Great sequence and even better "troubleshooting" & breakdown. Those are the sessions where all the magic happens. Every bit as important to have those lil pow-wows as to have the general techniques of the night instruction. Those minute details are keys! Great post Ari. Keep up the good work!
Ari Bolden doesnt have the best reputation for some of the moves on youtube but this move looks pretty fuckin sick, solid pass in a difficult position for both guys.
@Arcturistheballer not all moves work on all people all the time. It doesn't matter who you are, everyone will have an opinion if they THINK it will work or not. What works for one person may not work for another. Keep an open mind..that's my motto-Ari Bolden
This is why I love Eddie. Always open-minded. Where else would you see a sensei patiently listening to his students? Not in a karate dojo, i assure you!
Basically what I am seeing is that all you guys are about is wrestling without muscling it. It actually looks fun to do what you guys do, and the techniques you share and add. I am a dude who likes to think and I like strategy, If l lived closer I would love to hang and learn with you guys.
PS girl and guy working on their skills in the back are funny, it kinda looks awkward at 2:17 :)
At 3:20 in the video, Eddie goes for another underhook (I suppose you'd call it). If he'd let go of the lockdown, he can just go to a ghost escape. If he had the arm triangle like he gets later it could conceivably turn into a north south choke.
The rubber guard in Judo is called Kogata jime or kakota jime or something like that, but Judo had it a long time ago there are many chokes and techniques mistakenly taken from Judo and claimed by BJJ.
hey Ari i am curis where did u train before ur 10th plantet opened did u live in the usa or go to the other locations in canda i am just curis good vid
I'm a super novice and this may be just a stupid suggestion but at 2:46, can't the top guy lock up a kimura on the bottom guy's right arm and roll back on top. Do not take this as I'm trying to be a douche. I just want to know if that would work.
im a novice too but it looks like there is good chance he could have got the kimura but i think he was just trying to get the pass to side control and sink the guillotine. . to show bravo the variation they were tryin to work on. hell i could be retarded too though lol
i think that even if the gentleman on top were to grab a kimura he would not be able to create enough room to finish it. he is too low on eddie's body and eddie's legs would prevent him from moving up.
it would work, but the guy on the bottom has a strong lockdown, giving the guy on top slightly less mobility. SLIGHTLY. yep, it would work if you can neutralize the leg lockdown.
but, it wouldnt be very smart to use a kimura. u could try a rear-naked choke with one leg on the waist since the guy on the bottom is on his side.
You might be right - but it's fairly tough to land a Kimura from half guard verses side control - I think their logic is grab SC before (or while) going for the Kim (or in this case, the choke)
first, there's always a "what if" question to be asked. there's a defense and a counter to every technique and there are always other options from every position. as for the kimura option, it's unlikely. from the top position in half guard you nearly always want the kimura to be on the opposite side of the guy's body. ari is on eddie's right, ari should kimura eddie's left arm. it's always possible though, i wouldn't completely say no to it. also no tension in eddie's legs makes this pass tough
@kjkent17 no probably not because for one thing his right arm is on the opposite side of the body and he would have to reach all the way to the left side of his face to secure the wrist for the kimora, and usually the guy on the top would grab the inside of his own right thigh, im not sayin its impossible , but i myself just wouldnt be able to do it
Thats not how you do that pass. You don't go around back of the neck, you go under the front. Your palm grabs his lower shoulder. Your other hand is on his back mid section. You twist him by pushing his shoulder back and his ribs in. This turns him face down and lands your arm locking him into a very nasty choke. This Capoeira defense also works as a defense for the single leg.
I'm saying I do both Jiu JItzu and Capoeira. My Capoeira mestre taught me the variatons for this pass. Sometimes your far hand goes around the back of his closer shoulder and sometimes on his midback, but your near arm always comes in under and goes across so the palm of your hand bases on his shoulder muscle right next to where the clavicle meets the shoulder. The point of this pass is not to land a side control, it's counter an attack by spinning the person around and landing in a choke.
im a big guy so if somone were to try this on me as soon as he whips his leg around i have that underhook if i drive into him ill end up in top half guard however i doubt id have the forethaught to see this coming its a good move if you pick the right moment
I have been doing jits for over 15 years now and can say yes this is a good move but I would try and hood inside the leg to A prevent the bridge the biggest threat, and B to be able to control the hips better, You need to play with it. I think having Eddie mess with would really help you.
Are there any videos on closed full guard passes on submissions 101? Is the gameplan strictly pulling half guard/rubber guard and working for sweep to get to side control or mount? Dont get me wrong, I love 10th planet system, but I'd be very appreciative as to what are eddies thoughts on a top game from the closed guard. The only pass I'm familiar of is the underpass/baby wipe pass. Just wondering if you had a gameplan for the top game as intricate as halfguard/rubber guard.
One of the finest things about JJ, working on technic and then having your training partners work on countering it. What other sport/ hobbie offers this?
I do hook the leg when the pass occurs. Sometimes it is too hard to get the craddle/s grip so I do this option. I've had great success with it still ;-)
do you guys remember the last demian maia fight vs chael sonnen? i agree with Joe Rogan when he said that the take down prior to the triangle choke was a work of art. can you please break that move down? i'm still confused on how demian used chael's force to his own advantage. hope to here from you guys...
when ari kicks over 2 unhook the lockdown, 4 a second he has the setup for the grapevine of the legs to get to the truck, instead of untangling and sitting out to regular side control, could you unhook the guillotine arm up around his head and go straight to the twister roll? i think the difficulty would be swimming the arm back through from the guillotine past your opponents underhook, but at 1:39 he has his guy turned into him already, which can be hard to get when guys are used to the twister
it takes a bit of working on it but yes you can get the twister roll from here...you can fish net aswell if the person legs are loose. I was thinking this when i first watched the capoera pass and have been working it ever since. REALY sick!
i want see some of these moves live not this kind not all in the gym . yah it looks good here but when the guy is actually showing some resistance its not going to come through
Try it out. See how it works live. It is better to be a doer than a watcher of other's deeds. Just wondering what your point is I guess. Do you make that comment on every BJJ video you watch? Unwilling to try something until you've seen others succeed? Be the leader man. Jiu Jitsu is so much about playing, having fun, and evolving. I'll try anything out and if it doesn't quite work, try to adapt it.
These techniques are SO Complicated. how many different moves are there in 10th planet jiu jitsu? Do UFC fighters just use regular jiu jitsu? or do they use this stuff too?
Do you think you could hit the twister after you open the guy's legs by grape vining the one that's on top? He's turned into you and you're basically in twister side. I'll have to try it out
Well then it would be stupid to do that pass in the first place, wouldn´t it. Every pass doesný have to be suitable for every situation, this is a BJJ/SW pass.
When is your face available for punches? I think the move would actually be better suited towards mma because if you can't hook his leg you can at least sit your weight down on the guy for as long as the ref allows you and tire him a bit. Look at how much energy Bravo is using to defend the transition.
Therea actualy IS a good foot lock ih there... You think that would work as a backup? The other day I got footlocked ehyle I had my rubber gyard going. The guy just grabbed with the other arm and used his back for leverege. Also he controled my other leg so I couldn't get a triangle in or anything. It's a good footlock btw.
I don't have a camera available, no. Sorry. it's basicly when you have one hand underneith his armpit(full guard) trying to go into NY. He grabs the top of the foot between his biceps and forearm (like an underhook) and pushes forward(like underhooking behind your back...) I'l try and make a vid of it some time, but not soon.
I was screaming at eddie to do a T-rex with both arms and pull you away. But what he did. lol You should of stoped what you where doing and fought his choke.
The choke wasn't a problem at anytime. It was an armless darce but as we discussed at the end "it really didn't have the leverage needed to work". I just kept my position and kept squeezing my guillotine harder and leaning back on his neck. It is a good way to test the waters.
Very nice guys thanks! I tried the pass lastnight and got swept right away. It was my first time trying it and I dont think i posted out with my leg far enough??? I got it the second time but it was a little shaky. What do you think Ari?
Posting the leg out is what keeps you on top. If the person tries to bridge and roll, they must unlock their legs and that is when you blast on top. It is a timing thing of course. We've have very good success with this.
Correct me if I am wrong but couldn't Eddie just roll towards Ari's right shoulder since both arms are occupied (right with Eddie's head and left with the legs)? Ari would have to release the grip on one of the two arms to base out.
this is great, i was wondering though instead of moving into the guillotine, why not slide into twister side control, and you've pretty much hooked the grapevine up aswell.
as a traditional martial artist I find the guys lying on their sides chillin while the Instructors are teaching to be very disrespectful . what do you think Ari?
I asked the question to a traditional martial artist. and it was JUST a question. I wanted to know what Ari thought. please accept my apology if you were in anyway offended by my post.
I was not offended. i just wanted to know WHY you think it is disrespectful. Maybe if they were talking and not listening. but from what i see they were just kicking back and watching.
Im sorry but I dont have the time to debate the virtues of respect and tradition in martial arts with you. We obviously come from different schools of thought on this issue. I just wanted to know what a person who was trained in a traditional Japanese martial art (like Ari) thought about this issue. again I did not mean offense. Good luck with your training.
Don't you know that it has been scientifically proven that one's hearing is reduced up to 85% when he is in a leaning position compared to sitting rigid and cross-legged?
When you roll with Eddie you must feel like I feel when I'm rolling with my coach. I'll learn some cool new thing, often from you guys, and though it works on most then I go and try with him and get stuffed.
Its just like anything. All moves have counters. The better the player, the faster they think and and can counter. This sweep works really well and Eddie loved it...we just went 3 steps beyond looking for counters and such. Eddie stuffs a lot of stuff-even stuff from HIS system. I am amazed how counters work. Jiu Jitsu is, after all, kinetic chess!
no wories man Eddie always talks about reps and live drills if you want something to work you need to put tons of sucessful reps in until your body says "I got this one" then the confidence bulids and the technique becomes useable.
Oh no doubt. I wish my BJJ instructor was more strict about doing reps. He's pretty laid back and the best in our class likes to learn stuff by rolling and everyone has slowly adopted that attitude. Ah well.
My MMA coach is sick and comes up with some crazy moves and stuffs stuff that for most is unstuffable. It's nice to see someone like Ari who I learn things from meet the same feeling.
I need to post some videos on here of moves I see only in my gym, a guard pass and half guard sweep.
I just love submissions 101!
