I have loved Mario Lanza all my life lol, from the 50s and have never found anyone to match up to him, but Russell Watson comes very close. I just love his music, and this beautiful song.
Russell Watson is an amazing and unforgettable talent....I think quite possibly the best voice I've heard....and just as impressive is how eclectic he is....opera, standards, pop, spititual. WOW!!
I've been a huge fan of Mario Lanza for years and I have never heard anyone who could come close to him - until I heard Russell Watson. No one will ever take Mario's place in my heart but Russell comes a close second.
I first heard this song as a teenager in the 1950s, and was moved to tears. I have just listened to this version by Russell Watson. Do you know, those same tears returned. Beautiful!
Thank You Mr Franco. Still holding in there and will have 54 Anniversary in May but always have the list handy. i hope you are hanging in there as my 99 yr. old Mother said in her last 25 years on this planet. God Bless
I really didn't want to like this. I have nothing against RW, smashing bloke. However, this version is much better than I thought it was going to be with a very nice ending. Well done
Just love this, so beautiful and I think Russell sings it beautifully.I have just listened to Mario Lanza's version on an old 48rpm on youtube and commented at the age of 14 I wanted to be an opera singer and Mario was my idol.Thought he was the best ( as a 14 year old what did I know) but listening to him and the old technology he did sing this song so well.I think both men have their own style but both worthy of praise.I'm 72 now did'nt get to be an opera singer still love to sing.Thank you
This song is sung so beautifully. My 11 year old daughter will be singing this song in early September to celebrate a 50th priesthood anniversary (a very close friend of the family). She sings it beatifully. Please watch for her in early to mid Sep on youtube.
I am making up songs for my departure from this earth. Had decided on Mario Lanza's version of this song until I heard yours. God has certainly gifted you. . You have the strength but the gentleness comes through also. Thank you so much
@JPC2007ANGEL Patty, same here. Another song that is beautiful is "Going Home' on piano and it shows the words which I am going to have printed as part of the program.
@pettyduo1957 Yes, I too appreciate Mario Lanza's interpretation. It is powerful and dramatic. Watson's interpretation is heartfelt and brings appreciation.
I think I was a little harsh before. Russell sings this very well. I was (unfairly) comparing his version to Lanzas. There is no comparison but bravo Russ, nice
i have sung this song many times performing in "the Student Prince" at the Heidelberg Castle in Germany.....I could not have done it any better!!!! Mario Lanza would be very proud!!!
@jrsinger78 When did you sing it at the Heidelberg Castle? I was at a show in 2000 and might have heard you. As I walked around Heidelberg I kept hearing the "Serenade"--lucky for the people around I wasn't singing it as I can't hit the high notes.
I am already on the 3rd albumcd of RW and 2 dvd's yet I don't know that he has his own version of this ML classic. Lanza is Lanza, I had collection of his records and cds that I can lay my hands on, but RW did justice to this song as well.
This is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. I have wonderful memories of Mario Lanza singing this and I learned this on the piano. Don't be concerned with those that do not appreciate fine music. I am with you on this one.
Here I find his singing cheesy. All of it strikes me as very commercial and not heartfelt and I'm just not too keen on that breathy, weak sound he produces in combination with that sliding between notes thing. I also find his vibrato artificial and old fashioned (not in a good way). Also his poor technique makes him pronounce God 'Gaaaad'. I find it odd that nobody had the sense or knowledge to point this out to him. What do you think?
Cocky? Explain please. This song was written for the Mario Lanza's film "Student Prince" in the early 1950's. Lanza's rendition was much more powerful.... is that what you mean by "cocky'?.
im sorry i didnt explain. Its not the song i dont like, because its sublime and amazing, its russell watson that i hate, i have seen some performances of him and actually seen him in person and he is very cocky and very stupid he doesnt respect anyone and thinks he is better than many people. That is my observation im sorry if i offended you in some way
Incredible..how can you conclude that from one of a few thousand people viewing him from on-stage.? I think he is also well aware of his future, is probably bitter that God has limited his power as a performer, but from what I've read from his web site, I really don't think he is "stupid".

You don't hit the song hard and strong - you have a nice delicacy that is most appealing. You also have a great tone and feeling for the lyric.
I am impressed with you and congratulate you .

In the midst of all the unrest and hatred in the world it is times and music like this that make
the world a more peaceful and serene place in which to live, love and laugh. Russell Watson has the voice to soothe even the most savage
beast as it were. This is my first introduction to
Mr. Watson and I must say, it will be a lasting relationship if all of his music is this beautiful.
Thank you and God bless. You have made my day more beautiful. aka Earth Angel in Wisconsin.
