@monkeeman1966 I would imagine the mono versions quite often were recorded initially for the TV show... and making them for albums, they had to re-record them completely... a perfect example is te popular song Valleri. It was on the first season I believe of the TV show,.. some DJs even recorded it so they could play it. Valleri didn't appear on an LP until their 5th release "The Birds, The Bees, and the Monkees" - a re-recorded version. The original is on CD Missing Links Vol 2
densaner77: actually they started out that way. they were initially told that they were going to play on the records but that idiot kirshner reneged on the deal first 3 albums were vocals only but nesmith exposed the truth to people magazine. Kirshner was fired and the next album (Headquarters) was ALL them . As dolenz put it "every fucking note!" Also, how did they get away with concerts if they couldn't play???
Granted, the Monkees were nothing more than a manufactured pop/rock group like the Archies or the Banana Splits, I agree, but STILL, they provided wonderful catchy songs and memories during 1966-68.
@dawnabrendan I just think they liked playing around with them, since so many are different. Three versions of She Hangs Out, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Look Out (Tomorrow), Valleri, , You Just May Be The One, Mr Webster, Words, I'll Be Back Up On My Feet, Zor And Zam, etc. She and Let's Dance On had reverbed back up vocals. Some had added instrumentals, another version without. I am glad they did do those different things. I prefer the mono versions butI have stereo too. later...
Hey these guys were not too bad..at least they picked Jimi Hendrix as their opening act...FYI Boyce and Hart first gave this tune to an English group the Liverpool Five who in early 1966 were recording their first album for RCA in LA. The Monkees later used the same studio and engineers as the LP5 and heard that version and decided to put it on their own initial Colgems album. Have a treat and go check that LP5 version recently posted on You Tube.
I remember getting this on the back of a cereal box, seriously. I think it was honeycombs I had to be about ,IDK But I swear you had to cut it off the box and it played as a 45
you know i'm not much for "made for t.v. bands", but i would like to give credit where credit is due..........Mickey Dolenz really gets down with this vocal. i could see him fronting a legitimate r&b band...........
@johnnyrockintalkin - listening to them now ... Mickey was the best vocalist in the band ... but he missed the boat to get in a real band and this one I believe tarnished them. Mike Nesmith went through hell to prove himself as a real artist separate from The Monkees.
I gave a thumbs up because this is such a great Monkees tune, thanks for posting it, and also because I was put in a mild state of hypnosis by the spinning picture which suggested to me that I should vote a thumbs up.
The Monkeeys were great, and each was a great song artist. Just becuase Mickey or Mike sounded better singing a song written by someone else like Niel Diamond or Carol King and that doesnt make them like the Fake Archies or Banana Splits. These guyz were for real. Nobody could ever sing those songs better. the songwriters couldnt have sung the songs better. All 4 had a great voice that cannot be copied. Today they all sound the same. Boy bands suck. Same old bs. These guyz were great.
the monkees actually started out as a tv show but grew into an actual band including writing and performing on their own albums,so you're right and wrong
This is one the greatest little pop songs of all time. It was written by Neil Diamond but the Monkees brought it to life. Have you ever heard Neil Diamond's version. Let's just say it sucks. Peace.
The Monkees were no more a band than The Archies or The Banana Splits. What they did have was international TV exposure and excellent songwriters such as Neil Diamond and Carole King. They did put out some good tracks such as this and Last Train. However to view The Monkees as a band is missing the point as they were wholly manufactured for a TV show.
@densaner77 After the first two albums, they heard these same words... and music after that was done largely with them doing all the instruments... They also wrote many songs. Yes, they were initially actors thrown together for the show, but there is some music ability there, they chose these guys from hundreds of others. Do some research/// I did.
@dawnabrendan. The Monkees could play musical instruments but the only member who had any real musical talent was Nesmith. Almost all of The Monkees big hits were written for them by the professional songwriters I mentioned. Without the TV show and the songwriters The Monkees were nothing. Do some research! I did.
Their innocent t.v. show, along with the great song writing , helped me better understand and appreciate the already fabulous "Beatles". When I became the older and wiser age of 8...I will never forget "The Monkees" for that
@densaner77 The greatest amazement out of it all though, is the fact that the boys, actually sang the songs written. Futhermore, they actually played the instruments.
Yes! You are right with the fact, that it was a manufactured TV Show. However, the boys themselves, proved to audiences that they themselves weren't manufactured.
@densaner77 They started like that but as mentioned, they were a band after a year or so, nowadays a band gets contract and the finished song sounds nothing like the demo or live version as it was molested in a studio and over-produced to the point where the instruments are indistinguishable. Mike was always a musician and a great one song writer surprise surprise he isn't doing the reunion, except one show...almost all popstars today write none of their music, just lyrics
@densaner77 Anyone can be made into a star! I like the Eric Burden influence here though.......very good tune! Allot of people went ahead and copied it and made ton's of money!
@densaner77 it's worth pointing out that "serious" groups like the Byrds hardly played their own instruments on their first two LP's, either. Jim (Roger) McGuinn's Rickenbacker was about it...but still great records anyway.
@densaner77 And what year is it now?.....anyone who can hold strong through years of changing music is worth raving about...Those lost in the past didn't hold enough interest to keep there songs listened to for the generations to come.....You have to give credit where credit is due...no matter the opinion of craftsmanship.
Maybe they weren't a real band in the traditional sense (though at one point they did play their own instruments), but those are their voices on those tracks- the voices that made those songs so great. Micky had fantastic pipes, Davy was also wonderful, and Mike had some good songs too. Point is, even if they'd NEVER played an instrument, it was their voices that made those songs so wonderful, and that's good enough for me and millions of other fans.
I'm so glad someone finally posted this! i love the monkees and I looked all over for this and could only find those crappy covers so thank you sooooo much!!!

You cut the record out from the box, poke the spindle hole and put the record on your old fashioned Close and Play record player (red tyvm).

@doodl3bugg13 the original was actually done by Paul Revere and the Raiders. Not to hate on this version, because I think the Monkees do it better :-)
