Should Christopher Nolan Reboot Superman?

As a Brit, I find Superman hard to relate to; he's a very all-American, nationalistic, borderline-jingoist superhero in origin, and has had to evolve with time. I find the same problem with Captain America; the best superheroes are universals. I can see myself in Batman, or Spider-Man, even Wolverine, but as a reader, I know I will never have any connections with Superman (too powerful) and Captain America (completely different values).

I am one of those ppl that just cant stand superman bc i dnt see how he can be a hero and can carry out a fight with someone who doesnt have magic or kyrptonite bc he is too super to deafeat if you dont have those two!!! So to me it gets boring with me.

I don't know it if Brandon Routh was the only good thing about superman returns. IMO he wasn't good or bad. I did like Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor tho. And if someone could do it right I would love to see General Zod again, not quit sure who could pull it off right tho. I know you guys don't agree but I think it could work.

Im sure you guys have heard by now that Christopher Nolan is know longer doing the Superman franchise lol (I know right another director washes his hands of it). I think we should just put Superman to bed once and for all I would really like to see a superman film but to be fair I think DC's animated movies featuring Superman will have to do. Which brings me to another point I really want to hear Angry Vince comments on Lex Luthor lol. I never understand why film directors choose him either lol.

These guys make interesting points, however, they missed ONE important fact; Bryan Singer's Superman Returns was a direct sequel to Richard Donner's Superman II ... not the THEATRICAL version, the version Donner was not allowed to finish. That's why Routh was acting like Reeve's Superman-that's who he was playing. Watch SR special features and the prologue of the film explains this fact.

Not to sound rude but Vince you are dumb. Brandon Routh did ZERO acting in that fucken film. He sucked balls as Superman. He was mopey and whiney.  Every scene he was in he was completely upstaged by everyone. Even in "Zack and Miri make a porno" again Brandon Routh brought his 'wooden acting style' and yeah Bryan Singer even admitted the only reason he chose Routh was not based on his acting ability (or lack-thereof) rather he only chose Routh because he apparently resembled Chris Reeve.

@laddie86 Script and director. SCRIPT AND DIRECTOR. The problems you listed that you had with 'Routh' were the fault of the script and the director. SR wasn't a 'Role-Play' it was a SCRIPTED FILM. It wasn't Routh's fault that his character was semi-out of character.

Same with Zach and Miri (though I heard he had a fairly minor role). He was awesome in Scott Pilgrim.

Yes, I think Nolan is a great storyteller. He really brings plot to movies. A Superman film with a plot is exactly what I want. Watch Inception and The Prestige. Very well done.

Wait u claim the reason Superman Returns was bad is couse is was too much like the old series... Its technically PART of the old series... and as a HUGE superman fan (me and my freinds r gettin Justice League class rings for graduation) i like superman Returns yeah it could have been better (ehem no fight scenes ) but it felt like a kind off set up film kind of lile Batman Begins did for me and that the next would be better... Im all for Nolan tho he should do every superhero movie :-)

In the "Chuck vs The Mask" episode, Chuck debates between his two loves, one Sarah and one Lana Lang from Smallville, while Superman from Superman Returns puts the moves on Sarah.

Also, Lana Lang's put in danger as terrorists capture her in the Power Rangers Command Center!

Christopher actually isnt even directing it, hes just gonna be there kinda guiding it so to speak, his brother is actually working on the script, and i heard Warner Bros is soo excited about it because their coming at the Superman story in a way never been done before...i think they should finally get rid of Lex for now, at least untill they make him more like the cartoon/comic version, and bring in Apocalypse, or Darkseid or Brainiac!!!!!

Yeah, I just mean that most of the people I hang out with really hate the character of Spiderman while loving Superman and Batman. They also want a Superman/Batman type movie once the individual movies are done. On a personal note, I happened to have liked Superman Returns and thought that they should have gone ahead with a sequel. No, it wasn't perfect but neither was Batman Begins. Now that movie was weak. Heck, Superman Returns beat it in overall box office success.

@Geekvolution I believe that Chris Nolan and Zack Snyder should reboot Superman because Superman 3 and 4 was nowhere to be found in DC Comics. Where would you see a drunken Superman in the 3rd movie? Or how about Nuclear Man? He was never featured in the DC Comics.

The people that only know of the superman from the resent movies and TV shows have the idea that Superman's only enemy is Lex Luthor, and his only weakness is to kryptonite.

As for the public thinking that his only enemy is Lex, I guess Snyder and Nolan will be fixing that notion, huh? This movie is going to be awesome and bring the masses back to the Man of Steel. It's funny, but he is the character that started it all and he still sells the most comics along with Batman (both DC franchises). Supes popularity hasn't diminished one bit.

The general audience is tired of the over use of slow-mo in movies, and I could see how many potential Superman fans would be turned off by the movie because of over used slow motion.

@proboxershotgunner Personally, I would not like the slow mo effect. If he uses it, I hope it is sparingly. I just think it is way too gimmicky. He didn't use it as much in Watchmen that he did in other films. It should be a really good movie though, especially with Nolan on board to oversee everything. He won't let the film suck and I believe that if Snyder starts using those stupid gimmicks, he will step in and give him a "WTF????"

@SuperRocky1978 Watchmen used slow motion though out many scenes in the move, which is not what one would call sparingly. I don't want him to use any of his usual Snyder gimmicks at all in this movie, especially slow-mo.

The solid answer to the question is... yes. Superman. Arguably the best super hero of all time. And in his movies he never FIGHTS bad guys! There's been too much screen time with Lois Lane. Reboot Superman, make it good, and maybe, just MAYBE Superman and Batman will meet. But right now, the Superman movies stink...

I'm so not excited about this Nolanverse version of Superman. He's going to make it "realistic" and over-exposition the shit out of the script (esp if David Goyer writes it). And his version isn't dark. Batman Returns is even darker than TDK. The best Nolan movie was Momento.

I hope Singer goes and directs Batman.

i agree with basing the movies on the comics, not only will the plot be basically done for the movie it will also give people a heads up on what they are missing if they don't buy comics themselves. Nolan is a great director an i cannot wait for Batman 3, they should however find a director with similar visionary techniques to reboot the superman franchise. Also is there anything in the works for a Flash movie because i'm dying to see that myself.

Yeah Supes movies needs a reboot to erase the joke that was SMR. I too agree that if CN were to direct superman it would be too "dark" I've seen his work, prestige and DK and DKR, and they seem dark to me, but CN does get comics so maybe he'll do SM justice? Plus he always uses the same actors. Me? the obvious choice for director would be Peter Jackson. King Kong, LOTR come on! lol.

IMHO - Superman's biggest frailty is his attempt to force the planet into peace. Yes, he's arrogant and self-righteous and as well-meaning as he is, as an alien amongst humans he's never really understood us. Its what has always set him apart, even as a child, and helped in the creation for his Holier Than Thou Messiah Complex.

Batman is batcrap crazy and fuled by vengence; also, his parent's money.

However, they're both orphans and I think that's helped them relate to each other, oddly.

I suppose a darker "film" would be possible, but for heaven's sake, the POINT of Superman is his impossibly virtuous light-side ness. And without that extreme, idealized conscience, Superman's power is an awful thing to contemplate!

I really detest the Hellywood idea that everything noble, everything we could admire, needs to be smeared up and put into the mud. Ideals are essential to humanity, and pure ones-- because, not inspite of our own flawedness.

The reason Hollywood does this is to create conflict and relatable characters. It's the easy choice, and makes movies remarkably similar, but still. It's not a moral thing. Exploring a character's faults is the best way to make him/her realistic. Superman's big flaw is rarely explored. Arrogance. Because of his power and ideals he places himself at greater importance than average joes. Superman is not a pompous ass, but he tends to over extend his availability rather than ask for help.

First of, Brandon Routh deserves another chance, in my opinion.

Secondly, a serious Superman would be great. Give him a worthy foe. I loved the Death Of Superman storyline. This might sound drastic, but let him die in an epic fight with Doomsday. Make it more shades of gray than black and white, but Superman cannot be corrupted. He is the beacon of hope and all good, I just hope they really give him a chance to prove his worth. Update Lex Luthor like what they did to the Joker(Nicholson4life).

My only problem with a Bats and Sups team up is that they usually make Sups a putz. They change Sups so that they can play up the "Odd Couple" dynamic. I want a movir, or even a comic, that presents them as having an effective working relationship without the usual characer defying comedy. Both Bats and Sups become one dimensional characters. We're never able to accuratley explore them for what they are and can be in relation to each other.

Yeah, that's how they're written in a lot of places. Strangely, I think Bruce Timm's Superman/Batman World's Finest movie handles those dynamics better than most attempts.

@Geekvolution I almost think that's why I don't like seeing them together at all. I just don't like that they are changed when it happens and I hate the; almost; impossibility of doing it well. Bats is supposed to be grittier and more realistic. More being the key word. And Sups is a sci-fi super hero... just because they both sell well individually doesn't mean they should both be in a feature together. Until they do something well rounded with them on paper. I'm not wasting my money.

Yeah, it is a problem sometimes. The time limit works really well when we're actually debating something, but it can be limiting for videos like this. I'm finding that when we don't use it (like in Treksperts) it's harder not to go over time and end up having to do more 2-part videos.
