The problem is that without the proper balance of bacteria and other micro organisms there is waste produced that does not neutralize and builds up. The poor Opae Ula used in these things usually die a slow death do to poisoning.
I bought one of the large ecospheres (about 6" diameter), it lasted 2 years. I filled a simple soda bottle with pondwater, and I still have stuff swimming around in it after 4 years. Those ecospheres are pretty interesting, but not really worth the $150+ price they're asking for.
Cool! Seems to be doing quite well.
