  • Long long long long time!!!...and the boys all laugh!!...One Sayuri

  • 2:28 Oh my goodness, the proper way to comb hair is from the bottom up! So painful :/

  • @ShyCandi Hehe...not with wax... :/

  • @PrincipessaDellOpera You mean like waxing body hair?

  • @ShyCandi No what I mean is that the stuff the hairdresser dipped the comb in and then combed Sayuri's hair with was wax. It held the hairstyle in place. No such thing as hairspray or hair gel. They used actual wax.

  • @PrincipessaDellOpera OUCH! x(

  • i think Pumpkin got a bad rep not because she herself was awful but because her 'sister' couldn't be bothered to help her learn

  • If you read the book you'll find that Pumpkin wasn't really talented in a particular art so she was heavily relying on Hatsumomo to get her known through parties etc.

  • @babyathina Oh I know but Hatsumomo spent more time trying to get her known then actually finding a talent that would make up for her lack. She cared only of what made her look good.

  • In the book shouldn't Sayurai have a white collar and Mamaha a red one, its not really like that in the film? Also its weird to think Hatsumomo and Mamaha were only in their twenties, and Mamaha was actually a few years younger than Hatsumomo, but of course the actresses are clearly older than the book (since they needed brilliant actresses this change makes sense)

  • @BaoYen1000 actually I cant remember the colour of the collars (I think I'm wrong) so can someone remind me please?

  • @BaoYen1000 I could be wrong but I'm fairly sure maiko (apprentice geisha) wear red collars that gradually become more white as they grow more senior in rank. SO it makes sense Sayuri has a red collar here and Mameha a white one ^_^

  • @BaoYen1000 Actually it's the other way around. Mameha wears the white collar, a symbol of a full geisha, along with more understated hairstyles and less flashy kimono. Sayuri as a maiko wears the red collar, complex hairstyles, and more extravagant kimono. When a maiko (apprentice geisha) is ready to become a geisha, a ceremony is conducted which is often referred to as "turning of the collar", when she switches her red collar for a white one. I just reread the book. ^_^ Hope I helped!

  • Women still got to go thru pain to be beautiful. It will never change!

  • Those shoes dont look comfy, but those socks look heavenly

  • i do lyk

  • Someone call the firefighters...cuz that bitch just got burned!!!

  • When sayuri..started dancing , i was like..don't mess up, don't mess up,don't mess up

  • @mariawithmakeup same here! it's murphy's law that whenever it's important you stuff up!! at least, that's how it was for me. :)

  • Someone's jealous..N that's lil Hatsu-chan xD HAHAHA :P

  • theres more western make-up in that make-up box then needs to be lol

  • Ohhh didn't like that didya?

  • @frozenterror

I believe they call those Shamisen. Some say it's like a mini japanese guitar of some sort

  • @Valuabl3Sh3aves What sucks is it's made of cat skin

  • those guitars (or what ever the real name is for it) can make good guitar hero props!

  • @frozenterror93 It's a shamisen.

  • 5:02 cool slippers XD

  • i somehow imagined Chiyo and Pumkin Mameha- everyone completely different

  • Modern geisha just wear wigs now if they need an elaborate hairstyle. Those hairstyles they used to wear causes bald spots to appear.

  • I think the movie had to be westernized to make it more acessible for the masses. If they had kept it completly true to its roots, other than a few who know about geisha would have indefinatly not understood the whole geisha thing.

  • HATSU JUST GOT BURNED!!!!

  • I notice that they never actually give her a maiko hairstyle... >.>

  • @orgoik ikr! i have this book and the name "maiko" is almost like mine name "maika"

  • I love when she looks at herself in the mirror and realizes she is beautiful. LOL Hatsumoto's worst nightmare comes true!

  • Lady gaga probarbly got inspired by those geisha heels lol

  • Hatsumomo - "I was a maiko myself once."

Sayuri - "Of course. But it's been such a very long, long, long long time."

HAHAHAHA! Lol that's hilarious! You go Sayuri! :D

  • hatsumomo says that she's an apprentice geisha once, and sayuri says that its been such a long long long long time, insulting hatsumomo for being old already. thats why hatsumomo got mad :o

  • the boy on the bike! Lmfao.

  • those fan skills r too cool!

  • Do Geishas exist today or not anymore

  • @lolahoneyforyou

Yeah they still exist but it's now illegal to sell your virginity.

  • @lolahoneyforyou They do, but not many of them are left. There's a lot of geisha imitators though that tourists take pictures with.

  • Geisha is living art...why on earth does she snap the stones together

  • @lolahoneyforyou For good luck

  • i like the way her make up, so adoreable.

  • at 2:30, what is happening with the comb and the hair. it looks like torture...

  • @samanddeanfan2009 I think its like the modern day idea of a hot oil treatment.... They boil water and dip the comb in it, and by dragging it slowly through their hair they are straightening her hair. Trust, it does hurt, but over time you get used to it... I'm just happy that now they have relaxers, and flat irons now!!!

  • @greeneyedmonster6 relaxers...now that’s torturous to the hair

im just giving my hair a break from all that relaxing…

hot oil treatments are a must!

  • @samanddeanfan2009 she is straightening her hair...im surprised its already pin straight… torturous not quite, just uncomfortable because i imagine the comb to be really really hot, plus she was pulling too hard.

  • @samanddeanfan2009 To keep the hair of a geisha up, they dip the comb in liquid black wax and then they comb her hair. It hurts because of the wax so they try not to sleep on their hair because it will ruin it and they have to go to the hairdresser again. That's also why she sleeps on the wooden headrest in stead of a pillow.

  • the boy on the bike with one look!!!

    haha

    awesome!

  • @1989eureka i know on her first try too...it was priceless

  • LOL Steve Terada . :)

  • I think maiko dont paint the upper lip.... among other things. hehe, she looks very pretty, though

  • I still wish they would've sprung for a stylist to get the maiko hair right, have geiko wigs

  • Steve Terada is the boy on the bike OMG!!!

  • THE GUY ON THE BIKE GOT GEISHA OWNED...g0wn3d

  • Zhang Ziyi is beautiful!

  • They should've used real geisha dances, not just fancy fan work

  • i didnt understand the insult at the end when sayuri replies with its been a very long time, can someone please explain that part thank you ( >w<)

  • @J3anie starting from 8:59 Hatsumomo kept (indirectly) insulting Sayuri in front of everyone in the room, Mameha asks Sayuri to respond to Hatsumomo's insult. When Hatsumomo told everyone that she was too a maiko (geisha apprentice) once, Sayuri make a come back with a reply with it is true that Hatsumomo was a maiko, but very loooong time ago. (it is a sarcastic way of saying you.are.old! LOL) gotta love her sarcasm x)

  • @MyTeenLifeLoLTV oh hahaha thank you soo much i kept rewinding that part and i just couldn't hear it lol thank you :3

  • @MyTeenLifeLoLTV I loved that too...long looooonnnggggg time

  • @MyTeenLifeLoLTV: Hatsumomo got owned! lol

  • 1:12 i love to see them dance with the fans together :)

  • 0:59 scared the crap out of me...

  • she is a living masterpiece

  • The recording is very jerky. otherwise thanks for uploading it!

  • those shoes she was wearing at 5:03 were soooo small

  • If I were the boy on the bike I would have crashed into the wall as well. [; SHE'S SAAAA PRETTYY. ♥

  • I love how in this movie, the remarks and insults are so smartly said that you don't need to hear swearing to know how much they detest one another.

  • no i all have to say is that her eyes looked so gorgeous when

she looked at the boy on the bike

  • This movie is not all that accurate. for instance, she is supposed to be a maiko, and she's putting lipstick on both lips, Maiko only put it on the bottom lip....

  • @Bakuhatsu37 in part 1 it said she was year of the rooster.... she's year of the monkey in the book.

  • @sexychick1511

Yeah, that was another thing that bothered me, along with the fact that the Nitta okiya burned down in the movie, but it never did in the book... Hatsumomo's friend's okiya burned down, not the Nitta okiya....

  • Wow!!! her eyes really r pretty!!

  • I have read the book very thoroughly, and although there were quite a few changes in the movie, I still love the movie as much as I love the book. :) Both interpretations are wonderful and fascinating.

  • I learned that little fan dance just for the sake of elegance. I love this movie for how pleasing it is to the eyes and ears!

  • @sunlocket me too!!!!!!(:

  • I love this part of the movie <3 they are so, so beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • GAHH. this movie is really pissing me off, compared to the book, and facts, geisha don't tie their own obi, they have a dresser sdo it, for it's FAR too much work on their own, and to tie it on the back. if they did, the knot would be in the front, and that would be the sign of a prostitute. >.<

  • @MissHazeleyed96 That's why mr. Bekkha is there...I think that's how you spell it (the old man in the beginning)

  • @Kimbelle10 it's actually spelled mr. beckku

  • @MissHazeleyed96 Yeah, that guy...

  • @MissHazeleyed96

I read the book, it's spelled "Bekku" =D

  • The money I'd pay for the makeup case at 4:12.....

  • I <3 this movie!!!

  • I love michelles yeaoh shes so pretty her voice is so elegant whoever did the casting for this movie are truly gifted well done!!!

  • "Oh what a Maiko myself was."

"Of course. But.. it's been such a very long.. long... long.. long long time."

  • what kind of torture pillow is that.

  • @istalkgeeks it is so they don't mess up the complicated, expensive hair dos

  • @istalkgeeks a torture pillow

  • @istalkgeeks Omaku, basically a block with a cushion so maiko's hairstyle stays intact

  • JUST ASKING, ...... BOTH OF THE LEAD STARS ARE NOT JAPANESE; ONE IS A CHINESE, THE OTHER IS A MALAYSIAN....WHY DIDNT THEY GET A REAL JAPANESE STARS FOR THE LEAD ROLES??

  • @cesaruy1313 Maybe because they couldn't find great Japanese actors, like the two great Chinese and Malaysian actors. Oh and typing in caps doesn't further prove your point.

  • i feel as if the Baron was being a bigass Pedo bear right there when Chiyo was pouring the empty teapot LOL crreeeeppper alllerrtt BIGG TIME!! XDDDD trying to check out her wrist LOL

  • @AnarchyEchelon that's true but that was great deal of skin back then unlike today girls just show anything they can -__-

  • i tried the one look thing with a guy on a bike... yeah... it worked. lol.

  • i was a bit upset how they changed the whole bike crash scene from the book. in the book, didnt she talk about cornering him so he would purposely crash? not with her look?

    D:

  • i think the training is the best part of all :)

  • hatsumono has every right to be jealous and fearful of chiyo! >=D

  • i find it interesting that back in those days, people insulted each other without the use of cussing, and they did it so smoothly too..unlike now these days, every other word is a cuss word lol

  • OHHHHH, BITCH JUST GOT CALLED OOOOOLD! *z snap*

  • oh ;D I think it something like "that you maybe notice her feet.." , but I'm not sure xD

  • Don't fuck with Shang Tsung's tea!

  • what did Hatsumomo say at 8:50 ish??

  • @tonnhoohnnot at 8:52 she said what's her name

  • @MrsHoneybeex3 oh thnx but i meant after Hatsumomo said "her fans are so hypnotic.." thnx :D

  • @tonnhoohnnot Hey there, she says "Her fans are soo hypnotic, that you would never notice her feet" :)

Basically insulting her dance skills in a cruel/kind manner. :) hope that helped

  • @XxSapsorrowxX ahhh thanks so much! its so hard to understand because of their accents...

  • @XxSapsorrowxX ah thx ;D I thought it was something like "that you maybe notice her feet" but this doesn't make sense ;D

  • but it's so unrealistic, the director must be 40 years old (?!!) and chiyo was just 14/15, so how could they fall in love ???

  • @MrsHoneybeex3 Thats exactly the realism in it all, back then 14 year old maikos were paid mizuages to have sex with 60 year old patrons

  • @0bjectivist right, but she really loves him.! and actually he has to be 65 years old at the end of the film ('cause she's 20 years old) but he even doesn't seem to have grey hair ;D

  • the geishas are really beauty without their make-up :D

  • OMG when the woman said 'For luck!' she sounded like the Grandma from Mulan O:

  • like if you read the book first.

  • Read the book First. The book was way better than the movie of course, but the movie was awesome none the less. But the movie was almost exactly how I envisioned the book.

  • @MsInterpret i too agree

  • What does it mean on you feet not off them??

  • @Sara21persian

It means that the best way to lure a Danna was to be smart, sell your skills as a true Geisha and stay off your back like a common whore.

  • Those shoes are...the opposite of a good idea.

  • 3:58 ah man, i would've fallen off that bike too :D

  • "But that was such a long long long long time"

Lol thats right ya old evil wench hahahaha

  • I would definitely fell with those shoes o.o"

  • Mameha looks hotter without tying her hair *-*

  • i think they purposely did that

    teapot thing. because he looked

as if he knew it was about to happen

  • i think they purposely did that

    teapot thing. necause he looked

as if he knew it was about to happen

  • I believe asian women are the most beautiful in the world. Their features are so delicate. I would love to look like an asian.

  • i got goosebumps when she looked up~~

  • I wish I could dance with fans liek that! TT_TT

  • am not japan but i think the real geisha hair look different then this one

  • i love this scene, where Chiyo is learning all the trades of becoming a geisha, looove it!!! i wish i could wear a kimono like that, just for one day, and i'd be happy :D they are so beautiful!!!

  • best section of the movie

  • dance was epic!!! my history teacher is having us watch this movie and it is so awesome

  • what are those insturments called?

  • @maddy31400 Shamisens. :D

  • @FantasticFlutist Thankyou >w< i have always wanted to figure out what they were called x3

  • @maddy31400 Haha no problem. :D

  • 3:58 Steve Terada! the boy on the bike!!!!! :3

  • Why do the geisha leave that triangular patch of skin unpainted? At 0:15.

  • @astrosparkie The design is called "sanbon-ashi" / "three legs". It's supposed to have an erotic effect on men, because Japanese men view the neck area of a woman with the same erotic effect as a Western men views the legs of a woman, This is also why the geisha wear their kimono so low in the back so they expose quite a lot of their neck area.

  • @astrosparkie also, building off of towanoitami, they like to expose some skin to kind of show a mask and that they are someone different under that mask. :D

  • Humm i never understand why they say she is 15years old?She look older !

  • its been such a very long long long long time XD

  • the slippers are just like high heels or wedges?lol

  • LOL THE FACES SHE MAKES WEN SHE'S GETTING HER HAIR DID!!!!!!

  • Oh, does Hatsumomo want some ice for that burn? LOL

  • Sayuri pwn'd Hatusmomo. That betch got DESTROYED! ^_^

  • the main actor is actually chinese. lol :)

  • am i the only one who LOVES the freakin exchange between hatsumomo and sayuri at the end?! i lol'ed the whole time sayuri got her at the end though

  • 4:57 reminds me so much of Mulan's grandmother who sings, "now add a crickketttt just for luck!" hehe:D

  • the montage- pre war japan style!

  • the pice of beauty is high, they say. lol 2:28

  • During her danced i notice mamaha is not playing to the sound you hear so i think they have a mic of one actually playing behind the stage

  • "We sell our skills not our bodies." Definition of a geisha right there :D

  • Steve Terada!!! 3:54 - 4:02 xD

  • when i watch this movie iam proud to have "Maiko" as my second name :)

  • LOL! and the teapot was empty!! I felt embarrassed just watching that sceen!

  • their hairstyles are wrong.

  • @20PINKluvr

In the dvd extra's this is explained, the costume woman said she wanted to make it a little more modern not like a history programme.

  • 7:27 I felt so awkward...

  • really, ladies? socks and sandles? smh.

  • the book and the movie makes me want to wear a silk kimono...so freaking bad...

  • how old is hatsumomo ?

  • @axingurl81 She is between her 20's and 30's or so.

  • I've done that look before walking on the sidewalk a dude in a really nice sports car ran his car threw the tall bushes at walgreens lol it was epicly hilarious when he rushed out the car door to look at me and then his car as if i did something to him xD hahahha!!!!

  • Oohhhhh, Hatsuomomo got buuuurned!!

  • Aw Man!!! I want to be able to do what she does at 4:00

  • what were they doing at 2:38?

  • @lovemykaila

I think it might be the old fashioned way of straightening hair, or preparing it for putting up, because when the hair dries it will stay in position. They are using hot water and pulling quite hard, so I think that is why she looks like she is in discomfort.

  • @SuPeRsTaR71679051 - It's not hot water but hot wax! They used it to hold the hair in a particular style for days. That's why it's so important for them to sleep so delicately.

  • @paintmelovely

Oh, thank you for your correction. I love this movie because it shows the true art of being a Geisha, not the wrong views that have been given about them. It takes so much talent, not just beauty.

  • @paintmelovely I already knew the thing about the wax, but I didn't know for what purpose they used it, now it is clear to me. Just like why she had to sleep like that. Thanks a lot :D
