McCartney wanted to lead the band and Lennon was hooked on Heroin or about to be. He and Harrison were going into Lazy hippy mode and McCartney was still a work horse, extremely disciplined and saddled with lazy famous hippies.

it's probably a good thing the beatles broke up when they did. They achieved way more than anyone ever could in the space of eight years and the legacy remains so strong because they didn't fade away like some groups who continued on. Also, screaming girls sending them from the stage to the studio was probably the best thing that ever happened to them.

the bloke playing keys is called billy preston, a famous american keys player who was i believe briefly signed to apple records. according to a book on these sessions, he brought a fresh lease of life to the 'let it be' recordings, and they were on the brink of asking him to be a full time member of the band. obviously the rest is history... sorry to be dull, but i'm a beatles anorak and you did ask!
