If I buy this game, will I need to buy a joystick?
BTW, I have never bought a Flight Simulator Game, and this looks very complex. I am mostly getting this for um... "education" purposes. I really love the A-10, and should I get this game, even If it is hard to learn at the start?
I wish this had a more 'arcade' mode. I love the idea of this, and it's exactly what I want, but I don't want to have to spend 10 minutes hunting down all the little switches in the cockpit to take off, or watch hours of tutorial videos to understand the very basic concepts...
@CyclonicTuna023 If you want to fly it properly you have to be prepared to put in a LOT of time to learn the functions of the avionics, weapons systems etc. It simulates everything as it works in the real plane. If you want something simpler then maybe try a historical sim like Rise of Flight or IL2 Cliffs of Dover (apparently it's not so bad after much patching but I haven't tried it)

After playing Lock on flaming cliffs 2 I found out that the guys from Eagle Dynamics are very bad businessman's...There was very poor marketing campaign, just one trailer which you barely can find. Effect's are same as 7 years ago, same planes...Nothing which will make you to buy a game!
@schillyschote85 I 100% agree. Arma does land/infantry well but DCS blows them out of the water flight sim wise making Arma look arcadish with it's flight models. Someday I envision a large scale sim with all of these merged into a persistent/dynamic large scale almost MMO type server.

@torque2802 for head tracking you might as well get v5 and the pro clip. this will give you the most accurate/slight of head movement making your experience better. I have no idea why you would want to buy obsolete hw? dcsac10 will give you the best graphics/fidelity. lock on will give you old sw with lots of planes. free falcon will give you old sw/dynamic campaigns, old gfx. only reason to play free falcon is dynamic. if you want the best...dscac10. no dynamic camp. but best!
@torque2802 try dsc first with simple joystick and AT LEAST head tracking. if you stick with A10, then get the replica TM WARTHOG setup as it will make the sim 50x easier to use and control. you can get through the basics of the sim with a simple joystick and head tracking, but when it comes to actual use, there is no substitute for the 'real' controls. again, makes the sim 50x more user friendly for fun/control/learning/realism/ease of operation. you NEED all TM WH buttons...
@torque2802 again it is 'possible' to do this without head tracking, and with a 'generic' HOTAS stick, or even simple stick (Logitec extreme 3D is how I started on this sim w no head track and mouse movement for head tracking). However, NOTHING compares to the ease of use with track ir 5 and the real replica controls. YES it can be done via keyboard/simple joystick, but no where near as quick/good/accurate as TMHW and TIR5. Anyone who's used TMWH+TIR5 can testify to this.
@torque2802 this sim isn't like MS flight sim where you can get by with simple controls, you really do need head tracking and proper HOTAS replica unless you are a masochist and are fine suffering though remembering 100's KB hot-keys vs just clicking 'a switch' on a proper control scheme. you will never truly understand how much better this sim is until you have the proper controls. again, this is built with the expectation (even in training) that you have this HW..without it=hard
@TheIzoul all your points are valid and i would love to have the setup you have got but that requires quite a bit of spare cash which i won't have unless i save but in 6months i'm off to uni so i will no longer have spare cash so i just want something that will satisfy my flight sim needs doesn't need to be incredibly easy/realistic, accurate and simple are about it so it will just be track ir or maybe free track cause tht does the same thing and i might get saitek x52 not a hotas x
@torque2802 Completely understand and respect that. Again I learned on very basic setup, and got basic knowledge to play the SIM. Track IR5 was my first upgrade and saved extra floating cash over about 4 months to get the TM setup. However, if I could 'go back in time' I'd get the TMWH ASAP, as it GREATLY increased my understanding of the system/usability of the SIM. You have to 'retrain' yourself with each upgrade! I hope to fly with you some day if you stick with it!
@torque2802 if you have good knowledge of flight/actual flight experience/flight sim experience, you can pull it off with a simple joystick, no track ir, and use mouse for head movement (or coolie hat on joystick). I guess you'll see over time. If you like what see, you will honestly struggle though the sim& the 'hunger' for the ACTUAL controls will grow. Really depends how much time you want to put into this. If you are only going to play it 10-20 hrs max, no need for upgrades.
@torque2802@torque2802 is a matter of stages:ie:mouse look for head movement:you can make it work, and then you try track ir5, and when you 'naturally' look around the cockpit to do your start up sequence clicking switches, you will say 'wow!.so much better, and the same applies to the actual flight stick/quadrant. I've said it again and again, and had to show friends in RL at my house the difference, and it's instant evidence even to new sim pilots that head tracking is a min must.
@TheIzoul i do plan on clocking up plenty of hours considering it is the holiday and all so 3weeks free to start then 2months in the summer so between now and then i will see what i can save and where i can save to get track ir 1st. It will possibly mean the near extinction of my social life as tht is what i spend the most on atm but it can wait a while, need to study hard anyway :P. @TheIzoul a simple example of 'china hat forward or aft SHORT or LONG' or TMS long left, etc, very hard to map into the human brain on most KB/simple joysticks, if not impossible thus limiting you to crucial commands than need to be executed 'real time and fast' to be truly combat effective vs just a free flight hovering the home plate...you want 'instant/natural' human controls...so hard to explain until you experience it I guess....hell even that startup engine sequence 'lifting' left eng 1.

@CyclonicTuna023 most dedicated 'quality' sims are this way = focus on 1 model. think falcon 3,4/realism mods, tornado, f117, 1990's janes series (new stuff is hoorific arcade non sense, don't even rent it) ms flight sim was 'neat' but doesn't hold a candle of fidelity/realism vs DCS AC10 or the above titles...just saying....
TrackIR really is a must to fully enjoy pretty much any flight sim, but you can do fine in A-10 with just a $25 joystick from Best Buy and most of the commands custom mapped around an FPS-style "W,A,S,D" kind of keyboard layout. That said, I'm still saving up for an X52 with the separate throttle.
i got my WH Hotas almost 1 year ago for this very sim, its still working flawlessly in any and all flight sims. Still pin sharp control on all axis. Its expensive yes but it makes your flying so much more fun.
in the credits it says after effects were used...other than some simple touches like vignetting does this video accurately reflect the graphics of the game or has it been heavily touched up (think operation flashpoint 2 dragon rising: an insult to the name trailer)
The intro alone isn't something Vegas is capable of, so heavy use of After Effects right there. What you see in the video is basically how the sim looks, more or less. Minor touchups only, though I did add the heat-haze effect at 1:43
Amazing... 3:12 is what really caught my eye that looks almost a 100% authentic.. it really blurs the lines between reality and CGI as far as pc games go.
I guess anything you see for in cockpit shots is spot on. The shadow/lighting effects of this sim is amazing. You can also toggle a setting that allows for G/forces/lateral head movement effects vs the direction of the a10. All of the gauges/dials all are animated to actual settings. 99.9% of the cockpit is fully interactive and has actual function as it would in an A10. MFD menus/heck even the TEST menu functions for MFD/HUD are simulated if you want to run a test check. It's impressive!
The foley/post work I noticed: Cam is a little to shaky for external shots vs what the in game mode does. The pilots you hear on the comms chatter are added in, there is voices in sim though (See JTAC examples). The men screaming on the ground strafing run is added in. Other than that it's all quite real what you see. Again these effects you need Track IR5 for that natural head movement effect in sim. Also you can record a 'track' of what you flew so that's how you can do other cam shots.
Well I didn't make this clip obviously, but I play the sim almost daily. Here's how I'd break it down. Will post 2 parts: The 'Real": Most of the time when playing the sim in realism mode, it's going to be 100% in cockpit. The positioning/realistic head movement/zooming on MFD displays, all of that is 100% spot on IF you are using Track IR5. It gives you 'natural' head movement 100% in cockpit. The sounds of the guns, missiles, engines, afterburners on F15's all in game as represented.
@FlightlevelHD No. You fly on the western coastal area of Georgia (the country) (Black Sea map). They are adding a Nevada update as well soon which seems to be part of a engine upgrade from what I understand. You can see more about it on the main web page and see an exact map of the playable sim area.
I'll agree it is missing a dynamic campaign for sure, that would be incredible and I know it's on the wish list. The multiplayer campaigns people have made are pretty decent though, enough to suffice for a night of play. Maybe someday they'll get a true dynamic campaign up on a patch. It's really the only thing it's missing other than maybe more planes. Maybe I'll download BMS this weekend and try it out. Thanks for the heads up TheCabal!
would be nice to see a video about the new Falcon BMS 4.32, not only LockOns, DCS's etc.. It's beeing "active" since 1998 and has a loooong history, especially thanks to the community, which made the actual BMS 4.32 what it is now. I think it would deserve to be put on youtube by you :)
Only thing I'd add is a 'please' to any folk who played Falcon 3 + it's infinite realism mods....This is the 'SIM' Please try it/map you stick to all commands possible......
This is the deal that is harsh and dirty, the real deal, like Falcon was on realism mods.
This sim DEMANDS head tracking and HOTAS...if you can't meet that criteria...so sad. It needs to played this way no dif than those calculating fuel TOT ranges in Falcon 3. This sim is the savior,if you let it be................
Maybe this is THE SIM, but in Falcon (newest mod BMS 4.32 with new physics the first time and directx9 graphics etc.!) you have a dynamic campaign, which after 13 years nobody was able to recreate!
TRACK IR5 + THRUSTMASTER WARTHOG + DCS AC10=that is for sure how you should look at this purchase. In that order. 1. will be needed for the learning curve...the rest is just natural. Whole package is needed in that order, yes I know that's a lot for one sim/game. I'm gonna call it and say sim is almost 'unusable' without the above items. If you want results 'in game' the only way to do it is the 'real way'. (more)
@robijas1mafia you realistically need a HOTAS joystick and head tracking as well. Track IR5 is about $150 and HOTAS joysticks very in price. If you want the real replica bad ass stick, you need the Trustmaster Warthog stick which is the real deal/easiest to learn the A10's systems on. Stick is $420 though, but well worth it if you are into the simulator. But yes, you technically 'could' use just a keyboard, but it would be almost unplayable in my opinion as you'd be fumbling for keys.
Thank you by the way GlowingAmraam. This video sold me on the sim. Ended up getting track ir 5 and the TM Warthog for it....curse you!!! LOL no seriously, thank you...this video does the game great justice.

@TheIzoul a simple example of 'china hat forward or aft SHORT or LONG' or TMS long left, etc, very hard to map into the human brain on most KB/simple joysticks, if not impossible thus limiting you to crucial commands than need to be executed 'real time and fast' to be truly combat effective vs just a free flight hovering the home plate...you want 'instant/natural' human controls...so hard to explain until you experience it I guess....hell even that startup engine sequence 'lifting' left eng 1.

@ZverRUS33 Да ладно тебе - игру наши делали. Предыдущая игра серии про "черную акулу". Lock-on (их же разработка) - поровну самолетов наших и их. Другое дело что у нас команда разработчиков денег на проект не нашла, издатель американский, так это уже не их вина.

Большинство "симов" и "игры" это сделать, и это не должно быть шокер, вы не можете сказать мне, что вы никогда не играли WW2 шутер или сим? Мы были на одной стороне .... Эти симы НЕ прославлять войну. Помню, в Соколе 3 твердом переплете ручной они явно Об этом заявил, и я могу обещать вам любой полет сим enthousiants включая ED / Это клиентская база чувствует себя таким образом.

@CyclonicTuna023 most dedicated 'quality' sims are this way = focus on 1 model. think falcon 3,4/realism mods, tornado, f117, 1990's janes series (new stuff is hoorific arcade non sense, don't even rent it) ms flight sim was 'neat' but doesn't hold a candle of fidelity/realism vs DCS AC10 or the above titles...just saying....

TrackIR really is a must to fully enjoy pretty much any flight sim, but you can do fine in A-10 with just a $25 joystick from Best Buy and most of the commands custom mapped around an FPS-style "W,A,S,D" kind of keyboard layout. That said, I'm still saving up for an X52 with the separate throttle.

i got my WH Hotas almost 1 year ago for this very sim, its still working flawlessly in any and all flight sims. Still pin sharp control on all axis. Its expensive yes but it makes your flying so much more fun.

in the credits it says after effects were used...other than some simple touches like vignetting does this video accurately reflect the graphics of the game or has it been heavily touched up (think operation flashpoint 2 dragon rising: an insult to the name trailer)

The intro alone isn't something Vegas is capable of, so heavy use of After Effects right there. What you see in the video is basically how the sim looks, more or less. Minor touchups only, though I did add the heat-haze effect at 1:43

I guess anything you see for in cockpit shots is spot on. The shadow/lighting effects of this sim is amazing. You can also toggle a setting that allows for G/forces/lateral head movement effects vs the direction of the a10. All of the gauges/dials all are animated to actual settings. 99.9% of the cockpit is fully interactive and has actual function as it would in an A10. MFD menus/heck even the TEST menu functions for MFD/HUD are simulated if you want to run a test check. It's impressive!

The foley/post work I noticed: Cam is a little to shaky for external shots vs what the in game mode does. The pilots you hear on the comms chatter are added in, there is voices in sim though (See JTAC examples). The men screaming on the ground strafing run is added in. Other than that it's all quite real what you see. Again these effects you need Track IR5 for that natural head movement effect in sim. Also you can record a 'track' of what you flew so that's how you can do other cam shots.

Well I didn't make this clip obviously, but I play the sim almost daily. Here's how I'd break it down. Will post 2 parts: The 'Real": Most of the time when playing the sim in realism mode, it's going to be 100% in cockpit. The positioning/realistic head movement/zooming on MFD displays, all of that is 100% spot on IF you are using Track IR5. It gives you 'natural' head movement 100% in cockpit. The sounds of the guns, missiles, engines, afterburners on F15's all in game as represented.

@FlightlevelHD No. You fly on the western coastal area of Georgia (the country) (Black Sea map). They are adding a Nevada update as well soon which seems to be part of a engine upgrade from what I understand. You can see more about it on the main web page and see an exact map of the playable sim area.

I'll agree it is missing a dynamic campaign for sure, that would be incredible and I know it's on the wish list. The multiplayer campaigns people have made are pretty decent though, enough to suffice for a night of play. Maybe someday they'll get a true dynamic campaign up on a patch. It's really the only thing it's missing other than maybe more planes. Maybe I'll download BMS this weekend and try it out. Thanks for the heads up TheCabal!

Only thing I'd add is a 'please' to any folk who played Falcon 3 + it's infinite realism mods....This is the 'SIM' Please try it/map you stick to all commands possible......
This is the deal that is harsh and dirty, the real deal, like Falcon was on realism mods.
This sim DEMANDS head tracking and HOTAS...if you can't meet that criteria...so sad. It needs to played this way no dif than those calculating fuel TOT ranges in Falcon 3. This sim is the savior,if you let it be................

Maybe this is THE SIM, but in Falcon (newest mod BMS 4.32 with new physics the first time and directx9 graphics etc.!) you have a dynamic campaign, which after 13 years nobody was able to recreate!

TRACK IR5 + THRUSTMASTER WARTHOG + DCS AC10=that is for sure how you should look at this purchase. In that order. 1. will be needed for the learning curve...the rest is just natural. Whole package is needed in that order, yes I know that's a lot for one sim/game. I'm gonna call it and say sim is almost 'unusable' without the above items. If you want results 'in game' the only way to do it is the 'real way'. (more)

@robijas1mafia you realistically need a HOTAS joystick and head tracking as well. Track IR5 is about $150 and HOTAS joysticks very in price. If you want the real replica bad ass stick, you need the Trustmaster Warthog stick which is the real deal/easiest to learn the A10's systems on. Stick is $420 though, but well worth it if you are into the simulator. But yes, you technically 'could' use just a keyboard, but it would be almost unplayable in my opinion as you'd be fumbling for keys.
