  • wow....3 Extremely talented people.. . the memories.. the MUSIC... Absolutely fantastic :)

  • Love these guys, as a drummer carl's solo is absolutley amazing! Rock On ELP!!

  • why dont bands have drum kits like that anymore?

  • Wtf??!!? That was flippin awesome!!!!!!

  • @mvideokid too bad you didn't see em in the 70's, it blew me away when i did... philly, the spectrum '77!

  • i love elp

  • Fabulous

  • Check out Greg's guitar solo; makes that instrument sing!

  • Well said, bravo!

This is a great, wall of sound, true. Genius is genius.

  • No matter what you think of the genre, the musical era, the looks, politics, hair, etc. There's something you can't deny. Talent and showmanship! It's always amazed me too, how 3 guys can create so much of a complete sound! Even bands like the Who only had 3 instruments with a vocalist. There was certainly nothing missing from their sound!

Gotta love Youtube for allowing us the ability to watch these old films. It probably sells a lot of "records" for these "forgotton" bands.

    Long Live Rock!

  • Aerosmith sucks.

  • And to think this band almost had Jimi hendrix in it to make a progressive quartet. I guess the band would have been abbreviated to "HELP!"

  • 3 guys really!?!?

  • Do they all chew gum?

  • @planetjanet2 Actually, yeah. Keith Emerson said he started it as a way to calm his nerves because early in his career he was always nervous about going on stage. Apparently they all followed suit.

  • Three guys !!Really!!!!

  • Carl Palmer is fantastic.

  • Ahhh... masters of the Moog synthesizer

  • I wonder if Emerson had few more hands...Like those Indian Goddesses... lmao

  • I've known that since Brain Salad fresh off the shelf !

  • Seen this great band back in "74" at Charlotte Speedway North Carolina. Hitched hiked from Chi-town. Was not disappointed. Those where the days.

  • Omg. Love him!

  • So glad I got to see them live!

  • xD

  • come and see the showが完全に「我慢しましょう」に聞こえる。

    もう少し頑張ればもっと空耳見つけられるかもwww

  • im graduated now, bak my freshman year in high school, when i was on color guard, we did this for the music that year an that was back in 06'-07' :) i miss it so much :(

  • site:youtube.com COMING SOON GOOGLE> UNCLE JOHN and THE SCOLE GHOST ANGEL BAND :-)

  • Brilliant!!! :)

  • the funny part is that he's problably thinking it is easy.

  • It's amazing how 3 guys can produce such a wall of sound!

  • @Tony07UK I've always had a huge problem with Simon Cowell. How can someone from England be the judge of what an American Idol should be?

  • Okay is it just me or does Emerson have a woodie??????

  • Love that Hammond organ :) Great song I heard this on Pistol Petes dvd Basketball player. 22 people will never see the show

  • Love that Hammond organ :) Great song I heard this on Pistol Petes dvd Basketball player

  • They cut the drum solo =[[

  • I seen these guys in Cincinnati, OH. My first indoor conert in the mid 70"s..... Great Show!!

  • Keith Emerson is the best rock musician I've actually seen with my own eyes. He is better at keyboards than anyone else is at his/her respective instrument IMO.

  • @seismiccowboy Keith Emerson and Rick Wakefie;d would be an awesome duel. Ther's the two of them and then everyone else. Kind of like Clapton and Page are with guitar.

  • ugly music for psycho!!!

  • Yes WHO can do it better, ELP is the best band ever!!! SUPER BAND

  • Legends & real musicians and that's that. So the fuck with Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus and every other faggot that makes an appearance in some shopping mall waring the latest fashion.

  • Awesome drumming by Carl Palmer

  • What a band, what a band!

  • GWAR started off the Zombies March! like that lol

  • Carl Palmer was an INCREDIBLE drummer.

  • @MrJrinct carl is STILL!!! incredable. check out c.p. snare demo on youtube. ole boy is still killing em at 60+ yrs. young.

  • What can one say, ELP ROCKS!!! All these other bands today are not even worthy to be in the same room as these guys. I hate American Idol and all these water down bands of today, Take note young musicians of today, watch and learn from the rock bands in the past (mainly before the MTV era) and if you work hard enough and have the talent enough to do what these guys did, maybe (and that's a big MAYBE), you might be mentioned along side of the greatest rock bands of the past.

  • Doesn't get much better than this!!! :)

  • paul gilbert rules!

  • It's amazing that this much music can come out of only three guys.

  • The keyboard parts of this song always reminds me of some SNES RPG battle theme. I wonder if this song inspired some.

  • and some how rap is considered a musical genre....how is that possible after listening to ELP and other groups of the 70's...including Motown!

  • @burkardhanis Isn't that the truth... It is disgusting how the ability to rhyme a couple of words now gains "performers" a grammy. Please look at the ability of bands to actually perform music. These three musicians were able to create a sound that previously had never been heard before. This is creativity at it's finest....

  • 1:53, best part of the song

  • still today, they make other rock hero's., look like beginners.....there are no better muscians.......

  • Real musicians with obvious classical training playing real rock.

  • This is true art. They paved the way for all of these American Idol idiots that think that all fame is commercialized and more or less handed out without hard work. You will not see most of these bands from today last more than 10 years in my book. Bands like KISS, Aerosmith, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin...they last a life time. Most of those are 30 years and counting. I am happy that music like this was created and will live forever. Rock on! Simon Cowell? Eat your heart out.

  • @hollywoodjay09 GOOD ONE! I don't really think simon knows how to rock n roll whatsoever. it is true a good laugh is tv just watch faux news or jane fonda's husband network . he should have her do nude aerobics SERIOUSLY the news has got that stale

  • amazing drum solo much...

  • far, far before their time. The problem with "classic rock" radio these days is they overlook magnificent talents such as ELP. Thanks for posting!

  • how pompous ...

  • Saw them do this at the Cal Jam. They brought the house down......

  • @wldlndfyrfytr This is the same version

  • carl is on drugs haha ! Can someone get his kit off Ringo and get it grooving again !

  • eh that was excellent

  • ELP along with Rush have some of the finest rock musicians. God bless both of them.

  • This is the most complex rock music I´d ever heard. A melange of rock, classic and jazz. Awesome. Unfortunately the great music is dead for a to long time.

  • This has got to be the opening number when they reunite TODAY to headline that big concert in London !! Really hope it leads them to get back together. IMHO, they are three of the best rock musicians ever !! ELP forever !!!!!!

  • rush, and elp are both awesome bands

  • The out of sync occurs when the bit rate sample on the video encoder is not set up right. My guess is that it was recorded 8 bit or 16 and encoded 24 bit.

  • The keyboard parts remind me a lot of SNES RPGs. I wonder if Japanese composers for those games where inspired by this, or other songs like this.

  • I'm so glad I grew up when I did. Rock music has sucked since the 80'S

  • @whymelord21222 But the mid 80's to 1990 sucked too!

  • @scoobes11 Actually with the possible exception of Def Leppard and The Scorpians the 80's, 90's and damn near everything in this century has sucked.

  • we did this for marching band

  • @Drummergirl4eva1 you have an awesome band instructor...

  • progressive rock at it's finest !

  • if you notice, at the point where his vox are off, the drums are too. bad editing i presume, not lip syncing.

  • the singing here overdubbed onto the video. you'll notice his lips don't move exactly in sync with the singing. a great group, but this one's a little bogus.

  • Aww Dude! This is the song my dad was telling me about a long time ago, then shortly after I heard this on the radio but couldn't remember the name! ^^ Thx for posting!

  • glaze of vasoline = funny line in the song

  • i wish i was there to see that festival..so many great bands played there..it's the california jam festival from '73..unfortunately i was only 2 yrs old !

  • @blica1 I was there and it was in 1974...

  • @vintagerockdotcom Great !..thanks , i stand corrected , but still awesome !

  • Magic!

  • Can't wait till April 25th. I'm seeing Emerson and Lake at the Orpheum Theatre in LA. That will be my second concert. :D

  • Elp and The moody blues are progressive rock

  • I'm not seeing how one could call The Moody Blues prog. They're .. art rock.

  • Yup, yet the Moody Blues have some infliences from prog rock...

  • Even though he missed a verse in this show/video clip, I have seen these guys and they are TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

  • lester bangs said that.....

and he's dead and buried. ELP 's music is still kicking!! keith and greg are on tour~

  • does anyone see a connection between the Moody Blues and ELP? "cause I don't mean musically as much as the "genre" of rock.

  • i would say that anyone who makes fun of ELP just runs his stubborn head against the wall of thruth!

they were extremely gifted musicians and writers, and their overblown attitude was just thier version of ziggy stardust or "jimi burning stratocasters".

well at least they survived the game so far!

say noone anything against ELP, they know a thing or two about a life within music!!!!!!

  • Speechles!!!!!!! WOW!

  • emerson, man.. that ending is so hard, any piano player would know. sweet jesus..

  • I once saw this site that listed the worst bands in history, and it had ELP at 2. LMAO. I guess some people have surpassed the relm of stupidity to another dimension of total, utter ignorance.

No musician has ever amazed me to the point that Emerson just did.

  • well if critics liked prog the world would be a much more boring place, john peel once called elp "a waste of talent and electricity" thats not insulting thats just hilarious!!!

  • Yeah I heard that, but at least that was early in their carreer, but still! Good point though--it's too fun to hate critics, pop, and the radio.

  • that is ridiculous. They are #2 in my FAVORITE bands. They deserve better than that.

  • @potatopizza93 It was probably some irrelavent Miley Cyrus, Justin Beiber loving site that listed them as the 2nd worst band ever. Someone with absolutely no taste in music and obviously tone deaf!

  • @TheBellaemmamom No, it was probably Robert Christgau of Rolling Stone. He hates ELP more than anybody. Here's a Christgau quote about ELP: "They are almost as pretensious as there stupid fans!" Don't bother to look for any Christgau quotes about ELP. He took them all of the internet...

  • @potatopizza93 If I may ask, who was number one on that list? I just typed in "Worst Bands in history" on Google, and the guy listed Pink Floyd, Beatles, and Hendrix on that list! And the Doors were listed as the worst! What an idiot! But yeah, if somebody's rating ELP as one of the worst, someone has to have sense punched into 'em!

  • @potatopizza93 Must have been Kanye West's top ten list

  • @potatopizza93 most rock critics are lemmings and will only praise an act if ALL THE OTHER CRITICS praise them. ELP and YES get slagged, even though most of the critics (in private) will tell you the LOVE both bands. ELP is one of the most important bands is ALL music history. And one of the most influential.

  • I made my own video to this awesome song. Currently available on YouTube. (But you never know about WMG). watch?v=C_zo0FiNheI. I record the audio from a vinyl record then film my turntable in random places. I did this one on a really cool LED board (previously used by The Who). I think it's pretty cool and of course, ELP rules! Check it out.

  • Awesome keyboard solo at the end. The left hand part is difficult on its own without throwing in the rapidly moving line in the right hand before leaping down to the middle board on the tension chords.

  • Carl palmer=AMAZING DRUM SOLO

  • I did the broadcast sound at California Jam. Still have it. It's bigger than classic rock when it's "done right" lol.

  • having seen these guys in 76 wow what underated musicians they are .especialy carl parmers drums

  • Love ELP, seen this in concert, played the record and CD to death, but this sounds like an off night.

  • would kill to see these guys live and heres why: keith emerson-greatest keyboardist ever, greg lake-awesome songwriter and singer, carl palmer-one of the greatest drummers of his era

  • should have left the entire drum solo in

  • Anyone know what year this was? Thanks.

  • @iTitus reply to myself: 1974

  • They peaked during this tour. They never sounded the same or played as well again.

  • Is Emerson doing the bass lines on his keyboard or is it prerecorded?

  • incredibly, he does everything, only non keyboard sounds were prerecorded. Thats why i consider him the greatest keyboardist of all time, he was playing different things in his right and left hands.

  • Keith is without a doubt the greatest keyboardist ever,he's miles ahead of anyone else.Keith is like an octopus,he is total perfection, nobody can or will ever come close.

  • Here everything is live and for sure emerson is playing the bass line on the minimoog with left hand........ incredible.

  • Probably very much like Ray Manzarek was doing the bass for The Doors..

  • Absolutely incredible. Here it is over thirty years later, and this stuff still blows me away. The synth line that Emerson does at 4:15 is great - glad they showed his hands during that part!

  • yeah, the "not content with that; we pull Jesus from a hat" line is from the 1st impression part 1, this is 1st impression part 2

  • What happened to the "Not content with that; we pull Jesus from a hat" line? Or was that KE9Pt1?

I was at the California Jam for this show. Blue microdot in quad (!!). I was in 9th grade. I had seen them 3 other times that year, at The Forum, the Long Beach Arena, and the San Bernardino Swing Auditorium.

  • First heard this song watching Aloha Bobby and Rose in the late 70's. Ultimate driving song makes you want to drive 100. Excellent song..

  • I've heard that ELP will be fronting the High Voltage tour next year in London - If so i'll be there, i'll be there, i will be there.

  • way,way ahead of there time.these r true musicians, carl palmer is still the greatest drummer of all-time,and emerson is the greatest of all-time,and greag lake is great as well.love these guys to death.

  • @cfv22 Ever compare Keith Emerson to Rick Wakeman? I love them both and honestly can't say who's better.

  • KEITH EMERSON!!!

  • @cfv22 I don't think they were ahead of their time, cause then they would sound like some shit like Justin Bieber...

  • @cfv22 Fucking cant touch Rush, lol, Neil Peart blows Carl Palmer.... Danny Carey is a lot better to..... They shouldnt have played after Deep Purple at the California Jam.... Deep Purple is way way way Better!

  • @strangegroove1985 I completely disagree. You obviously favor more straight type of rock bands. ELP ventured where rush or deep purple have never gone or ever will go. And Niel blows away Carl? ha ha! Just goes to show how much you know about tech ability. Neil is one of my fav drummers but he still cant touch what Carl did in the70s. Buddy Rich was clever enough to see this most obvious truth!

  • it was the openinng song every night at the strip club i used to DJ at

  • Wow.. that is a GREAT song to open a strip show....

as long as there really weren't 'seven virgins and a mule' on the playbill?

  • first time i heard this it was in aloha bobby and rose when i was 5. loved it ever since. glad i could finally find this song

  • That guy HAS to be the best Keyboard player ever, they influenced Floyd so much. And in turn, Floyd influenced them

  • This looks like VHS-Wish I had a DVD of this show-best live performance of this tune I have heard so far-heard just about all of em.Beats the hell outta the dismal sounding and looking DVD's of this band released years later.Awesome post!

  • I believe this was from the California Jam in 73 and was broadcasted on ABC TV on their In Concert series. It is on low resolution video originally beta or VHS and has been put on DVD which I have but not much better quality than what you see here unfortunately. The video does, however, include the flying piano, which if you haven`t seen you need to search for and watch....

  • I saw it live it 77.. Thought it was the funniest thing I had ever seen-he looked like he was holding on for dear life, playing as fast as he could, while this thing was spinning in the air lol

  • I`m jealous. I saw them three times in the 70s, the last time at Soldier Field in Chicago with the 63 piece orchestra. I never got to see the flying piano in person. I was and am a huge fan, have heard that Emerson is having trouble with his hand and had to cancel some upcoming shows...

  • It is I who is jealous- I would have MUCH rather have seen the ELP with orchestra gig-you are a very lucky man indeed my friend (pun intended)

  • I met Keith Emerson in a club in Los Angeles in 1986 or 1987...he was totally totally fucked up and tried to pickup my wife as well

  • YIKES LOL

  • Well, rock star, what do you expect.

    Did she go?

  • that ending was sick

  • Let's all build a time machine, and go back to the 70's- yipeeeee

  • @seka69seka In a hearttbeat!!!

  • @seka69seka

    let's do it!!!

    <3

back to the days of <3

  • @seka69seka

    let's do it!!!

    <3

back to the days of <3

  • @seka69seka I'll bring some sandalwood incense and Indian tapestries for the ceiling!

  • ELP stand along-side bands such as Pink floyd, Genesis, Deep purple etc.....BRILLIANT.

  • hey can someone please post the endless enigma both parts

  • I only 19 but I love ELP's music. They're amazing! Carl Palmer is one of the greatest drummers I've heard. There is a lot of drum solos by him on YouTube.

  • Thanks for posting the vid. Brings back wonderful memories of my teen years. Do you know what concert and year this was from?

  • Eta progressivo da porr4.

  • The best group of ever..

  • Yeah, they waste part of his (Palmer's)best riff foccusing instead on Emerson doing the bird wing.

  • where is part one?

  • where did they come up with the name for this song

  • "Karn Evil" is an alteration of the word "carnival" which is essentially what the piece is about. The "9" was simply added onto the end to make it sound more scifi.

  • thanks!

  • I don't know about the "9". I think it's an alteration of "night". That would be consistent.

"Karn Evil 9" = "Carnival Night"

  • This whole section of the song was a comment on the way the media plays upon people's suffering to make the news. It's the media circus/carnival. The last section is about computers basically ruling our lives, written before PCs were the norm. Pretty prophetic I'd say! ;-)

  • GeeZZZZZ . . . Carl is rather FAST isn't he? Peace to all Gringo Jet

  • what was the date of this show and where?

  • california jam, 1974 O_O"

  • A good contest indeed betwwen Neil Peart and Carl Palmer.I respect and admire both!

  • @cfl215603 yes i admire both, but you got to hand it to palmer for shear speed!

  • Damn, I'm suppose to watch this for band,But I'm getting carried away cause the pianoist and dummer is killing it

    Nice

    XD

  • How in the world can someone play two instruments at the same time?

Oh, but now we have Brittany and Justin and the Jonas Brothers.
