Love ELO, but I must say this vid has two very different parts of a very different kind: Great Balls Of Fire just feels like a filler after that amazing performance of In The Hall... A basic rock and roll classic, covered to the piont of nausea is an anticlimax to a progressive symphonic rock rendition of a work by Grieg. The r'n'r number is too unimpresive after the first theme.
this looks great, i wish they would re-band and sing all the songs on three light years and put it on DVd it would be fantastic, some of the newer songs, seem to have lost their way, face the music, elderado, etc on dvd lots of strings******
Got to see them in Greensboro, NC when the spaceship opened up and they rose up from under the stage (you just had to see it). Their music and antics enhanced my already enhanced head.
In the hall of the mountain king performed by Electric Light Orchestra is without doubts my favorite song/ theme ever with no contest and without a question. I love it. And the most funny thing is that I came across it because of M, a most see film directed by Fritz Lang; and there it scared me a bit; then I found out wich theme was and came across with the ELO version and I simple fell in love with it. IT is just wonderful. Thanks a lot for posting this.
I really don't see the point of a violin and two cellos if all you can hear through most of the song is guitar, bass and drums. If that's the case, you might as well listen to the Who's version.
ps. so this is where Primus "borrowed" their bridge for their cover of Daniels' "Devil went down to Georgia"
and apocalyptica, you just got a man in a pink shirt and purple pants slam his member in your face..... Juvenile...perhaps.... but deliciously evil nonetheless
a norwegian composer who lived from 1843 to 1907. 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' appears in his Peer Gynt Suite- a soundtrack actually to Henrik Ibsen's five act play 'Peer Gynt'.-
This is an amazing video, one of my fav ELO vids, nobody did this stuff live before or since (true & ironic as it is 2 covers) and for that alone they deserve massive respect (nevermind for the countless other amazing songs/albums they made).
I dispare at music now, I am young and I don't think any bands would cite ELO as inspiration, which is a shame. With all of the studio/electro capabilities of today an ELO influenced band would clean up!
Absolutely amazing!!! In the Hall of the Mountain King was always one of my favorite ELO songs, but I never realized there was any footage of them performing it, live or otherwise. Anyone who questions the quality of this performance need only to listen to the studio version to see what an obviously difficult piece this is. ELO FOREVER!!
It funny how the Brits would lose their accents when they sang. In the 60's with the British invasion that always amazed me and of course, now I am just used to it.
@thehomieDaniel They were spectacular live during this period, this clip just gives you a taste, they had a green laser effect on a version of the Flight Of The Bumblebee that was awesome. Saw them in 1976 at Illinois State University and was one of the best shows I ever saw.
wow that was fun, havnt heard em doing jerry lee lewis, jeff even sounded abit like him, mels a card!, actually 70s fashion came in a cple yrs ago n is still here.
mik was about v last muso 2 leave v band was still playing last year as elo2, aparently he was from a russian orchestra, he had some classic riffs that really placed elo apart from v others,.cheers
I'm in love with ELO (especially with the revolutionally musician Jeff Lynne, somehow underrated, sorry to say that), but this piece sounds like a garage band. Wonder if the perfectionist had ever been happy with that.
I always hated this song. It's obviously a cheap attempt to capitalize on the success of "Roll Over Beethoven." It reminds me of one of those crappy disco covers of the classics like a "Fifth Of Beethoven."
Their early logo was pretty cool- it was adapted from the "GE"(General Electric) logo. It's on their '73 album "On The Third Day". The final logo was of course designed after the classic Wurlitzer jukebox cabinet- then morphing into their spaceship.
Let's face it. When it became the Jeff Lynne Project, it became more about him and less about the rest of the band. They guys got older, but Jeff treated them with less respect-probably encouraged by Don Arden. The string section is fired by a letter. Classy. Jeff turns down Knebworth to do Xanadu. What??? Then Kelly is told Jeff wants to kill ELO with no retirement package, and then he sues Lynne. The decline of ELO was one monumental mistake after another.
Jeff Lyne was amazing, but even an amazing leader needs and amazing team as only man has 2 hands. So what made Jeff become like that? Didnt he realize the strength of his team. I mean everyone was awesome.
My gosh if that's the case then it's just another example of an artist not understanding how much something means to their audience! I mean, you write for yourself sure, but don't fix it if it's not broken! Now with Kelly gone, they can't have a reunion with the line up that really sticks out in people's minds. There were enough different members in the band to replace him if they did indeed reunite, but most remember Kelly as being a member when they really hit the big time!
Agree- cellist Hugh McDowell was the star of ELO's live shows. He's the one who danced around(& spun around) with his amplified cello. I think ELO went downhill after '79's "Discovery" disc- they embraced the disco era- dropping the string players + going with an electronic sound. Real shame- since they were my favorite.
The thing about getting old is that you forget about all the great music that you grew up with - Thank God for YOUTUBE - Thanks for posting you put a smile on a rough day
I have loved ELO since I was a kid, but I do have to comment: their clothing is HYSTERICAL! It's a wonder those poor guys could procreate after wearing those pants so tight on their crotches! *LOL*

I am a big ELO fan of long ago. I loved the way Hugh prowls the stage with his cello in hand like a shark. Quite the showman, and considering he's playing rock with a cello on stage, he is certainly setting a great mark.
Playing devils advocate here, could maybe one of the reasons Mike Edwards left was because of Hugh's antics? He does seem to only play his cello in the background not drawing much attention to himself. Maybe Mike came to the conclusion he'd rather be doing something more serious.
Nah, Edwards has often stated he left to pursue his then newfound Buddhist faith. He even changed his name to Deva Pramada. I mean, although Hugh was an animal on-stage, Edwards was the guy playing his cello with an orange and putting on silly clothes. I don't think he was that serious.
I saw ELO around this time at Chatham Central Hall - first ever gig for me. I clearly remember that crazy cellist - he even took to playing his cello on top of the one of the speakers that night. Great stuff though - early ELO is too often overlooked. By the early 1980's they weren't half the band of previous years.
Yeah great band in the earlier days with Michael d'Albuquerque on the bass guitar (who according to Bev's book, farther was a Duke or something)I saw around this time and was blown away by them, later on the albums outstripped what they could do onstage.
excellent! XD

Playing devils advocate here, could maybe one of the reasons Mike Edwards left was because of Hugh's antics? He does seem to only play his cello in the background not drawing much attention to himself. Maybe Mike came to the conclusion he'd rather be doing something more serious.

Great live performance. ELO would never sound live quite well like those times with Mike Edwards, perhaps... definetly this lineup is my favorite.

When Mike Edwards left ELO he left music at the same time for a while and became Buddhist. This information is caught from the 2CD ELO 2 Remastered.

I would say that after the time album they wern't "half the band they once were."

Yeah great band in the earlier days with Michael d'Albuquerque on the bass guitar (who according to Bev's book, farther was a Duke or something)I saw around this time and was blown away by them, later on the albums outstripped what they could do onstage.
