  • It's a kind of Beethoven full of tatoos coming out the jungle and the sea foam. ;)

  • Does anyone out there have a site where it gives the translation of the words of this song from Maori to English?

  • @Pattipu

you didn't read the video's description, did you?

  • @thecelticinme Nope I didn't..........silly me.

  • @Pattipu Now that I'v looked at the translation I wish I hadn't, very disappointing:(

    Lost in translation no doubt.

  • i have r classical backround and i still enjoy kiris rendition of anything with or without back up

  • There is something that vocalissimo will never be able to understand and fails to hear. Te wairua hoki o nga matua tupuna i roto i te wai.

  • @varetis Tautoko!

  • Anyone else searche this because of 'Arohanui'??

  • tino ataahua!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "he kahurangi mo te iwi"

    ..a treasure for the people..

  • What language is this in?

  • @Spheett

    Maori, from New Zealand

  • beautiful and powerful! ^^

  • Listen Kiri is to have a fresh encounter with angels.

  • Magnificent... !!!

  • There is, of course, a great deal of sentimentality around Kiri singing these songs, but from am musical point of view, it is a waste of a voice. The tessitura of the songs is all wrong for her, and when she goes into head voice, the sound is very unidiomatic. Sad to hear such a beautiful voice being shouted down by the chorus.

  • @vocalissimo1 I think I understand what you mean. The song goes back to her cultural identity of course but she doesn't have the right voice for it. It's like trying to carve a turkey with a scalpel.

  • @wowthungsten Exactly.

  • @vocalissimo1 Your opinion in this commentary is from a critical point of view of waste of space. If it was wrong for her, diva that she is, she would not have done it. I get that you are knowledgeable in the field of music: the texture, pronunciation and head (debatable)/laryngeal voice. Your last sentence applies equally to your opinion.

Kaore te kumara e whaakii ana tana reka. The sweet potato does not say how sweet he is.

    Kia ora mai ano

  • @Plumannieduff Thank you for your confused and semi-illiterate response.

  • @vocalissimo1 An excellent voice is not the sole preserve of a particular genre. It is nice, for those who do not enjoy opera, theatre, classical etal, that most classified singers also have the thoughtfulness to share themselves with a wider audience. Regardless, while Kiri took the lead in this song, she was not solo but part of the group. All in all a wonderful rendition; the raw beauty exquisitely captured.

  • @vocalissimo1 I agree, but this is experiment, and it's great!)) It's not Kiri's main line. but I very like this song and album)

  • This song reminds me of the All Blacks!!

  • Tarakihi - Cicada...who woulda thought this song would be about a noisy insect!! Tara ra ta ki ta kita - the noise it makes!!

  • yes, cicada or locust; more info at folksong (dot) org (dot) nz/tarakihi/index (dot) html

  • thats HERBS helping with the backing vocals...

  • Words do not describe how amazing that was.

  • Amazing, a song about an insect -- the cicada -- can be a powerful and uplifting experience, sung in Maori.... :-) This speaks volumes on the native New Zealand culture and its close-reverance to nature.

  • Fantastic!!!

  • her arias are amazing. I need to buy more of her cd's

  • WOW!! What a powerful, beautiful song!!!

  • This song is so cool that I could cry!!!!!

  • Excelente!!!

  • I know this song is cool man!!!

  • What a talent this woman is!!!

  • This is great thanks!

  • sugar, I am originally from Chile (now in US), perhaps the music remind us of Easter Island. But the main reason in the great quality of this recording and of course Kiri

  • xetor. I think Kiri has great talent also. She is particularly loved in the Latin world, particularly in Spain and Brazil. I played some of her recording to some Brazilian ladies who were doing a German course with me. They thought she actually sounded Brazilian, the way she sings. What an honour for her!

  • finding inspiration!!!

    powerful

    thanks kiri

  • Tino reka te waiata

  • Holy! This is so powerful. Wonderful! Magic

    Thanks for posting this!

  • Kiri, no one is better than you!! I just love this song and I am from Chile!!!

    Kiri the best !

  • I admire Te Kanawa putting back to her craft and to young singers at the beginning of their careers.

  • Wow!

  • This is so tight ive never heard this kind of music before. This is off the chain

  • Tu meke!! ka mau te wehi!!!

  • to be honest, I think out of all the Polynesian languages Maori is the best one to listen to musically! Just something about the Maori language that is so significant!

  • Right going to bed now!...& with this song humming in my dreams lol.

  • My goodness, Ive watched this like 10times already tonight, I should be in bed for work early tomorrow, I cant stop watching this, its addicting, I wish I could sing like her.

  • Hi Kowhaib. I agree, this is a very stirring version of Tarakihi. However have a listen to Elizabeth Marvelly doing it - also on YouTube - pretty amazing for one so young.

  • You shouldn't listen to such rousing music on a work night.

  • dont we just Kiri the "heart of NZ"

  • Epic. kia ora.

  • hello all, this song was performed in Gisborne for the 2000 celebrations, i lived across the road where it was done at dawn and it ws SPECTACULAR!

  • shivers much .

  • Love this song, so powerful!!! although i don't understand the lyrics at all. I am a Chinese, and if this song is about cicadas, in Chinese culture, the metaphor of cicadas means "rebirth" and ancient people put jade cicadas in coffins of the dead to wish for their reincarnation.

  • Hi Ayliu. That is really interesting. Yes, it is about the beautiful Cicada. I have the lyrics in Maori and English. you can get the by typing "Lyrics to Tarakihi" into Google. Where would we be without Google ay?

  • I've heard that the song is a celebration of summer. When I hear it I imagine the heat and the noise of the cicadas.

BTW, I think the second line should be E, ko te rito kia rite (ie not 2 'rite's, just one), and at the end it's Hei Hei Ha.

Thanks for posting this, I'd forgotten the tune at the start, so it's good to be able to sing it again, in time for summer! :-)

  • Celebration of summer. Now that makes a good deal of sense. I remember listening to the cicadas in the trees all through the long lazy summers of my childhood.

  • This song is about a CICADA?! It's so epic...

  • & this song w/ all this passion, is about cicada? Does the cicada have some special meaning Maori culture that I can't fathom? There must be some connotation, some meaning I am missing.

  • I am a New Zealander, not Maori so not completely qualified to comment authoritively, but I can tell you that NZ was devoid of any land mammals or fiercesome reptiles and apart from birds and insects there wasnt much for Maori to draw inspiration from in the animal kingdom in terms of the stubborn or mighty other than a cicada. But it is a metaphor none the less.

  • Well, any idea as to the meaning the cicada in Maori culture? Do NZ cicadas emerge every year or do they only emerge every few years. We have both kinds here.

When I was child we'd collect the dried husks off of trees in the summer. Some kids would line them up like an army of monsters & throw rocks at them.

  • The cicadas come out every year although i dont know about the individual cycles. Bear in my mind though that a lot of different species of plants and animals have been introduced from the rest of the world and maybe insects too.

  • Hi there. Cicadas spend around 17 years underground and then come out for three (approx) glorious days of singing and mating before they die.

  • I love hearing how versatile this woman is. She never ceases to amaze me :)

  • this song kwell

  • who's the composer? its realy good.

  • what language is this? it sounds interesting...she has an album with this?thanks

    It's tremendous.

  • She is fabulous. She is at least part Maori.

  • Woah, we're doing this song for a music festival but we haven't practiced with the basses and tenors chanting with us yet. I hope it will sound half as good as this!!!
