Thankyou NSBear...for your little tidbit of info; it was told to me by another Christian years ago, and I tend to believe it, when it comes from a Christian.
I wondered about the age difference, myself, but, thot it was just my mistake.
Regardless, he is one of the top guitar players in the world, ask anyone who can play & they will tell you so. I play; havent for a long time, mind you, but, enough to know good licks when I see them. I'm sure many a secular guitar player thinks that of him.
Who with an ear to hear could not enjoy this? I have been following his music since the Jesus People Movement. Can you imagine how difficult it is to play with 4 fingers instead of the usual five? Even Jimi Hendrix was quoted as saying, when asked who he thot was the best guitarist in the music industry, he proclaimed with no hesitation...Phil Keaggy.
He is an icon; what's more important, an anointed vessel & servant of God.
@Layna8 Sorry that's urban legend. Phil even said: Keaggy has long insisted that such stories are completely unfounded, noting that "it was impossible that Jimi Hendrix could ever have heard me.We recorded our first album at Electric Lady Studios two weeks after his unfortunate death,so I just can’t imagine how he could’ve heard me.I think it’s just a rumor that someone’s kept alive, and it must be titillating enough to keep an interest there. So I don’t think it was said, and that’s it for that!"
This is so much harder than it looks. I have seen him doing this live and it is spot on. One thing that occurs to me is that as a musician, i have to simply forget trying to understand how he is doing what he is doing and just enjoy the fact that he can.
Saw him tonight and he played this song to perfection along with songs by Dylan, The Beatles, and Keith Green. Phil is a very gifted musician and a master of his craft. if you get a chance to see him, do yourself a favor and go - you will both blessed and blown away!!
he uses a loop pedal... it records what he plays from when he taps his foot the first and second time, and then he can play something else while it repeats. I don't hear it in this one though.
Ok...I see what you mean. At 2:19, you can see him step on a pedal...and then he starts his solo, while the background keeps playing. He's pretty awesome, isn't he? Thanks for explaining.
If it's one song that can really hits my heart strings... it's this one. Thank you Phil for Honoring God and Rich with this wonderful rendition/cover song. Please come to Denver.
Yes, definitely open tuning - perhaps E or D but open - he plays a couple of strums in a beautiful chord while no fingers are on the frets. Joni Mitchell uses an open chord D on Cactus Tree. Awesome sound.
Miss Rich Mullins, sometimes I wonder what songs were yet to come from him, such a great writer. And as for Phil, you can always hear the presence of God through him - such a sweet calming presence - love his lead guitar work at the end. Thank you for this.
With Phil, it's hard to pin down "chords". He plays his guitar like a keyboard, with both hands and more. Watch carefully, particularly near the end... he even completely retunes certain strings to a different note (!) while playing.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It warms my heart when I hear it.

He actually uses open G tuning(DGDGBD) tuned half step down. I sat down and figured it out the other day. Took me awhile to get the timing down.

I don't have my guitar with me now - but I can tell you guys for sure that he's using an "open tuning" on this song. Sounds like open E.
