He is a French soldier, and certainly from French Polynesia according to his face. Moreover his friend has the black beret, symbol of the Marsouins (their nicknames), the Legionnaires have a green one.

Hardworking and hardfightning men can be from any part of the world, such exist everywhere.

It is French fighting force, since they are training in France, fight under French flag, France provides their gear and most of all, training and traditions are French. It's not sad, you can only admire it, there are not many countries that can train and inspire men, and have soldiers that are not their own, willing to fight and die for a foreign country.
