IMO both sides should quit arguing and get back to playing. Both Steve & Mike are great drummers. If you don't dig one guy over another, fine, but why bother arguing over it or even debating it. It's all music guys, be happy we have it at our disposal.
The vid washot with a Canon 7D. Audio was recorded with an Edirol rh09 portable audio recorder, plus a plugin-mic direct to the 7D (don't have the name handy, sorry).
Steve Holmes is an incredible drummer, and does great things for the drum community. I love his site and ive learned more from him and the members of his forum (for free, no less) than I ever learned from any other place on the web.
@thelinedrummer I had to come back to this comment: "He's doing things people haven't done before on the drums." Three words: Expand. Your. Horizons. If you need a list of truly revolutionary drummers, I'd be happy to provide you with a list of about 100, all of which I'm positive MJ would say inspired him.
@thelinedrummer Man, I can't tell if you're serious or not. I like Mike. I've exchanged an e-mail or two with him. But he didn't invent the drums. LOL Steve's about the same age and has somehow learned how to play without MJ's help, so maybe leave MJ out of the conversation on these threads? Just an observation. hehe Good gravy... God bless YouTube ... LOL
@gaddmatt have you SEEN the way Mike plays? He's doing things people haven't done before on the drums. Name me another drummer who can do all the things he does.
@thelinedrummer I hate comparing, but jojo is an influence to mike and mike drops his name a bunch they respect each other. and no drummer is alike especially mike or jojo. jojo can do shit I guarntee mike can do and vice versa and they would both admit it.
@AROBcyprus to "thelinedrummer, you are misguided and have fallen for Mike Johnston's BS marketing. I say this without doubt, because I fell for the same thing. I posted the EXACT SAME CRAP you did, about how Mike is the best, most innovative, influential drummer in the world. Believe me when I say that once I opened my eyes, I realized Mike is misleading on purpose. He sells his videos and wants people like you to do what you're doing. JoJo mayer is EASILY 20x the drummer Mike is. Easily
@drumpersonn I have been drumming since before I can physically remember and studied with several really top-call and class well known drummers - Mike Johnston is right up there. Jojo Mayer also has like 15 years on a younger dude like Mike.
Jojo Mayer and guys like Mr. Colaiuta and Weckl are much more rounded out now...Mike is beginning that now in his early 30s years old...
Buddy Rich for ex was a far superior drummer at 73 than 33....Jojo much improved at 47 compared to 27..etc
@drumpersonn You obviously have no idea about Mike Johnston at all and your comment makes you look like an idiot. He's one of the most humble drummers I've ever witnessed, and he's all about supporting other drummers to help them grow.
@FaithIsAccidental lol, OK, You must have missed his humbleness when he went to HouseofDrumming and insulted Steve, and many of the members there. He got real nasty and went on about how he has spies watching the site and reporting back to him. He called Steve names and told him that he's becoming irrelevant, and THEN a day later went back and changed his posts. Dont believe me? Well, Its all true. So, sorry to say, but its YOU who have no idea about Mike, so shame on you for being misled.
@FaithIsAccidental Speaking of humble, Steve Holmes was extremely humble when he gave Mike every opportunity to redeem himself and take back the things he said. Mike was too dumb to realize this, and continued to hang himself, to the point where HOD members were really starting to question whether Mike was drunk or was actually suffering a mental meltdown.
@FaithIsAccidental Mike went to the forum to promote a lesson, and when people offered suggestions on making it better, Mike got VERY mad, saying that unless they could do better, they should not criticize him. He didnt realize that HOD has what is likely the most well-educated drum community, as well as big name players, and he basically went down in flames while trying to insult them, saying they're outdated, and that he (Mike) can show them how to run a real web site. It was embarrassing.
@AROBcyprus well I'm not trying to put down mike by comparing to jojo, they are two different drummers with different career types and both respect each other, I assume. any way steve is a great drummer and I don't care if he isn't doing anything new he is great at what he loves and he willing to show all of us "self-proclaimed" experts that when it comes to drumming steve can hold his own and more
@thelinedrummer Who cares dude, I can dig steve just doing hat, snare and bass than some dude playing a million notes per second , its all about essence and expresion not about who plays more complicated stuff.
@thelinedrummer I'm one of Mikes students and I know that if he read ur posts right now he'd be really disappointing. he is ALWAYS about supporting our drumming community and telling each of us to help eachother grow rather than comparing each person to another. You're statements are really sad to read because I can see that you probably have learned nothing from the drummer you adore so much.
@thelinedrummer What is this, a pissing contest or are we learning the drums? Seriously man, every channel I go to and see your comments, you're trolling. Mike is a fantastic educator and an innovator in the "online drum lesson" segment of our world...but come on, he doesn't have the copyright. I love the fact that there are killer players like Steve (and Mike) posting lessons for us to learn from. Spend more time on the kit and less time at the keyboard trolling man.
Bro, listen, I think you're ok, but why all of a sudden is everyone releasing drum videos? Mike Johnston crushes you in every aspect of playing; so stop trying to compete with him. He's been teaching this stuff for years now, at least give him some credit.
Thru 4 minutes and no blushda...oh...there it is at 7:02...nice. I can only do this at home when my wife is out...or when I want her out. I do it during soundcheck until someone says, "hey rob...it works"...after about 30 seconds. Wish I had a drum cave.
sometimes is not even minimally with the metronome
