  • excellent! XD

  • Música Atomica!!

  • If Rolling Stone did a Top 100 rock violinists, Mik Kaminski would be #1, no doubt!

  • Love ELO, but I must say this vid has two very different parts of a very different kind: Great Balls Of Fire just feels like a filler after that amazing performance of In The Hall... A basic rock and roll classic, covered to the piont of nausea is an anticlimax to a progressive symphonic rock rendition of a work by Grieg. The r'n'r number is too unimpresive after the first theme.

  • THIS IS BRILLIANT.... Always loved this version and never saw it live... Thanks

  • As a Norwegian I grew up with Griegs music, and I must say this is an interesting version of the piece.

  • Thatt dude plays the hell out of the cello 6:00. Rock that cello.

  • :'D I CAN PLAY THIS ON THE XYLOPHONE

  • this looks great, i wish they would re-band and sing all the songs on three light years and put it on DVd it would be fantastic, some of the newer songs, seem to have lost their way, face the music, elderado, etc on dvd lots of strings******

  • Got to see them in Greensboro, NC when the spaceship opened up and they rose up from under the stage (you just had to see it). Their music and antics enhanced my already enhanced head.

  • fuk Apokalyptica,,this is the real shit..

  • the kids to day should have the sound of violins in thier bandsnot just a couple of guitars it would sound so much richer for them

  • only a guy dressed in all purple can walk around and play cello at the same time

  • In the hall of the mountain king performed by Electric Light Orchestra is without doubts my favorite song/ theme ever with no contest and without a question. I love it. And the most funny thing is that I came across it because of M, a most see film directed by Fritz Lang; and there it scared me a bit; then I found out wich theme was and came across with the ELO version and I simple fell in love with it. IT is just wonderful. Thanks a lot for posting this.

  • @DamnQuilty It's just an "ok" song. :-)

  • @Nigelxman Its a matter of taste

  • 1:13 - 8:00 lo mejor!!!! amazing

  • Imagine ELO doing Turkey in the Straw!!!LOL

  • años buscando la primera version rock in the hall of the mountain king

y ke saben de los pantalones moraos ajajjajaa

los metaleros de ahora somos una burla para la musica

    :D

  • some applaud... that was fucking amazing!

  • Electric Light Orchestra and The Nice were both my introductions to classical music when I was very young.

  • I really don't see the point of a violin and two cellos if all you can hear through most of the song is guitar, bass and drums. If that's the case, you might as well listen to the Who's version.

  • @toskoramone prick

  • only ELO can rock with a guy dressed in a tux.

  • well idk bout the rest of the vid, but the part from 0:00 to 8:02 was some of the best music i've ever seen.

  • @Everyman1337 very original!

  • Goodness gracious Grieg's Balls of Fire !!!

ps. so this is where Primus "borrowed" their bridge for their cover of Daniels' "Devil went down to Georgia"

and apocalyptica, you just got a man in a pink shirt and purple pants slam his member in your face..... Juvenile...perhaps.... but deliciously evil nonetheless

    >: )

  • ELO was far ahead of thier time. An amazing group of highly stoned players that performed at the "highest" level. Great stuff.

  • Hugh McDowell sure can ham it up on the cello.

  • dammed hippies!!! vat ar dey doin to a great masterpiece?!?!

  • THE BASs PLAYER IS FUN :-)

  • @59mar

the guy in the purple dancing around is a cellist--the bassist is wearing white and is standing pretty much still

  • wow. I seriously had my doubts, but this is bad ass, even by todays standards.

  • holy shit, this is actual music. haven't heard it in a while

  • MUSIC BY RAIMBOW!

  • @TheBilythekingable

    noooo my boy !.-) it's by Edvard Grieg ;

a norwegian composer who lived from 1843 to 1907. 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' appears in his Peer Gynt Suite- a soundtrack actually to Henrik Ibsen's five act play 'Peer Gynt'.-

  • ELO.. you are such badasses. The most underrated band ever...

  • Everything they do is just fun!

  • Bethoven would love it as would Mozart

  • What you guys really need to get a hold of is ELO'S album "The Night the Light Went on in Long Beach" Total mind blower...and all live on stage.

  • music comes ez 2 muscians, theoretical physics doesn't come ez to physists...I assume

  • Einstein was a genius Tandy was an excellent muscian,I hear he couldn't butter toast :)

  • Richard Tandy is genius

  • R.I.P Mike Edwards.

  • RIP, Mike Edwards. You are missed.

  • RIP, Mike Edwards. You are missed.

  • R.I.P., Mike Edwards. You are missed.

  • Rest in peace, Michael Edwards...an extraordinary cellist.

  • I have this album. I could be wrong but I think It was their first.

  • @sallyswell This is off "On the Third Day", their third album

  • Absolutely amazing!!! In the Hall of the Mountain King was always one of my favorite ELO songs, but I never realized there was any footage of them performing it, live or otherwise. Anyone who questions the quality of this performance need only to listen to the studio version to see what an obviously difficult piece this is. ELO FOREVER!!

  • i like this. It retains the sinister aspect, mainly down to the piano to be fair

  • wow, they ruined it beyond recognition. A for effort though. A really coo performance is by Appocolyptica.

  • @madmax98 don't be such a bloody wanker! Both versions have such a different sound so one can't say the other is truly better.

  • that was a sweet transition

  • love this song...love the band...oooooooooh yeah....enjoying with Ommegang Witte

  • Enjoyed that VERY much! Thanks for the post!

  • unbeatable ELO.

  • I love this and I'm sorry for nearly breaking protocol for digressing, but In The Hall of The Mountain King reminds me SOO much of Inspector Gadget.

  • Jeff sounds like Jerry Lee

  • ha. INTENSE.

  • Brilliant. I still like the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow one.

  • very much like the old grey whistle test from the uk.

  • It funny how the Brits would lose their accents when they sang. In the 60's with the British invasion that always amazed me and of course, now I am just used to it.

  • i prefer lewis version

  • ELO meets ELP, with a generous helping of the mighty Kansas.............

  • Sick ass cover

  • @thehomieDaniel They were spectacular live during this period, this clip just gives you a taste, they had a green laser effect on a version of the Flight Of The Bumblebee that was awesome. Saw them in 1976 at Illinois State University and was one of the best shows I ever saw.

  • Awesome!!!

  • That chelist is fucking crazy o.o

The best cover of Great Balls, is ELOs version!!!!

And Jeff Lynne is the best musician ever!!!

  • wow that was fun, havnt heard em doing jerry lee lewis, jeff even sounded abit like him, mels a card!, actually 70s fashion came in a cple yrs ago n is still here.

mik was about v last muso 2 leave v band was still playing last year as elo2, aparently he was from a russian orchestra, he had some classic riffs that really placed elo apart from v others,.cheers

  • I'm in love with ELO (especially with the revolutionally musician Jeff Lynne, somehow underrated, sorry to say that), but this piece sounds like a garage band. Wonder if the perfectionist had ever been happy with that.

    But-- anyways... Roll over, Beethoven!

  • love this

  • If you want to see maybe the kickingest ass cover for this, go see Apocolyptica's head banger version. I can't imagine anyone topping that.

That said, this one is damned fine.

  • if you like this tune then check out how my band combines it with the inspector gadget theme...

  • wow the drum roll at 1:30 is so cool i cant think of a better one. let me know if anyone can

  • Cristina B. Solo to mój ulubiony hit z wczesnych lat 70-tych

  • Mad music both!

    B¬D

  • I've always loved ELO's version of this. The live version on the album "The Night The Light Went On In Long Beach" is cool.

  • inspector gadget?

    O.o

  • its similar, but not the same.

The original of this song came first.

  • check out my bands inspector gadget video we combined both of these....

  • Great Classic ELO this is a rare clip bring back the 70s

  • It sounds so much better than in the original LP!

  • Edvard Grieg was a citizen of norway, while being of Scottish blood. So you should be disappointed.

  • Loads of people have done it, and this isn't the worst. Why did you watch this if you didn't like it anyway?

  • With all due respect, they look like chaches. They're lucky if they ever had kids, pinching their nuts like that.

  • A good reason 70's fashion should never come back. These guys have actual musical talent compared to the majority of todays cRap.

  • Gosh, such memories...seeing him on that stage, anyone know what happened to Kelly Grouchet ?

  • Died in Feb 2009

  • jeff lynne w/o his ever-present "i'm not a stoned rock 'n rolla" sunglasses! sweet!

  • @kevinmichaelwilliams Yes, sweet! Never knew the name of those sunglasses. Thanks. Now I'll be able to buy some.

  • @mouhot be sure to pick up some "your daughter may be safe but your wife's in for some trouble" pants to complete your assemble!

  • its kk for some but not me!!!!!!!!

  • I had a pair or pants that tight. Spent 40 bucks on them and ended up wearing 10 buck of them up my ass.

  • Have you seen the guy with the white cello? He must be Apocalyptica's dad...

  • Well if you hate it so much why bother clicking on the link then you idiot???!

  • LoooL...THX for this coment ;)

  • My pleasure, i've had enough of peeps dissin ELO!

  • hippies

  • Rougher than Grieg, but E.G. was Thoughest of e'm all...

  • they go so hard on this song...amazing.

  • ELO fantastic!!!

  • idiot.

  • Where did Jeff Lynne lose his sense of humour in the later ELO days.

Compare the performances in this show

to the video- clips of Discovery, for example.

  • lol "discography"...i meant to the album discovery.

    sorry for that.

  • this is absolutly genius.

in my opinion, the early era of ELO is far better that the pop era from discography thru the 80..

    tnx for this.

  • It's seeing stuff like this that really blows my mind. Early ELO is brilliiant!!

    Thankyou!

  • Yes, Jeff Lynne is a long-time sufferer of leaderitis, a fact painfully obvious from Out Of the Blue. He's good, though. yeah

  • Their early logo was pretty cool- it was adapted from the "GE"(General Electric) logo. It's on their '73 album "On The Third Day". The final logo was of course designed after the classic Wurlitzer jukebox cabinet- then morphing into their spaceship.

  • Jeff is a musical genius, no doubt about it, and the band played soooo well together. Too bad they are not still performing.

  • CLASSICAL + ROCK = ELO = JEFF LYNNE = ABSOLUTE GENIUS!!!

KG you are gone but not forgotten

    ELO forever!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

  • loved ELO 4ever-brings back good memories-question is "Were they the pre-curser of TSO?"

  • Let's face it. When it became the Jeff Lynne Project, it became more about him and less about the rest of the band. They guys got older, but Jeff treated them with less respect-probably encouraged by Don Arden. The string section is fired by a letter. Classy. Jeff turns down Knebworth to do Xanadu. What??? Then Kelly is told Jeff wants to kill ELO with no retirement package, and then he sues Lynne. The decline of ELO was one monumental mistake after another.

  • Jeff Lyne was amazing, but even an amazing leader needs and amazing team as only man has 2 hands. So what made Jeff become like that? Didnt he realize the strength of his team. I mean everyone was awesome.

  • My gosh if that's the case then it's just another example of an artist not understanding how much something means to their audience! I mean, you write for yourself sure, but don't fix it if it's not broken! Now with Kelly gone, they can't have a reunion with the line up that really sticks out in people's minds. There were enough different members in the band to replace him if they did indeed reunite, but most remember Kelly as being a member when they really hit the big time!

  • Agree- cellist Hugh McDowell was the star of ELO's live shows. He's the one who danced around(& spun around) with his amplified cello. I think ELO went downhill after '79's "Discovery" disc- they embraced the disco era- dropping the string players + going with an electronic sound. Real shame- since they were my favorite.

  • great video capture.

i wonder what happend to the violinist, he knows his job

  • The thing about getting old is that you forget about all the great music that you grew up with - Thank God for YOUTUBE - Thanks for posting you put a smile on a rough day

  • ELO pwn plus a pwn song= TTL PWN

  • I have loved ELO since I was a kid, but I do have to comment: their clothing is HYSTERICAL! It's a wonder those poor guys could procreate after wearing those pants so tight on their crotches! *LOL*

  • Goddamn. This is MUSIC like it was always meant to be.....

  • In the days Electric Light Orchestra was

    still a real rock band.

Later it became more and more

a Jeff Lynne project. This doesn´t mean

that the music later would have been any worse.

  • well actually almost every song was written by Jeff

  • Ugh I love Jeff, and, he wrote a lot of music, but he did not write this

And there were others they recorded he did not write

  • Fucking brilliant!

  • E L O rocks

  • sooooooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooood

  • I'm a monster Jeff Lynne/ELO fan. I like everything, including this. I definately don't think it's Jeff's best work, but as a fan it's really cool to see them this early on. I'm guessing this is a rehersal for a TV show that was about to take place? It seems they were rehersing for sure. Long live ELO and i cant wait for the next JL release. Guess it's going to be Joe Walsh's new album. wish he'd do an indie band like us!!!!

  • This wasn't a rehearsel for a tv show...

    this was the tv show...

without audience sounds pretty lame! :)

  • In fact this song was prepared to be a new ELO single in shorter version. But after

Roll over Beethoven it was shut down. Not

to have a image of a band who makes covers.

  • Fan freakin tastic!!! Thanks for sharing!

  • now beat THIS apocalyptica xDD

  • this live version is amazing!!! ELO, one of the biggest bands in rock history

  • Look in the mirrior my friend and you shall find your answer

  • FAN VA BRA!!!!!

  • what you say?!

  • FAN VA BRA!!!!! is Swedish and in English it means; DAMN GOOD!

  • @dokkie2 He said "Damn this is good" :)

  • YEAHHH......"FAN VA BRA"....

  • Really kicks ass when it finally starts, ELO can do whatever they want if they want to. :)

  • yeah! excellent, and then there was zoom!,get the band back Jeff. What a fantastic video!

  • Well said

  • great

  • Love the minimoog at the begining. ELO is a great band! Thanks for posting.

  • I'm really interested in your comment...I've always been a bit disappointed that some of the songs are obviously mimed eg the opening and standing in the rain (which is probably impossible to do live anyway). But if what you say is true I will look out for the remastered video.

Funnily I think some tracks eg Turn to Stone are better live cos the album version is overproduced for such a great simple rock tune.

  • That was simply classic ELO.I had to watch it 3 times in a row !!

  • Did I hear a little Baba O'Reily in that fiddle solo?

  • I know that Crazy Cellist (Hugh A. McDowell). In fact, I've been to his residence a few times. STILL CRAZY TOO!

  • I am a big ELO fan of long ago. I loved the way Hugh prowls the stage with his cello in hand like a shark. Quite the showman, and considering he's playing rock with a cello on stage, he is certainly setting a great mark.

  • Playing devils advocate here, could maybe one of the reasons Mike Edwards left was because of Hugh's antics? He does seem to only play his cello in the background not drawing much attention to himself. Maybe Mike came to the conclusion he'd rather be doing something more serious.

  • Great live performance. ELO would never sound live quite well like those times with Mike Edwards, perhaps... definetly this lineup is my favorite.

  • Nah, Edwards has often stated he left to pursue his then newfound Buddhist faith. He even changed his name to Deva Pramada. I mean, although Hugh was an animal on-stage, Edwards was the guy playing his cello with an orange and putting on silly clothes. I don't think he was that serious.

  • When Mike Edwards left ELO he left music at the same time for a while and became Buddhist. This information is caught from the 2CD ELO 2 Remastered.

  • I saw ELO around this time at Chatham Central Hall - first ever gig for me. I clearly remember that crazy cellist - he even took to playing his cello on top of the one of the speakers that night. Great stuff though - early ELO is too often overlooked. By the early 1980's they weren't half the band of previous years.

  • I would say that after the time album they wern't "half the band they once were."

  • Yeah great band in the earlier days with Michael d'Albuquerque on the bass guitar (who according to Bev's book, farther was a Duke or something)I saw around this time and was blown away by them, later on the albums outstripped what they could do onstage.

  • Awesome song. Check out the Who's version from The Who Sell Out.

  • i like how they have the break that separates the intro and the main part...

  • Did they really mime during the Out of the Blue TOUR IN 77-78?

  • No thats an urban myth, ELO were a fine Live band considering the instruments used, Groundbreaking!

  • I wish i had purple silk pants...

  • I love how they just go into the main groove of the song after the intro!

  • c'est une première pour moi, je ne connaissais pas ce morceau. super

    merci dokkie2

  • They played this live!!!(at least it seems)

  • hoy!hoy!hoy! zella y fajole slana reepa y palenta...hoy!hoy!hoy! itsa family thang.

  • haha this is classic.

  • So bad ass - I had no idea they ever did HOTMK!

  • What incredible diversity!
