the ball seems to move a lot faster in these older videos than in newer ones. its probably because the ball was 38 mm back then. changing it to 40 mm slowed the game down
they raised the ball siz to stop the china team from dominating as chona team game based on speed, they banned speed glue and now there is a new rule that if you are from the chinese program you can not play for other country team in order to give other country player a chance, even werner schlager said that the rule is stupid as you will not truly play the best players,he said also that other country player need to train harder instead of make new rules for excuses to let them play
Not really, 38mm and 40mm is no difference for viewers. If u can't see 38mm, then 2mm won't help ur eye because human eye won't notice that kind difference from long distance.
The real reason is to make the sport more competitive like mixstylee below said. AN attempt to stop the Chinese domination in the sport, but so far it has backfired because now there are more Chinese talents who are taking advantage of the size increase and moving to other countries in order to compete. Stupid change tbh.
@Tobiasdaneels yeah, but that's comes as a by product, that brings some benefit for the sport. But you don't see hockey or any other small ball sports make the same change for that purpose only.
You can see the ball better because the size slows it down, not because an extra two millimeters makes it more visible by itself. And the whole "so people can compete with the Chinese" conspiracy theory is pure garbage.
@masanf Shortening the points of a game from 21 to 11 points so lower ranked players have greater chance of pulling upset on Chinese players. Not allowing to serve with hands blocking the view. Changing the ball to bigger size. All these were false hopes for the world for leveling off the competition so other countries can compete since they lack the ability to be remotely get near the level with China. Some are healthy changes, but intended to kill Chinese dominance none the less.
Whoever made this video must be a big fan of Jorgen Persson.

Yes. Thats the reason why they raised the balls size. They wanted to make Tabletennis slower to make it more atractive for viewers..

I think the old camera's record with less frames per second, so if you play it as a video made now, it will look faster.
Nice video!
