  • What's even.

  • Great song. Great voice. Great guitar. Hats not to like

  • ahhhhh

    thank you

  • @TheRestlesswind ... and to think!!! I believed all the rubbish. Now I only scratch my head in disbelief and pity for the one who is so dis-respected!!!

Married ogres should only be tickled by their children and spouse... but 'strange affairs' abound here!!!

Beautiful song and singer when all is said and done... thanks!!

  • Martin Simpson backing June Tabor, singing a song written by Richard Thompson - how could this not be totally awesome?! :D

Thanks to chrissuddes for uploading :D

  • Woooow! What can one say, this is sooooooooooo superb! Absolutely stunning performance... Love it to bits...

  • This song will be on the upcoming cd from Martin Simpson to be released in September.

  • They recorded it before, in 1980, on June Tabor's third solo album, "A Cut Above." And I think that may be the best version of this song, even better than Richard & Linda Thompson's original version.

  • Wundervoll und ohne gleichen...

  • Absolutely amazing performance.

  • wonderful dance of vocal and instument. I can't listen without good shivers.

    Many hugs.

  • I love June Tabor's version of this great song written when Richard Thompson was a young man.

  • Hi, can someone tell me what TV channel this was on, where it was recorded and who the performers are? - also who wrote this song?

  • wonderful. June Tabor simply the best folk singer I ever heard. ANd Martin Simpson - remember seeing him in the Three Puckero's in Aberdeen years back.- he'll always be in my top 5 gigs list, he was stunning. Thanks for posting this

  • Fabulous!

  • Written by the Sufi poet Si Fudul al-Hawari, translated and set to music by Richard Thompson.

  • So nice to be introduced to June & Martin by this lovely medium called You Tube... I truly enjoyed their ajoined union for this piece "Strange Affair" I have always loved to accompany a female vocalist & this dear lady has such a wonderfull voice. Martin you have made another fan ...wish I could hear & see you in your up and coming show in Toronto Ontario Canada.. I will keep an eye out for you Cheers & Thanks for posting this wonderfull video of arisans

  • Beyond gorgeous.

  • I thought only Linda could deliver this song but helpmaboab.

    Dreams indeed............

  • brilliant..and very moving.

  • Indeed a masterly delivery of a wonderful song.

It's the only delivery that has had the same goosebumps effect as hearing Linda T sing it accompanied by Richard and Simon Nicol on their "sour Grapes" tour in my student days. Shame that "First Light" has been out of print for so long - I'd love to hear the original again.

    thanks for posting!

  • Indeed, a magnificent rendering of a wonderful song.

This is the only version that gave me the same goosebumps I had when I heard Linda T sing this accompanied by Richard and Simon Nichol on their "Sour Grapes" tour back in my student days. Two ladies that can twist the delivery to tear your heart to shreds. Sadly First Light has been out of print for far too many years and the "original" is hard to come by.

    Thanks for the posting!

  • lovely, lovely.

  • Sobell = sublimes

  • To all you "Britains got talent" fans, Britain has always had talent, you just need to look!

  • The perfect song for her wonderful voice. And what gorgeous twangy guitar work. Folk at its absolute best.

  • stunning - thank you for posting

  • Love !

  • Life's a strange affair.

  • Filmed at Union Chapel in London I think

  • No, it was a BBC4 session at St Lukes.. its lovely isn't it..

  • @chrissuddes No, looks more like St Lukes LSO. A Gillian Welch gig was filmed there, also Ryan Adams around 2004. Check out their vids from here. Something very magical about the place.

  • looks like a gorgeous setting

  • What a wonderful combination: June Tabor singing, Martin Simpson playing, and Richard Thompson's composition. Perfect!

  • The Holy Trinity

  • Two of my favourites, together. As the blurb says, achingly beautiful.

  • Can anyone tell me how you categorise Junes voice in terms of pitch? i think it is absolutely fabulous-so rich and deep for a woman. Is it the female equivalent of a baritone?

  • Definitely an alto, and a low one at that. The first time I heard June Tabor's voice, I could hardly believe my ears. I had to go back to the store and buy the rest of her CD's (obviously pre iTunes and YouTube!).

  • Technically she'd be a contralto - "alto" has a specialised meaning in choral music and is not normally applied to an individual singer. A contralto is the lowest type of female voice, and June Tabor has about the lowest female voice I've ever heard. Also the spookiest, but there's no technical term for that.

  • Wonderful, as others have said - but am I alne here in thinking that the star of this is BBC Four. They've given us John Martyn, Richard Thompson, Danny Thompson, Ivor Cutler, Robert Wyatt etc etc

  • Good point. In the midst of the inane nonsense that fills the airwaves I often chance across something fabulous on BBC4. Shut down ITV and give the Beeb the cash, I reckon!

  • completely agree! Give that man a medal!

  • What a fantastic performance! Anyone know when or where this was recorded? Is there any more? Please post if there is!

  • On BBC TV a little while ago. I have the concert on my Sky box so I'll try to post some more when I get the time

  • My god what a voice! And Martin, fabulous as usual.

    A glorious duet.

  • Hi - When was this previewed on TV - was it recently ?

  • There are a so beautiful voice and playing!... this performance is just great!... ******** Thank you

  • Wow, this is just fantastic. I've been in love with June Tabor for many years since she made the first Silly Sisters vinyl album, now she has helped me discover Martin and his beautiful finger style guitar. .Thank you chrissuddes

  • Woaw, this is beautifull!
