well after watchin the movie in hd and watching spekial features i noticed how the director wanted alot of the things in the movie like this "phone number" to be a thought of piece to some puzzle that the viewer thinks has some signifcant effect when in fact it really doesnt....so for all you idoits out there it really doesnt mean anything its just part of the movie setup

...continued: The whole textile thing isn't much of a clue though. The entire area surrounding 401 Broadway is littered with textile and fabric places. Specifically there are two fabric shops located at 391 and 393 Broadway that could be the owners of this specific sign, but in relation to Cloverfield, I see nothing.

In relation to the whole "textile" spotting, this is an actual billboard located on the side of a building on Broadway. I believe this shot was staged somewhere between 401-450 Broadway because when you use Google Maps streetview, you can make out the large blue sign with the distinct white square below it on the side of the 401 Broadway building.

nice observation but i would think that if they wanted the number to have importance, they would have no choice but to put 555 as an area code. but on the other hand they could probably avoid the 555 area code if they didn't show the full number (and they didn't show the first digit).
