • It's hard to fault a race horse that well just loved to race. If you watch Seabiscuit he always looks like he is racing the horse next to him, always looking for a challenge from someone, anyone. he ran his best when he was being challenged... and that wasn't often.

  • What a treasure. Watching this made my day. Thank you so much for posting all this great race footage for us to enjoy.

  • GO SEABISCUIT!!!!!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video!! It's fantastic to be able to see the actual race! Thanks again!!

  • Great footage-thanks for posting.

  • We got a statue of Seabiscuit in my hometown where Tanforan racetrack use to be. He's the sickest horse ever.

  • This is why I love thoroughbreds... such heart......

  • That was the fastest time War Admiral ever ran at that distance. A clean match race, no question which horse was better.

  • @Fireform257 Wow, I didn't know that. 'Biscuit really dusted him.

  • Ancient Treasure!!! God bless YouTube!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this Seabiscuit was a amazing horse!

  • Then Seabiscuit showed the humanity is not a small horse. He has defeated his ancestor War 'Admiral. Do you remember how the owner War'a Admiral said, "What to compare these two horses?". And on the track Pilmico Special turned out that compared them to victory. And who won?. Of course, the quickest.

  • Yay seabiscuit won :D

  • I worked for years at Rockingham Park in Salem, N.H., and galloped/exercised these magnificent animals - on early mornings, hearing only your breathing, and their snorts, is a bonding memory I will cherish to the day I die.

  • why there are no more horses like seabiscuit or ruffian??? B(

  • hahaha all those people running across the infield thinking they'd get to the other side before the horses did!

  • We can debate back and forth about who was the better horse. The bottom line is this race was incredible no matter who won. Glad to actually see footage of the race.

  • seabiscuit is the winner!

  • one of the most legendary race of all !

  • According to Hillendrand Geo Wolfe says "So Long Charlie" at the top of the stretch. But what does he say after passing the finish line?

  • See how the new Secretariat movie does? Its been out two weeks now and has early almost $ 30 M.The movie on Big Red should have been made years ago,not 38 years later.

  • Wow Seabiscuit has amazing speed!

  • Never expected to see the actual race- I have seen the movie several times. Thanks for posting this, it's awesome!

  • Seabiscuit was one tough little horse but in the grand scheme of things, he doesn't rank among the very best of American dirt horses. War Admiral's jockey made a huge tactical mistake in this race by trying to rush past Seabiscuit much too earlym which gave the little horse something to aim at. Had he shown more restraint and patience, he could have unleashed War Admiral with one furlong to go - and would have most probably won the match race.

  • I agree with the announcer, Seabiscuit owned the race from end to end. War Admiral had plenty of time to overtake Seabiscuit and Seabiscuit literally continued to pull away from him in the last part of the race all the way to the finish line. Another day, another race, War Admiral may have won but that race belonged to Seabiscuit.

  • seabiscuit and american legend with a canadian jockey

  • you go Biscuit, go !!

  • They run for quite some time, i really dont think a small rear at the beginning can determine the outcome of a mile long race.

  • this is sooo AWESOME to see the actual footage in 1938 i am truly shocked !

  • Go biscuit Go!

  • I have seen the movie seabiscuit, great movie. Id love to see more of this old school footage. However being a aussie we cherish our phar lap.

  • THANK YOU cf1970

    :D

  • What a race! War Admiral of course was no slouch! ls

  • They put blinders on Seabiscuit so he could run faster. That helped him let go of support sideways and reach for God instead.

    OMG, could that horse fly!

  • No excuses , Sea Biscuit won fair and square..

  • Actually despite War Admiral rearing they still set off at the same time! Sea Biscuit was just faster at starting off! And still it didnt matter he won by a good bit anyway!! They're both amazing horses though!! :)

  • Biscuit was pretty tough on the lead.

  • What a horse. Like Wolff said, he made a rear admiral out of a War Admiral.

  • Wow, I go to Pimlico a lot, and it surprises me how much i recognize everything.

  • Rip to the greatest horse ever born.

  • I loved the way the crowd tries to run along in the infield.

  • seabiscuit: greatest horse ever to be made. hands down.

  • he's amazing i love him!!

  • how come jockeys back them didnt stand up so high as they do now ....these jockeys are slouching ....i dont understand it.

  • @OblivionSs4 these jocks ain't slouching! they are CROUCHING! the lower-down in the saddle you are the less wind resistance = more speed, plus they have more rein control. gotta give it to the yank jocks, they are the best in the world at riding so low in the saddle.

  • It' so incredible how fast these horsers move! It was quite a close race, though. LOL, take that War Admiral!

  • 2 legends

  • I read Laura Hillenbrands fantastic book a few years ago, and it was a real page turner. I felt like I was on "the Biscuit's" back riding in each race. Never thought I'd actually get to see his races, but thank god for YT. Thank you for posting this historical footage for us youngsters who weren't there to witness history being made. Magnificant animals! Love you 'Biscuit!!!

  • it was War Admiral's owner who asked for the walk-up start...

  • "The Ice Man" sayeth....."So Long, Charlie!.....Y'AAAAAH!!

  • Waw I didn't know this was recorded!

  • Two horses great champions.

  • Omg !! I love Seabiscuit and my horse :D

  • Seabiscuit is a california legend! we got a statue of him in the Tanforan Track landmark here in San Bruno.

  • Hi! I'm doing a research project on Seabiscuit, and i was wondering where you got this video (and the Ligaroti match race video) and/or if I could use them? Thank you!

  • @athenamarie34 Go ahead. I don't own this footage, so anyone can use it.

    Good luck with your project.

  • @athenamarie34 For your research project, you may want to look up where Seabiscuit's shoes went. I believe that at least one of them ended up at Iolani High School in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The locally famed high school football coach there, Fr. Bray, like to use it as an inspirational device for his teams.

  • can i use this clip for a video please?

  • @hunterjumpersgirl Sure, go right ahead.

  • Wow that was the best.

  • So long Charley!!!

  • Put out to stud, Seabiscuit sired 108 foals, including two moderately successful racehorses: Sea Sovereign and Sea Swallow.

  • Seabiscuit was a stallion, read the book about him.. it says hes a stallion right in there and the howards bought a filly (a filly that raced with biscuit at a race and she got 2nd and they were impressed with her) so they bought her to breed her to seabiscuit after her racing carrer was done..

  • War Admiral's owners let Seabiscuit's owners put too many stipulations on the race, IMO. War Admiral's owner should have never agreed to a walk up start. If you'll notice closely, War Admiral reared when they were told to go. I like Seabiscuit. Very game horse. But I've always believed that War Admiral, top to bottom, was the better of these two horses. If they raced a normal match race 10 times, I'd bet War Admiral to win 7or 8 of 10 breaking from a starting gate. TJMO.

  • @GBeret83 According to Hillenbrand's book, it was actually War Admiral's owner, Sam Riddle, that chose the majority of the race stipulations, including a walk-up start.

It's a great read, check it out.

  • @cf1970 is correct and even in the movie they said it was War Admiral's owner that wanted to walk up starting gate

  • @cf1970 I read Hillenbrands book, its great yeah. This little horse rocked :)

  • @cf1970 according to every bit of information i've ever found, it's true that War Admiral's owner had pretty much all stipulation's to his liking. including the bell start.

  • @cf1970 Agreed ... I am reading right now for the second time ... it is a great read with tons of details the film could never address ... War Admiral's owner set the majority of the conditions.

  • @cf1970 Yeah they did the walk up because War Admiral didn't like the gate.

  • @cf1970 Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this wonderful film clip. I am so appreciative of being able to see actual footage from the races of these great horses from the past. As they say, a picture is worth a 1,000 words. And this clip shows two great horses running and competing side by side. How thrilling to watch!! They both had heart and were certainly champions. On this day at the finish line though it was the Biscuit beating the Admiral. No excuses. What a race!!

  • @cf1970 I am reading that book as we speak and I think you are correct.

  • @cf1970 Correct. War Admiral did not like starting gates, so Riddle stipulated a walk up start.

  • @cf1970 yeahh ive read this book. tbh it is probably the best book ive read and i dont think there would have been a horse to beat seabiscuit :) x

  • @cf1970 You are correct, it was Sam Riddle who wanted the walk up start.

  • @cf1970 i loved taht book and yeah they had to do that with War Adrmiral cause he was a terror in the starting gate!!

  • @cf1970 yeah i loved that book....they did that for War Admiral cause he was awful in the strating gate

  • @cf1970 GREAT book!!! And yes according to the book Riddle set most of the "rules" for the race, Howard just wanted Biscuit to race against the Admiral to prove he was the real "Horse of the Year"

  • @cf1970 The better book waqs the first one: COME ON SEABISCUIT, a tiny paperback from 1975.

  • @GBeret83 In the book they specifically talk about War Admiral's distaste for starting gates. It was Riddle who asked for the walk-up start.

  • @GBeret83 yes war admiral reared but that has no bearing considering he caught up with sea biscuit and were head and head. he caught up in no time.

  • @GBeret83 - The best horse won. I'll bet you would have lost money over any series of races between them. The poster is right, the rules were mainly laid down by War Admiral's owner to suit his own horse. Biscuit won going away, regardless of the start.

  • @prescient8

I have to agree with GBeret83. War Admiral was a legend, lets not forget a triple crown winner. He won 21 of 26 of his starts. Seabiscuit won 33...Out of 83. Who knows what more Admiral could have accomplished if he wasn't retired so early. He was simply amazing. I think the phrase "Like, father, like son."- Fits nicely here.

  • @GBeret83 The other comment is correct. War Admiral's owner ducked Seabiscuit for a long time. War Admiral was pulled from races to avoid running against Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit's owner said "anytime, anyplace" so often that War Admiral's owner HAD to finally race. He was the one who laid down all the specific rules (including the walk up start & the insistence on their home track). On paper, War Admiral should have won. But on this day, Seabiscuit had more heart

  • @GBeret83 Seabiscuit was the better horse in that race.

  • @GBeret83

I don't know if the Admiral would have won if they would have raced again. In the book, "Seabiscuit," George Woolf is quoted to have said that he saw the Admiral break down during the race. He even said that he felt bad because he thought that War Admiral would be completely broken after the race and would never go on to be what he had been before. War Admiral pretty much panted and limped off the field while Seabiscuit played happily in his stall not long after.

  • @Marian12c when they mentioned "break down," it was similar to the "broke his heart" line in the book. he shattered and was unable to, no, unwilling to catch him.

horses are crazy animals, we have to give that to them, but the few emotions they have often run very deep n_n

  • @GBeret83 A horse can rear up in the starting gate as well as starting gates can malfunction, even causing injury that can go undetected until the race is over. It is true that Sam Riddle chose the majority of the race stipulations and I am glad that there is a reference below. Additionally, you could see that Seabiscuit had somewhat of a moving start however the distance he won by could not have been closed by War Admiral even with the use of a starting gate. Everyone's entitled to opinions.

  • The race was a mile and 3/16. A slight edge, if one actually occurred, at the start; is irrelevant. Seabiscuit won going away by 4 lengths.

  • I'm "only" 50 vears old, but the story about this horse is amazing.

  • Thanks SO much for this post. What a piece of history! BTW, the book is to the movie what The Biscuit was to War Admiral. I'm no horse race fan, but the book was one of the best I've ever read. If you've only seen the movie, you HAVE to read the book. You won't regret it.

  • That's what I call exciting!

  • wow, this generation will prbly never see a great horse like this, its sad realy.

  • "I saw something in the Admiral's eyes that was pitiful. He looked all broken up. I don't think he will be good for another race. Horses, mister, can have crushed hearts just like humans."

Seabiscuit's jockey George Woolf said this after this race that would become one of the greatest races in history between two of the most outstanding horses of all times. He was so right with it.

  • Wow it must have been great to witness that race between 2 great champions..

  • On apelle plus ça un cheval mais un bolide!^^

  • Oh. My. God. I just finished the Laura Hillenbrand book. It's amazing actually WATCHING the actual race!!! :D

  • Seabiscuit was a very viable stallion. His owner called Seabiscuits' children "Little Biscuits".

  • this is the horse that not run from fight a truly champion among champion
