The police operate in groups against individuals. They have superior numbers, nearly always superior weaponry and training, they have time to plan, and they have the element of surprise. Yet, they do everything they can to avoid sharing even a small amount of the risk.

Yet, when a single person acts against them, he's the coward and they're surprised, hurt, upset, incredulous that someone would do that.
I just saw a decent example of this mindset (and the need to shatter it) on an episode of Star Trek:DS9.

It's fresh in my mind because I just saw the episode again and I was really glad they did that.

Same way it went down last month in Tucson for 26 year old Marine Jose Guerena. His wife told him a shadow of a person just ran by the side window. He told her and his son to hide in the bedroom thinking they were about to be robbed or harmed. He got out his AR nd was shot dead wile the gun was on safety and never pointing it toward anyone. Herealized it was the police and never got te chance to put it down. He was shot 60+ times including while on the ground from the first few.
