These aren't traditional civil cases: the participants sign contracts that bind them to accept any decision she delivers (i.e. binding arbitration). I believe there is also an appearance fee for those appearing on the show.
@creejay I understand that this is arbitration but don't they sign the agreement with the knowledge that the judgment will be fair and justifiable? The $500 for the phone is fair, but bumping it up to 5k seems a little excessive for easily undoable slander. Not that condone or pity the ebay scammer at all.

@Sharak19 The Judge Judy show pays for it, interestingly enough. The plaintiff gets their restitution, but the defendant is basically let off the hook, which is incomplete justice. Instead they're humiliated on screen for the public's entertainment.
