Suppose someone was on their own, had a student loan, w/o a spouse or parents to provide for them - how would they get by?

I saw photos of a big rally that took place in the 1980s, with people waving lots of American flags and banners about religious freedom and stuff. Were you involved in organizing those rallies? Was that rally also part of the "thin dimes" protest?
I'm been using this free time to research the history of Scientology and its opponents in the DM era, that's why I'm asking.
