Legendary tune, in the sense that before this came out no one had ever heard scratching like it, i certainly never had. Jazzy jeff raised the bar with what could be done with two turntables and a mixer
jazzy jeff iz maddd nice on the wheelz, i remember rockin this back in da day, but then came along dj scratch in the 90s with epmd, and i thought, he was the only dj on jeffs level imo.
@DreMurf313 none of them are seein Jeff..... you would have to look towards people like qbert or straight turntablists to find someone who has any kind of comp for him. but most of them dudes cant rock parties so when u talkin bout best DJ, its gotta be Jeff. hes incredible
@ratedMVPtv you got it right homey... so many people focus on how fast the fader moves, how much they can crab scratch... or use sound effects on the mixer... that's skill sure, but real DJ skill comes from the ability to put the sounds together in a smooth, flowing, and FUNKY manner. it's about balancing the technique with singular purpose. weaving a tapestry of sound!!!
@DreMurf313 Just watch this: /watch?v=9hd4AfgGgHo. Premier, Kid Capri, GM Flash, and Jazzy Jeff doing a tribute to JMJ. Jazzy Jeff outshines them all, IMO - and that's saying something because I love ALL those DJs and they're all legends in one way or another. But if you ask me Jazzy Jeff is clearly the standout of the DJs from previous generations. BUT, I think the best battle of old school DJs might be Jazzy Jeff vs. DJ Aladdin. Man, that'd be a tough one to call.
Thateknek was there. Nobody knows those facts except witnesses. When this cut dropped deejays were serious about the skills and the creativity. Jeff took it to another level. Then all the training wheels came out now everybody thinks they can dj. The era of the turntable was the true Golden Era of Hip Hop. Remember King Kut! Play That Beat! GM Flash on The WOS! The KISS 96 MasterMix!!
Classic song, I still remember trying to search for this on the cassette tape, because it was one of my favorites from the album, using that next song scan feature. It never worked because the space in between the end of the previous song and this song was extremely short. One ended and this one started right up, so had to fast forward and stop and play each time to see where I was at. Any of you old timers know exactly what I am talking about too. The good ole days of old school, i miss em.
Now for some real Hip History kiddies. Back in 1986 Jeff and Prince were the New School cats coming up under the likes of DJ Cash Money and Tat Money who actually taught Jeff the transform. Jeff and Prince were Philly hip hop cats who had the nerve to come to NYC and represent. They took the World Supremacy trophy and from there they went hard. Back then we wanted Jeff to DJ For Rakim. OMG. And who am I? The Legendary Grandmaster Jay. Love you Jeff.
@JayBlaze88 now what would have happened if jazzy jeff did end up djing for rakim...it would have been the tragic for emcees and dj's ... unlike fresho and miz..... cash money was a hard dude to beat...his only real competition one year at the dmc i think was jazzy joyce...and what ever happened to marvelous? i miss those days
@JayBlaze88 i was at the philly VS NY battle (like 88 or 89?) and i can attest TAT MONEY was a beast that night. i was like OMG, this dude rivals jeff and cash...? the fact that i stll remember it here over 20+ years later should tell you something. i think he went against Cut Master DC...?
I ain't gonna lie....when I heard this,I fell in love with it.This cut turned the corner for hip-hop to come. What Jeff did on this single is unprecedented. He had me scratching my parents old records. They still don't know those records are fucked up.Trend setting cut baby!
DJ Jazzy Jeff - my all time flav frm my C-60 cassettes haha ..now make that record burp ... now make it sound like a bird!! yeah boiiii!! luv'n it then ... luv'n now!! .. i'm talkn 2u....SHOUTtt :- ) THANKS!!
Guys would sing this song line for line back when I was in middle school in South Carolina. I played this "tape" (album) so many times. This particular song was ground breaking
I used to hate this back in the day because I've always been a metal head, but you can't deny talent no matter the genre! DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince were the best!
i remember hearing this on the radio back like 87 or somthing back in the day when jazzy jeff busted the transformer scratch! i think this was on the "rock the house" album their first if i remember
Yeah, It also had an impact on me when I first heard the song in the late 80's. It made me think about Jeff as a producer who listened to all genres of music (and of course, every gifted musician do) and didn't want to put hip hop in side the "all black n' James Brown" box.
Also, if you listen to the drum beat in "Shout" there's no doubt that hip hoppers digged it do to the "hip hop style" of it.
It's kind of strange because we forget that Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince were great even before all the fame and TV shows. They really did contribute to Hip Hop and also in a positive way. real party Hip Hop, but still raw. They paid their dues.... Thanks guys :)
I didn't realise how smooth Will Smith was until years after I'd heard of him. I like some of his tunes that are not really conventional rap. I think I have Red alert kicking about somehwere on audio cassette. Youger youtube viewers may have to google that term. :)
This is the first DJ I ever heard do the "transformer" scratch. DJ Jazzy Jeff was a BEAST!! This was my favorite song from their "Rock The House" albu.
DJ Jazzy Jeff is highly regarded as THE world supreme DJ...(?)....he is the greatest of all times. I speak from the perspective of a fellow DJ. With similar skills...but less ability!!!
nice sample spotting! dance to the drummer's beat is herman kelly. 'none of them' cut is paul hardcastle '19'. chic 'good times' cuts in there too. hmmm some bits remain frustratingly unidentifiable, like the 'he's jazzy jazzy' bit etc lol how sad is this. nah...fk it it;s dope
The "oh my god" sample is taken from The Cold Crush Brothers "Punk Rock Rap" which was first used on "The Show" by Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew.
This was one of my favorite cuts back in the day, the transformer scratch blew my mind...I was 8 when I bought this album and I had no idea at the time that I was listening to a legend in the making, but I knew it was something special...I liked Prince a lot as an MC and still do, but I bought these albums to listen to how Jeff was going to murder the next piece of vinyl he slapped on the turntables...Thanks for puttin it up, lot of memories here ^_^
You missed Whistle 'Only Buggin', Chics 'Good Times' Run DMC 'Here We Go At The Funhouse & (as always)'James Browns 'Funky Drummer' to name a few, That 'His name is Jeff' bit sounds like the Fat Boys, but I'm sure someone even more sad than me will tell you exactly what it is and more
this is what ill say about the man. not to disrespect anybody, but hes the only pioneer(pre-90's dj) thats still truly relevant today. jeff is timeless, hes the perfect balance of skills and musicality.

You are listening to the number two DJ in hip-hop especially back then of course Flash is first. Yo dis dude was meant for this I thought he invented transforming or GrandDragon KD they was the first I ever heard do it. Cash and all those other Philly Djs was nice but yo jeff was something special! listen to a touch of jazz 12 inch version (its on the tube now) he murdered that joint matter fact Jeff murdered everything. I never listened to hear Prince I always listened to Jeff son, word!
I totally agree ,so you can imagine how I felt when Jeff told MTV News that I was 30-40 years ahead of all the current crop of battle dj's ! I was sitting right next to him after he judged one of the DMC'S when He said that -I almost couldn't speak LOL ! -dj Mysterio....all hail The Magnificent !!!!
