@huskyjerk, the U.S.Army MREs contain a plastic package intended to heat the entree. Inside the heat-resistant package is a small quantity of iron filings. The operator removes the entree thermopackage from the cardboard box and slips it into the heating plastic package. He adds a tiny quantity of water which initiates a exothermic reaction with the iron filings. The plastic package quickly becomes too hot to handle and must be laid aside, propped up for 10 minutes to warm up the entree.
