cat built these as one offs for mac/ the undercarriage last longer and they could track in 3rd gear and not chew that undercarriage up as fast. shame they went under.
I worked for Mcaninch on the hollister M.O. airport job and we had 11 D10 pulling 41 yard bowls and 2 d11s pulling 51 yrd bowls and i can tell you from experience the same number of rubber tire scrapers could not have touched us. For the simple fact we never had to stop EVER. And we where in material that would of needed two push cats to load as fast as we where loading about 15 sec. Yes they are very hard on undercarrages but the production is worth the investment. 60-100,000 yrds daily.
they got hydylalics or ether pullys that lift the back of the pan up at an angle then they got like weight that adjust the amount of dirt emtyed out kk
@TheBumcum it depends on where the final drive is set up....in the middle of the track is for pulling or a rear of the track drive is for pushing.....
Why, in the name of sweet shit, would you destroy D11's pulling tow-scrapers? So uneconomical its unbelievable whatever company this is is still in business.

@Kelsurk yup when my dad was a boss there he begged them to try 651's but they wouldnt they said anything under 1500 feet the D11's and D10's would out haul any rubber tire scraper, NOT! And they said anything over 1500 feet, you coukdnt beat trackhoe and trucks, NOT!
id rather be in one of those dragging a can around all day than sitting in a misserable buggy bouncing all day lol...nice to see something other than an 8k or 8h pulling them to...very nice
All of mcaninchs haul dozers have a tottaly different undercariage under them and a different track design that is y they are able to run 3rd gear, but still the cost was to high for mcaninch to compete now they have a bunch of MT865 pulling 641 pans!!!
And mcaninch does use hoe and trucks, a 5110 and 740's
mcaninch is broke because of these machines, thats why they have gotten rid of most of them! My dad was a superintendant on the branson highway job, he said they wont haul near as much as what wheel scrapers will!
McAninch is still in business. They can move material. They bring the tools to do the job in the most cost effective way. In places they run wheel scrappers and there are places they are running track. Depends on the job. Just because you have never done it the way they operate doesn't make it wrong. I have watched them show up and be gone a year ahead of what MoDot had said it would take more than once.
Caterpillar 657 scrapers would make far better choices for the haul road. By far, the best choices for the haul road would be Caterpillar's 666B scrapers, widely regarded as the best scraper ever made. Although Caterpillar discontinued production of the 666B in 1979, some still exist in running condition. Maybe Caterpillar will restore some 666B's to like-new condition and display them in museums or even reuse them on oil sands, mines, construction projects, and haul roads.
what about running 657s? and they can load themselves and go much faster down the haul road. dozers can only go so fast. and the undercarriages wear out in about 4 months. and McAninch did go broke. they had a big sale last year and sold lots of their equipment through CAT Auction Services.
Yeh, 57,s can load themselves but remember how many engines burning diesel, how many drive tyres do you have to keep in good order to achieve traction. I have used Cats FPC program and run the numbers on this spread and to 1200ft round haul distance it is very hard for a self propelled to keep up. Mcaninch had a big auction to clean house and like i said i would like to be as broke as them
Hmmm, no scraper brakes to maintain, no scraper powertrain to maintain, 4 scraper tyres lasting like the 2 on the trailer do, no haulroad to maintain with a grader, can work really steep country, can work when wet, no scraper operator to pay, should i go on? OK no dozer blade maintenance, no 2nd gear reverse track wear, no ripper maintenance, no scraper fuel bill. Think of it like this, how much lower is the dirt on a cost per yard basis. Much much cheaper without a doubt
With a 651 open bowl scraper you need a D11 or d10 to push load it so here we have an 11 and no scraper engine so only 1 machine burning fuel. Most undercarriage wear (at least bushings) is in reverse on a high track and these guys go forward 99% of the time. With the suspended undercarriage on a D11 and the low speed these guys run no haul road maintenance required = no grader which = no cost.
Mcaninch broke-yeh i would like to be as broke as them.
mstaff657 If you know so much how come no one is heard of you??? I think, No I Know you are just full of hot air. You are the one working with obsolete ideas.

I have had 57"s floating in bogs we stickem once in a while. We load in 22 sec's average and dump in 8th gear 99% of the time we move more with 1 657 in 3 hours than those 11's will move 10hrs that is a fact.
I could show you 25 problems with the operation in that vid, right off the top of my head. just because you've been doing it the same way for 40 years does not mean you have not been doing it wrong for the last 30 years.
If you know so much, how come no one knows you, or heard of you, or your company??? MacAninch, PCI are know all over the country. The companies running Cat/Scraper Combo move more dirt in a day than you will in your life time.
How long has MacAninch been running the D11 combo. I used to work for PCI in Iowa for awhile and at the time I only saw them running the D9-D10 Cat and can combo's. Makes me wish I was still doing that line of work. I do miss it. Those D11 cat and can combos just scream fun.
I heard a couple of years, pci I believe went to the d-11 and some kind of combo doing work along 30 west near tama now from what i have seen and heard.
Interesting post here. I have ran the 11R w/ 651 in Branson MO. And also I have yet to see any pan if you must out pull a cat and can. 637 can not run in the rain now can they. And lord forbid if you spin a tire on a wet rock.
Also you need a push cat with a 37 in the region we have worked. I would like to see what a 37 without a push cat can do in Kansas City.
And no they do not win every bid. ESS or Emery Sapp and sons (non union) now has copied these machines.
That may be true powerjoke but did you know that MacAninch downsized drastically this year and sold off a bunch of their iron and they dont win every bid. For all those that say pull scrapers arn't cost effective dont work in the field, iowa has some soft soil in areas and a pull scraper is the ticket in most of those areas.
do any of you guy's realize who this is?.....MacAninch actually has a seat on the board of directors for caterpillar,....you arent going to teach MacAninch anything with youre worn out ole' junk and know it all atitude. i can also tell you i have bid against them before and They will win the bid EVERY time.
I would like to see you with a 631 scraper in the dirt they are working. I did a job just south of Des Moines with D7 and 435 scrapers, a know it all was making fun of me and telling me he was going to blow me out of the way. I had to finsh his job after he went broke, Pull scraper will run when nothing else will.
Well Mcaninch definately has the money and they can run these rigs in muddier conditions... plus with out a blade up front wouldnt that lesson the UC wear or at least even it out? None the less its an impressive sight!! good video
pans are good for wet or rocky places when you dont have anything ealse too use, like being a poor owner operator. but running over 2 million pluse pulling pans.you have too have just spending money, not working money. more money than brains,630s on up would be better faster too move the dirt.
I used to run a 637 with a few other 37's push pull in missouri. Trust me, there is NO way in those soil conditions that you will move more dirt faster. That's a bigger pan, and that machine can pull through it much better than a 637 can.
I'm an operator my self but never run scraper but I would think that rubber tire double barrel scrapers would be cheaper in the long run what would be the benefit of this settup?
you are dead wrong. In these soil conditions this is a much cheaper/faster way. trust me i used to run a 637 in mid missouri(which is probably where this is at) The ground is rough, I would have killed for a setup like this. We would have to push load all the time with a D9 on the 37's and it took forever. With this setup, the pan can go deeper and the machine can pull right through it. Cheaper, and Faster. McAninch isn't the biggest for no reason, they know what they are doing.
Where are these working? Have used old cable scoops on D7s but nothing the size of these. In the right situation these would be more productive than wheel scoops. Prefer the feel of tracks under me, than the bounce of tires anyday.
Don't know who you're talking to....Refering to others as "boy" is kind of ignorant and shows a total lack of any class....Regarding the subject: Everything has its place, I heard the guy that put these D11's together pulling scrapers is actually doing quite well
You are right I have no idea what I am talking about I must be an idiot, 3 generations of my family run iron, obviously they don't know what they were doing either, the owner of these machines that laid out millions must run them pro-bono just to watch them go round and round, yep idiots also. I run buggy in northern conditions that would make you cry, but still I must have been an idiot because I lasted while the others quit. You don't know me, don't ever assume you do.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yep, I know who you are: The guy on the packer that does all the talking.
I no longer have to assume you are an idiot, you have proved it. If you are third generation of running iron, you are obviously not smart enough to get off anything painted yellow.
And, yes, laying out millions to run a D11 without a blade on it is the biggest waste of money ever.
If you worked in the North, then you must know who Morley is.
Get over yourself, if you don't have anything positive to say then just keep it to youself, ya I run packer, LOL, I don't sit in the seat anymore, but if you are suggesting those who do are beneath you contempt then I feel sorry for you. There is one way to gain the respect you so obviously crave...post some videos and show the world just how much you know...no don't want to do that?...your profile proves you are just another faceless, cowardly user (loser) who really doesn't matter.
Thank you for putting this up, I had heard of these machines but never thought I would see them in action, 3rd gear on tracks makes me cringe though LOL!
What a waste.

I'm an operator my self but never run scraper but I would think that rubber tire double barrel scrapers would be cheaper in the long run what would be the benefit of this settup?
rageridersrx 3 years ago 2
No benefit whatsoever.
On this short of a haul, two 631's and a D10 will move more dirt than this goofy setup. Not to mention the 31's can do a way cleaner job.
Anyone who has ever operated a buggy knows what I'm talking about.
ExMxer 3 years ago
you are dead wrong.

Prefer the feel of tracks under me, than the bounce of tires anyday.

yes they are doing very well,the last count was 5xD11R & 651,10xD10R & 641,13xD9L & 631,
and 28xD9R & 463 scrapers, not bad eh

Boy, you aint learned yet.
Ever heard of a 657?
You have absolutely no idea how to move dirt.
ExMxer 3 years ago
Don't know who you're talking to....Refering to others as "boy" is kind of ignorant and shows a total lack of any class....Regarding the subject: Everything has its place, I heard the guy that put these D11's together pulling scrapers is actually doing quite well

Morley Foss (R.I.P.) who was the World's Greatest Buggy Skinner would simply say "Boy, you aint learned yet"
And you, are a complete idiot. Anyone who has ever run iron would cringe at seeing a D11 being "driven".
ExMxer 3 years ago
You are right I have no idea what I am talking about I must be an idiot, 3 generations of my family run iron, obviously they don't know what they were doing either, the owner of these machines that laid out millions must run them pro-bono just to watch them go round and round, yep idiots also. I run buggy in northern conditions that would make you cry, but still I must have been an idiot because I lasted while the others quit. You don't know me, don't ever assume you do.

And, just where did you go? I see your account is closed.

Thank you for putting this up, I had heard of these machines but never thought I would see them in action, 3rd gear on tracks makes me cringe though LOL!
woofybigj 3 years ago
If Cat did not design it to run 3rd gear do you honestly think they would not put it in there?
