No, they don't have to. They may not have the equipment to do so. For someone learning to make jewelry, it is best they start with bought rings. Also, where would one draw the line? Why not draw the wire as well? For example, many jewelry artisans work with gemstones that have been cut and polished by others ( lapidary artisans).
Awesome video. Thank you so much. I've just started my chainmail projects, have done it with copper and II just love doing them. I'll definitely try this full Persian. Thank you so much for making it so easy.
All of the other videos start out with three sections, then you're suppose to squash them together and put in links who knows where. Your technique was amazingly easier! I got it right away. If there was a chainmail teaching award, you would win first prize!
I have looked at a lot of video Tutorials and I was never able to make the full persian chain maille bracelet until I looked at yours. Thank you so much. Do you have a tutorial on the half persian chain maille bracelet?
I love this! Where do you get your jump rings? I want to do this using black and silver rings, but I'm having trouble finding both colors in the same size/gauge for a decent price.
I have been trying to learn this weave forever, but could never figure it out! This video shows how to do it without any complications. It took me a few tries before I got it, but I got it!! LOL Thanks a bunch for sharing this! :o)
Try Tool Magic. It's a coating you can apply on your tools. Some jewelry artisans like it as it cuts down on tool marks on wire. You can purchase it from many jewelry supply stores.
I personally don't like the anodized aluminum for precisely that reason. I usually stick to copper, brass, bright aluminum and silver. But I agree the color range is limited.
wow thanks for the great tutorial =) i have been trying to do this pattern for ages and i only just found out what it was called =). do you reckon you could tell us how long it takes you to make an entire bracelet or neckalce??
I just started doing chain today, and using 18ga 1/4in ID its taken me about a hour for 4 inches. but im new and slow and trying not to scratch my anodizing.
Nice job! Couple differences to the way I do it - I hold pliers upside down from you (right hand/bent nose) and pick up rings with pliers. I begin with 2 rings through 2 rings, then add a pc of twist tie or phone wire through middles of all 4 rings - and twist the wire ends to hold these 2 pair together. This holds the 2 pair cross-wise to each other, setting up the pattern for addition of more rings. rest is the same. Nancy B
I agree about the bigger size. I have lots of 4mm rings and they are just a bit too small to accomplish this task. I get half way through the first bunch and the rings won't budge. Can't wait to get the bigger size rings to begin this one. The project seems pretty easy though.
Brava! Beautiful tutorial! I've been doing maille for several years but the Persian was one I couldn't grasp until now. Thank you for sharing! *smiles*
So awsome! I am a show me type learner, and have bought some videos from Spider (great teacher) BUT..... The way she shows how to do the full Persian I just couldn't get the hang of it. While buzzing around on the internet I happened to click on your tutorial and the way you illistrated the tenchique I can now say with a BIG BIG smile that I can now do the full Persian!!! THANKS SOOOOOO MUCH. :)
Excellent!! Thanks so much for sharing this video! I'd done this weave from some printed instructions, but couldn't remember and was having a hard time figuring it out again. Your video made it so easy!!
I've done the full Persian (fox tail) before and keep forgetting how to start a new chain. This video was great and the easiest to follow. The twist ties made the world of difference.
I just started chainmaille this weekend and have looked at a bunch of videos and website instructions. Yours was by far the easiest. I made a full bracelet! and am starting another with a smaller mm. I hope you do some more videos. The twist ties are a life saver!!
I've been hesitant to try chain maille, however, ran this tutorial on my iTouch so I could have it in front of me, could pause, rewind and play, and YAHOO - I CAN chain maille. Turned it into a lovely bangle watch! Thanks, and maybe another instructional video on the byzantine pattern?
Ah, if you check out the accompanying photo and text tutorial on the blog post, you will read that I know I did this with a certain gay abandon on closing the rings - this is after all an amateur video. It's mainly about instruction not finesse and the information here is freely given.
There are many ways to do weaves, this is but one more for the FP. One I might add, has been successfully taught to a number of people. I look forward to seeing more versions on Youtube.
But you didnt close your rings enough you got gaps! should have brought them back and fort couple more times working the gap more closed. And full persian is related to box chain so start it like boxchain and then when you would add your two to flip the two rings open in box put ring on and flip it back and go thru the v that points back to the starting rings.
Check out spiderchains dvds much easier way to do this!
Thanks! Please do check out the blog post which gives the text with still photos and makes things clearer.
The video doesn't have a voiceover. I'm not that experienced enough to do both the orchestrated manouveres AND a script! Someone did tell me they would find a voiceover too distracting.
This would take fucking ages and I know I would get fucking confused.
Classic chainmail is fucking easy.

I think if someone claims to "make" jewelry, they should also make the jump rings as well.

Very helpful. no matter how hard i try, my pliers remove the anodizing on aluminum, are there special pliers that have protection on them?

If you use big rings (18G 1/4") like I do, the project works up quickly. A bracelet should take about 2 hrs for a beginner.

I agree, very well demonstrated. After watching this video I grabbed my box of rings, opened them, and after 5minutes have made a 10cm chain.
How do you deal with the ends of it when adding a clasp?

Nevermind. Having a decent look at the finished chain answered that question.
