By the way, this was back when "Scooby Doo" was first airing, along with "The Hot Wheels", "Wacky Races", "The Skyhawks" (pilots who kept doing things like launching gliders off ski jumps), and I forget what else. If you want to know how your parents got that way....might be a few clues here.
Yes, folks, this stuff did look just as weird when it first aired. And we loved it! And when we got tired of this, there were the Banana Splits (later known as the Teletubbies I think) and anything by the Kroft Brothers. The last are especially great....."how many drug images can you count in this frame?" Ah, those were the days.
This stuff was a trainers show, but was not really well produced as saturday morning kiddie fare. I remember it from 1970. I was in third grade at the time. An adult could see the time and patience put into caring for these animals, and laugh at the costumes and performances. As a boy it seemed very slow and tedious. Thank you for posting this wonderful nostalgia. The movie "speed racer" with emile hirsch has a few scenes from a similar serial in it.
I'm actually surprised this hasn't been brought back---as a movie. We've already got one about cats and dogs as secret agents, and they don't even have opposable thumbs.
With all the CGI and puppetry they've got now, they'd only need real chimps for the close-ups.
I understand that this show could probably not be done today due to various protest groups, etc. But really, people it was just a fun show done forty years ago for kids! I always liked watching it as a kid, and I know many others did too. So, let's not over-analyze everything to the point where everything in life is somehow evil. Good Grief! Me? I'm still looking for any YouTube clips of "Kool McKool" or the Jerry Lewis cartoon from 1970 or so.
I remember when Nickelodeon aired this in the 80s on both their regular *and* Nick-at-Nite lineup :) CHUMP is awesome, lol! There's an Arab agent, 2 Asians, a mad scientist, a German and his chauffeur and a Brit!
I am in tears! I haven't seen this since it aired in the 70's. Maybe Lancelot Link Secret Chimp could put Ali Assa Seen to work, get rid of Al Quida, stop the war and bring our troops home!
that good not really this was idea by children workshop cause cartoons we watch before 70 were deem to volient for us..lol This was torture for us watch bad tv!
I wouldn't call it mistreatment if the monkeys didn't mind being dressed in costumes and being overdubbed with the voices of actors who just said whatever fit each monkey's lip movements...which added to the hilarity of the show.
I hope nobody minds me mentioning, but was this considered "crueltey to animals"? My teacher thought the chimps were mistreated on the set. Is that true?
CHimps, despite their cuteness, are potentially vicious. I would imagine, any mistreatment, would have resulted in a chimp biting some trainers face off.
@Pikachuiscool your teacher needs to zip his lip. Considering how much money is invested in chimpanzees and training them, it is highly unlikely that they could be mistreated. Plus these trainers treat these animals like they are their own family.
Also chimps can tear you to bits if you piss them off.
Oh wow! Saturday mornings in the early 70s! I remember watching this show with my little brother - who is now 43! Ha Ha! Late 80s early 90s I still watched Saturday morning toons with my kids - any excuse, huh? Then the little brats started playing soccer...
I am considering buying the whole set and watching it all end to end in a 22 hour marathon.
I fully expect to spend a long time afterwards knowing that oriental monkeys are spying on me.
Whether or not I perform this marathon under the influence of industrial amounts of MDMA and ketamine is absolutely none of anybody's business, except for me and my monkeys.
bullshit. "ignorant people view a chimp as being racist". as in, chimps themselves are inherantly racist? "why dont chimps remind people of asians?" YOU are the one who first drew the comparison with your comment of chimps in the nba.
you called me a racist, then said racism is dead.. you must work for the public school system. I wasn't aware there was no such thing as racism anymore. I thought hate crimes still happened everyday based on ethnicity. I thought wars were being waged around the world based on racist doctrines. I thought genocide in the name of ethnic cleansing was going on to this day all across the African continent. I guess I missed that bulletin.
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm from Canada. glad you got the situation under control down there. sadly, racism(rey-siz-uhm a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.) lives on in the north.
Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities on earth. but, you make a good point. I could never understand what it is like to live in los angeles. the united states is a melting pot whereas canada is made of communities that largely retain their heritage and culture. just two different ways of life. so, i guess we're not going to see eye to eye on the subject. peace.
I'm sorry to say but, regardless of the fact that LA is a major melting pot there's a lot of racial tension there as well. I found LA to be one of the most undesirable cities to visit let alone live in that crap hole. New York is a better example of a melting pot where different races actually get along. Also, last time I visited Toronto, I thought everyone there lived in harmony, regardless that different nationalities keep themself seperated there.
I used to watch this show when was very little. I'm 27 now and I can never watch this now. I'd be too offended about the animals being dressed up. LOL
I agree. They used to have Dragnet, Superman, The Patty Duke Show, Dobbie Gillis--all the cool shows. Not anymore, though. They have nothing but junk on there now.
